I won another FirstReads giveaway. I'm flabbergasted. This one's The Mist in the Mirror by Susan Hill, author of The Woman in Black, which I havne't read but I liked the movie...
See, once you win one, you will win another. Snowball effect. I've won a ton in the last year after nothing for four years.
I'm still winning. I won another last Friday. It seems that as long as you review them in a timely manner, you're not blacklisted. I think a lot of it depends on the publisher. It seemed like once I won an L Ron Hubbard from Galaxy Press, I've been winning half of the Galaxy giveaways I've entered. I've won a couple from Hard Case Crime too.
But it's all random, yanno.

Ooops. I think I've been blacklisted.
I think I was, back in 2009. I won three that year, I think. But I won the last one a few months before the book was released. Didn't get an early copy. So even though I read it immediately upon receipt, it was a few months after I'd been given the "win". Then I had that 4 year dry spell. But it's all random, yanno.

This may be a stupid question, but: Is there a term or sub genre for "Dark Scifi" or does it fall under "Dark Fantasy"? I'm currently reading Polaris 10 Short Stories, and while I wouldn't categorize it specifically as "Horror", it does have elements that lean in that direction.

Glad I could help.
I really want to know what others think, too.
Never heard of any difference made in it. Then again by the nature of science fiction if it gets too dark it probably ends up under horror, like Alien or something. I don't know either.

And if you're in the Science Fiction/Fantasy Group, horror elements in a SF story will often result in it being called "fantasy". Unless it's a substandard copy, and then it will be called SF/Horror.

No one calls John W. Campbell Jr.'s Who Goes There? fantasy. And it's the prime example of SF horror.

I've just sent a message to the author asking for his thoughts. He actually started a Self-Promo thread here, which is how I found the book in the first place.

Yeah, it's sci/fi. On the Beach is dark science fiction but as often happens when a book gets "discovered" and is accepted as "literary" it can't be called sci/fi any more. But it is.

rotf!
Whenever I get too balled up in categorizing things, I remember Monty Python.Brian: Excuse me. Are you the Judean People's Front?
Reg: F___ off! 'Judean People's Front'. We're the People's Front of Judea! 'Judean People's Front'.
Francis: Wankers.

All: Splitters!
Game of Thrones news: http://tv.msn.com/tv/article.aspx?new...I wish I was a fly on the wall for that meeting with Martin.
I got a new Nook HD yesterday. Been playing with it and setting up and copying books to it. So I get a new ereader and so far it reduced my reading. Hmm.
It's way different from my first generation Nook too.

I want a new ereader but I can't justify the cost right now.
Especially since I've been reading mostly hardcopies.

Good luck with that. I spend the majority of my time with my Nook HD playing Candy Crush or Farm Friends Saga or checking GR.
Reading? What?
Chris wrote: "*Immediately reduces 2014 Challenge from 100 books to 30.*"Sounds about right. LOL
Actually, I do do SOME reading on my NookHD - on the kindle app. LOL
And I've already got 26 read...I need to load that Kindle app, so I can check out some of those freebies I've gotten.
I get ADHD on my HD nook too. For me it's hopping online to look something up. Or checking up on goodreads. Or browsing the nook shop for books I don't need - but the shop is so pretty! Thankfully I don't play games anymore - that's a total time killer - but I used to be addicted. I get more reading done on my simple touch nook. Less distractions that way.

Oooo yay! Welcome to Nook HD ownership. The shine does wear off after a few weeks or so. ;)
I was like Becky constantly playing Candy Crush or playing around with apps. Google Play and Kindle are pretty awesome. I have yet to read on either one, but I have plenty of freebies from both. :P
