Sorry it took us so long to answer. I got no new notifications for this thread.
First, are you talking about option 1 or 2. They are little different.
Basically, you roll 5 dice and check what numbers you got. By your example, after that first roll you could read:
Ones - 2 books
Twos - 1 book
Threes - 1 book
or Fives - 1 book
It's up to you what option you'll choose. Since you are rolling 5 dice, maximum number of books you can read for each category can be 5.
For example you have only Ones left to read, and after rolling you have 1-1-1-1-1. That means you're reading 5 first books in series. Again if you roll 1-1-2-3-1 you can read 3 firsts.
Now after your second roll, it's up to you how you'll handle things.
You have 3-1-1-5-2 & 3-1-6-4-1
I played that I 'froze' wanted numbers after first roll so took only 'free' from second and I'd end up with 3-1-1-4-1 which would give me 3 ones to read or three of kind.
You could also choose to roll less dice in second or third roll (like in RL Yahtzee). If you decide you want to keep 1-1 from your first, just roll 3 dice second time. That way you don't have to think what you have left and how to combine them.

You can roll real dice if you have them. Or you can use virtual ones here. You even have instructions (image under spoiler) in rule-post on how to set up virtual ones :)

If you want to make it more challenging than yes, try to get highest score.
Or you could just read what you've rolled.
