USA Today bestselling author Samantha Ann King was born and raised in Houston, Texas. After receiving her BBA in Finance from Texas A&M University and marrying her high school crush (notice she didn't say sweetheart), Samantha relinquished her "native Texan" status and moved to Baton Rouge. She has called Albuquerque, New Mexico home since 1985. The mother of three has volunteered in the community as an advocate for children's issues ranging from education to healthcare. In 2010, as her nest started to empty, she began writing erotic romance. Thanks to her win in Passionate Ink's Stroke of Midnight Contest, Samantha signed her first publishing contract in 2011. Her first book was nominated for RT’s 2012 Reviewers’ Choice Award.

Writing description is my least favorite part of the process! I'm not a big fan of reading description either (and often skim it). For main characters, I typically have an idea of what they look like before I begin a book. Then I search on the internet for photos (usually of celebrities since they're easy to find) of people who I think resemble my characters. Lots of times, the physical characteristics characters are a mesh of celebrities and people I know. I put these photos in files (and on my Pinterest boards, https://www.pinterest.com/sakingauthor/) and will print out one of two for each character. If I'm having trouble with a description, I'll refer to the photos.
Places are a little different. I actually enjoy learning about different locations: visiting and researching. Last year, I traveled to Red River, New Mexico during the off-season to get a feel for the town when it wasn't packed with tourists. I research weather, flora and fauna, pull photos from the internet, and even check out youtube videos. I've also been know to solicit input on my Facebook page. In the book I'm working on now, I have a very brief scene at the Austin Executive Airport. I've never been there, and the scene was too short to warrant a visit, so I found photos and videos online. For businesses and homes, I'll search online for photos, and again, file them away. For Sharing Hailey, I found the Hawaiian vacation home that her brother rents on VRBO (great resource!). I expanded on that--added a second floor and a pool, and moved the ohana from above the garage to a separate building.
I will do a ton of research that never makes it into descriptions, but I hope it adds flavor to book. And one thing I try to do when writing description is to use words that reflect the mood of the scene. For instance, if the scene is light, snow will be fluffy and sparkly. If the scene is heavier, snowfall will close in on the character and feel oppressive. Same applies to characters. If you're in the head of a character who distrusts the person she's interacting with, her description of that character is going to be different than if she trusts him. I hope this helps. But he handed it to me in the brown bag it had been sacked in at the store. I dug around in that brown bag, and he asked, "What I was looking for?" I told him the receipt. He asked, "Why? Isn't that rude?" I said, "Since you couldn't be bothered to wrap it, you probably didn't bother taking the receipt out." We argued a bit on whether the brown bag constituted "wrapping." The following year, I got another bag of kisses. But he'd put them in a box and wrapped them in the grocery bag. You know, cut and folded and taped. We both had a good laugh and he's never given me a gift in a grocery bag since.(less)
