I started reading Clockwork Angel a while back and ended up buying the rest of the Infernal Devices series. I'm currently reading book 3..

To be honest... I've been reading nonfiction. Just finished The Making of the Atomic Bomb and, after a pause for The Crown Tower, just started Bruce Carton's civil war trilogy.
Haydensdad wrote: "Still pushing through Gardens of the Moon not really enjoying it all and I am half done."If you're not enjoying it, why read it? Life is too short.
The Last Werewolf. I like it so far, but it has too much sexual nonsense for me. It's actually pulling me in and making me curious of what's going to happen. It's also much shorter than what I've been reading recently, which is a nice change

I am re-reading Forests of the Heart by Charles de Lint and enjoying it just as much, in fact, even more the second time around. For those of you who have never read him, this would be a good book to start with. IMO his adult Newford novels are is best, much better than his YA novels or older works.
I finished The Neon Court, which was wonderful and creative, but I'm getting awfully tired of Hamletesque bloodbaths. I started Darkfever, but I'm having real trouble with it. I'm at 15% and can't seem to force myself to go on, but I'm not sure what I'd read instead if I did dnf it, as I really don't want to read another dark or emotionally taxing book right now. Oh, well.
Not dark or emotionally taxing UF:Gil's All Fright Diner or any of his books. Silly. Or Discount Armageddon.
I'm reading the last book in the Infernal Devices Clockwork Princess .. I kind of find this one a bit too slow in compare to the previous books.. too many long conversations that could have been reduced..
Carol wrote: "Not dark or emotionally taxing UF:Gil's All Fright Diner or any of his books. Silly. Or Discount Armageddon."
Thanks! Yes, Martinez is definitely a nice light read. I liked Gil's, although I think my favourite book from him is probably The Automatic Detective. Discount Armageddon isn't in my library, but it's heading onto my TBR...looks cute.
I'm reading misfits , debtors , drunkards and thieves by Timothy Scott and its OK . Not groundbreaking or anything kind of a R.E.Feist feel to it which I used to love in my younger days but now it's just a bit to fluffy and paint by numbers for my tastes
Patti wrote: "What about dark taxing UF books without romance and or sexual nonsense?"In what context? That's generally my favorite genre--I tend to avoid "romantic sexual nonsense" at all costs (unless it's a BOM, which is the case for Darkfever).
Griffin's books (first in the series: A Madness of Angels) most definitely fulfill this, as well as being quirky and fun and creative and impressively imaginative. It's just that she killed all of my favorite characters.
Again.
In extremely horrific ways.
Again.
Third book, third time this happened. Most of the series I'm addicted to and not finished with are no-to-low-romance and dark (e.g. The Devil You Know), so I don't feel like swapping to them right now. Do you have a suggestion in mind? I'm always happy to add to my TBR list...
Hmmm the only thing that comes to mind now is Joe Abercrombie's series. I see you've read the first one, but my favorite is Best Served Cold. It's just this girl who goes around getting revenge in hilariously Quentin Tarantino type violence. You don't really need to have read the first three. It's a standalone. I'm trying to find more books like this. The book I'm reading now, The Last Werewolf is a pretty cool uf without romance (so far) but there are so sexual nonsensical parts. And it's kind of funny. And maybe the sandman slim series if you haven't checked that out yet, although I wasn't really a fanBest Served Cold
Nope I take back the last werewolf. I was sort of interested, but this nonsense is too detailed and hard to skip around
I'm almost done with
, and I needed an emotional break. (It appears that I really cannot survive more that a week without bastard swords, dark hooded cloaks, and campaigns to save the empire...)
So I started The Legend of Nightfall
. The paperback has been sitting on the "to-read" shelf the longest (doesn't even have an ebook). The theme, amoral thief/assassin turned "good", is my favorite fantasy trope (too many years playing a Rogue in too many Dungeons and Dragons campaigns, I suppose). This one is well done: interesting, multidimensional characters, good dialogue, and a unique magic system that is NOT a Deus ex Machina. Sorcerers Bad, Thief Good; simplicity I can live with, LOL.
Alphabet of Thorn idk if I'm so into this book because it's really good, or because I've been so busy with homework that this is the first opportunity I've had to read in like a week (which is crazy for me). It's so cute so far. I have to admit, I kind of took this book out from the library because I fell in love with the cover art. *drool*
Hey all, back from the bush and finally have some decent internet!Been inspired by Carly's tenacity at slogging through the Urban Fantasy cannon and tried tackling some of the classics myself. At the moment I'm slowly, slooooowly making my way through Neverwhere. Its...well, I don't quite know what it is, or how I feel about it (which is unusual for me). Hopefully I'll have a better idea by the time I finish it. =/
Re-reading The Heir of Novron in anticipation of The Rose and Thorn due out...well tomorrow but not delivered here for another week.
Just finished reading
& I LOVED IT! Eagerly waiting to read the 2nd installment!Currently jumping back and forth between
&
Sophie, sorry to hear you're finding Neverwhere a drag--I remember that I absolutely adored it, but more for the richness and quixotic imagination of it all than for character or plot. I remember deciding never to reread it in case the wonder and delight wore off on reread.I finished up Darkfever, which wasn't quite my cup of tea. Now I'm jumping back and forth between Bitten and my umpteenth read of Feet of Clay. Oh, and my hold on The Ocean at the End of the Lane just came in, so I'll be starting that. Gaiman tends to be a bit hit or miss for me, but I've seen a lot of enthusiastic reviews, so I'm hoping for great things.

It is this groups's monthly read http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...
I've started The Complete Sherlock Holmes and Tales of Terror and Mystery. I feel bad for not finishing Lord of Chaos first, but that's not on my kindle, and so it's hard to take with me when I go places. :P
I had to interrupt my regularly scheduled reading to devour MJS's The Rose and the Thorn and now I'm having Dexter's Final Cut for dessert.
Oh, well, I failed to finish Among Thieves (about halfway) and The Ocean at the End of the Lane 73%. Giving up fantasy for a while.
I am scared to start The Ocean at the End of the Lane for fear it will sink me into a deep dark depression. :)I was really enjoying Bitten until it took a turn for the stupid.
Got mad at the *very last paragraph* of Forged in Blood I so I bought the last book of the series and read the epilogue. :D
Managed to get through Warrior with The Native Star on my get to it very soon list.
Failed to be able to finish either Geekomancy or Dragon Bones though have come off of my Alpha & Omega series high so that I am more able to enjoy it now.
I find myself tired of "romanticism" (way too much 'damp'ness causing me to roll my eyes and turn all cyncial) and just want a light hearted adventure. Found Howl's Moving Castle at the library and am enjoying it.

Just curious, what happened with Bitten? I read it so long ago, I forget what might have gone wrong with it.
I love love love Howl's Moving Castle, glad you're enjoying so far =]

Only if you're seven years old.

Snarktastic Sonja wrote: Might spoil someone so: [spoilers removed]"Ah. Yup, remember now. Have to go back and Reread that series.
Just finished reading
and
and I VERY MUCH recommend
It's amazing, you will not be disappointed!!Im hoping to get started on
by the end of the day since the library doesnt carry
Done with Neverwhere...have to ruminate on it for a while. I didn't NOT enjoy it, but it gave me very peculiar feelings I'm having trouble defining.Giving A Telling of Stars another go. Tried reading it a few years ago, but I put it down for some reason.
Finishing up Roger Zelazny's Sign of Chaos today.:)
Then I plan on moving to Juggling by no particular author.
I've always wanted to learn, and now seems like a good time.
;D

Yeah! When my boys were little, I spent time to learn to juggle and do a couple of card tricks...it was time well spent :D.

:D
I'm hoping it will get me into some physical activity at home.
Though most likely .... I'll just be chasing after the juggling balls.
I'll have to get my pup involved...LOL.... She isn't a fetch kind of dog, though.
I am having a major "book hangover" after reading Forests of the Heart and having a really hard time starting any thing new. I tried The Last Unicorn, which has been on my want to read list for ages and I could not get past a few chapters. I guess it is not the right moment. Am now trying The Troll Bridge which at least I am getting through, liking but not loving it.
Snarktastic Sonja wrote: "Sophie wrote: "Just curious, what happened with Bitten? I read it so long ago, I forget what might have gone wrong with it."Might spoil someone so: [spoilers removed]"
I did not like Bitten much either Sonja, and as a result did not read any of the other books in that series until a few years later. The next ones Stolen and Dime Store Magic are a lot better. I have not read any further in the series, so I guess I don't like it that much. I prefer Patricia Briggs werewolves!
Just finished Wool Omnibus (or Wool 1-5) by Hugh Howey. Lots of hype so I wasn't sure it would be that good, but I wasn't disappointed. Movie rights have been optioned, could be a great movie.

Then, of course, I try to pick up the hold one day late, and they'd returned it. So I'm back around #50 in the hold list. Sigh.
I finished Bitten and I wasn't too happy with it either. I think I've just been reading too many books in that subgenre lately. The tropes are getting to me. I'm thinking about reading Snake Agent next, but I'm bookless at the moment, and have no time to go to the gym anyway; I'm not sure which direction the causal relationship there is, though.
I'm starting to remember now, why I put down A Telling of Stars - it has all the fantasy tropes, but it doesn't feel like a fantasy. There's lots of semi-incomprehensible descriptions of a gorgeous setting, which is pretty...but not very fun.I'm giving it three more chapters, and if it doesn't "pick up" I'm calling it quits.

I have been one of the "Constant Readers" since "The Shining" in '77 and just can not resist the gravitational pull of a new Stephen King book...
