Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) I'm currently reading The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray, which is the last book of the Gemma Doyle series. I'm actually a bit sad to see it end. I've really enjoyed these books. Although, I am a bit upset that I just heard about them. I feel like I'm not appreciating them properly because while I didn't read them one after the other, I've been reading them all in the span of about two months. I think if you pick up a series and you end up loving it, it's better if there are still a couple of more books to come out. Yes, you have to wait and waiting sucks, but the anticipation of waiting for that next book makes you savor it so much more when it comes out. I don't know....Maybe it's just me.

Josie (maid_marian) | 126 comments Fiona wrote: How you finding it Josie?"

I've finished it already actually! And I'm sorry to say that I didn't think it was up to the standard of the other two, despite having some very cool ideas (like the lubbockins, and the house, with its many ways)... I feel like it could have... gone deeper, maybe. It just felt like the story skimmed the surface and oh, the antagonists are defeated (without ever seeming to pose too much of a threat), everyone's made happy, THE END. And I found Charmain slightly annoying, but that's just me :)

message 403: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I finished The Merlin Conspiracy last night, and American Born Chinesetoday, and am starting Annie on My Mind this afternoon.

message 404: by Jamie (new)

Jamie I finished Anne of the Island last night and I'm still listening to I am the Messenger (I'm not loving it like I thought I would, but it's okay). I think I may start my re-read of HP tonight.

Stephanie (sbez05) | 30 comments Alisha -

I'm reading The Sweet Far Thing, too! And I know what you mean ... it's nice getting in on the front-end of the series, because then you have to wait in anticipation with everyone else, which makes it fun. I just picked them up a couple of months ago.

message 406: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm half way through Graceling. I am enjoying it so far.

message 407: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Loved it, of course! Was there ever any doubt? LOL

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 719 comments You ladies will have to tell me how you like The Sweet Far Thing... I still haven't read it.... I bought it the day it came out, but I'm too scared it will end badly...

message 409: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 390 comments I just finished Howl's Moving Castle for the first park of task 25.4. It was a fun book to read! Now I'm reading the 2nd book of the series Castle in the Air.

message 410: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments I'm currently listening to I Am the Messenger and reading The Hero and the Crown. I was going to try and play this new game I bought, but it hates me. So bleh. Back to reading.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 342 comments Yesterday at Target (no, of course I didn't go into Target for the purpose of buying books, but, alas) one of the books I bought was Marked by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast. It is a teen fiction book dealing with vampires. When substituting in the high schools, I usually ask some of the students (especially when I see them reading)to recommend some of their favorite or current reads. This spring a girl in one of the classes told me she really like this series, The House of Night series, and Marked is the first one. I think she was reading Betrayed, the second in the series. I hope to get to the first one in the next month.

message 412: by Natalee (new)

Natalee (nataleem00) | 459 comments Kathy, those are good books. Quick, fun reads. I think they're for older teens since there are some references to sex.

message 413: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 342 comments Thanks for the feedback, Natalee. Yeah, the girl who told me about the books is a junior or senior, so I figured that they were an older teen series.

I think I'm going to start The Calder Game [image error] by Blue Balliett before or after supper.

Eden Silverfox (tsalagi_writer) | 265 comments I'm reading Charmed Life by Diana Wynne Jones.

The series gets better as it goes on, but it's always pretty flawed, in my opinion. Quick and fun as Natalee said, but you may not want to invest more money or shelf space on it.

message 416: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) I'm re-reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone at the moment. I haven't reread the series in a couple of years and since I just got the box set, I decided to work a couple of Harry Potter books into the challenge. After re-reading this book countless times, I'm still enjoying it.

message 421: by Natalee (new)

Natalee (nataleem00) | 459 comments I finally had time to read last night! I'm really getting into The Book of Lost Things. I'm loving it! So far, it's lived up to my high hopes.

message 422: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) Started New Moon this morning...I'm excited for it. I was so late coming to this whole Twilight thing, although it's nice that I don't have to wait for any books to come out. Although, I would really like Stephenie Meyer to hurry up and come out with Midnight Sun!

message 424: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments Loved Lament The Faerie Queen's Deception and am going to start Tamar A Novel of Espionage, Passion, and Betrayal later today. I also downloaded my free audible book - I chose The Name of the Wind and may start listening to the first of 27 hours of this book while I work out.

message 425: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 342 comments Well, I did start The Calder Game by Blue Balliett, and I am enjoying it. This book is the third in the series, the first two being Chasing Vermeer and The Wright 3. I've read Chasing Vermeer and enjoyed it, too, but I still need to read The Wright 3. The Calder Game features the sculptures of Alexander Calder, whom the main character in this series, Calder Pillay, is named after. Calder and his father have traveled to England and are staying in a small town/village called Woodstock, where an Alexander Calder sculpture, The Minotaur, has recently been donated to and placed in the town square. Not everyone is happy about it. Once again, Calder and his two friends are to be involved in solving a mystery with a theme. I thoroughly enjoy this series.

message 426: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cyndil62) I just started The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart and think it is going to be a fun read! I guess it is classified as a young adult, not sure. Has anyone else read it?

message 427: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I am reading The Game and can already tell it wont be long enough. I have Anne of Green Gables on my nightstand ready to read next.

message 429: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments Hey Cindy, I just read that book and loved it! There is a sequel out to it as well. :)

message 430: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cyndil62) Kristen, I am caught up in the story too! Glad to hear you liked it!!

Kathy (readr4ever) | 342 comments Jamie wrote: "Just finished The Perks of Being a Wallflower and now on to Crank"

Jamie, I recently read Crank and its sequel, Glass. I thought both were very enlightening into the addiction of meth. Apparently, it is the "monster" it is said to be.

I fell in love with this story.

Cindy wrote: "I just started The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart and think it is going to be a fun read! I guess it is classified as a young adult, not sure. Has anyone else rea..."

I started to read it sometime last summer, and even though I thought it was cute, I couldn't seem to stick with it. I intend to try again for the challenge, though.

Fiona and Allison: what's with the Anne-dissing? Fiona, are you refusing to read Anne? That was my favorite book for a big chunk of my life, and I still love Anne; I'm not sure how any book lover could not love Anne...

message 435: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) yeah Misty, I have been pushing Anne on Fiona for MONTHS and when she finally picked it up she moaned about it for like 20 pages and gave up :P I'm very upset with her about it.

message 436: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) (I still <3 you though Fi, don't worry ;)

message 437: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1505 comments This hurts my heart a little. Granted, she does talk a lot. But if you stick with her, the things she says are hilarious. And the things she gets herself into, and how seriously she takes everything. Montgomery got what it is to be a kid, I think. She captured that great time of imagination. Have you ever seen the tv version? Meaghan Follows was Anne.

message 438: by Natalee (new)

Natalee (nataleem00) | 459 comments I think the chatter is endearing and cute in the movie but overkill in the book. I think I didn't mind it as much reading it last month because I had already seen the movie.

Allison (inconceivably) Misty wrote: "This hurts my heart a little. Granted, she does talk a lot. But if you stick with her, the things she says are hilarious. And the things she gets herself into, and how seriously she takes everyt..."

I agree, I canNOT believe how perfectly she takes up the character. I adore those movies just for her and Gilbert...not so much for the veering away from the book plots.

message 440: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I'm willing to kill Alli-chan a little to read Anne. I have to see if that constant chatter will irritate me or make her endearing. I hate that I have gone this long without reading it, and really only got it this time to help Allison over the sting of Fiona's rejection!!!! God knows we push each other enough, there has to be something that isn't loved.

(NOT SHOGUN!!!!!!!!)

I just finished "Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac" by Gabrielle Zevin, and I liked it sooo much more than "Elsewhere". It's about figuring out who you are, and having the power to decide who you want to be.

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 44 comments finished Crank all in one sitting today! It was a really great book! So interesting!

message 443: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (hannah_rose555) Hello everybody! I'm new to the group! I just finished read an amazing, and I mean AMAZING book. I wanted to share it with you. It's called "Thirteen Reasons Why" by the author Jay Asher. Please search the title and read the description. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone under 14. It has some rather mature topics. This book forever changed my perspective on life. Please, please just give it a look. As a teenager myself, I believe every single high school student in the world should read this book.

Heather, I loved Elsewhere, so I'm definitely going to have to check out Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac.

I agree with you Jamie about Crank. It was a quick read, too, kind of just kept you there until it was done. Now read Glass.

message 446: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 342 comments BananaGirl, I have thought about reading Thirteen Reasons, but I haven't gotten to it yet. I will put it on my list.

Jennifer Wardrip (geniusjen) | 2 comments Just finished reading both THE HUNGER GAMES and CATCHING FIRE (BK 2 - coming out 9/1) within 2 1/2 days. Couldn't...stop...reading.

Just a super amazing series so far. Can't wait for book three, which probably won't be here until late in 2010!! :(

message 449: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I am beginning...Anne of Green Gables!

Allison...
Oh Alli-chan...

message 450: by Natalee (new)

Natalee (nataleem00) | 459 comments BananaGirl, I read Thirteen Reasons Why and so did my daughter. I think John Asher is a talented new writer who flawlessly changed narrators without losing the reading. I thought it was a good book but there's something I didnt quite like about it but I cant put my finger on it. The overall message was good, though... how things you say and do, no matter how small, can and probably do effect other people. I would recommend teens read it for that reason alone. It was good but not great in my opinion. Had the potential to be great, though.
