I was never able to get that much into the Gemma Doyle trilogy, as much as I really wanted - and expected - to.

It's not so much a question of picking up, because it's not really slowly paced. It's just that she's kind of a cheesy writer sometimes, and I find myself rolling my eyes. I want to like them more than I am able.
Also,
Linda wrote: "It reminds me of The Outsiders - about a group of misfit/outcasts at a boys camp..."
Yeah, but do they have cool names like Ponyboy and Soda Pop? :p
I've also started Pretties, and I have to say...I'm pretty impressed with this series so far. The beginning of Uglies was a bit slow, but once it got started I've been on the edge of my seat ever since (well, if one can be on the edge of their seat after waiting a couple months to pick up the next book).
Misty wrote: "It's not so much a question of picking up, because it's not really slowly paced. It's just that she's kind of a cheesy writer sometimes, and I find myself rolling my eyes...."Are you referring to things she chooses to have happen in the books or the way she expresses them - technique?
Inoli wrote: "Are you referring to things she chooses to have happen in the books or the way she expresses them - technique?"Definitely technique. That is always what I am picky on. I am a firm believer in willing suspension of disbelief, so you can make just about anything happen in your books as long as you do it well and lay the groundwork for it. It's her language (especially dialogue and inner monologue) that bothers me, and some of the choices she makes in her storytelling. It just sometimes seems immature, like I'm reading something written by a girl in high school. At least, the first book did. I am not far into #2, that's why I'm hoping for growth, but I fear I'll be disappointed. I am only a handful of pages in and I think I've rolled my eyes twice. If not for the challenge, I'd probably send this back to the library.
And Allison, I love the Uglies series. Pretties was my favorite, but they are all so fascinating once you can get into the flow of things. And they are kind of eerily believable.
Linda Grace wrote: "I just finished The Amber Spyglass and am about to start A Little Princess."How did you like The Amber Spyglass?
I so agree Misty-that was a great way of describing the series. I'll have to remember (and steal) that when I'm explaining them to people.
I liked The Subtle Knife more. I still enjoyed The Amber Spyglass.
*** SPOILERS BELOW ***
I liked how the romance turned out in the end. Like the saying goes it's better to be loved than never to have loved at all. I liked how the ending wasn't all happily ever after because that is not very realistic most of the time. I also enjoyed hearing all the bible references and the books take on Christianity... very interesting.

Eden wrote: "I'm reading Evermore by Alyson Noel."That book was reccommended to me, how is it?
I am currently reading Incantation by Alice Hoffman.
Gail wrote: "I just finished Boy in the Striped Pajamas"What did you think, Gail? I had mixed emotions. I thought the movie was actually better.
I finished The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. It was so good! Now I'm reading Bewitching Season. It's off to a good start.
I am currently reading Anthem by Ayn Rand. It's my first book by Rand and it isn't too complicated and over my head. Overall, I am glad I decided to start with this one and not The Fountainhead.
I'm glad you liked The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Natalee. It's definitely one of my "top favorites".
April wrote: "I am currently reading Anthem by Ayn Rand. It's my first book by Rand and it isn't too complicated and over my head. I bought her everything by her one year for Christmas, and as I handed them over, I thought "I should really read these," and that was the last of it. I really should...
Natalee wrote: "Gail wrote: "I just finished Boy in the Striped Pajamas"What did you think, Gail? I had mixed emotions. I thought the movie was actually better.
I haven't seen the movie yet, but I sort of liked the book for its different point of view. I thought Bruno seemed younger than 9, but I could believe he was quite naive and sheltered. Still, I much prefer "The Book Thief" (Zusak), "Sarah's Key" ( Tatiana de Rosnay), Night(Wiesel) , Diary of Anne Frank or Corrie ten Boom's book on the subject of the Holocaust
About a third of the way done with Breaking Dawn. I'm going to try to finish it today or tomorrow. I'll be sad when this series is done :( (Although not quite as sad as when I finished Harry Potter...)
Misty, if you haven't taken any sort of philosophy class, I would recommend Anthem to start with. The philosophy in it is simple, and it's a very fast read. So if you don't really care for it, in just three hours, your pain will be over. If you have taken a philosophy class, I still recommend it, as it will just enhance the book for you. :-DI just finished Mates, Dates, and Inflatable Bras by Cathy Hopkins about five minutes ago. It was another incredibly fast read. I could definately sympathize and relate to the main character, Lucy.
I'm about to begin Summer of the Monkeys by Wilson Rawls. It's been on the TBR forever, plus it's (IMO) classic YA/children's.
Jess wrote: "About a third of the way done with Breaking Dawn. I'm going to try to finish it today or tomorrow. I'll be sad when this series is done :( (Although not quite as sad as when I finish..."Just read The Host when you're done. In some ways, I liked that better.
I just finished Rebel Angels and think I am going to start Thirteenth Child. I'm also reading Little Women intermittenly, and thinking about taking To Kill a Mockingbird to the beach tomorrow. I might be crazy.

I'm not very far into the book, but I really like it so far.
Haven't contributed to this Group in a while. I've been distracted by reads that would be hard to classify as YA--Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle, and now I'm deep into Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon. But I still have Anne of Green Gables and The Wind in the Willows very near the top of the TBR pile.
What a cool pair of July Group reads! To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favorite 5-star reads ever. And The Book Thief's another very-near-the-top TBR.
So many books; so little time.
I just started reading Impulse for task # 5.3 (recommended by my son's girlfriend). This book is very intense and heart wrenching!
I just finished Summer of the Monkeys by Wilson Rawls and am now on to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. I suppose it really is a children's book, but who says young adults can't appreciate children's novels. I'm going to try and read this as a Populist story. (as in the populism movement pertaining to farmers and William Jennings Bryan, blah blah I'm a history nerd blah blah blah)
I had every intention of starting Anne of Green Gables last night, and then I went and picked up In the Woods by Tana French. I may actually stop on it, but I'm such a stickler for staying with a book I've started. Dang.
Kathy wrote: "I had every intention of starting Anne of Green Gables last night, and then I went and picked up In the Woods by Tana French. I may actually stop on it, but I'm such a st..."I have looked at that book so many times! Maybe its the cool cover... Let me know what you think.
April wrote: "I just finished Summer of the Monkeys by Wilson Rawls and am now on to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. Baum had some things to say, and Oz was just a medium.
Kathy wrote: "Natalee, I am continuing In the Woods, think it's going to be a good one."Great! Can't wait to hear your opinion of it. :-)
Started The Mysterious Benedict Society. Or, I should say "restarted" because I started to read it once before and stopped about 90 pages in. Don't remember why...
I am reading the Boy in the Striped Pajamas. I just finished Don't Judge a Girl By Her Cover by Ally Carter, 3rd in a series, love them!!
I just got back from seeing HP6...I thought about everybody in this group when I saw a preview for a movie of Where The Wild Things Are :)
HP did just come out didn't it? Did you go to a midnight showing in costume? :-) I'm pretty sure my sister did that with one of them.I'm reading how i live now. It's a Printz winner, so it should be good. I'm not in love with it yet though.
Allison wrote: "I just got back from seeing HP6...I thought about everybody in this group when I saw a preview for a movie of Where The Wild Things Are :)"My son, who is 22, and I are going to see HP6 tonight. I was thinking that I owe a lot to J.K. Rowling. My son and I started sharing the Harry Potter experience with the first book when he was in elementary school, and here we are still sharing it. Is that great or what?
I just finished Scott Westerfeld's Uglies/Pretties/Specials/Extras series. Found them to be quick reads and very interesting. The 4th was my least favorite, but I thought they were really good!
Kristen wrote: "A teaser for Percy Jackson? *dies* I can't wait to see HP"Im with you Kristen what teaser for Percy Jackson: *dies* that is not something I want to hear lol.
We are taking my son to see the latest HP for his 9th birthday, Im hopping to take him tomorrow on his birthday but it may have to wait until things settles down around here.
A Where the Wild Things Are movie?! I am super excited now.I had said I was starting Mysterious Benedict Society, which was true at the time. But I picked up Sunshine by Robin McKinley at the library yesterday, and I told myself I was only going to read a few pages. I'm half way through. My last few challenge books will just have to wait.
well it was a really crappy Percy teaser :P it barely shows anything at all. Just him in the elevator.
Yeah, I saw it, too. I had no idea they were actually making a Percy Jackson movie. I'm that much more excited to read the book now. My B&N order just cannot ship fast enough!
