Natalee (nataleem00) | 459 comments All you Goose Girl girls got me... I started it two days ago but haven't had a chance to really get far. I was a litle "hmmmm" about it since it didn't look like something I would like. However, so far, it's really good. I can't wait to get back to it later today.

message 252: by Natalee (new)

Natalee (nataleem00) | 459 comments Loving The Goose Girl! I was about 100 pages in and wondering why it was called that. I get it now! Anyways, great book. I planned on going to Borders today (40% off coupon... WooooHoooo!) to pick up Wintergirls and A Northern Light but now I want another book by Hale, too. What to do, what to do?!?!

message 253: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Glad to hear you're enjoying it, Natalee! I started Enna Burning last night and it's drawn me in. Maybe not as much as The Goose Girl did, but it's still really good. All of your options sound great, though! Good luck making that decision!

message 254: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 342 comments I'm reading Rules Rules by Cynthia Lord by Cynthia Lord. I love, love, love it. Did I mention that I love it? It is about a 12 year old girl with a younger brother. The brother is autistic, and it is a witty, wonderful look at how the girl deals with that, making new friends, and discovering what people with disabilities have to offer us.

message 255: by Samantha McNulty (new)

Samantha McNulty I'm not actually reading a YA book at the minute. I'm reading The Shunning by Beverly Lewis, about the Amish community

message 256: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 719 comments I just read Forever Princess last night. (And when I say last night, I mean 1:00 am to 5:30 am this morning... eek!)

I kind of suspected which way it would go (who am I kidding... I knew it), but I didn't expect to like it. And I really really did. I was VERY VERY happy with the way the freaking ridiculously long series ended! I love Meg Cabot! She ALWAYS has happy endings...

message 257: by Natalee (last edited May 24, 2009 06:41AM) (new)

Natalee (nataleem00) | 459 comments Heather, I am so glad you mentioned Thirteen Reasons Why. I have it in one of my TBR stacks. I was going to read it for the challenge as a new author. I am glad you said it was good.

Jamie, I finished The Goose Girl - loved, loved, LOVED it! I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. When I read the back cover, I wasn't too sure about it. But I had heard so many good things about it that I gave it a shot. I am really glad I did. Borders didn't have any of her other ones today, though. :(

Moving on to A Northern Light now....

message 258: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments Reading Fool Moon now, which I am surprised to find in many teen collections.

message 259: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) Finished A Northern Light yesterday...LOVED it! Hope you enjoy it Natalee! Would love to hear what you think of it.

message 260: by Natalee (new)

Natalee (nataleem00) | 459 comments I started it last night and so far it's great. I couldn't put it down and read until my eyes refused to stay open. Dang those eyes!! I'll keep ya posted. ;-)

message 261: by Jamie (new)

Jamie I'm glad you loved The Goose Girl, Natalee! I had a similar experience, and it turned out to be a new favorite. It's too bad Borders didn't have the others, but I'm sure that helped your decision making! I'm looking forward to reading A Northern Light, as well. It's good to hear the positive reviews for it here.

message 262: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 342 comments I've had such great reading with YA my past two books, The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman and Rules by Cynthia Lord that I almost hated to switch off to some adult fiction. However, Dead and Gone Dead and Gone (Sookie Stackhouse, #9) by Charlaine Harris by Charlaine Harris continues the Southern Vampire series that I love. I started it last night and it promises to be another great Sookie Stackhouse adventure with vamps and weres and more.

message 263: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) yeah Kathy...I thought Dead and Gone was pretty good :)

message 264: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 342 comments Oh good, Allison. Thanks for the positive feedback.

message 265: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I'm really bummed I put Goose Girl down. To those of you (well all of you!) that liked it - what was it that you really loved about the book? The plot, her writing style, the characters, what? I may pick it up again if you guys talk me into it.

message 266: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments I do think it was the plot and writing styles and it was nice to see a strong girl character. Did you get the part when she starts being a goose girl? I really started to like her interactions with the goose boy and dug my heels into it around that time.

message 267: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I didn't get that far....hmmm....

message 268: by Natalee (new)

Natalee (nataleem00) | 459 comments I liked it right from the start but it really started clicking around page 100. I love the characters and writing and the story itself is just lovely. I really enjoyed it. It's a fairly easy and quick read... Maybe read until she's the goose girl (around 100 pages) and see if you like it any better.

message 269: by Jamie (last edited May 25, 2009 07:36AM) (new)

Jamie Natalee wrote: "I liked it right from the start but it really started clicking around page 100. I love the characters and writing and the story itself is just lovely. I really enjoyed it. It's a fairly easy and..."

I feel the same way.

This book really caught me from the start. I thought the writing was beautiful - particularly the way she depicts the elements of nature. I found Ani to be particularly endearing, too. She really grows throughout the book, if she is what's bothering you so far, Laura. I did love the plot, though, too. I thought The Goose Girl was a page-turner!

message 270: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments I just finished Fool Moon and am going to start The Foreshadowing this afternoon.

message 271: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 342 comments I loved Dead and Gone. I'm on to Grave Goods Grave Goods (Mistress of the Art of Death, Book 3) by Ariana Franklin by Ariana Franklin, the 3rd in the Adelia Aguilar series, another great series.

message 272: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I started Uglieslast night. I only bought the first two in the series, and can tell I will want all four! *sigh*

message 273: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 342 comments Kandice, I have the first book in the Uglies series. I need to make sure I have it on my summer reading list. It sounds so interesting. Let us know what you think about it when you finish it.

message 274: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Well, I can tll you, it's very, very interesting. I am a little leery, because I read Peeps / Parasite Positiveby him and lovd it until...the end. The end was awful. I am hoping that wont be the case here, which is why I only bought the second one so far. I'll let you know.

message 275: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 390 comments I just Finished The Secret Garden so now I'm back to reading Graceling.

message 276: by Meg (new)

Meg I am reading the Dark Is Rising Sequence-Book 1-Over Sea,Under Stone. My first experience w/ Susan Cooper. I'm only on Chapter 5 but so far, I'm interested.

message 277: by Natalee (new)

Natalee (nataleem00) | 459 comments I started Stargirl last night. It's not really for the challenge. I just wanted to read it. I like A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly so much that I bought The Tea Rose off eBay yesterday, too.

message 278: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) Meg--I read The Dark is Rising for school when I was younger. I always hesitated to read the series because I like that book so much. I'll have to check them out!

Natalee--You'll have to let me know how The Tea Rose is...it's on my TBR shelf because I loved A Northern Light so much.

message 279: by Jamie (new)

Jamie I'm finishing up Size 12 is Not Fat today and I'll be moving on to Shadowland and Anne of Avonlea (audio).

message 280: by Jensownzoo (new)

Jensownzoo I just finished Strange Angels by Lili St.Crow last night, a YA urban fantasy. The only thing that distinguishes this as YA is the age of the characters and the lack of sex, otherwise the author didn't "dumb down" her writing style at all, to my delight.

message 281: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (angelashly) | 23 comments I read Saving Zoe- Alyson Noel and Something Happened- Greg Logsted over the long weekend.

I am 180 pages into The Book Thief

message 282: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1505 comments So, I am reading a book called Betwixt that was one of my random library picks for the challenge, and I am just going to go ahead and tell everyone not to waste their time on it. In theory it sounds kinda neat (the three main characters are fairie changelings -- I think -- and it looks like they are going to be pretty high up on the totem pole, but for now are angsty teens) but my lord the writing is terrible! It's weird, cause its like it was written by a teen who is completely out of touch with teenagerdom. The writing style is young (little plot development, cliches galore, weird skips and jumps, etc), but the "youthfulness" of the story is practically non-existent. The dialogue is horrendous and out of touch, awkward and cheesy, the characters are flat or weirdly contradictory, things come out of nowhere or aren't followed through, ad there are all of the hints and general "ominousness" so heavy handed that I feel like the book should come with its own dum-dum-dum sound effects. If it weren't for the challenge I would have put this book down (read thrown it out a window) ages ago. My other random lib pick was excellent. Figures. Must have balance...
(ok, enough whining from me)

Alexis (alexabexis) Misty wrote: "So, I am reading a book called Betwixt that was one of my random library picks for the challenge, and I am just going to go ahead and tell everyone not to waste their time on it. In ..."

At least you're getting a lot of pages out of it? That's a big one.

message 284: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1505 comments I would say that't the only good thing about it, but its more pages of horrible writing to read.

message 285: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (alexabexis) How far in are you? I'd stop and randomly pick another book - and then check the average rating on GR. Betwixt has a 2.8.

message 286: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (alexabexis) I finally finished Anne of Green Gables so I'm starting Dreamhunter (The Dreamhunter Duet, Book 1) by Elizabeth Knox tonight. It's actually the first half of a really long book, but it comes pretty highly recommended. I managed to find both in the library. I think I'm going to use it for Task 25.1 in the challenge, as a fantasy novel.

message 287: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments I'm closing in on the end of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (forgot my book at work though), so now I've started The Book Thief.

message 288: by Natalee (new)

Natalee (nataleem00) | 459 comments I finished Stargirl on Thursday night and moved on to Wintergirls last night. It's pretty good. It's written differently and you really have to pay attention. It's not an easy read and I like that aspect of it.

message 289: by Natalee (new)

Natalee (nataleem00) | 459 comments Misty:
Glad you mentioned how bad Betwixt is. I have it in my closet but it can just stay there. ;-) Sorry you didn't enjoy it. I hate when I get books like that. I always feel like I have to finish them because I already invested time in them. So I waste even more time reading the rest.

message 290: by Jamie (new)

Jamie What did you think of Stargirl, Natalee? I read it a few months ago and thought it was pretty good, just not quite as good as I'd expected. I don't know why, but it didn't really grab me.

message 291: by Jamie (last edited May 30, 2009 08:06AM) (new)

Jamie I finished a couple of books yesterday - Shadowland & Grimm's Fairy Stories. The former was enjoyable, but I really wasn't a fan of the latter. I know these tales are classics, but they got to be so redundant that they failed to keep me interested. I'm starting River Secrets today.

message 292: by Natalee (new)

Natalee (nataleem00) | 459 comments Jamie, I liked the idea of Stargirl but it wasn't as great as I had hoped. It had a good message but I thought it could've been better. I didn't like it enough to read the next one. Which is disappointing because it really did have a positive message.... Individuality, random acts of kindness, seeing the good in everyone... All that good stuff!

message 293: by Jamie (new)

Jamie I completely agree. As far as positive messages go, I recently read Anne of Green Gables and I thought its similar message came across very well. I think that some of Stargirl's quirkiness was a bit too much for me, but I did love that she was so good at heart.

message 294: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen | 229 comments Natalee, I heard the second one was nowhere near as good as the first, so I think you'd have been even more disappointed in that one.

I read all of Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman last night--you should all read that one, it's super short and takes about an hour to read (if that), I thought it was wonderful. Now I've finally moved on to A Northern Light.

message 295: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 342 comments I started My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult last night. I know it's not really a YA book, but I know that the high school girls where I substitute teach most read Picoult. I'm reading this one now because my daughter just finished it, and we both want to read it before we go see the movie together. It's not often these days that we read a book together, so I had to fit it into my schedule.

message 296: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments Okay, having to sit through an oil change and fluid flush, I am now finally halfway through Airman and am really loving it. I'm still reading The Book Thief as well and have started listening to Wildwood Dancing.

message 297: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 342 comments Kristen wrote: "Okay, having to sit through an oil change and fluid flush, I am now finally halfway through Airman and am really loving it. I'm still reading The Book Thief as well and ..."

That's what is so great about being a reader. Where most people would be tapping their foot impatiently waiting through these sorts of everyday waits, we readers look at them as opportunities to sit and read. I know I'm one of the few people who are annoyed when I get taken right in to a doctor's appointment. How dare they deny me my reading time wait.

message 298: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments Haha. You're so funny Kathy. I also read my books or listen to them when I work out as an extra incentive.

message 299: by Lori (new)

Lori (heylorikay) | 35 comments Kathy how is My Sister's Keeper? Ive been wanting to read it but heard it wasnt really worth it. Of course that was by someone who didnt really read haha. I just started reading the alchemist. I actaully really like it. Its fun to read about Nicholas Flamel since he is in so many of the YA fantasy books!

I have all sorts of people fooled into thinking that I am a patient person when in reality I'm not, although I'd like to think that I've learned patience through reading.
