I agree we often over analyze things :) Years ago a group I was in discussed Black Dog by Stephen Booth. Stephen was actually part of the group and so it was interesting to discuss his work with him there. Anyhow (this is not a spoiler) there is a scene in the book set on a farm and on the farm was a van with onions in the back. Well people waxed lyrical about the meaning of the onions - layers of secrets being unraveled, the stench of murder - stuff like that. In the end someone finally decided to let Stephen tell us why he picked onions to be in the van. The answer was he just liked onions!! LOL had to laugh - all this deep and meaningful interpretation and in the end the only reason was a favourite vegetable :)

I first read The Tree Of Man in Form Five in 1980 and was one of the few there who loved it. I followed that up with Voss which I also enjoyed immensely.

I love his quote: “She had begun to read in the beginning as a protection from the frightening and unpleasant things. She continued because, apart from the story, literature brought with it a kind of gentility for which she craved.” The Tree Of Man

Sally906 | 87 comments I have two books on the go at the moment - The One by Kiera Cass and O Little Town by Don Reid. I was planning on reading O Little Town for my Christmas challenge - but remembered I am leading a book discussion on it first week in December so need to get it read now. I am sure I can find another Christmassy book or ten for the challenge :)

Oh, I love that book! But I had to look up how to pronounce Aoife, because I couldn't stand the idea that I would be saying it wrong in my head for the whole book. It's said EE-FA, another one of those weird Irish names! Like Siobhan and Eoin.

Gerda, are you another cloggie?

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) I've finished A Place of Greater Safety by Hilary Mantel. The flow of the novel was interrupted by a ten day absence but still rate it as a 5★ novel.

I have Stormbird by Conn Iggulden, Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray and History of the Rain by Niall Williams lined up. Not sure which one I'll start next.

Good thing you can read about as much food as you like and not put on weight! Unless reading about it drives you into the kitchen to raid the pantry!!
