I'm glad you're enjoying it as much as I did :-) It really is completely engrossing, isn't it? Very close to the quality of Wolf Hall, I thought. I especially love Danton :-)

Marina Finlayson | 285 comments Have just started The Light Between Oceans. Beautiful writing. Am also partway through The Girl with All the Gifts, which had a really interesting set-up. Am now up to the part where everything starts to go pear-shaped.

(Why is that an expression? things "go pear-shaped"? What's wrong with the shape of pears? They don't look particularly disastrous to me ... Language is a funny thing, isn't it?)

message 11177: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 80002 comments Mod
LOL! They use the fruits to describe many things Marina - especially women!!

message 11178: by Marina (new)

Marina Finlayson | 285 comments True, Brenda, but I can at least see the reason why a woman might be said to be "pear-shaped"! But I just started wondering as I was typing why "going pear-shaped" means "going wrong". Where do these expressions come from?? I've used it plenty of times and never thought about why it means that before.

Maybe I need more sleep ...

Dana | 144 comments People I have had a woeful day.
I have just finished reading The Retribution of Mara Dyer
Which was released earlier this week. I was so very excited, making myself finish the mammoth Outlander before allowing myself to start it, (so there would be no distractions). I loved the first two books in the series rating both 5 stars, I was impossibly happy to start the third and final book in the Mara Dyer series. People it was a farce, I cannot understand why it is so.... I hate bad reviews, I belive essentially everything is good if seen through the right eyes, that most bad reviews are just because the book was not intended for the recipient. Why did I not like this book? 3 stars feels overly generous I am sad to say. Let us never speak of this again :(
