B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Finished Brightness Falls by Jay McInerney 3.75★

Picked up Heft by Liz Moore but was totally put off by the fact that the word 'and' was written as '&' throughout the book. Have set it aside to maybe try again later.

Started & Sons by David Gilbert.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) About 150 pages left on The Book Thief - hopefully will knock that off tonight if my roleplaying game group doesn't go too late :P

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) I don't think it's living up to the hype. Then again the hype was enormous.

It is good though.

Good lord, I wouldn't be able to stomach a book full of &s, either. Editing doesn't get much sloppier than that! What were they thinking?

I think that from the style of the novel, it was actually intentional that the 'and' read as '&'. But it didn't entice me to read the book, rather put me totally off it.

message 11566: by Neko (new)

Neko That would be a total off put to me...The only time I like seeing those & is in titles but never through out a novel.

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 452 comments I've just started The Rise of Enlightened Sexism: How Pop Culture Took Us from Girl Power to Girls Gone Wild. I have the edition with the pink boxing gloves on the cover; to me, pink boxing gloves symbolise the uneasiness our society displays towards women who display strength or power.

Last year, I re-read Susan J, Douglas' earlier book about the portrayal of women in popular culture, Where the Girls Are: Growing Up Female with the Mass Media and found, 20 years after its publication, that it is still fresh and relevant — and required reading in some university courses — so I'm looking forward to the sequel.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) I've finished & Sons by David Gilbert. 4★

Started We Are Not Ourselves by Matthew Thomas. A great story but finding the writing a little stilted.

message 11584: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) oooh, finished We Are Not Ourselves by Matthew Thomas. .

We Are Not Ourselves is called a saga; the story of a woman, her parents, her life, marriage, work and child. It has all the makings of a saga ranging from 1951 to 2011 but fails to make the grade in my opinion. This is mainly because it feels like Thomas does not emotionally connect with his story which then made it hard for me to connect. A real heart-breaker at the very end. But wow, the whole book was hampered by the unemotional tone of Thomas' writing. Dare I say in a female author’s hands this could have been better? Or a more experienced male author?

I think Thomas does show a lot of promise and will most likely improve with time and novels.

message 11593: by Adrian (new)

Adrian Deans (adriandeans) | 143 comments Doing some further research on my epic historical novel (almost finished), I picked up The Last Viking as it deals with some of my period and characters. It is written by a professor of history (I think) so valuable, you'd imagine, for useful facts. Be that as it may...a professor Berwick Coates may be, a writer he aint. This is the most appalling, colour-by-numbers rubbish. And yet it is published by Simon & Schuster, from whom you'd expect a bit of quality. Just dreadful, but makes me confident I can do a lot better.
