I'm glad you loved A Place of Greater Safety as much as I did, Bette :-) I really enjoyed Vanity Fair, too, thought it was quite audacious for its era. I have History of the Rain waiting to be read on my Kindle, would love to know what you think of it.

Kristen Cooper (kristenlcooper) I just read A Clockwork Orange for the first time. I found the language so engaging that I seem to have adopted it - my mind keeps saying that things are real horrorshow. Lucky it's just in my mind ;).

Angela - I read The Casual Vacancy a couple of month ago and was also surprised at much I enjoyed it! I was very impressed with this book and would recommend it to those looking for a new read.

Is this A Clockwork Orange the correct one Kristen? There are quite a few listed!

The Casual Vacancy

It was difficult for me to finally pick up actually because I'd seen some scathing reviews! I am glad others found it as well written and enjoyable as I did :o)

Sally Howes | 223 comments I recently read The Slow Regard of Silent Things, the new novella by one of my favourite authors, Patrick Rothfuss. I expected to love it, but I never expected to be quite so deeply moved by it as I was. This is a book for all the broken people - 5★s.

Here is my review:

It is sad isn't it? 94 is a good age though. I love her books - and haven't quite read all of them yet - so will be spedning time with her in the future.

Sally906 | 87 comments I finished O Little Town by Don Reid this morning - have given it 5 stars!

Review not done yet - but it was a very inspiring Christmas story, not sure why it has taken me a few Christmas seasons to get around to reading it. But so glad I did – is a wonderful feel-good story with a theme of forgiveness and new starts that is not rammed down your throat.

I am still reading After Darkness by Christine Piper which is set in an Australian prisioner of war camp in South Australia and related by a Japanese prisoner - totally different to my Christmas read!!!

Up next will be Meant To Be by Fiona McCallum but as I am reading this for the Summer Challenge i need to hold off for a couple of days!!!

message 11433: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) @Brenda Finished Stormbird last night. No review. I found the book to be vaguely unsatisfying. It has a long list of characters with lots of names I did not know. Iggulden doesn't specify which are real and which are fictional which is a huge shame. Quite a few gory descriptions of battle and torture which I could have done without. At very few intervals, he heads a chapter with a date specification so sometimes it's unclear just when things are happening. Overall, the book feels very much like a Fiction rather than Historical Faction.

I love Historians like Hilary Mantel and Alison Weir books on the subject much more than Iggulden.

MaryG2E (goodreadscommaryg2e) | 934 comments Currently reading The Christmas Quilt by Jennifer Chiaverini. Although it is not quite December yet, I need to move on from my November challenges. I am greatly enjoying this story, which has quite an easy prose style, plus some deep-and-meaningful ideas about life, love, family and forgiveness underlying the straightforward narrative about getting ready for a Christmas celebration.

message 11441: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments I'm currently reading In Falling Snow by Australian author Mary-Rose MacColl. I'm enjoying the fairly contemporary Brisbane setting (1970's, I think), with familiar landmarks and descriptions, and the WWI setting (mostly Royaumont, France) and descriptions of life at that time.

Also finished Paris, My Sweet: A Year in the City of Light by Amy Thomas which was a wonderful journey through the best dessert places in both Paris and New York.....all sounded soooo yum!
Now starting The Fault in Our Stars by John Green which I have been keen to read for a while!

Gypsy Hunted by Andrea Drew like the cover too.

*I'd started off reading a pre release version of this book which was still in need of some editing. I have since switched to a final edited version and am happy to say I'm enjoying it greatly. :)

Sally906 | 87 comments OK well the Christmas season has started and my reading is reflecting this - started today: Meant To Be by Fiona McCallum (my only Non-Christmas themed book - it is set just after Christmas though); Festive in Death J.D. Robb; Wolfsbane and Mistletoe by Charlaine Harris et al; and Candy Cane Murder by Joanne Fluke

That lot should keep me quiet for a day or two :)
