Oh yes! I LOVE Terry Pratchett! I've read and re-read nearly everything he's written. His Discworld books are probably my absolute favourites, and they only get better with re-reading.

Those are the ones I haven't read yet - I'm assuming you enjoyed The Long Earth? I'd saved Raising Steam until I finished the writing I needed to do. It's a bit of a treat :)

message 10810: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) I've started A King's Ransom by Sharon Kay Penman. It's the sequel to Lionheart and the story of Richard the Lionheart, 1157-1199. It begins in 1191 after his crusade to the Holy Land where he tried to win back Jerusalem from the Saladin of the Ottoman Empire. I really like Penman's writing; she deals in facts and add none of the histrionics some Hist Fict Authors pepper their novel with.

Kathryn | 3569 comments I'm reading The Forsyte Saga by John Galsworthy - it's a large book and the size was a little daunting, but I'm reading it with a friend, which is helpful, especially at the beginning - I found it a bit slow, but she was ahead of me and told me it got better! It did - and now I'm enjoying it. I've finished the first section and am looking forward to seeing where the story goes in the next!

I have very fond memories if that being made into a TV series when I was young and living in England. It was so popular everyone was watching it. Later I read the books and really enjoyed them.

Kathryn, you're making me reminisce again! Showing my age here, but I remember watching re-runs of the BBC series as a teenager in the 70s and then reading my Mum's collection of the books. It was probably the first epic series I ever read and I thought it was fabulous! Let us know how you enjoy the rest of the series :)

Phrynne and Carolyn - I haven't seen the series, although I knew it had been made into something like that, but sounds like it might be worth getting the DVDs out of the library after I finish. Although it looks like there's several versions - at least 2 - B&W and colour - my library only has the colour version...

NOT the one my library has - it's a 2002 version (I think) with Gina McKee as Irene. I might still watch it...sometime!!

I'm pretty sure the original was B/W (now that does me me feel ancient!) Not sure when it was made.

I looked it up. It was shown on BBC2 in 1967 and then again on BBC1 in 1968. 18 million people watched the final episode which was huge in those days! Okay Carolyn - if that's the one you watched too then we ARE old :)

Haha! It was definitely later than that when I saw re-runs on Aussie TV. My Mum and Gran had previously seen and loved the original series. They probably repeated it a few times. It was definitely the series with Susan Hampshire.

I was at boarding school in England when the series was first aired. It was compulsory watching on a Sunday night.

Oh wasn't he just - he was the most deliciously tortured man ever - brilliant actor. Soames wasn't his character called?

I read The Forsyte Sagamany years later and I 'saw' all of the TV characters as I read it :)

I have asked for Charlie Lovett's 3rd book The Bookman’s Tale by Charlie Lovett from my good friends at Text Publishing on the strength of this one.

message 10843: by Dale (new)

Dale Harcombe | 6884 comments Very much so Brenda and yes, Kathryn I often find it hard after reading a really good book or two to settle to another. It often induces several discards before I settle. One down so far, maybe two.

Neko Death by Sugar by Helen Goltz - Not the cover I've got for this book BUT I got a preview copy..So, yeah..changes happen...And it looks like the writers name has changed too (slightly).

I've almost read up to 80 pages while I waited for the washing machine to be done..FINALLY, a book I'm enjoying after a few blegh books. But oddly enough I'm not trying to read books to do with Italian's and it seems to be following me around..lol
