Misha | 2 comments Hi everyone, my name is Mike. I enjoy reading history for what it reveals to me about the development of human social conditions and morale over time in various cultures.
I especially enjoy the history, culture, language and literature of Slavic peoples. Russian literature is my favorite because of its deep richness and style from Pushkin to Tolstoy, Dostoevsky and Solzhenitsyn, among others. From the historical perspective I am deeply fascinated with the causes of the Soviet period and it's long term effects on the morale of that people and culture. I also enjoy biographies of political figures worldwide. I look forward to discussions with you all and getting to know you.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

Even though I studied English literature, I have a keen interest in historical non-fiction, particularly covering anything from late medieval monarchy, government and religion through to the decline of the British Empire. Joined the group in the hope I could find books that are recommended.

Heidi | 2 comments Hi, I'm Heidi from Seattle. I have loved history ever since I can remember, with my core interest being in WWII (and really wars in general). If I had to trace the beginning, it was probably a Time/Life book on WWII and photos of the horrors from the camps and the invasion of China. The idea that people could do such horrible things was something I felt like I needed to understand -- still trying to figure that out after all these years.

I majored in history at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, with a focus on 20th century American history. I'm a lawyer by trade, but my heart still lies in history books ...

Excited to have found this community!

It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books you mention should look:

Rod Jr. (rod_martin_jr) | 8 comments Hello. Rod Martin, Jr., here. Originally from Texas, then Oregon, Maryland, California and Arizona. And for the last 6+ years, I've lived in the Philippines with my wife.

Throughout most of my school years, I disliked history, but I found out in 11th grade that it was because of uninspired teachers. Mrs. Hendry changed all that. Sure, she still tested on dates, but her class gave real meaning to those dates. You see, she was more interested in motivation. It was like a door had opened in my mind. Of course! Suddenly, history had meaning in my life--deep and rich. I was hooked.

But I've been interested in other things, too. I've been a Hollywood artist, and a software engineer. I've been fascinated with religion and spirituality, digging for meaning there, too, finding the details that change confusion into clarity.

I've also been fascinated with Atlantis, Plato's lost island empire, finding in the literature clues that tend to prove its existence. I particularly like the translation of Sir Desmond Lee for Timaeus and Critius.

I've also found the work of R. Cedric Leonard on Atlantis to be thoughtful, wonderfully detailed and grounded in science.

In addition, I've been a lifelong amateur astronomer. With a father who worked in the space industry in the 60's, I've also been keenly interested in space exploration and hints in history that space travel may not be new.

The works of Edgar Cayce captured my interest at an early age, too.

Though this is not your standard source of history, I've discovered numerous items of corroboration. I love making such connections. Which reminds me of another favorite: James Burke's Connections and TV series.

Connections by James Burke by James Burke James Burke

I guess what defines my passion most is that I love these kinds of "connections." It's like finding clues that explain it all--motivations, connections, evidence, proof.

And I like reading works about the historical nature of religious texts, like the Bible or Bhagavad Gita.

The Bhagavad Gita by Anonymous by Anonymous (no photo)

Another of my favorite books on history is the Jared Diamond "thriller," Guns, Germs and Steel.

It's his insights into patterns and in stepping outside of the box to view those patterns from newer and newer perspectives that captivated me. Like realizing that the Incas could have crushed the Spaniards if it hadn't been for their awe.

And realizing that the 99% have far more power than the 1% behind 9/11 after reading Kevin Ryan's work.

Another Nineteen Investigating Legitimate 9/11 Suspects by Kevin Robert Ryan by Kevin Robert Ryan (no photo)

I feel like a kid in a candy store. Glad to be here.

Bryan Craig Welcome, Rod. Great introduction and you did perfect on the citation. You are an advanced citation student, lol. I will list this next paragraph just for clarification, but keep on doing what you are doing:

Robert Cormican (madcrowd) Hi Rod
Great to see your intro. Here in the UK, I must have missed James Burke's TV series that you mentioned. PBS has just arrived on Cable TV here which is great but it hasn't got round to feeding us programmes that originated from the UK. I'm going to find that book. Thanks for telling me about it from the Philippines.
cheers

Marcella | 2 comments Hello,
My name is Marcy, I'm Italian but i'm a resident of the Republic of Ireland. I love history because it is important to understand the past to comprehend the present and that's why I decided to study politics. I tend to read books regarding contemporary history, but I'm curious about other periods too.
