Wendy Fink | 3 comments Hello everyone, my name is Wendy. I feel a bit out of my element. I am just a preschool teacher. I've always loved history, but a trip to Italy ( Rome, Venice, Pompeii) a few years back, fueled my love for Renaissance and ancient Roman history. In truth, though, I enjoy any well- written history : fiction or non- fiction.

Bryan Craig Hi Wendy, glad you found us. We have a Renaissance topic:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

Eric Martell | 2 comments Hello everyone,

My name is Eric Martell and history/political science is my thing! I received a BA in History and Poli Sci from Potsdam State University in New York, and am currently enrolled as a PhD student at Albany University, in Albany NY for US History and International history. I am a US foreign relations and International Relations kind of guy, focusing on the polar dialectic of the Cold War. Additionally, I'm a historian of the 1960s specializing in the Kennedy administration. Lastly, I am greatly interested in reading Enlightenment thinkers/writers and exploring the history of political thought and theory.

I'm very excited to join this group and can't wait to jump in on discussions!

Apart from the language, I am also interested in Chinese history, literature and philosophy. Recently, I have taken up an interest in Roman history. This began with reading Barry Strauss' The Spartacus War. I have toyed with learning Latin and taking this interest more seriously. I'm afraid my interests are too scattered and the study of latin would perhaps interfere with my establish shotgun approach to ideas and reading. The Spartacus War

Quinn | 1 comments Hi, my name is Quinn. I am an American girl in 11th grade. I have limited history knowledge, but I joined this group to expand my understanding of the past and hope it will unveil some truths about the present and future. I have mostly become interested in history by listening to my US history classes and doing my own research. To be honest, I have usually read fiction novels, but I want to expand my horizons. I have read some historic fiction such as Pride and Prejudice, The Poisonwood Bible, Anna Karenina, Henry V and Hamlet. Actually, I am currently in the middle of a blog post on the Korean and Vietnam War to prepare for my history essay on Warfare in the 2nd Half of the 20th Century. I find writing (but usually not publishing) blog posts that summarize the event helpful for remembering the information. Anyway, sorry if I began to get a little off topic. I am very excited to become involved in this tight-knit group!

Best wishes,

Quinn

Eileen | 1 comments Hello folks,

My name is Eileen and I teach US History at the college level. I no longer work full-time but I find I like this simple life just fine. I live (frugally) in San Diego, California. One of my specialty areas is women's history, which is a rich field because A) so much of it was ignored for so long, that there is a lot to do, and B) it keeps changing and growing as we live it. I have studied Latin American history, too, and love mixing in literature with the historical literature. A good biography makes my day, if it is really about the historical context in which someone lived. I'm not a fan of the "great man" genre. I don't care about how rich people got rich. I can barely stomach stories of how politicians became politicians. But give me the times of their lives, and the interrelationships going on, and that book has my attention! Lately I've been reading some inspiring historical works by Kent Nerburn (he finished his Neither Wolf Nor Dog trilogy). Kent Nerburn

A GREAT book about the time is "Honor in the Dust: Theodore Roosevelt, War in the Philippines, and the Rise and Fall of America's Imperial Dream." It is by Gregg Jones. I read it in college in a US Foreign Relations class and found it fascinating. It details the human rights abuses and the conduct of the war by American soldiers and the McKinley and Roosevelt Presidencies. It is very highly recommended!

Tom (the_nude_monkey) | 1 comments Hi everyone!

My name is Tom. I'm from Belgium and I studied journalism. I'm currently unemployed but I'll be starting an internship in a movie-production company soon.

There are two passions in my life: stories and history. I think both are related. No writer, storyteller, director, etc. can ever come up with stories that are so diverse, amazing and spectacular as the history of the human race. That's why I love history: a never ending resource for small and big stories.

I'm interested in quite a lot of time periods but if I have to choose one, it's definitely the long 16th century. So from about the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella to the end of the eighty years' war or even the end of the war of the Spanish succession.

Gage Backman | 1 comments Hello, my name is Gage Backman, and I am from the United States. I am interested in World History, so I have a wide array of interest for learning about any culture. There are two main reasons why I love history. One, I like the narrative history brings to our world. I like to make connections and figure out how the modern world has been shaped by past events. Also, I am always fascinated when I read about two separate cultures coming into contact with each other. I wonder what influence, if any, they had on each other, and what their initial thoughts were when meeting each other. I am excited with what The History Book Club has to offer, and I hope to learn a lot from the group.

Born and raised in the U.S. but moved with my wife and son to Medellin, Colombia last year to live. I work out of my home office as an investment analyst. I've always loved learning about history as a hobby and am excited about the interactions here. Don't really have a preference for a particular era, anything after maybe 3000 BC.

Am hoping that most of the books are available in pdf or kindle since I won't have access to hard copies.

Anyway, thanks and look forward to talking.

Bryan Craig Hello Joseph. I hope you are enjoying your time in Columbia. It must a great opportunity to immerse yourself in another culture.

This is how a book should look:

The Passage of Power (The Years of Lyndon Johnson, #4) by Robert A. Caro by Robert A. Caro Robert A. Caro

Neil H | 1 comments Hey everyone!

My name is Neil (from Illinois) and I have a book problem. Mainly, I buy enough to fill a shelf before opening a single one of them and never managing to keep up.

While I prefer a few main genres (sci-fi, horror and history), I can't say that I prefer one any more than the other.

I originally went to college to be a history teacher, but as life often provides us, I found a fork in the road and after two and a half years of study for that, I changed my path.

My main interests are Civil War history, WWII history, the history of America (in terms of businesses, architecture, etc) and finally general world history.

I'm looking forward to getting some new doors opened up in terms of books to read and subjects to learn!

Alejandro Triana | 2 comments Hi, thanks for accepting me in this group. I am Alejandro a Colombian attorney passionate for history and visual communication. I am impressed on how preColumbian ceramics from my country have similarities in styles and iconography with other ancient cultures like the Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Indian, which makes me wonder if there was contacts between eurasians and precolumbians before this continent was baptized the new world...I was also imprssed with the book "1491 New revelations of the Americas before Columbus"

Best wishes,

Alejandro Triana

Hello my name is Leigh and I am a corporate lawyer in Calgary, Canada. My passion for history is fairly broad ranging from the Spanish Armada, the history of mountaineering in the Himalayas, the foundation and evolution of MI5, with an initial passion for the extraordinary tragedies of WWI and WWII (the truth is stranger than fiction). I read enough during the day, but find I can always get lost in so many great books.
