Robert Cormican (madcrowd) Hi everyone. I'm a Brit living in Yorkshire. History really does inform the present, and also my other reading passion, science fiction. I am just collecting visions of the usually dystopian future. My specialist history area is 1876 and I am eating up books about events around the world in that one year.
Impressionism The Painters and Paintings by Bernard Denvir Bernard Denvir I couldn't find an image of Bernard but thought I would take a moment to familiarize myself with the buttons!! I hope it works.
Happy Mayday Bank Holiday weekend or Cinco de Mayo or similar excuse for smiling.

Jill H. (bucs1960) A warm welcome, Divya. We have many members from Pakistan and India. You have so many areas of interest, all of which you will find here in the History Book Club. But let me start you with Ancient History at the link below.

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how a book should look:

Berlin Diary The Journal of a Foreign Correspondent 1934-41 by William L. Shirer by William L. Shirer William L. Shirer

Take a few moments to read the orientation:

Robert Cormican (madcrowd) First, good luck to John and his growing family: due on Tuesday means 'any time now'.
Second, Thanks for the lovely welcomes from Kathy, Jill, Bryan & Bentley. It really does make for a different and better online experience. I didn't expect that. I think I will return to these pages and marvel at the range of interests.
Third, Kathy, do you remember "Marathon Man" the film where Larry Olivier extracts "Is it safe" from Dustin Hoffman's teeth? In the book version, by William Goldman (highly recommended as a thriller) Hoffman's character is a social historian and talks about the year Custer "got creamed" and the first phone call was made. He called it a great image for America, and I think it is a great image for history: the old world fighting against the new and although winning for a moment …… Funnily Goldman called the year 1875 in the book but it was in fact 1876. Now I collect books and newspapers from 1876, read biographies and tales that pass through that year. I think I will be wandering through a few different History Book Club threads.
And lastly, let me try that citation again with the book I just recommended …
Marathon Man by William Goldman by William Goldman William Goldman

Lucia Hi Everyone,

My name is Lucia. I love all things historical, especially military and war history. My grandfather was a WW2 veteran and bookstore owner and his love of war history sparked my passion for it. I'm studying International Affairs and find it necessary to expand my knowledge through all historical eras in order to try to understand state relationships and current conflicts. I recently took a class about Cold War and post-Cold War history, which is a focus I want to expand on. I especially found certain guerilla movements interesting, such as those of Mao Zedong and Che Guevara.

The Battle of the Wilderness May 5-6, 1864 by Gordon C. Rhea by Gordon C. Rhea Gordon C. Rhea
