Hello, I am Robin, 66, a retired government attorney. I read books primarily on American history with an emphasis on the Civil War era. I also read in the areas of American philosophy and literature. I think many Americans, myself included, have devalued our country over the years, particularly those of us who lived through the 1960s. I study American culture to correct this devaluation in my own mind and to help others.

Hello and welcome, Robert. You are among history lovers here. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

Hi my name is Doug Ostrander and recently discovered the "group section" of GoodReads. In the beginning of my participation in GoodReads, I was using GoodReads merely to track my reading. I soon discovered that there is so much more to GoodReads that needs to be explored. In compliance with the rules of the History Group, I would like to introduce myself. I am a retired state trooper and have developed a passion for history. Like so many of us in our youth, we never appreciated the study of history. As I grew older I developed a keen interest in learning what really took place in the events we have heard so much about. The subject of history was no longer viewed as merely a complication of facts and dates that one memorizes. The unraveling of the truth in my study of history only continues to fascinate me. I look forward to discussing many of the books with the members of the Group who have the same interest and who are will inning to share their ideas.
Hi! I am Abhinav from India. I am doing my senior year in my Masters (Engineering). I am a big fan of Human Psychology and Behaviour. That's why I love to read about History and Culture as they tell a lot about the behaviour of the people in the past. I believe Human Development in all fields is possible only when we know about our past as it helps us choose the most apt path.Looking forward to learn a lot from this group.
Cheers,
Abhinav
Morning,My name is Mahogany Woods. I was indifferent to the subject of history in school; however, I stumbled across a few history books that totally changed my perspective. At this point, I am entranced with Black American history. Also, I enjoy historical facts about religion. I will appreciate any recommendations!

Hello, my name is Kathy, I live in New Jersey, USA. I work at a casino in the call center as a trainer and quality coach. My job has me talking and interacting with people most of my day so reading for me is an escape from the noise of my daily life. For me there is nothing better than a good book to help quiet my mind and relax. This works well until like most of you I am sure, you find that one book you just can't put down. Then I find myself reading into the wee hours of the night. I am part of a local book club which consists of teachers from my local area. As a women's group we tend to read books that are varied but mostly of interest to women. Though I love my book club and have enjoyed reading books selected by the group, when left on my own I always reach for a history lesson. I love to read about true events in history but I also enjoy historical fiction. Phillippa Gregory is one of my favorite authors of historical fiction.
I just read a book, Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks that I recommend to anyone interested in historical fiction. This was one of those books that I just could not put down until the end and then I wanted it to continue. I wanted to stay with the characters and learn more about there lives. The story is based on true events that happened in 1600 England during an outbreak of plaque in a village called Eyam. Fascinating reading.
Thank you for reading my ramblings. I look forward to seeing sharing our love of history.

Hello all. My name is Taylor. I live in Seattle. I've always had a passion for history, although did not pursuit a formal education in the subject. Hi ... my name is Dave, I live in Blacksburg, VA (hence the "Hokie" nickname). I took interest in history in the 70s when my 6th grade social studies teacher filled our minds with the threat of nuclear war with the Soviet Union. It prompted me to ask myself: why? All roads led to World War II, which has been my passion for over 30 years (the only video games I ever play are even WWII-related). While contemporary history is my preference, my wife's education and professional background has opened my eyes to other historical arenas. The simple reason why I enjoy history so much is that it covers things that really happened.
A warm welcome Dave. There are many topics here on WWII and I will start you with one at the link below:https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

Hello Everyone! My name is Eugene I am 43 years old and I work in corporate accounting, history always been one of my favorite subjects, however, growing up behind iron curtain American History is something I would like to learn more about. Since almost finishing Robert Caro's Path To Power I am looking for more Presidential bios with a little edge to them, with historical settings behind the presidency, I will be jumping on McCullough's John Adams next. I would greatly appreciate group members suggestions to where my readings should take me.
Sincerely,
Eugene.

Hello,My name is Carol and I live in California. My interest in history is somewhat wide ranging, but I've been particularly absorbed in Russian/Soviet, British, and modern Chinese history in the past. I tend to focus on a period/event, and then read a lot about it to try to understand it from different perspectives. Recently I've been reading some great books about WWII and the Cold War, and just finished "Operation Paperclip", an astounding story. I'm very excited to join the discussions and read others' observations and thoughts.

Lately I've been working my way through the Gilded Age/WW I/New Deal gap between those wars. Looking forward to finding recommendations for these topics and more.

I eventually want to work in a museum as a curator or archivist. I love the idea of helping to keep someone's story alive.
Thank you for allowing me to join! I can't wait to dive in on all the fun! :)
Hi there. My name is Ayman Elmasry, I live in Cairo, Egypt. I'm interested in books that study the long term impact of historical events and conditions, that can develop throughout the ages to be the decisive elements of recent events; the "black box" if you will. This description applies to some extent to: "Europe: A History" by Norman davies.
Also i'm into civilisation, and prosperity of nations thing; "Why the west rules for now", "why nations fail"... etc.
I'm not sure if there are any people from Cairo here, but I would love to meet any of them if they are willing to sit down and discuss one of similar books as the above.
Happy to have joined this group, and excited to participate.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.
When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.
