Jill H. (bucs1960) Welcome to the place for the history lover, Mary D. To get you started, let me give you a link to one of your favorite topics at our Civil War link.

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how the book you mentioned should look:

The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd by Sue Monk Kidd Sue Monk Kidd

Jonny Greetings, all. I'm Jonathan. I live presently in Washington, DC. but have lived previously in Europe and the Middle East. I enjoy reading history and historical fiction, in particular stories of a biographical nature - Machiavelli, Tallyrand, Sforza, Musashi, Cleopatra, and Franklin are a few favorite eminent lives.

A book I've read more than once:

The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon

Thank you for having me in the group,

Hello James - We are glad that you like to read a lot of books about European history and the Great British empire but we do not especially appreciate folks making comments out of the blue that are derogatory without some sort of back up, citations or rational discourse. We encourage civil and respectful discourse and we welcome you but want you to understand our rules and guidelines. We have reposted your post minus the segment which violates our rules. I should've put my opinion of Mohandas Ghandi: Ghandi was worshipped like a god across India but he was more like a anti-christ, he used non-violence to cause violence. I know he's historically significant but i think he caused more harm than good.

Thank you for your explanation James. Only realize that there are many folks who feel differently and when you introduce yourself with an attack on a figure who is an icon to some - it is best to temper your remarks and place them in the appropriate discussion thread versus the introduction thread which is the first place we get to know a little bit about you. I am sure that you do not want to be defined by your feelings about Gandhi one way or the other. This thread is really only for introductions. But again welcome.

Bill Reitter | 1 comments Hi, everyone, I'm Bill Reitter from Glassboro, New Jersey, USA and am married and retired. After studying philosophy and psychology I became a tour operator and bus driver. This gave me plenty of time to read during wait times. Radical history, along with science and poetry, became one of my passions. Some of my favorite authors are Howard Zinn, Barbara Ehrenreich, Noam Chomsky, Susan Jacoby, Jared Diamond and Chris Hedges...to name just a few. I am a Green Party official and serve on the communications and social media committee. As a Green, I work for social justice, environmental wisdom, grassroots democracy, and peace on earth.

As a secular humanist, I trust in people power, art, science, compassion and hope. Life is an exciting and adventurous journey of discovery. I can not afford to travel, so books are my window on the world and my path to new insights and understandings about people and planet. I may be older, at age 74, but am still young at heart, and open to new ideas, inventions and opportunities.

The inside of our house looks like a library with book shelves in almost every room. Sometimes I visit prisons to give my books away to inmates who do not have any. I am a conscientious objector to all wars, especially aggressive wars of occupation for greed and profit. So, naturally, the history of war and peace is of great interest to me.

I am looking forward to learning and sharing with all the history buffs and scholars out there. "If we fail to learn the lessons of history, we are doomed to repeat its folly"...this would be a great tragedy. But if we achieve greater understanding and wisdom from studying the past we may be able to chart a course to survive and thrive.

Hi everyone!

My name is Albert Mulles and currently I work as department head for the International Linkages Center for Saint Paul School of Business and Law located in the Philippines. I love to read social history and military history because of the conventional wisdom associated with understanding our past. ..... I lost many good friends and neighbors during that time...and it inspired me .....about it lest humanity forget the "strongest typhoon ever to make landfall in the history of mankind."

Jonathan | 1 comments Hello. My name is Jonathan Baum, and I love to read history books of all sorts, but especially military history. I don't have a specific era or topic that monopolizes my attention, but I prefer serious and somewhat academic history over books with lots of illustrations - although I admit that they are useful for topics like fortifications or ship design. I also enjoy biographies, especially of military or political leaders, and books about science. I am currently reading Beans, Bullets And Black Oil by Worrall R. Carter, to give you an example of where my taste runs. Beans Bullets and Black Oil by Worrall Reed Carter

Nick Wyckoff | 3 comments Hello,

My name is Nick Wyckoff, I'm an aerospace engineer that is focused mostly on the space science and defense industries. My preferred historical reading primarily focused on military history since an understanding of that topic helps me with work.

I prefer "topics" over specific authors and I tend to read things in clusters. My most recent study has been on maneuver warfare and has stretched from Roman times to Vietnam covering a wide range of tactics.

I do have a weakness for the first person narrative, so when I do decide to write a review it's usually for a book like that.

I am José Luís and I am a Portuguese high school student who is fascinated by History (in fact I love all subjects but I have a special relationship with this field of study). I like all History topics but my favourite eras are Antiquity (with an emphasis in the classical civilizations and Late Antiquity), the Middle Ages [I love specially the western kingdoms and Byzantium (although I hate that name as it’s a bit ugly for me and in fact they were the late remnants of the Roman Empire, but that’s a topic for discussions in other threads) and the early modern period. I hope you will like me and that we will have fruitful discussions!

Celine Hello, my name is Celine and I am a nursing student in Canada. My primal reason for joining this group is to expand my knowledge regarding historical events by learning from fellow members and their recommended books. As of now, I am interested in learning about the Roman and Babylonian times. Because I do not actively learn history in school and do prefer non-fiction to fiction, I will be glad to be a participant of this group!

Jill H. (bucs1960) A warm welcome, Celine. Let me get you acquainted with the club by providing a link to our Ancient History thread.

This is how a book should look:

lys (silvabism) | 1 comments Hello!
My name's Lys, I'm 20 and I study philology in Moscow. I want to find out as more about history as I can. It's not a strong side of mine, so I'll appreciate all the recommendations, especially about the history of Europe and about the Second World War. I also would like to know more about european dynasties, so, that is.
Happy to join you,

Best wishes,
Lys

Tim LaVoie (tlavoie) | 1 comments Hello! I'm excited to be part of this group and hope to receive and give some great recommendations as well as take part in discussions. I love reading about most periods and historical events, but my main areas of interest are Stalinist-era Soviet Union, U.S. Presidential history, and Afghanistan. I work as an appellate criminal defense attorney in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - but history is my first love. Thanks for including me!

Bryan Craig Hi Tim. I was born in Gibsonia, and lived in Erie, so it is good to see a Pittsburgh-er in the group.

We have a topic on Stalin:

Julie Hendrix | 3 comments Hi, I'm Julie and I'm a paralegal and law student. I love history, and for now, am especially interested in reading legal-related historical works. I also enjoy biographies and autobiographies of women, as it seems like there are so many interesting females throughout history, but we often see less about them, versus men, overall.

Keri Hello all! My name Keri. I live in the United States. I absolutely love history and always have. I am even two classes away from a bachelor's degree in History. I have many reasons for why I love and study history but the biggest one is that I like stories and history provides me with the story of the world.
