Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I am reading The Cuckoo's Calling (Cormoran Strike, #1) by Robert Galbraith which I love. It is so well written and crafted. I love how Rowling writes characters.

I am supposed to be listening to these this week for challenges and I have to absolutely be done by the end of the week -- so it will be a busy week for me:

14 by Peter Clines Fate's Edge (The Edge, #3) by Ilona Andrews

Stacia, Kay, Angie, Leea -- and whomever else -- when should we read Covet by Tracey Garvis-Graves ?

That audio was so good that it put me in a listening slump. Since then, I haven't been able to listen to anything! I've started like 10 audios, listen for an hour or two and then lose interest.

What do you think of Cormoran, Regina? I found him very appealing (view spoiler)

message 2403: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I can imagine. The book is so rich. Rowling always manages to completely submerge me into her world.

I'm going away this weekend. Any time after that works for me.

That's crazy!!! Do you watch the True Blood Show? I like where it's going this season with Sookie.

message 2407: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments I'm reading Under a Texas Sky by Dorothy Garlock and it's well written. I love the concept of this silent film actress and Ann's backstory but for some reason i'm just not compelled to read it... Must be my mood or being busy.

What about starting it after we read Tell the Wolves I'm Home, maybe Sunday Aug. 4th?

message 2409: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments August 4th works for me.

message 2410: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I finished Time Between Us (Time Between Us, #1) by Tamara Ireland Stone . I didn't like it as much as Stacia did but it was cute and fun.

I also finished Two Alone by Sandra Brown which was ok but didn't thrill me. I like the whole survival aspect but that was about it for me with this book.

That was the other thing about DEA - thank you for putting words to it, Regina. I loved the earlier books in the Sookie series but their content started to decline but I stayed in denial for awhile. I'm glad that I only bought the pbs and not invested in getting all the audiobooks, just 2 of them.

Yes, Leea, I watch Trueblood. It's easier now to watch since the Sookie books are done - I can quit comparing. I used to get so mad when the show veered SO much from the books where the only thing they had in common was the characters' names - the ones that are actually in the books LOL.

message 2412: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments I used to get mad too, but I stopped reading at book 10 or 11, the characters just changed and it really pissed me off. So I decided to keep then as they we're in my head. HA! Thanks Lisa for filling me in on DEA. I appreciate it, because i'll never read it.

Kay, Great!!

I think the show veered off b/c they have better writers and they saw how downhill the Sookie written series went!

I might have to wait until the 5th because I'll be trying to squeeze in the Sinners book before publication, but I can catch up.

message 2417: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Sounds like a plan. We can put it off to later too as it isn't out until late September.

message 2418: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Back from my quick Shakespeare/theatre weekend... trying to catch up!

Leea - cute little guys!

Ian, you've got me interested in Libriomancer Libriomancer (Magic Ex Libris, #1) by Jim C. Hines so I put it on my TBR list. BTW, use that without a comma and which with a comma: "I just started a book, which I think might be...." versus "I just started a book thatI think might be..." But that's the editor in me. As far as modern editors go, there's not a difference between which and that in terms of persons or inanimate objects - at least not anymore.

Stacia, glad you liked the 1st Elemental Mysteries book. IMO, book 1 set up the other books in the series, which I enjoyed more and rated higher than book 1.

Has anyone seen Shooting Scars (The Artists Trilogy, #2) by Karina Halle on Netgalley yet? Karina Halle said it would be there, but either I'm not putting the right search criteria, or it's not there yet.

HEY! I got Wicked Beat (Sinners on Tour, #4) by Olivia Cunning by Olivia Cunning - the next Sinners book... who's reading it when? Maybe we can buddy read?

Woot...I love it when people give me rules I can follow! Libriomancer is pretty good fun...a bit of info-dumping but it's such an interesting idea that I'm not minding it at all.

BTW...ever noticed my excessive use of ellipses? Does the editor in you find that annoying?

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Lori, I was going to read Wicked Beat sometime around the 3, I think.

So much has changed with books. I was taught in school to never use a comma after the word because, and to never start a sentence with the word and. Yet, it's done all the time now, so I just do it.

Commas are my downfall. I use them everywhere. I had dueling teachers in school. When I was younger, I was taught to put a comma anywhere you'd naturally pause while speaking. In college, I was taught that I was using commas at least 75% more than I truly needed to be. So many sentences don't need to be broken up with commas, and a good portion of the time you don't need one after words like and and but, but I use them anyway.

I was taught to use commas when you would normally pause when speaking, too. And I prefer it when books I read are written that way. It seems more authentic.

I remember in seventh grade we were taught NEVER to start a sentence with 'and,' and when we read a story where the author did, I asked my teacher why it was OK for her to do it. LOL She said it was because she was a professional writer. My outlook from then on was that if she could do it, so could I!

message 2423: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I was told to never start a sentence with "but". I asked an English teacher why and she thought it was just easier for teachers to tell young students to not do it than tell them to not do it excessively.

Leea | 1437 comments I'm loving Under a Texas Sky by Dorothy Garlock , it's very different but the characters are so layered. I'm loving the idea of this film crew coming to this barely making it small town in Texas. The author's writing reminds me of Lorraine Heath. I can't wait to see how this all ends.

So many good books to read in the coming days :)

i'm a little tempted Lisa, but i've refrained. hehe

message 2433: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Me too domino. This was the only time I appreciated the recap too.

Harris writes the worst sex scenes. So awkward. I gave it 3 stars - which is more than I gave the past few books. Basically Harris tied everything up with a bow and even gave explanations to readers as to why certain things would never work (eg Sookie could never work with Alcide because ..:...).

I just started the audio of Fate's Edge (The Edge, #3) by Ilona Andrews and I am liking it. It is the same narrator as for the troubleshooter series.

the best parts about the show for me are Lafayette. he's been pretty stable through out the show. i'm not so keen on Warlow. plus i would've liked for Sookie to stay with Eric for a while. and the whole Billith spin was kookie to me at first, but now i'm interested to see how it plays out.

I agree, Regina, about C.Harris writing the worse sex scenes. Except for that one shower scene (view spoiler). A fluke? Did someone else write it for Harris?

LOL Lisa I think you are right! I bet she didn't write it.

I can't wait to read your all reviews (ugh -- is that a left over from reading sookie?) on Magic Rises? I can't start it this week.

I didn't love the first two in the Edge series. I liked them, but not love -- but I am really liking this one. Maybe Ilona Andrews somehow works magic with the third in her series? :D

message 2439: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments @Domino - Love Lafayette also! And Jessica, and Jason - those are my favs on the show. The thing between Sookie and Warlow is feeling weird to me. And why was I focusing on Warlow's mismatched nipples is disturbing to me (one's inverted). They both act like they're on Valium or something. Is it just me?

message 2440: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I think Lafayette is a perfect example of what Harris didn't realize that she had.

I can't start Magic Rises yet because I pre-ordered it from amazon in pb form because that's the form I have all Ilona Andrews books and they MUST match! Ocd, much? Plus, I need to reread Magic Slays to jog some brain cells.
