Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments I have been thinking hard and long about my fears. Just talking about them makes them already irrational. I am not even sure if they are classed as phobias (and I actually read a list of those at one stage for a competition lol). I fear to be left out. I used to be the last to leave, I don't handle well when people whisper, I can sit in a room reading and still following the conversations (I might miss something). I really try to train myself to tune out and sometimes I am pretty successful with it. I don't have a fear of heights but a fear of falling. As long as there is a rail that prevents me from falling I can actually look down from great heights but I still get the dizziness and the falling forward feeling. Another fear is to loose house or the roof above my head. Whether its the physical threat like fire (we called 000 (911/112) straight away when I thought it was burning underneath the cupboards) or the financial one (I panic when we are late with mortgage payments), I get restless, aggro and panicy and my hubby has to deal with me yelling and screaming. I know, I sound like a loony and yes, people have mentioned that I should seek professional help. But you should know that when it counts I usually keep a cool head and deal with the problems without having any hissy fits.

New question: mental case with big heart!

New Question: What season finale was the most shocking for you, out of your favorite shows this season?

message 353: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments I would have to say personally it has been equal parts Vamp Diaries, Scandal and even Being Human. Some real jaw dropping what will they do now? Situations for sure.

New Question: If you could have a love scene with 1 and only 1 romance hero, who would it be?

message 354: by Manuela (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments As in me and my fictional boyfriend?
At the moment it still would be Darling Cruel.

message 355: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (last edited May 19, 2013 10:18PM) (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Exactly Manuela. And at this point I would have to say I wouldn't be opposed to a love scene with Donovan Caine from the Elemental Assassin series. He is a really great dudley do right character lol.

New Question: Have you ever lived in a state or country that has ever made one of the best state or country to live in list? If so, do you agree with why it is the best? Or do you have your own reasons why it is the best or worst place to live?

message 356: by Manuela (last edited May 20, 2013 02:25AM) (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments Did California make it on the list? Then I have, for 4 months in one hit and on several occasions later to visit. :)

Isn't that what every state or country thinks of itself???

message 357: by Valerie (last edited May 20, 2013 11:29AM) (new)

Valerie (rie10) | 166 comments Sorry to say no; I am in Michigan. I know there are many, many nice places, espeically in the UP. However I don't think it is that bad. I know MI has been up there, Detroit tends to be all that people think of. Sure they had some pretty corrup goverment issues, but most major cities do. For themost part is very nice, the view to canada is great..no matter where you live in the state, you are no more than a 2-3 hour drive to a lake. And it is so easy to go across the border. Besides, Detroit is the offical Hockeytown after all. How can you beat Hockeytown?

message 358: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments So with summer heating up around these parts. And many a talented individual is trying out on various singing, dancing, and well in general talent shows. So with that said. The new question of the day is have you ever really called in, texted or whatever else to cast your vote on your favorites?

message 359: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments Yes I do. I'm an avid fan of So You Think You Can Dance. Been watching since the 2nd season and it just started its 10th season YAY. I love showing support to my favorite dancers on the show and continue to even after they leave. I use to watch Americas Best Dance Crew but got bored with that after 2nd season. Those are the only shows I've texted/called in for. I'm very into anything dance and learning about different forms so thats why I support SYTYCD so much. I love what they've done for dance culture

message 360: by Manuela (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments I did once, in a finale in Germany, but apart from that I don't watch those shows anymore. Too much repetition, not enough time, rather read a good book.

message 361: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (rie10) | 166 comments Nope! Never voted for any of them. Usually don't watch the shows either. I am not a huge fan of reality shows (or whatever they are considered if not that). I will admit to tuning into Bachelor or Bachelorette after the first few episodes to watch the beginning for the awsome scenery shots of wherever they travelfor like 5 min. I think i did vote in one of the various award shows quite a few years back, but that is it.

message 362: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (studioeastrat) | 571 comments I watch the Voice and I used to watch the Sing-off before it was canceled. I don't usually vote through. I am not a huge fan of reality tv but I feel like these shows are more contests for talent rather than "reality".

message 363: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1747 comments Only for my Mom

message 364: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments I actually like watching the competition shows. But doing the calling in or texting in has never been my thing. Besides I like finding out who is America's favorites and see if they differ with my own choices. Which is usually the case with So you think you can Dance, lol.

New Question: What qualities in a book make it a book that would last throughout the ages for you? Memorable characters? Epic story lines? Enriching drama or the steamist couples? Speak on it.

message 365: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments So far since I've been hitting a bit of a rough patch with characters and even plot execution in most books. I would definitely have to say what would make a book last throughout the ages for me is one with memorable characters that make you feel. But they aren't the type to be neurotically over the top or even obsessively focused on such unimportant aspects of the story. The plot would even have to be something with plenty of thought provoking twists and even if it doesn't have a happy ending. It's really got to make you feel like it was a well thought out ending and not just one that is wrapped in a bow and super tidy. But one that does connects the dots and makes you feel like it was a ending that befits what the story was about and not just rushed ran out of time solution. And if it is a romance I definitely want to feel the passion with the couple. It's one thing to say the couple is great for each other and they are so hot for one another. But sometimes it's great to really see it in motion.

New Question: What book did you lose your romance story virginity to?

message 366: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (rie10) | 166 comments Since i missed yesterday...for me it is more the storyline and characters. Some have good storylines, but the characters do not play well togther.

As for Today's question...hmm. I was never really into Romance stories. And since i have been an avid reader for so long.. probably Flowers in the Attic (and the rest of the series). My Mom had read them and I kept bugging her to let me read them. I think it was around 6th or 7th grade (or so) when she finally let me. yes, that is more horror/suspense/thriller but there was some romance too.

message 367: by McGee Magoo (new)

McGee Magoo My high school had a few Harlequin presents... old 70's stuff and I THINK that it was either Anne Mather's Medici Lover or AM's Leopard in the Snow. Been hooked on love ever since.

message 368: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1747 comments Carolina Moon, lol. It's what made me become an obsessive reader, haha.

message 369: by Latoya (new)

Latoya | 13 comments The book that did it for me was The Promise by Danielle Steele.
Our school system is a bit different, we have forms not grades. I became a reader around age 11 with Nancy Drew series. I moved on to Sweet Dreams stories by Form 2 - age 14. But I became an avid reader at 15 with Steele. I read most of her early books after that. Thank god those covers were decent.
I remember, I got a scolding about the books I was reading, when my mom saw a cover with a couple in 'a passionate embrace'. That was a three hour lecture. But anyway, "The Promise" was it.

message 370: by Manuela (last edited May 24, 2013 04:23PM) (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments Old Question: - sorry I do appologize if I am not always answer straight away but I am an internet addict and I try to wean myself off (or at least cut down the hours significantly) and sometimes I need to get my head around and think about it before I write something. -

A book needs to take me somewhere. It doesn't need to have a philosophical meaning, I don't want to learn something new (though that seems to be a side effect anyway) and I overlook writing style and the odd mistake (in grammar, wording, even in logical things) if it is not repeated or too many. I want to open the first page and be sucked in into a world and life of someone else and forget about my own sorry lot for a while. A good book is for me one, that I cannot put it down (even forget to eat) till I am at the HEA part. It is good if I get agro if someone tries to approach me, it is good when I extend my lunch break by 15 min just to finish that chapter. A good book is when it talks to me emotionally. I like to laugh, I do cry, I like to punch the heroine when she does stupid things and want to hug the hero because he does love her even more for it (although he rolls his eyes and shakes his head at her antics).
I read probably tens of thousends of books in my short life, some of them short, some of them massive; the ones I still can remember (to a certain degree - I would have to re-read them for details - ) are of the quality I was writing about above.
I love good characters and a story, I love witty and funny but I also dig for drama, torture (emotional and physical) and fate, to see how my beloved protagonists overcome the obstacles.

New question. I have no idea. When I was a kid I used to read animal stories - mainly horses - and I thought that was kind of a love story as well (in a very innocent and unsexual way). I know when I was a teen I started reading moms love novelletes (would classify as M&B, harlequin or similar - just in German) but I would categorize them in about 4 or 5 categories.
1. woman and man don't like each other, get forced to stick together and change their minds.
2. woman and man hit it off, but circumstances seperate them, she has a child she keeps away from him, he finds out, comes after her, they get back together again.
3. woman is poor, man is rich, society doesn't accept, they get together anyway.
4. woman has been hurt in previous relationship, man has to overcome her defences.
5. man has been hurt in previous relationship, woman worms herself into his life and he falls for her.

Defy Not the Heart (Shefford's Knights, #1) by Johanna Lindsey that's the first English love romance I bought in LA in 1987. I bought it because I loved the pic of Fabio and the blurb on the back. Hello steamy :D

message 371: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Great choices ladies. I'm with some of you as well on the first romance you've tried out being a Harlequin romance tale. Perfect Chance (Harlequin Presents, No 1826) by Amanda Carpenter
Hey wasn't Flowers in the Attic by V.C. Andrews? That sounds really familiar. I think I by passed the movie a time or two before.

I won't even go there about Fabio on romance covers, Manuela lol.

New Question of the day: What was your first job? Did you enjoy it? Was it something you chose for yourself or did your parents say you had to get out there and find another source of responsibility?

message 372: by Manuela (last edited May 24, 2013 11:23PM) (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments I did work for a week or two in the library in year 9 or 10 as "work experience" class. I did like the job of the library assistant (putting books back on shelves, scanning them, working with them), didn't like the librarian's job (but better pay) of catalogueing, administrative work, etc.
Then in year 12 I did age care in the facility my mom and dad worked in. I financed my travels with that.
After that I was in my apprenticeship/traineeship for Industrial sales clerk and have worked since then for regular pay.

Why won't you go there Dhfan? He was goodlooking then, a hunk and pretty famous (which I didn't know as it was my first book and I had no idea what a massive industry lies behind book covers). I thought he was someone's figment of imagination. Laugh

message 373: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments I won't go there about Fabio, Manuela cause you like him. But frankly when I first saw Fabio being depicted on a romance cover as a representative of a Comanche Indian Warrior with all that blonde hair. I thought it was the most cheesiest thing I had ever seen. And didn't think the romance people could be serious cause it was so obvious he was meant for the viking or pirate covers. But to be a Indian character? That was pushing it for me.

Sounds like you have had a well rounded experience in working in many different arenas like that Manuela. I've only ever do two internships. Health care center and working at the local United Way. Both doing some office stuff and playing go for of sorts for peeps in the office. Wasn't paying but at least built up my office know how to say the least.

New Question: Have you ever heard about/attended a book festival before? If so was it one of these or more of a local one in your area?

http://popcornreads.com/ereaders/summ...

message 374: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Haven't heard of any of those reading festivals personally. But I actually think they would be pretty interesting. Do they have something like them where you are Manuela? I meant to ask you that before in the original question.

New Question: What do your four legged, or feathered friends/family members look like? Or in other words share pics of your pets current and former if you have them.

message 375: by Manuela (last edited May 27, 2013 03:55AM) (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments Dhfan4life wrote: "I won't go there about Fabio, Manuela cause you like him. But frankly when I first saw Fabio being depicted on a romance cover as a representative of a Comanche Indian Warrior with all that blonde ..."

Well, it's not Fabios fault that the cover designer did a bad job. Skin tanning and hair dyeing should be easy on paper. But I understand that you thought it a bit off (unless he was an orphan or a kidnapped white male who lived with the tribe). That's why I hardly pay attention to descriptions of characters, I am tempted to look at the cover and get very disappointed.
I did a few things but not that much. I prefer to stay in a job but I had to figure out first what I wanted to do. Salesperson sounds more exiting than it actually is. It is not my dream job but I liked it and I was good in it. Now I have been working for about 7 years as data entry clerk. It pays the bills.
Never heard of book festivals before (the link is blocked by my internet protection). Book sales, yeah, but festivals? Not that I know of.
Fluser 9.5.1994-20.11.2012
new cat (stray), no name yet

message 376: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (last edited May 27, 2013 09:52PM) (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments True it's not Fabio's fault. Just I think his agent should have talked him out of doing particular covers that in my opinion seemed meant for another race of model.
That is good too on finding out what you wanted to do on the job front. My thing is knowing what I want to do. But not being in a place that has the best opportunities to achieve those goals that easily.
Pretty cool cats you have there Manuela. I'm still sorry for your loss on Fluser. That second one looks like a cookies'n'creme or cow. Lol my cousin had a friend that had a cat with similar markings and named her the same thing. Kind of a hoot.
The book festivals are like book fairs but kind of a national scale and more of an event. More like meeting and greeting authors and such.

Here's my little shit-starter Gracie:

description

I'll have to get my other one of my previous dog Duchess who was very much a lady in her mannerisms at times lol.

New Question: Just saw Magic Mike this weekend. And had me curious who has actually been to a male revue show before or even a regular strip club? Or if you haven't gone before, what are your views on strippers? Male or female.

message 377: by Manuela (last edited May 27, 2013 09:53PM) (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments Love little Gracie, she looks cute. You too, by the way (in a totally platonic way!!!). Hubby and I think of >Jasper<, but he is not listening yet. Have to hang some flyers around the area to find out if he belongs to someone, otherwise we'll adopt him. :)

New Question: What is one thing your parents never taught you about life?

message 381: by Manuela (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments laugh, what did they teach me?

message 382: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Haha, I'm with you on that one Manuela. But will totally be nice and say most importantly the family recipes that I've always wanted to learn.

New Question: When was the last time you gave a book 5 stars and it wasn't because it was by your favorite author?

message 384: by Jessica (last edited May 30, 2013 07:43AM) (new)

message 385: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Would have to say that the last book I rated that was a 5 star and wasn't by my fave author was Of Noble Birth by Brenda Novak really surprised me how good it was. Definitely a recommend for historical romance lovers.

New Question:

What is something new you have learned this week?

message 386: by Manuela (last edited May 31, 2013 03:06AM) (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments You should have asked this question earlier in may that's when I learned how to use (some html is ok) hahahaha.
This week? I learned that I can want as much as I like but I will still not start work earlier than I have to. (I am late, again! with the magazine for our German Club, aaaarrrggghhh). I learned that stray cats are very smart, they stay indoors when it is pissing outside (as in raining cats and dogs), me on the other hand has nothing better to do than to drive and run around in that weather.

message 387: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments I would have to say that what I have learned new is that I definitely have to have a sensual and closer intimacy connection between my male characters in a male/male story. Normally I was hot for just the two guys going at it in a story. But after finishing Ward's version of m/m interactions I definitely learned I needed more. And that is totally new for me as I normally did not care too much about that sort of thing.

New Question of the day- If you could relive one moment in your life and change one thing about that moment. What would it be and what would you change if you could?

message 388: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Simple. Would have to say in the short term I would have loved to have relived when I was gaming and saved the progress I made and quit sooner. But as I didn't have to re-do it all. lol.

New Question- When was the last time you visited your local library? For a reading event? Book discussion? Q &A with a local author or whatever other event that your library has held.

message 389: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments Today. I picked up several books and hung out in periodicals. I'm usually at the library a few times a week.

message 390: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments oh you mean for an event.... I think it was for the spring reading program kickoff carnival

message 391: by Manuela (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments Sorry I don't go to their events, they usually happen during daytime and I am full time employed, so I lack out on it :( but I usually go once a week at least to drop off and pick up books, I am friendly chatting with some of the librarians and one of the security guys, it is kind of my social outing LOL.

message 392: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1747 comments i've never been. the library by me doesn't really have much for events. its mostly just a few things for little kids.

message 393: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Oh I was just meaning going to the library in general either to check out books or attend events and what not. Could have been for any activities really. Last time I've personally been was when I went to the end of the year book sale/giveaway they had in Dec.

New Question- Did you have a high school sweetheart growing up? Or was there ever a particular one that got away and you wished you had a chance to get them back?

message 394: by Manuela (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments I guess my first boyfriend was the one that got away. But he was also the only one with two chances. I am still in contact with a few of my ex boyfriends but since I moved around the world it is only through the internet.

message 395: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1747 comments i don't consider any of the guys i dated back then to be a high school sweetheart. no one really stands out until the 20s hit.

message 396: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments No high school sweethearts here for me either. One that got a way of sorts. But full life ahead for other opportunities.

New Question- Have you ever or would you ever ride a mechanical bull?

message 397: by Manuela (last edited Jun 04, 2013 05:18AM) (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments I haven't but I'd really like to, but I guess I have to be in the states for that and very - and I mean very - drunk to do so. Makes one more relaxed (when drunk) and less accident (breaking bones) prone. ;)

message 398: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1747 comments never have and only would if i ever got the urge to do it, lol

message 399: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments I'm with you Jennifer, I've never had the urge to be a mechanical bull. And I don't think being drunk would really help me all that much lol. I'd likely still go flying off the thing even on a slow setting.

New Question- If it were possible for any of the supernatural/paranormal characters we have read about in the PNR/UF series to exist in our current world we live in. How do you think you would handle being around them? For instance if you had a vampire for a neighbor? Your kids (if you have any) going to school with little ghoul kids? Co-workers that are werewolves or even if your mail man was a zombie?

message 400: by Manuela (new)
