Dhfan4life | 10411 comments New Question: What do you think of SK's pick for Ash in the upcoming TV series? (posted in the movie/tv series news thread)

message 252: by Manuela (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments Didn't she write in one description that Ash looked so young and soft? I always have a babyface in my head when I think of Ash. Maybe that's why he is more a brother to me than the hot male I picture in my bed ;) Any guy who looks young and has acting abilities could probably pull it off. I mean hair can be grown and died, beards can be grown and shaved off, clothes can be worn and discarded, does he look good out of clothes? Everyone has a different picture of Ash in their head, so how to please all?
I always thought that Tom Cruise is a terrible actor (and I still believe he is) but he pulled off something, that everyone said he couldn't. He played Lestat in IwaV. I think that was his best acting. I believed him to be Lestat.
So whoever will be Ash, give him a chance to show.
If you think you read that somewhere else, you are right I just copied it from there. ;)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments "Old Question: What is one of the most surprisingly good reads you have thus far and would you recommend it?"
No one seamed to answer to this one and I am sorry that I didn't reply straight away but I was busy with other stuff. the most surprising good read I had was Protection by S.A. Reid . I stumbled over it at amazon and I couldn't stop when I started reading it.

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Old question: Would have to say the most surprisingly good book for me was Luminous by Dawn Metcalf I loved the cover right off. But I thought the story would be something kind of light and not as philosophical as it was. But after learning other wise it was still pretty amazing a read. Fast paced and really got me thinking outside of the box.

I've shared my thoughts already on the actor for Ash in the other thread. But will add much success to him and the other actors that undertake this acting endeavor.

New Question: What is the best thing about the spring for you?

message 255: by Manuela (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments We had the first day today that felt like autumn, rain all day, and very windy. Hope this continues to a degree till winter and all through winter so that the water reservoirs can be refilled and the lawns watered without using precious drinking water. Therefore I am not really looking forward to spring in about six months apart from that it brings me closer to christmas and me and hubby (hopefully) going home to Germany for a visit. I will keep you posted.

message 256: by Manuela (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments Luminous by Dawn Metcalf this book is definitively not something for someone who suffers from Lepidopterophobia. Like the cover but the summery didn't make me want to read it. It's a beautiful face though.

message 257: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments That's interesting you say that Manuela on the season front. Technically where I am, we are in Spring but it has totally been feeling like Fall for sure in a major way with all this rain. I hope your drinking water and reservoirs aren't affected in a bad way either. I've only ever heard about most areas having troubles with that on TV. Can only imagine how trying that is.

The cover aside, the book is a really great take on forgiveness, being able to finally being free to move on and have a full life even if you have suffered both spiritually and medically.

message 258: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (rie10) | 166 comments If we had spring it would be great. Bit I am in Michigan (in the States) and we had a nice 70-something day (w/storms) followed by a day with high of 40's and snow. That aside the longer daylight hours are the best part. Tends to help with motivation and grief emotions.

message 259: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments We're in the 50's and 60's in the day and in Ohio here myself. And 20's and 30's at night. But in a weird way this is our version of having spring lol. Add in some surprisingly hot days and some raining too it is all over the place.

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments New Question: If you had one hour left to live. What is one of the biggest secrets you would confess to and to whom would you be so honest?

message 261: by Manuela (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments Well, if it is a secret, I won't tell you. LOL

NO, I am not telling!!!

message 262: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (rie10) | 166 comments Hmm...I honestly cant think of any secret that i would tell. And if i would tell anyone, it would have been my other half but he went before me so..... No big secret to tell anyone. (small pidly crap, sure but who cares?)

Liz Barrons-Kattalakis-Quiakides-Tehrror | 351 comments I just don't have a secret to tell either...how boring am I ...lol

message 264: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Yes, I have a secret....I'm really a man *cue dramatic soap operatic music* lol kidding. I'm boring that way too no secrets here either really.

New Question: What are you doing tomorrow?

message 265: by Dark Fairy (new)

Dark Fairy (dark_fairy) | 47 comments I don't have big secrets. I'm part of the boring people club.

Tomorrow I have to audit two restaurants and three fast food outlets in the morning and in the afternoon I have to give a biochemistry class. After that I get together with a friend with whom I have a photography project. Tomorrow is a pretty busy day.

Liz Barrons-Kattalakis-Quiakides-Tehrror | 351 comments Laundry... :( Lots of it!!!!!

message 267: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (rie10) | 166 comments Working of course. After that possibly a hair cut(trim), home to do dinner, read or watch some tv.. The usual boring stuff.

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments New Question: Were you named after someone in your family or is there a interesting story associated with how your parents picked your name?

message 269: by Arianne (new)

Arianne (biatchwithwifi) | 127 comments Among the three sisters, I'm the only one who has two names. I was middle named after my dad's auntie. She passed away a day before I was born.
When I asked about my first name, Arianne, my parents told me that since my star sign was aries, they named me arian but added another N and an E to make it more feminine.

message 270: by Manuela (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments That is beautiful, Arianne. I went to work on the 24th, today we had ANZAC day (public holiday) and I read a book and went for a walk with friends and their dogs. Tomorrow I will read another book and will go for another walk.
I have only one name and when I asked my mom about it she said it was a name that she and dad were of the same mind and liked it. My brothers have double names and my oldest brother has my dads name as middle name and my dad used to have my granddads and great granddads names as middle names.

message 271: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (rie10) | 166 comments I know my first name was the name of one of my Dad's ex-girlfirends and both my parents liked the name. Yes, it is probably the oddest story on how to get a name and makes me laugh most times. No idea on my middle name.

I also know my younger sister's name came from Annette Funicello. They both liked here and i have seen all the Frankie & Annette movies becuase of them. No clue on my older sister.

message 272: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Great stories ladies. Although I would have to be honest and say your mom is a very mature woman to be cool with naming you after one of your dad's exes Valerie. Most women would have a fit and I'd be one of them lol. Even though I know the relationship is long since over with. I still wouldn't want a name reflective of my guy's past on our child's future if that makes sense.

As for my story it's short and simple. My mom was in love with ginger ale and Cher around the time she was preggars with me and thought it would make a great combo of a name. Hence Cherale. Creative but still wished she and my dad shopped around for other regular names at times. The number of eyerolls I get cause someone that isn't in my family or a friend thinks my folks were being the typical black parents and were being "creative and unique" with my name. And don't even try to pronounce it as correctly as they would for someone else. But I forge onward.

New Question: Have you ever tried any glueten free foods and if so what have you thought about them?

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments New Question: What is the worst customer service you've ever received?

message 274: by Manuela (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments just last week I called Telstra Australia, ended up in their call centre, the guy who was answering seemed to be from an Eastern European country, he tells me that he has to put me on hold saying he has to calculate things but does not put me on hold, just the receiver down. I can hear him in the background typing, talking to someone else, laughing. After 20 minutes I hang up, call again, make a complaint and deal finally with someone (he had an American accent) who can actually help me sort my shit out. Thank God for people who know actually what they are doing!

message 275: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Old questions:

Have tried some gluten free soup before. And it was better than I thought it would be. But I was totally hungry after having it.

I've also had the worst customer service lately with one of my fave erotica publishing companies, Ellorascave. As a friend of mine bought me a book last month from them as a belated bday gift. And it took them the longest time to get back to me in regards to what happened and even more so when they did it took them longer to figure out if the email was lost. And then once they figured out what happened in the paper back department I wasn't even contacted back about things getting straightened out and when the book would be shipped out. I just by chance looked out the door to get the mail this past Friday and it was just sitting there on the porch. Thankfully though I kept my composure and sent them a email back and thanked them for their help with finding out what happened. I really hope they get better about their online customer service. As I seriously love their books.

New Question: How many of your GR friends do you really talk to on a regular basis?

message 276: by Manuela (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments including you, Louise and Lily maybe three or four?!?!?!

message 277: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments I think aside from you lovely ladies and like a few other peeps I know in other groups. I would have to say roughly I have 8 or so peeps I talk to regularly in my friends list.

New Question:

What's your favorite way to shop? Online where you can buy quick and get all the great online discounts, from catalogs where you can spread out your payments and still get the item sooner and try it out before you fully pay it off, or direct buy from a store, where you can go in and pick it up and take it with you same day.

message 278: by Manuela (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments OMG, omg omg omg... I just asked exactly the same question in either/or thread... hahahahahahaha

I am usually a store person, I like to get into contact with the sales people, get some feedback or info on the product and be able to share my experience but I found that some stuff is cheaper online or just not available anymore in stores... so sometimes money talks.

message 279: by Arianne (new)

Arianne (biatchwithwifi) | 127 comments it depends. if it's shoes or clothes, I prefer to shop in stores. it's a physical activity that I enjoy. if it's accessories, electronics and other whatnots I buy some of them online

message 280: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (rie10) | 166 comments Well great minds... As noted on either/or it depends on what i am looking for. In most cases, I look online for pricing and that somewhat determines how i buy things. Some things I can only find online. Books are a mix of both. Clothes...99.5% have to go to the actual store. The joy of womens clothing not being sized uniformly. Why can't we have standard pants sizes like the men? Why is size 16 in one brand the same as a size 20 in another?

message 281: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments I would have to say I love shopping in the physical stores for sure for clothes and shoes. Just gotta try that stuff on before buying for me. But lately shopping online for books, my video games, and the occasional necessary part for the computer is growing on me. Particularly when there is free shipping and they cut the prices for most of my games down to half the price at most stores if you buy it online vs. in the store. So definitely love that aspect.

New Question: Reading guides, Yay or nay?

message 282: by Manuela (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments Yeah, always wanted to know what they are?!?!

message 283: by Arianne (new)

Arianne (biatchwithwifi) | 127 comments are we talking about cliff notes?

message 284: by Arianne (new)

Arianne (biatchwithwifi) | 127 comments are talking about cliffsnotes?

message 285: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (rie10) | 166 comments Nay... to whatever they are (something you follow while reading that directs you?? Cliff nots definatly not for pleasure books). Now, if it is related to a class maybe. Otherwise I would read the book and maybe consider the guide after i was done and go back to see if i see it differently as a result of the guide.

message 286: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Oh no sorry about the misinterpretation. Meant the reading guides that are posted at the ending of most books. They usually are provided by the author and can be followed along as you read as Valerie said or can answer them after you have finished reading them. But I believe they are mostly used by reading clubs or groups that read regularly to help guide discussions.

But nope not cliff notes at all. Just usually questions that ask the readers of a particular book what they thought about a particular character's actions in the books. Thoughts over if they would do the same thing in that situation or engage chat about other stuff in the book. Like for example in the book I just finished Between Friends by Kristy Kiernan there is a point when one of the main character's makes a choice not to tell her husband about their daughter's becoming sexually active. Do to the couple having some marital issues and some parenting disagreements where the daughter was concerned. And so one of the reading guide questions was talking about if the reader thought it was appropriate for the mom to do something like that. And what would you do in a similar position. So yea just something to get you to see the characters and even the story in another way.

message 287: by Manuela (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments Ah, yeah I have come across a book or two that had those in it at the end, but no, don't read those, am not in school anymore and most of the time I am pressed to read the next book. If I like a book, 4 stars or more, I usually keep it in the back of my head to re-read it eventually. I prefer to find out if the book is a series, where in the series it is (usually somewhere in the middle or the end) and then I have to start finding the previous or following books to read. A lucky star showed me Lover mine (BDB by J.R. Ward) first. That is the first series that I read from front to back, hahahahha.

message 288: by Manuela (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments Hey, can I ask a question?

Have you guys the moment when you start reading a book and after the first sentence you realise you have read that book before?
I have that with the one I am reading right now, but I only started last year with goodreads so it was listed as to read but I am to 99,9% sure that I have read it before...

message 289: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Hasn't personally happened to me Manuela, reading the same book twice. But in other groups I'm a part of some people have said that has been the case for them. Particularly when the cover is changed or re-released under a different publisher.

message 290: by Dark Fairy (last edited May 01, 2013 12:35PM) (new)

Dark Fairy (dark_fairy) | 47 comments Has happened to me,with novels that I had read a long time ago. I started to read them and suddenly I had a deja vu. I look between my old book and and there were!

message 291: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (rie10) | 166 comments That has happened to me but it was a book i read a REALLY long time ago. Once it was just the fact i had the book on Kindle and forgot i had read it till i started reading the paperback. Wasted money!

And with the clarification, i have no books that have that in them and don't do book clubs cuz I like to read whatever i am in the mood for at my pace. Haven't done school since I finally finished colleage a while ago.

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments New Question: Have you ever been a member of the girl or boy scouts? Or an associated group growing up as a child? Or ever volunteered in a group like that as an adult?

message 293: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (studioeastrat) | 571 comments I was a girl scout for a couple years but then got involved in theater and dropped out of girl scouts. It wasn't really for me anyway. Never been really fond of being outdoors.

message 294: by Manuela (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments I was a "Jungpionier" (translated Young pioneer) in East Germany before we moved to West Germany. We used to collect papers and glasses to bring to the recycling, we gathered in groups and walked in parades on public holidays, we were organized with a monthly (I believe) meeting and we had usually at least one Russian pen pal. Mine was Olga. I still have some of her letters but I cannot read Russian anymore. LOL

message 295: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (rie10) | 166 comments I did the girl scouts for a year or two. Wasn't really for me since I was not a 'girly-girl' and that is what they were at the time. The camping was fun. I also did ROTC in high school for 3 years. LOVED that! Would have joined but i was not able to get through boot camp (chronic condition that made it nearly imppossible for me to run, jump, etc). Was part of Drill Team and the Color Guard; we did lots of stuff for school and fundraisers. I probably learned more from some of that stuff than school itself.

message 296: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Oh that is cool Manuela and Valerie. I've only ever been in a mini after school sort of girl scout program way back in middle school. My mom was a scout leader of sorts. And we played different games about trust and stuff. Beyond that never had much time for such programs as my dad's work schedule was kind of all over the place and with my mom being sick most times too when I was younger. Pretty much just did school and home.

New Question: What do you think is the best thing about being a reader is?

message 297: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (rie10) | 166 comments At times, the escape from the real world. Most of the time, just enjoying the adventures that are unique to the way i read and 'see' the events happening. We all have our own idea of what a character looks like, acts like, etc. Its the little things that are not written that you see w/o thinking or realize that you are doing that. Being able to be totally lost in the story and see it as you read it. Can't beat that for relaxation as well as working your brain.

Liz Barrons-Kattalakis-Quiakides-Tehrror | 351 comments Dhfan4life wrote: What do you think is the best thing about being a reader is?

To live/experience someone else s life for a bit. To feel what the characters feel..is an incredible journey to me...a great escape!!!!!

message 299: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Great answers ladies. I too love being a reader for the free escape into someone else's life/world. I also love being a reader because although I may not have experienced some of the things that the characters have experienced, I still like trying to learn something from those situations. Because it gets me to thinking about what I might do in such a situation if it were to happen to me. And I also enjoy being a reader cause it is one of the best activities I can do solo that don't take a whole lot of work. :D

New Question: Has a book turned movie, ever been filmed in your town or near where you work?

I totally agree with your answer, Valerie, I am so the same...

In my hometown in Duisburg, Germany they filmed a James Bond movie once, we had a police series that was made in this town, another police series was filmed in our harbour (this all in Duisburg), then another Bond movie filmed a place and called it after my birth place (but I guess that does not count). LOL
