Nina | 6069 comments I was able to acess your book shelf. I hadn't read "Noah's Compass" but I think I'd like it according to your review. Maybe I'll try it someday. I have such a list of To Be Read and what I must read for the book club and what friends have recommended tht I might never read it. You might be in the same boat. We are supposed to have "your" weather this weekend; zero temps and snow.rain/sleet on Saturday and Sunday. Brrrr. You know the feeling.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Yes, Nina, I'll never read all the books on my to-read shelf. Good luck with the weather this weekend!

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I think this is our last day of super cold for a while. It was 9 this morning & isn't supposed to hit freezing again, but it's supposed to warm up tomorrow. Marg said that next week we're supposed to get 4" - 6" of rain in a few days. That will mean flooding since the ground is frozen & there's still a lot of snow to wash away. Then we're going to be neck deep in mud.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, I'm not looking forward to the "melting" period. Too much ice and snow to melt. That means lots of water going who-knows-where! As William Bendix used to say on the old comedy radio show, "The Life of Riley": "What a revoltin' development THIS is"!

message 1305: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I remember that quote.

message 1306: by Nina (last edited Mar 02, 2015 04:52PM) (new)

Nina | 6069 comments This quote kind of sums it up: "Winter lies too long in country towns, hangs on until it is shabby and old, and sullen." willa Cather

Nina, it hits the nail right on the head.

I corrected my typing error/Hangs on rather then hands on..Sorry.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We're getting our melting day tomorrow, but they've changed the forecast. It will be almost 40 in the morning when it starts raining. They're not sure how much we'll get, but it could be a couple of inches which will then turn to around 6" of snow or ice. More or less, but it looks like a lot of precipitation of some sort & we're still pretty well covered by snow & ice. They're expecting a lot of flooding.

It melted yesterday & today some, although we never made it out of the 30's. Walking out in the fields is tough for everyone, practically impossible for a human. Deep mud to ice in inches. I put my heel on a block of ice, slipped & stepped on to snow with my sock because the mud was so deep. Ugh.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Sounds awful, Jim. We expect some snow on Tuesday (tomorrow). Then for Tuesday night it says: "Snow and sleet before 1am, then freezing rain and sleet." Nice. :-( http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick....

Nina | 6069 comments We are headed for better temps by the weekend and hopefully they will travel your way soon after.

I hope so, Nina!

message 1313: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Thanks, Nina. I sure hope so. Not much melting going on this morning. It was cold & raw, just barely above freezing until lunch. Seems to be warming up now, but the rain is really coming down.

message 1314: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Just started snowing as we were headed out to the dentist this morning. Not too slick but a bit scarey and OUCH. Found out I have an infection in the nerver beneath one of my teeth so I have to have it pulled and perhaps surgery to get rid of the infection. No fun.

message 1315: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Yuck. Good luck, Nina. Bet it hurts, too.
:(

We're still getting rain at 4pm. It's 34 degrees. That's super because Marg should get home in 30 minutes or so with the bus. No ice or snow on her run.

message 1316: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Tonight they predicted snow and ice in Louisville. Hope they are mistaken.

message 1317: by Werner (new)

Werner Nina, so sorry to hear about your tooth! Hope you're not in too much discomfort, and that they can get the problem fixed quickly.

message 1318: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We got about 1.5" of rain today, 1/2" of sleet/ice, & now I think we have almost 5" of snow. It only turned to snow about 5 hours ago (6pm). It's supposed to keep this up until 8 tomorrow morning.

message 1319: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The rain yesterday melted almost all of the remaining snow, just a few piles remained, but the ground was still pretty frozen so there was a lot of flooding. This morning, the back deck has over 13" on it where it didn't drift & it's still snowing. We've been getting almost an inch per hour all night & are supposed to for another couple of hours.

I had to dig out the back so the dogs could use their dog door. The electric flickered once while I was talking to Mom, but otherwise has been steady, thankfully. It's 16 degrees out, so I'm going to have to walk out to the barn & plug in the tractor else it won't start. I had some sort of bug yesterday & came home early. I feel better today, but really don't want to face all this snow & wind. Brrr.

message 1320: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Here are some pics of the snow & animals.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, those snow scenes look familiar! So do the pics of the dogs looking out the door. I have a similar pic of our dogs. They love to look out the windows.

Nina, hope your dental problem won't last long.

message 1322: by Werner (new)

Werner We're in the midst of a serious ice/snow storm here as well. Bluefield College and the public schools are closed.

message 1323: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Take care, Werner. At least you have the day off! :)

message 1324: by Werner (new)

Werner Will do, Joy. (Yes, I'm glad for the reprieve --I wasn't looking forward to the trip to the campus and back!)

message 1325: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) This snow is a MESS. It's sitting on MUD!!! Over a foot of heavy, easily packed snow, & yet it's sitting on inches of mud. I had trouble going downhill in spots in the field with tire chains on my tractor since I don't have 4WD. The snow & mud made chocks on the front tires until I was plowing grooves. I was actually happy when I hit an icy patch. I got the lane cleared, but it's a mess, too.
:(

message 1326: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Good pictures of the animals looking out. At least some good comes from all that snow. One picture reminds me of my stay one winter in the French Alps. My grandkids would walk up on the roof and sled down off it..

message 1327: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Take care of yourself Jim or the animals will have to take care of themselves.

message 1328: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Werner, hope the weather pattern in the next few days improves for you.

message 1329: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I hope everything improves for EVERYBODY!

message 1330: by Werner (new)

Werner Thanks, Nina and Joy!

Nina | 6069 comments I'm known as the crazy weather person. ON our our lawn at the end of the driveway is a small mound of snow. There are other traces around our block. Not warm enough to melt yet/but wait, they are predicting 80 degrees next week so we'll just have to wait and see.

message 1332: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, we have LARGE mounds of snow all over! It will be a long time melting! Enjoy your 80 degrees. That's incredible!

message 1333: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) 80! Wow. We're supposed to get into the 50's & have some rain coming mid week, so our piles of snow will be gone quickly. The sun was shining & the ground isn't frozen, so they were melting yesterday even though we never got above freezing.

The temps around here have varied an amazing amount. In Frankfort, it got down to -7 yesterday morning. It was 6 degrees here when I left the house at 5am. While the temperature often drops a few degrees in the last couple of hours before dawn, it sure wasn't going down 13 degrees. It's one time it's nice being 450' higher. Down in the valleys, the cold is really settling in. That's part of what makes it so tough for the school system here. The back roads & twisty hollows of the northern half of the county often have very different road conditions from the city & southern half.

message 1334: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It was 10 degrees here around 7:30 AM. It's supposed to go up to 30F today. The other day it went to above 40F allowing some much needed melting.

message 1335: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments This seems a good quote in regards to the weather:

"Winter is on my head but eternal spring is in my heart," Victor Hugo

message 1336: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) If he was here, he'd have to add mud on his feet. I added some pics to the album (see #1320) I took today. We took a ride, the snow is melting, & the neighbor's garage roof caved in. That's a real mess.
:(

message 1337: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Good quote, Nina.

Thanks for the pics, Jim. That's a lot of snow! I see you included the mud too. Looks horrendous!

message 1338: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I took the picture of Marg over my shoulder without looking at the camera. I can't believe it, but I got 3 good ones like that. Only a few were bad & a few iffy ones.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Good shots!

message 1340: by Nina (last edited Mar 08, 2015 12:41PM) (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I saw my first robin today. The birds are singing and I could take a walk with only a sweater on but still looks like winter as there are no green leaves or green grass/only still brown.

message 1341: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Hints of spring!

message 1342: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Even hints are welcome but shouldn't complain;except for some very cold temps it's been nothing like yours Joy, Jim or Werner.

message 1343: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We've had robins around all winter, sometimes in large flocks. About a month ago they dropped by to strip the last of the crab apples off.

I added some more pictures to that album. The snow is melting fast. Big difference just from this morning. I found some daffodils poking up, too!!!

message 1344: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Daffodils! Music to my ears! Our temps were above freezing today. But we still have plenty of snow and ice to melt.

message 1345: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments No daffodils here yet. I think they really announce spring is on the way. They always remind me of the movie, "Dr. Ziavago." I probably spelled that wrong. I remember the scene when the wagon they are travelling in is almost to the village and then there they are/acress of daffodills while Lara's theme is playing in the background.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments About those daffodils... when I was in fifth grade we had to memorize the following poem:
===================================
"I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud"
(By William Wordsworth)

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
===========================================
ABOVE IS FROM: http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/...

I think I still have the fifth grade notebook in which I copied the poem in my own handwriting.
Ah, memories!

PS-I'm dancing with the daffodils! :)

message 1347: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I have always loved that poem so when I stayed once at my friend's flat in Oxford, I took a bus ride to Wordsworth's cottage and had tea and sticky pudding in the little dining room and looked outside at the host of daffies. Oh to be in England now that Spring is here and I was.. thanks Joy for posting this as it brings back good memories to me also.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments That's a beautiful memory, Nina!

message 1349: by Nina (last edited Mar 09, 2015 04:24PM) (new)

Nina | 6069 comments The other nice memory connected with it is that it was raining rather hard when the bus reached the end of it's route but the driver turned and said to me, "It's raining love so how about if I just drive you up to the gate? Don't get off yet." And he did.
