I can't imagine how they're surviving! I don't even want to think about it.

Nina | 6069 comments We were lucky to have sprinkled in our very cold winter days, some warm ones but it is hard to keep up our bodies with all the drastic changes. We really feel the cold. Yet, like you said, Jim and Joy and Werner, we're not in Boston. Or lamentely not in CA where the jonquils are blooming in my friend's yard in Redding.

message 1253: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Good news! The guys from the bus garage came by to put some additive into the bus & plowed the lane while they were here!!! Yay!!!! I did not want to spend another 2 hours in this weather on the tractor. Too cold! Now I don't have to. They salted the lane, too. I guess they're planning to have school tomorrow even though the temps are supposed to be way below when the kids need to be picked up.

message 1254: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, the schools should make some exceptions and keep the schools closed. The poor kids shouldn't have to be waiting for a bus in the morning in this cold weather!

message 1255: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Here we have schools cancelled at the least provocation.

message 1256: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) School has been cancelled for tomorrow. It's down to 8 degrees already. We might get down to -10 tonight!

message 1257: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Join the club, Jim! lol

message 1258: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I don't want to join a cold club with the north! Whaaaa!
;)

message 1259: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Feb 18, 2015 07:37PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments We should all run away to Florida for the rest of the winter! lol

message 1260: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Even they're supposed to drop into the 30's, aren't they? Looks like we need to head for the equator!

message 1261: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Equator, here I come! It's snowing here!

message 1262: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments How about San Diego/in the seventies? My son, his daughter and her five brothers live there besides my three great grandchildren. Lucky them.

message 1263: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It was -5 when I left the house this morning, so it probably dropped another couple of degrees by dawn. Yuck! Far too cold. Tonight is supposed to be colder.

message 1264: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Will we ever see the 70s temps again?

message 1265: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy and Jim and Werner, how is your weather by now? We are going to have forty degrees this afternoon then cold front moving in with snow/ice predicted for this evening and cold staying for the next three or four days. Very cold but not below zero so far.

message 1266: by Werner (new)

Werner Nina, in our area we haven't had significant snow for a couple of days, but it's still bitter cold (12 degrees just now, according to the Weather Channel), so there's no significant melting either. Bluefield College has been closed since Sunday night (except for an attempt to open on Wednesday, two hours late; they wound up closing at 2:00 p.m.), and the public schools have been closed since Thursday, Feb. 12. We're under a winter ice storm warning beginning at midnight tonight.

message 1267: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Can you believe spring is a month from tomorrow?

message 1268: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We started out at -9 here this morning (-19 just south of us in Lexington), but it's warmed up & it's 16 now. It's supposed to get somewhat warmer, but we have snow, sleet, &/or ice moving in. We could get a foot of snow or an inch of ice through the day tomorrow, but they're guessing that we'll get 4" - 8" of snow mixed with yuck. The high might be 34 tomorrow.

That will be the high for another week. After that, we're supposed to be pretty much in the 20's all next week until the weekend when we get another mixed blast. This is the winter that just keeps on giving. Come on spring!!!

message 1269: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments They're predicting snow here again and it's still frigid out. I guess we're all very tired of this terrible weather. All we can do is wait for it to end.

message 1270: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We've got another inch of snow & 1/4" of ice. It was 31.8 when I finally got up. I woke up several times as sleet pelted the house. Yucky day.

message 1271: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, how are your animals doing... the horses and goats?

message 1272: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) They're all fine, Joy. The horses were bouncing around in this mess. The goats are staying in their house. They hate the rain. We're above freezing now, so the ice on the trees has melted. It's drizzling now, but occasionally switches to snow. The ground is still frozen & we haven't had any more accumulation, although it's odd to see it snowing hard with water running out of the downspouts.

It's supposed to get down into the mid 20's tonight, so I'm leaving all the snow. At least it might give us some traction or cushion against the ice that will form tonight. Tomorrow might get above freezing briefly. I sure hope so. The foot of snow we had is down to a few inches & is a dense slop. The roads are a pile of slush.

message 1273: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Slush is a mess. Last night we had a short ice storm. The driveway was sheer ice and slippery so I walked under iceladen branches and finally got the birds fed and the paper rescued but by noon, the ice was melted/looked like a rain storm under the trees. Now it is in the forties. The snowplows are parked around the corner. I wish they'd leave and I could dream of spring.

message 1274: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Good for the horses. Is it because they have "horse sense" they are able to ride out the storm in style?

message 1275: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) They have a good barn, Nina. Marg designed & positioned it well.

We didn't get any mail today & the trash wasn't picked up last week. I sure hope they do it this week. We had no satellite TV all morning due to the ice, but it came back around noon. It got up to 37 today & is sloppy/slippery out. I don't think I've got enough to plow on the lane, but will probably put out a lot of salt tomorrow. Have to see what we have after tonight & the mist/rain stops.

message 1276: by Nina (last edited Feb 21, 2015 05:12PM) (new)

Nina | 6069 comments You all know how strange our weather has been this winter/yes, I am grateful it's not Boston. However, it was near fifty degrees today and had a nice walk and then the high of twenty three is going to be our high for tomorrow and that's at midnight. By seven in the morning the wind chill will be zero. Figure?

message 1277: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Ugh. What a rollercoaster, but you're right, it's better than 10' of snow!

message 1278: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Hope you are all OK. Glad the animals are OK.

message 1279: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Dry but very cold today. Down to seven degrees this morning but sun's out and it is almost warm at tweenty, but not quite. My husband busy converting all our tv's to digital. And i am giving the birds extra food and carrying hot water to the bird bath and mostly reading and writing and watering plants. My gardenia keeps dropping buds. Why? Does anyone have an idea?

message 1280: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It's good to see the sun out. Our current temp here is 15.8F

message 1281: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Think spring in a month. Can't wait but must.

Mercurialgem | 27 comments Cloudy. 61F. A little drizzle but it stopped now. There is a glow out there which I LOVE.

Weather.com says heavy rain for today so maybe later. It did rain yesterday and when driving home this car spin and hit the side of the road. Thankfully, the crash wasn't that hard but still scary. =/

BTW - Cali here.

Hi Mercurialgem. Thanks for dropping by!
What does "Cali" mean?

message 1284: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's 17 here, but feels colder. Supposed to go down to 4 tonight. I just plowed trails for Marg & the animals. It was killing her to get the manure out. It just took 30 minutes & the horses were in the barn, so I thought I could leave the big barn doors where I keep the tractor open. Mistake! Indy & Chip both went in there to inspect the place. They didn't get hurt or knock anything over, so no harm done.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments 2.8F here! They're forecasting a low of -18 °F tonight.

Nina | 6069 comments Oh Joy, hope you don't have to venture out. Do ou have enough to eat in your house? And your poor little dog. I will say a prayer tonight to St. Jude/saint of the impossible/for relief soon. love nina

message 1287: by Mercurialgem (new)

Mercurialgem | 27 comments Cali is just short for California. I just wanted to let y'all know what state I was reporting from. =]

message 1288: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We got it, Mercurialgem. It's a warm one. We hate you.
;)

Just kidding, of course. Lucky you. It was 5 when I left the house this morning & it's supposed to get a couple of degrees colder by dawn. The high today might be in the mid 20's & so it goes until Sunday.

Sunday is Marg's birthday. Ugh. I have no idea what to get her for her birthday. I scraped her a path to the manure pile last night. What more could a girl want?
;)

Nina, thank you for your good wishes. Yes, we have enough food. I have a little coat which I put on our dog when he goes out. He doesn't stay out long!

message 1290: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I can't imagine how Marge would want anything else, Jim. What a unique present. Hope she has a sense of humor..

message 1291: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Wish Marg a happy birthday for us, Jim.

message 1292: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) LOL, Nina. I'll tell her that.

Will do, Joy.

Nina | 6069 comments Hope my azaleas survive all this up and down temps. Once long ago when our weather was like this, I lost my climbing roses. It's a wait and see now. joy, here's a quote you might like: "A child who reads will be an adult who thinks." M. J. Rose

message 1294: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Feb 25, 2015 05:19PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I hope your flowers will survive!
Good quote on reading. Here's another:
“to know how to read is to light a lamp in the mind, to release the soul from prison, to open a gate to the universe." ---p. 292, _Pavilion of Women_, (1948) by Pearl S. Buck

message 1295: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I love that quote JOy. I am going to pass it on to my writer friends. Thanks. I am thinking of getting on the list for "A Spool of Blue Thread," by Anne Tyler. Are you familiar with it?

message 1296: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, thanks for mentioning A Spool of Blue Thread by Anne Tyler. I used to look forward to reading books by Anne Tyler but ever since I read her Back When We Were Grownups, I am wary. As one Goodreads reviewer said, the novel is full of "unnecessary descriptions and superfluous blah-blah". It was torture trying to find the good parts in that story. As you know, my review is at: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 1297: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Yesterday was in the fifties/today started at five degrees.

message 1298: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, I agree with you on Anne Tyler's books. "The Homesick Restaurant," was my favorite and as it turned out, Anne T's favorite also. I really also liked "The Accidental Tourist," and the movie. Some of her books I waded through and thought they were over wordy and I got tired of her many hippie characters when that was passe over all. But here's a quote of hers I really like: "I read so I can live more than one life in more than one place." Anne Tyler

Of course, Tyler's _Breathing Lessons_ won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction (1989). I read it a long time ago. I also read _The Accidental Tourist_. I remember liking both.

One that I read more recently was Tyler's Noah's Compass. I thought that was a good read. Here's my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Below is a link to my book shelf showing all the Anne Tyler books I've read. It should show my "stars" and also it should have links to my reviews. In most of them, I didn't say much because I read them too long ago to remember details.
