Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, at least you've had breaks in between. Our cold, freezing weather has been lasting a long, long time. The snow is so high there is no place to put it anymore when clearing it. The piles are getting higher and higher. The Nat'l Weather service says:
================================================
"Tonight [Mon. 2/9]: Snow likely, possibly mixed with freezing drizzle ... Chance of precipitation is 60%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible."
==================================================
The words "freezing drizzle" make me nervous. Ice on snow-covered trees can mean breakage of branches and subsequent loss of electricity. That's really scary.

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, We've had a few really very cold days/single digit just above zero but so far this winter will be remembered at a mild one/Yours will be remembered in very different terms. Nothing lasts forever but it must seem like it with more snow on the way. Take Care, nina

message 1203: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Feb 10, 2015 12:54PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Yes, Nina, the cold DOES seem like it's lasting forever! After a while it wears you down, especially with the snow and ice building up.

message 1204: by Werner (new)

Werner Joy, I spent January 1979 in Chicago (long story!), and so lived through the blizzard(s) of '79. I can still well recall the experience of walls of snow piled up so high there was no room to put new snow as it was shoveled; so I can relate to what you're going through. Stay warm; our thoughts and best wishes are with you!

Here in the Bluefields, we have no snow at present, but our weather recently has been cold and overcast.

message 1205: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Werner, thank you for your good wishes. I NEED them! lol

message 1206: by Werner (new)

Werner You're welcome, Joy, always!

message 1207: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, Is there an end in sight? I hear from my granddaughter in CT that she too, is sick of winter and snow days from school. She teaches at U or New Haven and must do all of her catch up work at home. She says, "please, no more snow days or ice,"

message 1208: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I can see the problem for the school systems. If there are too many snow days, the schools might have to stay open after June. I wonder how many times that's happened.

message 1209: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Depends on the school system & how the dice rolled when they made the schedule. Due to snow days, they're losing a 3 day weekend & a teacher planning day. Still no need to run the year longer, yet.

message 1210: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Feb 11, 2015 04:58PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I see, Jim. That makes sense. I remember, as a kid, how we used to LOVE snow days! LOL

message 1211: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I think snow days are fun for kids but apparently not for teachers. Did you know some cities are banning slad rides for fear of being sued if there is an accident. I could have sued many times over/never would. My kids survived sledding and loved it as did my taboggan sleding husband in WI.

message 1212: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Blame judges & our current idea that no one is personally responsible. A park with a good hill is no longer 'use at your own risk'. Stupid & a few law suits have messed up a good thing for millions.
:(

message 1213: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Feb 12, 2015 09:44AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I used to love sled riding! (I call it sleigh-riding.) When I was a kid, I'd sleigh-ride on the hilly public streets in Yonkers, NY. I could have been hit by a car! But I LOVED it. One time I sleigh-rode at a hill at a public reservoir in Yonkers. I was all by myself. The sled stopped short at a bump and I kept going. It tore ALL the buttons off my coat! LOL

Less than 5 years ago, I sleigh-rode down a hill in a park-like area in our present town. I don't know where I got the energy to climb back up the hill again, but I did... several times. I'm sure I was in my 70s at the time. Again, I was all by myself; no one was around. My husband waited in the car watching me. :)

message 1214: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Lexington was supposed to start the day at 0 degrees, so I figured we'd be in the negatives. Nope! It was 15 degrees which didn't feel bad at all. It's dry & there's no wind. It's just wrong to be happy about 15 degrees, isn't it?

message 1215: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Feb 13, 2015 06:40AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim wrote: "... It's just wrong to be happy about 15 degrees, isn't it? ..."

Jim, I know what you mean. Everything is relative! lol

message 1216: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments You live up to your name, Joy. That's what it sounded like to me visulizing you sliding down the hill. Cheers!

message 1217: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Yes, Nina, sliding down a hill on a sled can be so much fun. Have you heard of "tubing" down a hill? Near us there's a ski resort that has tubing. Here's the link (see picture there):
http://www.westmtn.net/tubing/
At the above-linked page, it says:
"It’s like sled riding, but not as much work! The whole gang can fly down the chutes and you don’t even have to walk back up the hill, our 2 cable tows gently pull you up the hill while you sit and relax on your tube. Tubes are provided by West Mountain."

Sounds like so much fun! I'd like to try it but am afraid that at my age, it could turn out to be risky if there were a "tumble". Why tempt fate? :)

message 1218: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I looked at the picture. Looks safer than snowboarding. MY grandson in law was in a terrible accident as a snowboarder. He survived, barely and took months to recuperate. Tubing must be a better answer.

message 1219: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We used regular inner tubes years ago since we had them around for going down the creek or hanging out in the ponds during the summer.

Two days ago the weather man said it was going to be 0 yesterday & this morning. It wasn't, 15 & 29 respectively. The cold front has come in with a vengeance at noon today. The wind is 40 mph & gusting over 60 with an inch of snow in the past couple of hours. The temp is still up there at 32 degrees, but is supposed to fall fast now. I really hope no trees get blown down across the fence.

message 1220: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Not good, hope you don't lose power and no trees fall. We lost a beautiful redbud in a bad ice storm a few years ago.

message 1221: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I keep hoping this bad weather will end but it just keep on coming!

message 1222: by Werner (new)

Werner The heavy snow and rapidly falling temperatures from Jim's area are moving east, as usual; snow has been pouring down here since about mid-afternoon. Barb and I ate at Ryan's to celebrate Valentine's Day; but by the time we came out, the road conditions had worsened so badly we gave up any plans of doing anything else. By the time we got home, the temperature was already down to 32 degrees (it had been 38 when we set out), and will undoubtedly fall much further.

message 1223: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments My remote outdoor thermometer reads 17.2 F right now. It snowed lightly almost all day. More snow coming tonight and tomorrow. It seems like it's been days since the temp was over 20 degrees F. At night it's near zero. The build-up of ice is scary.

Tonight they predict a low of Low: 4°F. For Sunday night they predict a low of -16°F.

message 1224: by Werner (new)

Werner Surprisingly (since we've mostly been warmer than you folks), Joy, our predicted low for tonight is slightly lower than yours, at 2 degrees. :-( I don't know what they're expecting here for tomorrow night. Stay warm up there!

message 1225: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The wind was wicked for about 8 or 10 hours today. It knocked a lot of stuff over that normally has no problem. Marg went grocery shopping & said she was really glad she wasn't driving the bus. I'll bet some tractor trailers had to pull over.

The temp plummeted & is supposed to hit 0 tonight. It dropped from a brief high of 33 down to the teens in a couple of hours. It's 13 now.

message 1226: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments We're with you with low temps but only prediciting a dusting to couple of inches of snow. We'll see. You're right it's great to have our warm temps some day but then it seems worse when we are right back to winter. However, glad we are in your snowshoes.

message 1227: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Let's keep our eyes on spring! :)

"That's the reason a bird can sing--
on his darkest day, he believes in spring."
---from a poem by Douglas Malloch

message 1228: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We're supposed to get a boatload of snow tomorrow starting in the morning. Estimates are ranging from 4" to a foot. Marg is worried they send the kids to school & then call it early with her driving them home in a blizzard. That's bad enough, but getting the bus back into our lane is tough when that happens. I'm going to take the day off of work. At least then I can plow the lane for her, if I have to.

message 1229: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, I hope you don't get that much snow. Hope Marg won't have to drive that bus either! Good luck!

Tonight's supposed to get extra cold with a low of -15 °F. Sometimes it's better not to know how cold it's going to get! LOL

message 1230: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We're looking at a foot of snow tomorrow so I've already taken a vacation day. It's supposed to snow from 8 to 8 & get really cold. There's a 60% chance of more snow on Tuesday & Wednesday is supposed to have a high of 8 degrees & a low of -10. I think I moved to the arctic, not the south!!!
:(

message 1231: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Oh, Jim! You have a hard day/week ahead. Sounds terrible! You have my sympathy. Good luck!

message 1232: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Jim and Joy, our two inch snow last night seems like nothing. How come the kids aren't off for President's Day? They are here in both states; MO and KS. Hang in there if possible..

message 1233: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Do you have snowplows for the roads to the schools?

message 1234: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The kids were supposed to be off for President's day, but then got it cancelled due to snow days. Now it is snow day. I think tomorrow will be, too. The snow is really coming down. It was very small & light to start. It was snowing hard when I got up at 5:30, but we only had an inch by 10am. The flakes have gotten bigger & we're up to 3" now before noon. If it's still snowing when it gets dark then I won't be plowing the driveway until it gets light tomorrow. I'm sure there won't be any school, either. Not only are there a lot of little roads to plow, but they have to clear the parking lots, too. On top of that, salt won't work well for melting the snow. It's only good down to 15 degrees & we're at 11 now. It's not supposed to warm up much, either.

We haven't seen a single snowplow down either of our roads & one is a snow emergency route. The only car I've seen go by fishtailed near the end of our lane. No reason for it as the road is level there. Must just be really slick. I'm not planning to find out first hand.

message 1235: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I think the schools here are officially closed for President's Day here.

Good luck, Jim. I hope you'll be able to manage OK through your snowstorm.

message 1236: by Werner (new)

Werner Our temperature here was five degrees above zero at last report; it snowed during the night, began to snow heavily this morning, and continues to. (I usually gauge the depth of the snow by the accumulation on top of the fence posts; but not much is accumulating there because of the strong winds.) Bluefield College and the Mercer County schools are both closed for the day (not for President's Day, but for the weather). Here in town, the snowplows are out, but I don't know about the rural areas.

message 1237: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Keep warm, Werner!

message 1238: by Werner (new)

Werner Will do, Joy!

message 1239: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I spent 2 hours on the tractor clearing our lane starting about 4:30pm. I guess we got 8"-10", but it's hard to tell & it's still snowing a bit plus blowing around. It's a very light snow & the ground is frozen, so I didn't scrape too much gravel off. I had to come in 2 or 3 times to warm my fingers up, but the rest of me was OK, although my toes were cold by the end.

I'm not sure if I'll be going in to work in the morning or not. Marg is definitely off. We had a couple of snowplows go by, but the road is pretty awful. It's a frozen slush since the salt isn't cutting it & the temp is going down. It's not supposed to warm up all week. The worst news is the high on Thursday is supposed to be 3 with the low for the 2 nights bracketing it down in the double digit negatives. It hasn't gotten that cold in the 7 years we've been here.

Indy is wearing a blanket, but Speedy & Chip are doing fine. Speedy's coat is so thick the snow just piles up on him. Chip's snow melted & he was making jingly noises whenever he moved as the icicles on him slapped together. Far from miserable, they've all been bouncing around in the snow having a grand time. Pip & Lily both liked running around in it, too. Pip would occasionally disappear as he ran through a deep spot since he's only 12" at the shoulder. They didn't stay out for too long, though.

message 1240: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, you must be exhausted! Glad to hear that the horses are doing OK.

message 1241: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It was 3 degrees when I left the house & it took well over an hour to make my typical 45 minute drive into work this morning. Only the slow lane on the Interstate was clear. The middle lane was working on it as morons doing 20mph had to be passed, but the only vehicle in the fast lane was one snowplow/salt truck. The back roads were awful, but completely empty. The only traction was rough ice. I almost didn't make it through one stop sign that's on a slight slope even though I rolled through it. I am not looking forward to the drive home.

message 1242: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Be careful, Jim.

message 1243: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Jim, Saw pictures of Louisville on TV news and so have an idea of what you are going though. Hope it doesn't get any worse/bad enough, right?

message 1244: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Oh, what a joy that the horses are enjoying themselves. What characters.

message 1245: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We're supposed to get another 2" to 4" of snow tonight & horribly low temperatures, so I guess it will get a little worse until this cold snap breaks. They've already cancelled school for tomorrow & the water tap in the grooming area of the barn froze up on Marg this evening. It opened quickly since it is a frost free, but I guess some really cold water was trapped in the pipe. It doesn't have much of a slope.

The temp did get up into the mid 20's today which helped clear the roads, but it's supposed to go down to 11 tonight. Only up into the teens tomorrow & then down to -7. 10 degrees colder than that the following night. Brrr.

On the plus side, the vacation day I took yesterday turned into only a 1/2 day since they let most everyone go at noon yesterday. I might be taking another day tomorrow. We'll see how it goes tonight. So long as the water doesn't freeze & the electric stays on, it's not that bad. If either of those goes, it's a real pain.

message 1246: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Oh, just got another weather update. It's ugly. On top of the record cold, they're calling for a good possibility of freezing rain on Saturday. You can see it in a nutshell here:
http://www.lex18.com/category/292090/...

Ugly!

message 1247: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm taking a vacation day. I thought my shop light was flickering this morning, but it was just disappearing behind walls of blowing snow. It's only 150' away, but the powerful outside light is completely invisible at times. Yuck.

We already have over an inch & it's coming down hard. It's 16 degrees out, so I'm sure I could get out & to work, but I'm not sure I could get back. The wind is supposed to really pick up around noon.

I hadn't realized it, but there was a travel ban in Frankfort until 5:30 pm yesterday. I wonder if they'll put it back on. They're also getting really cold. It was 3 or -3 here yesterday morning while they were at -7. Sometimes it sucks being down in the valley.

message 1248: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Feb 18, 2015 04:57AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, I can imagine what you're going through. Hope this awful weather will be over soon. It was -11F on our remote thermometer an hour ago. Online it says -16F. http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick....

message 1249: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Work called - phone & Internet problems. Oh what fun. Apparently it's a large scale problem, so nothing I can do but make soothing noises. :sigh:

It's blowing like crazy & I guess we got a couple more inches, maybe 3. At least I'm not in Maine or Boston. Marg said they already have 100" inches & this storm is supposed to give them another 18". That will be just about 10' of snow. Makes our paltry foot or so seem like much less of a problem.
:)

message 1250: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) That's too cold, Joy. Brrr...
