Weather - What's YOUR weather today? (Part ONE - Started Sat., March 14, 2009) (Let's keep this going.)

At least Dorothy put Kansas on the map. I'm ashamed to say that I know very little about Kansas. In fact, while googling, I came across the following map: ====>
http://student.britannica.com/compton...
I took note of the fact that Kansas is bordered by the states of Colorado, Nebraska, Missouri, and Oklahoma. I still have trouble picturing the exact location of Kansas on a map. I must have been absent when they taught that part of geography. :)
How did you end up in Kansas, Randi? As for me, I was born in NYS and have never lived in any other state.

Looks like summer has finally arrived! The sun is shining and there's a nice breeze.
What's the temp where you are?

quote from Robin Williams in "Good Morning Vietnam"
99F at present, with an heat index of 115F.
Yes, I'm staying inside with the a/c cranked up.
:eek:

We were framing a porch on a new type of house - it was built out of sections with polystyrene (white) glued inbetween each wall stud & put up in sections. The sun was beating down, glaring off the walls & we were getting sunburned under our chins & arms. I was using a nail gun to put in the rafters for the porch & Roger was down below, cutting & passing them up.
I kept telling him to turn the bloody thing off - it was driving me mad - but he wouldn't. Finally I just pulled back the safety on the nail gun & let loose a few 10d nails at the radio. It pretty much exploded. Very satisfactory. He kept muttering about me murdering his radio for the rest of the job, though.
Come to think of it, he mentioned it the last time I saw him, several years later. I wonder if he's gotten over it yet? Been most of 20 years now...

LOL

The heat can do that to you. :)

It's been hot here too, but tonight we had a short thunderstorm and it's cooled thing down a bit. But it's very muggy and the temp is 72 F at 9:30 PM. Uncomfortable weather.

No a/c here. Just fans. :)

That sounds really oppressive, Randi! Best thing to do is to go shopping in an air-conditioned store and eat out in an a/c restaurant. :)

We're down to 71 degrees at 10:30 PM. I made the mistake earlier of going outside to take care of my potted plants when it was getting dark. With all the dampness, the bugs were out and now I'm itching all over. :)

I would be happy to only have weather in the low 80s. I usually consider that a very high temperature. But after 4 100 degree days in a row, I would love the low 80s. I guess it's all relative. It almost never gets this hot this soon in the year. I wish it would come late in the summer like it usually comes.
Randi

Wow, Randi, I don't think I've ever experienced 100 degrees. We're down to 62 degrees at about 10:50 PM. The cool evenings help.

Nina, you really are going through a spell hot weather!
I found one of the books you mentioned, _The Choral Society_.
But I couldn't find the second one. Can you give us a link?

Thanks, Nina. Below is the link to the Goodreads book description: ====>
_Dangerous Laughter Thirteen Stories_ by Steven Millhauser
At Wikipedia I learned that Steven Millhauser won the 1997 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for his novel _Martin Dressler The Tale of an American Dreamer_.

Randi, enjoy the coolness. We're supposed to have a string of cloudy days coming. Our weather hasn't been very nice lately. I want to do some re-potting of plants and I need some nice days or I won't be in the mood. It's either too hot or too chilly.

It has been in high 90s(with heat index-104 to 110) for past few weeks here in NC. You walk outside and hit a wall of heat!!! Not good! We could use some serious rain , soon.
I haven't seen any of the movies listed or read those books listed. I did finished the book The Broken Window" by Deaver. It was excellent. Then I read "Say Goodbye" by Lisa Gardner.I would rate it a 3. It was good but not one of her best. Then I picked up "The Front" by Patricia Cornwell. I didn't read "AT Risk", the 1st in this series,but I don't think it would make a difference. I give a 2 rating, the entire book was never developed well at all. Now I'm reading "Rules Of Deception". A thriller by Christopher Reich. He is a new author for me to read. Am enjoying it very much. Lots of action.
Regards, Donna

Donna - I wish I could send you all the rain we're having here around Lake George, NY! It's been rainy and wet for so long that everything in the house seems damp.
Glad to hear you're enjoying your reading.

It's been a bit too dry for the past couple of weeks. Good for hay, but the ground is too hard to get any weeding done & my wild hillside looks like I haven't weeded it at all this year rather than the 2 or 3 times that I have.
I also put down some stuff to kill grubs, but not earthworms. The moles have been going wild, which means the dogs are after them, so our yard is beginning to look like a mine field. Worse, the bugs must lay their eggs on the fence, so there is a concentration of grubs under the fence. That means a mole tunnel & then the dogs dig under the fence. The grub stuff needs water to drive it into the ground & activate it. We had to water the back yard, but I'm holding off on the side & front yards hoping we'll get rain.

We've got plenty of rain here! It's depressing how wet and rainy it's been. Everything is so damp.
We have moles too. Their tunnels make the lawn very uneven. So far we haven't done anything about them. Alice, our son's dog likes to dig. She digs holes all around the yard when we babysit her. Keeping a nice lawn is a job under these conditions. Keeping a perfect lawn has never a priority for us. Our lawn gets mowed and looks neat, but it's far from perfect.
I do envy people who have lush, manicured lawns and lovely yards with beautiful flowers and bushes. If I had unlimited funds, I would have continual lawn and landscaping service. I love the line: "Imagine what God could do if he had money?" :)

I don't care to do much with my lawn & think many of the services are hard on the environment with too much herbicide, pesticide & fiddling. I don't like craters in the lawn or holes under the fence, though. Otherwise I try to spray a broad leaf plant killer to take out the worst of the weeds occasionally & mow it. No watering, I'll dump fertilizer on it when I do the fields - they're more important.
I was surprised when I started looking into grub killers just how mean so many of them are. Many kill off all the earthworms! Others I couldn't use because of the dogs or the horses that eat the grass on the other side of the fence. A systemic poison that kills grubs & horses doesn't quite fit our life style - it would end mine rather rapidly!

Nina, what are you using to do your genealogy notes? It's wonderful that you're taking the time. I started ours based on a book my great grandfather wrote in 1930. All neatly handwritten notes about the family as far back as he could remember. A wonderful resource. Much better than trying to decipher old Bible pages that don't give much information.
The worst was trying to get stuff out of my maternal grandmother. I was in my aunt's kitchen trying to pick Grammy's mind when she mentioned her brother lived nearby. My aunt was startled to find out she had an uncle. Families can be so weird!

Jim, I'm always wary of weedkillers and chemical treatments for the yard. I do try to read the small print but I'd rather not use anything, just to be safe, especially because of the pets. I'm glad you read the small print, Jim.

Nina, one of my favorite aunts was named Lucy. Glad to hear that things have cooled off and that you're enjoying your flowers. Good luck with the genealogy. Your family will appreciate it.
Here is a title-link to _The Choral Society_.

Jim, I see you've been keeping busy and accomplishing things. I'm trying to get things done but our pace is very slow. The muggy weather really slows one down. Today is a bit drier and not as humid. I feel my energy coming back. I even vacuumed the living room! (lol)

Let me rephrase that...
IT'S POURING AGAIN. :-(

What am I complaining about...
IT'S BOOK-READING WEATHER! :)

LOL - Nina, I know what you mean about "old" geraniums. I like the comparison to a bonsai plant. LOL I'm trying to cut back my year-old geraniums so they'll fill out. Hope it works. I think that next year my garden will be exclusively made up of begonias, like these:

(Click on thumbnail.)
QUESTION: What do they call this variety, as opposed to the begonias with the larger flowers?
Haven't read _The Book Thief_. Here's the cover-link:

Sounds like an unusual book.

From the Netflix description:
"Zusak not only creates a mesmerizing and original story but also writes with poetic syntax, causing readers to deliberate over phrases and lines, even as the action impels them forward."

The current temp at mid-morning (9/12/09) here is 64°F and we have no sunshine.
It will be interesting to follow the weather changes at this time of year. I'm still hoping for some warm days. It can happen! Indian Summer!
There are many different stories about the origin of the term "Indian Summer". See Wiki at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_s...
I prefer to think of Indian Summer simply as "a period of unusually warm weather in the autumn" or ""spell of warm weather after the first frost".

Nina, I'm glad you got that straightened out.
Sometimes these technical glitches can be a real puzzle.

Thanks for your help! I did get a Goodreads today but I couldn't leave a reply or comment. So I tried following your instructions and it worked. You all out there you don't know what you're missing till you don't have it. I am happy to be back on board and now to answer what I couldn't do before; I am in KS but unlike our other goodread neighbor we have had no rain for a few days and it is 79 degrees and fairly nice outside today; very green grass in the field across the street and my impatients have grown almost across my patio. Everything in this part of KS is lush; unlike some Septembers here. But, here in our part are lots of trees and hills and streams etc. nina

Nina, it sounds like you still have a bit of summer left in KS! We got up to the lower 70s today here in northern NY. Everyday I make it a point to go sit outside and enjoy the sunshine because soon I won't be able to do it with the cold weather coming. I hate the cold.

We haven't our first frost here yet. Our flowers are still blooming.

Nina, it's interesting to hear how much warmer your temps are in Kansas than in NY.
I liked your quote. Here are some similar ones:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Life is a journey, not a destination." -Ralph Waldo Emerson
"It is not the destination that is important, but the journey there." -Chinese Proverb
"The journey is the reward." -Chinese Proverb
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
But I would enjoy my journey more without the arthritis. LOL

LOL - Nina, this is the first year arthritis has given me any major trouble. Now I understand what arthritis sufferers go through. When pain walks in, everything in one's life is affected.
It helps to sit out in the sun... and today we've got plenty of that!
The forecast is: "Sunny, with a high near 75".
Current temp (around 11:00 AM) is 61. Not bad in the sun!
Think I'll go out on the deck with Romeo and a cup of coffee.
Might as well enjoy the sunshine while we have it.

This is it, folks! Good bye flowers! :-(
Oy! Y'all have my sympathies Joy. /shiver/
It's 72F here at present, with a high tomorrow of 85F. It's been scuzzy rain all day though.

Hi Randi in Kansas. Now I know why Dorothy of the Wizard of Oz was blown away for a while. It's windy in Kansas! Do many people make Wizard of Oz jokes about people living in Kansas?
I just googled and found out that there is an Oz Museum in Kansas. See: ====>
