Hi Randi in Kansas. Now I know why Dorothy of the Wizard of Oz was blown away for a while. It's windy in Kansas! Do many people make Wizard of Oz jokes about people living in Kansas?

I just googled and found out that there is an Oz Museum in Kansas. See: ====>

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) Yes, they do. They just slip right past me anymore. It's like "Oh yeah, another Dorothy joke. I've heard that one before. I think I have heard all of them by now."

At least Dorothy put Kansas on the map. I'm ashamed to say that I know very little about Kansas. In fact, while googling, I came across the following map: ====>
http://student.britannica.com/compton...

I took note of the fact that Kansas is bordered by the states of Colorado, Nebraska, Missouri, and Oklahoma. I still have trouble picturing the exact location of Kansas on a map. I must have been absent when they taught that part of geography. :)

How did you end up in Kansas, Randi? As for me, I was born in NYS and have never lived in any other state.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Temp here (around Lake George, NY) is up to 81 F at about 2:00 PM ET (Wed. June 24, 2009).

Looks like summer has finally arrived! The sun is shining and there's a nice breeze.

What's the temp where you are?

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I hate the 'heat index' & 'wind chill' numbers. I once shot a guy's radio because of the heat index. He played a horrible country & western station that would find a few songs & play them over & over. On top of that, they'd tell you just how hot it was in between each song.

We were framing a porch on a new type of house - it was built out of sections with polystyrene (white) glued inbetween each wall stud & put up in sections. The sun was beating down, glaring off the walls & we were getting sunburned under our chins & arms. I was using a nail gun to put in the rafters for the porch & Roger was down below, cutting & passing them up.

I kept telling him to turn the bloody thing off - it was driving me mad - but he wouldn't. Finally I just pulled back the safety on the nail gun & let loose a few 10d nails at the radio. It pretty much exploded. Very satisfactory. He kept muttering about me murdering his radio for the rest of the job, though.

Come to think of it, he mentioned it the last time I saw him, several years later. I wonder if he's gotten over it yet? Been most of 20 years now...

We're down to 71 degrees at 10:30 PM. I made the mistake earlier of going outside to take care of my potted plants when it was getting dark. With all the dampness, the bugs were out and now I'm itching all over. :)

I would be happy to only have weather in the low 80s. I usually consider that a very high temperature. But after 4 100 degree days in a row, I would love the low 80s. I guess it's all relative. It almost never gets this hot this soon in the year. I wish it would come late in the summer like it usually comes.

Randi, enjoy the coolness. We're supposed to have a string of cloudy days coming. Our weather hasn't been very nice lately. I want to do some re-potting of plants and I need some nice days or I won't be in the mood. It's either too hot or too chilly.

Donna (skeets) | 15 comments Hi All,
It has been in high 90s(with heat index-104 to 110) for past few weeks here in NC. You walk outside and hit a wall of heat!!! Not good! We could use some serious rain , soon.
I haven't seen any of the movies listed or read those books listed. I did finished the book The Broken Window" by Deaver. It was excellent. Then I read "Say Goodbye" by Lisa Gardner.I would rate it a 3. It was good but not one of her best. Then I picked up "The Front" by Patricia Cornwell. I didn't read "AT Risk", the 1st in this series, but I don't think it would make a difference. I give a 2 rating, the entire book was never developed well at all. Now I'm reading "Rules Of Deception". A thriller by Christopher Reich. He is a new author for me to read. Am enjoying it very much. Lots of action.
Regards, Donna

Donna - I wish I could send you all the rain we're having here around Lake George, NY! It's been rainy and wet for so long that everything in the house seems damp.

message 77: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The weather here finally got cooler this week. I'm hoping for rain, but not until tomorrow. We should get a load of hay this evening. It needs a dry day so Jerry can bale it & we can get it to our barn.

It's been a bit too dry for the past couple of weeks. Good for hay, but the ground is too hard to get any weeding done & my wild hillside looks like I haven't weeded it at all this year rather than the 2 or 3 times that I have.

I also put down some stuff to kill grubs, but not earthworms. The moles have been going wild, which means the dogs are after them, so our yard is beginning to look like a mine field. Worse, the bugs must lay their eggs on the fence, so there is a concentration of grubs under the fence. That means a mole tunnel & then the dogs dig under the fence. The grub stuff needs water to drive it into the ground & activate it. We had to water the back yard, but I'm holding off on the side & front yards hoping we'll get rain.

We've got plenty of rain here! It's depressing how wet and rainy it's been. Everything is so damp.

We have moles too. Their tunnels make the lawn very uneven. So far we haven't done anything about them. Alice, our son's dog likes to dig. She digs holes all around the yard when we babysit her. Keeping a nice lawn is a job under these conditions. Keeping a perfect lawn has never a priority for us. Our lawn gets mowed and looks neat, but it's far from perfect.

I do envy people who have lush, manicured lawns and lovely yards with beautiful flowers and bushes. If I had unlimited funds, I would have continual lawn and landscaping service. I love the line: "Imagine what God could do if he had money?" :)

message 79: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I like that saying!

I don't care to do much with my lawn & think many of the services are hard on the environment with too much herbicide, pesticide & fiddling. I don't like craters in the lawn or holes under the fence, though. Otherwise I try to spray a broad leaf plant killer to take out the worst of the weeds occasionally & mow it. No watering, I'll dump fertilizer on it when I do the fields - they're more important.

I was surprised when I started looking into grub killers just how mean so many of them are. Many kill off all the earthworms! Others I couldn't use because of the dogs or the horses that eat the grass on the other side of the fence. A systemic poison that kills grubs & horses doesn't quite fit our life style - it would end mine rather rapidly!

Nina | 6069 comments Finally, it's cooler. More like June weather rather than July and Auguest.Sorry it wasn't like this when my ID daughter was visiting.. By the way, her email name is Lucy the librarian..Isn't that neat? She is the childrens librarian in Post Falls, ID..I just exchanged my spring flowers(pansies) for the summer ones; petunias, geraniums etc.. It is pretty as they are mostly lavendar and purple and are now spilling out from large baskets hung on the blue green fence. Hope they last through the next big blast of heat. I am busy writing detail by detail of a family genealogy..It is necessary but tiring. nina ps for entertainment I take a break and read, "Choral Society." It is fun so far.

message 81: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm so glad for the cooler weather. It wasn't quite as cool this morning as yesterday - 70 - but still that's not bad. We put 350 bales of hay up, so we're good to go for the winter. Yeah! I love getting that done & this is about record time. Usually it's August, but it's been a wonderful year. Too much rain for the timothy's first cutting in MD, but all has worked out well here. We've had plenty of rain to grow it & good enough breaks to cut, dry & bale it.

Nina, what are you using to do your genealogy notes? It's wonderful that you're taking the time. I started ours based on a book my great grandfather wrote in 1930. All neatly handwritten notes about the family as far back as he could remember. A wonderful resource. Much better than trying to decipher old Bible pages that don't give much information.

The worst was trying to get stuff out of my maternal grandmother. I was in my aunt's kitchen trying to pick Grammy's mind when she mentioned her brother lived nearby. My aunt was startled to find out she had an uncle. Families can be so weird!

Jim, I see you've been keeping busy and accomplishing things. I'm trying to get things done but our pace is very slow. The muggy weather really slows one down. Today is a bit drier and not as humid. I feel my energy coming back. I even vacuumed the living room! (lol)

LOL - Nina, I know what you mean about "old" geraniums. I like the comparison to a bonsai plant. LOL I'm trying to cut back my year-old geraniums so they'll fill out. Hope it works. I think that next year my garden will be exclusively made up of begonias, like these:
Free Image Hosting at www.picturetrail.com They're the easiest to maintain... and they're not as expensive.
QUESTION: What do they call this variety, as opposed to the begonias with the larger flowers?

Haven't read _The Book Thief_. Here's the cover-link:
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak by Markus Zusak
Sounds like an unusual book.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Well, the Fall season is fast approaching and the temps are dropping, although when we sit in the hot sun, it's still feels like summer. However, here in northern NY, the temps at night are getting cooler and cooler and daytime temps are often in the 60s.

The current temp at mid-morning (9/12/09) here is 64°F and we have no sunshine.

It will be interesting to follow the weather changes at this time of year. I'm still hoping for some warm days. It can happen! Indian Summer!

There are many different stories about the origin of the term "Indian Summer". See Wiki at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_s...

I prefer to think of Indian Summer simply as "a period of unusually warm weather in the autumn" or ""spell of warm weather after the first frost".

It helps to sit out in the sun... and today we've got plenty of that!
