Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Wow, Jim, a two week vacation for the kids! That's a lot! Around here they usually get about one week for the Christmas holidays.

Nina, when we were camping we used to say: "Are we having fun yet?" :)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Talking about ice, check THIS out:
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/4/20101216/t...
"Lighthouse becomes ice house" - "A lighthouse has become an ice sculpture near Cleveland, Ohio, covered in frozen spray from Lake Erie." (There's a video.)

"Unusually cold weather has pounded the eastern half of the US, pushing temperatures well below normal from the Great Lakes to Florida's citrus groves."

message 303: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Wow! That's awesome, Joy. Thanks. That puts a bit of perspective on my whining about 1/2" of ice!
;-)

The drive in was fine today, but I could see the cars of quite a few folks who didn't make it in yesterday. I guess the wreckers were too busy to get them all. Yeah, Nina, occasionally...
;-)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Yes, the TV news showed clips of many fender-benders caused by the icy situation on the roads. Lots of stress for everyone.

Jim, you had every right to express your feelings about the ice and cold. You have to deal with much more than the average person, especially with all the animals who need your daily attention and care. It's a lot of extra work and discomfort. So try to get enough rest in between if you can.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments For the record...

The temp right now (7:44 AM) in Glens Falls is a record-breaking -27, according to the TV. That's MINUS 27 degrees... 27 degrees below zero! Our private thermometer at home reads -17.9. The TV just said that it had been down to -30 earlier in Glens Falls.

message 306: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Better you than me! I don't like setting temperature records. I saw that the record cold temp for our area was -37 (Shelbyville) for yesterday set in 1994. I'm shocked. I didn't know it ever got that cold. Here's where the government lists it for our area.

http://www.crh.noaa.gov/lmk/?n=top10w...

I'm sure they have one for everyone. I googled
"record cold temperatures frankfort, KY
to find that link on top.

message 307: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, I tried finding a similar website for Glens Falls, but couldn't find one.

message 308: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I couldn't either, Joy. This was the best I could find for you all.
http://www.erh.noaa.gov/aly/past.htm

message 309: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Thanks, Jim. I sent the URL to Ed. His hobby is weather.

message 310: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Ed found the following website giving the weather history for Glens Falls:
http://weather-warehouse.com/WeatherH...
It goes back to 1944. It's called "Weather Warehouse".
He found it by googling for "Glens Falls weather history". It was about the 3rd hit down.

message 311: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I didn't see a top ten ugly weather, though.

I was keeping records of our rain & doing graphs by the month. I quit because of how misleading it is. There were times when a monthly graph or even a weekly one made it look like things weren't too bad, but we were really hurting from either drought or too much water. A lot depends on the wind & sun, also how much rain we got on either side & when during the period. Besides, there isn't anything I can do about it.
;-)

message 312: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Jan 24, 2011 11:49AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I'd be interested in a record showing how many sunny days there were in each of our winter months here. Sometimes it seems that most of our winter days are cloudy and gloomy.

Right now the sun is shining... but not much is melting at 4.6 degrees on our home thermometer. :) Officially the temp is -1 at Warren County Airport.

message 313: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments snow still deep but thirty eight degress this afternoon after 11 degrees this morning. Feel like a heat wave. nina

message 314: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I'd be happy with 38 degrees now too, Nina. :)

message 315: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We got up to 36 today. I just had to go out to the shop & didn't bother to put on a coat. Wow! A heat wave - comparatively, anyway.

Joy, there's a site:
http://www.wunderground.com/
where you can look up your area &, with some hunting around, find historical data. It lists all kinds of stuff like rainfall (type & as a liquid amount in inches) cloud cover, wind, barometric pressure & all sorts of groovy stuff.

Go to the site.
Put in your zip code in the search at the top.
Toward the bottom of the 'Current Conditions' box, but above the tabs with 'Aviation' & such on it, you'll find a link:
"Weather History for This Location"
That will give you summary information, charts & at the bottom you'll find a tabular layout of all the good stuff. You can even get it in comma delimited format so you can copy it into a spreadsheet & do your own, which is what I did for several years.

It looks like they simplified it since I've last done it. Not a big deal. It's raw & dry data, but might give you what you want. Eddy will probably have a field day with it. You can change the date & go back for years.

On the current conditions page, it's also fun to check out the weather stations they use. Many are private, but they also get data from government & other sources. I thought about getting a weather station for us since there aren't any up in my area. All the weather stations are over 400 feet below us so they often get our weather wrong. Unfortunately, those stations are expensive from what I could see. A decent base station starts at $600 & then there are all sorts of additions that are needed; precipitation meters, heaters for them for the winter, & all sorts of things. Does Eddy do any of that? I'd love to, if I could afford it.

message 316: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Eddie has a computerized weather monitoring system. That's all I know about it. He also likes to keep track of rainfall amounts.

As for Wunderground, I know it exists and years ago I posted many photos at their WunderPhotos site. I've never made use of all the weather details they provide, but I've enjoyed the photo section.

Here's a link to my photos at WunderPhoto.com:
http://www.wunderground.com/wximage/i...
As you will see, I added many explanatory captions to my pics. The numbers on the thumbnails indicate the number of photos in that group/series. Click on the thumbnail to see the pics in that group/series. Then you have to scroll down to the bottom to find all the thumbnails to the pics in that particular group/series.

Note that you can see more of my pics by clicking on "Next 50 results." I can't believe I uploaded all those photos and that they are still there!

Below is a link to the main page of the WunderPhotos Gallery with Photos from people all over. The photos change all the time:

Nina | 6069 comments Gives me a good idea of your area sans snow. nina

message 318: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Then Eddie should be able to print you out the top ten weather events for your area, Joy! Tell him to get on it.
;-)

Nice pictures. Pretty area.

message 319: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I'll ask him, Jim. :)

message 320: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Below is a link to a photo in our local Glens Falls, NY, newspaper:
http://poststar.com/submitted_media/c...
The theme was "Winter Wonderland".
The photo, taken on 1/24/11, is of a weather monitor screen showing a temp of -24 F.

The weather reports around that time said that our temps had gone as low as -30 F, a record-breaker.

message 321: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Brrr! I chat with one gal on here who lives up on the west side of Hudson Bay. The day before yesterday, it was -70F in her town. She said she weighed herself with her outdoor gear on & was 30 lbs heavier. I don't know how anyone manages (or would want to) live in such cold weather.

message 322: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It's no wonder that so many people go south!

message 323: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Jan 31, 2011 05:21PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Which of you is in the path of the huge snow storm that's brewing for Tuesday and Wednesday in many states? They're predicting heavy snow accumulations around here in NY, including all the area between Albany and Glens Falls and north.

An Albany newspaper report says "Total accumulations are expected to be between 15 and 30 inches by Thursday morning, according to the Weather Service."

I'm dreading this accumulation on top of our already accumulated snow. There's been very little melting because of the freezing temps we've had for so long. Right now our temp is 10 degrees F at 8:14 PM. It's supposed to go down to one degree below zero tonight.

message 324: by Nina (last edited Jan 31, 2011 05:24PM) (new)

Nina | 6069 comments We are in the blizzard's path; predicting anywhere from 5 to 25 inches of snow depending on which local area we are in. Possibly we will get 10 to 13 inches with 40 mile an hour winds. Today was freezing drizzle and our drive was a sheet of ice at times. My husband canceled his dr appointment; didn't want any broken bones. There has only been one blizzard in Kansas City since the weather was recorded. Our area is quite hilly which makes this weather condition more hazardous than it would be. I guess it might be headed your way. It will be below zero by Wednesday; high is nine degrees. Brrrr. from Ks nina ps Can you believe it was 54 degrees on Friday? It melted a lot of the seven inches of snow we got a week ago. Crazy weather here.

message 325: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, that certainly IS crazy weather you're having. Such fluctuations! The area around Glens Falls is flat. So that's a big help. Your hills definitely make things more hazardous for you. Hope you are well stocked up on food. Eddie says the foodmarket was crowded this afternoon with people getting ready for the storm.

message 326: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We are, thankfully, supposed to be just south of the mess. The weatherman was freaking out about how the storm was stretching across 26 states & the weird weather that was coming out of it. I'll be thinking of all of you getting slammed & quite happy not to join in!
;-)

We were supposed to hit 40 today, but hovered around freezing all day. Tomorrow is supposed to get up to 50 & rain, though.

message 327: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, I'm glad to hear that you're out of the storm area. Not only is it less hardship on you and Marg, but it's easier on your animals. Enjoy your milder temperatures.

message 328: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Feb 02, 2011 05:45AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Well, we've had what looks like almost a foot of snow here in Glens Falls and right now there's a fine, wet snow coming down. I had to walk the dog in the road because the snow is too deep in the backyard for his little legs. Our home weather station reads 18.9 degrees right now at 8:03 AM. All the schools are closed.

PS-Our local newspaper says: "Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings declared a snow emergency and closed all city buildings Wednesday. He urged everyone to stay home."

message 329: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Feb 03, 2011 05:10AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments The current outside temp on our home thermometer is 5.5 F at about 8 AM.
The snow accumulation of the past 2 days appears to be about 10 inches around our house. It's clear today and we don't expect more snow.

message 330: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Feb 05, 2011 01:28PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It's snowing again! Tonight they predict snow, freezing rain, and sleet.

The Nat'l Weather Service predicts for tonight: "New snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible. New ice accumulation of 0.1 to 0.3 of an inch possible."

Wunderground Weather predicts for tonight: Total snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches. Ice accumulation of up to one quarter of an inch."

Hope we don't lose our power!

PS-Current temp at 4:26 PM is 27.9 F on our home weather station.

message 331: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We got lucky & have been at or above freezing all day. We got some snow, but it melted quickly since most all the precip was rain.

message 332: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Feb 25, 2011 08:11AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It's snowing here in Glens Falls AGAIN! :-(
They say that the accumulation could be up to a foot. :-(
This continous bad weather is so dispiriting!
Temp is 31.5 F at 11:05 AM. At least it's not in the single digits.

message 333: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Winter came back. Last week it was in the 70's for two days and today the grass etc are snow covered; again. Probably about 3 inches last night. Folks here are optimistic and say, "Well, at least it is not a blizzard." In some ways I think, crazy as it is, it's mentally uplifting to have a bit of spring weather sprinkled in during the winter. nina

message 334: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I agree, Nina. A taste of spring is always welcome.

message 335: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's cold & drippy here, but the grass is starting to green up. I see some flowers poking up too. Yay!!!

message 336: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I don't think we'll be seeing green grass or flowers for a while. It's still snowing at 5:00 PM, although it had stopped for a while. Eddie had to shovel a space for our little Maltese to go out.

message 337: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It was pouring here this morning. The drive in was slow due to visibility & hydroplaning dangers, even on the freeway. It was coming down so hard that the least dip in the road was holding enough water to cause problems. There was a tornado just north of us & a fair amount of storm damage. At least it's warm. 57 or so.

message 338: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Feb 28, 2011 06:04AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It's pouring here too! Temp is 33.1 F.
Hope no one was hurt during the tornado.

message 339: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The peepers are out tonight!!! It's only 45, but it got up to 50 today.

I'm sure we'll get some more cold weather, but the grass is greening up. Iris & lilies are poking through at the same time as the crocus. Let's hope we don't get too hard a freeze from now on. That happened in 2007, the year we moved here. Then it was followed by a drought. Double whammy.

Oh well, nothing I can do about it, so I'll just enjoy the spring popping & hope for the best.

message 340: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, enjoy your taste of spring. It will be months before we'll be hearing the peepers here! We're still piled all over with wet snow. We still have icicles. Temp is 21.4F at 8:49PM. It's supposed to get a bit warmer next weekend, but the temps will go back down after that. I'd be happy if only the snow and icicles would melt off the roof. I don't enjoy all the dripping!

message 341: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It was below freezing here this morning, but just below & went above as soon as the sun came out. Thanks. I will enjoy it!

message 342: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments I brought my cleats to work with me yesterday. I go to clients' homes and with this changing weather its hard for everyone to keep up with the snow, ice, rain, and more snow. Walkways are icy!

Yesterday was very sunny. Perhaps most of the icy walkways have melted.

message 343: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Linda, be careful. Ice can be treacherous. The cleats are a good idea.

message 344: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments We have over foot of new snow here and it's still coming down. This is one of the worst snow storms of the season. It's been very windy as well and the snow has been blown all over the place. Current temp at 9:55AM is 27.9F.

message 345: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Oh, yuck! Good luck to you. It's just cold & crappy here. Started out right at 32 & isn't supposed to get much warmer. No snow, though!

message 346: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Count your blessings, Jim. :)

message 347: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I am!

message 348: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Yesterday we could see the grass by our bird feeder. Then today we received about 21+ inches of snow.

Probably won't see grass again till May.

Its 518pm and the sun is shining through the snow-covered trees. Looks beautiful.

message 349: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Yes, Linda, it's very pretty. At least we don't have to worry about mowing the lawn yet. :)

message 350: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) My honeysuckly & multifloral rose is starting to leaf out. I'm getting ready to take a day off to spray & kill it. The lilies & iris started coming up before anything else, but now some of the daffodils have shot past it & are several inches tall.

I live in the south. Yay!

Actually, I'm hoping we don't get a late freeze that kills it all off. Our frost free date is the KY Derby, the first Saturday in May.
