Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Yes, Jim, there are advantages to living in the south.
The winters in the north are too-o-o-o long.

Nina | 6069 comments spring is coming as I saw my first blooming forsythia bush yesterday. Yeah. nina

message 353: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Oh, wow! We won't see forsythias until May!

message 354: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Nina wrote: "spring is coming as I saw my first blooming forsythia bush yesterday. Yeah. nina"

I thought KS was cold! We have buds on our forsythia, but no blooms yet.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Our local newspaper today says that on last Sun/Mon (yesterday), we had 15.7 inches of snow! That's on top of all the old snow. It's really piled up around here in Glens Falls, NY!

message 356: by Werner (new)

Werner It started to snow heavily here this past Sunday morning, soon after I got up, in what was probably the southern edge of the storm system you folks in New York got, Joy. It came down for much of the day, and I'd guess that we got several inches; I spent an hour in the late afternoon shoveling off our walks and digging out the car. But the temperatures turned warmer both yesterday and today, so virtually all of the snow is already gone.

message 357: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Yes, Werner, that's the big advantage you folks have in VA, KY, and KS. The snow usually doesn't hang around very long.

message 358: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Mar 08, 2011 04:42PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments PS-Werner, this is what happens to your snowmen: (g)

message 359: by Werner (new)

Werner Joy, that was cute! Thanks for sharing that. :-)

message 360: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments KS is both cold and warm so guess the bush was hurried into spring when it was seventy degrees for a few days, Mostly, this next few days will be in the upper fifties;fifty eight on Friday. It should be warm enough to plant pansies in a couple of weeks, I hope..

message 361: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, you ARE thinking spring when you think of pansies! I guess we are all dreaming of spring at this point. It's been a rough winter.

message 362: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Yesterday morning, I had a crust of snow on my car. It snowed like crazy Thursday night, but it was just too warm to stick anywhere except the car. Yuck.

It got clear & up to 50 later in the day, though. Today is starting out at 40 & supposed to get up to 50. Tomorrow we might hit 60. Next weekend they're talking about hitting 70!

message 363: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, don't count your chickens before their hatched. :)

message 364: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Well, it's already over 50 today, so I'm being conservative. Too sloppy out to do much, though.

message 365: by Nina (last edited Mar 12, 2011 08:30AM) (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Hey, you all, KS is no longer cold; at least for this week coming up and yesterday which topped at 68 degrees. The car washes are soooo crowded. Off to a St. Pat's parade today; then tomorrow, a dinner for fifteen which I am hosting; German food; sweet and sour cabbage with smoked sausage, baked beans, potato salad, macaroni salad, Irish soda bread(how did that slip in?) And then dessert; peaches and cream cheesecake, chocolate cupcakes and apple pie. Want to come? nina

message 366: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Mar 12, 2011 08:37AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, where do you get all the energy?! Enjoy your nice weather.

PS-Do YOU do all that cooking and preparing?

message 367: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim wrote: "Well, it's already over 50 today, so I'm being conservative. Too sloppy out to do much, though."

Yes, sloppy is the word. Lots of slush. But I'll take it over the ice. :)

message 368: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments cooking: I am fixing the main dish, the mac salad, the peaches and cream cheesecake and the chocolate cupcakes. Baked beans, pot salad and apple pie are being brought by some of the guests. I suspect they will get them at Costco. OK by me. nina

message 369: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I am suggesting the book, "The History of Love," by Nicole Krauss. My daughter thought it was wonderful and wrote five pages for her book club after reading it. One of my book club members says it is awful. I have not read it; but Amazon reviewers have mostly given it five stars. Have any of you read it and if so, what is your opinion? nina

Nina, you must LOVE to cook. I wish I did.

Nina, here are the links:
The History of Love by Nicole Krauss
I'll check it out and see what I think. Thanks for telling us about it.

I'm also copying this post and am putting it in our ongoing book thread.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Our current temp here in Glens Falls, NY, is 50 degrees F.
Hurray! It's about time.
The sun is shining!

message 373: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We might hit 70 today! I agree, it's time. I'm taking tomorrow off as a late birthday present to myself. (It's actually today.) I need to renew my driver's license & then I'm going to a neighbor's saw mill. I'll definitely buy some fence boards, but hope to pick up some other stuff, too.

It's time to spray in the woods. The honeysuckle is well leafed out & some of the multifloral rose has. I can spray them without killing off the native trees & bushes.

message 374: by Werner (new)

Werner Jim, happy birthday to you! I wish you a very special day, and a full and rewarding year to follow.

message 375: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Thanks, Werner. I'm out of here in about 30 minutes & will then enjoy the day even more, I hope. Last night was nice, too. We (Marg, Erin, Josh & myself) went for a walk around the property & through the woods. It was lovely. All the grass is getting green & some flowers are starting to appear. The long, hard winter really makes me appreciate the spring.

message 376: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Mar 17, 2011 12:09PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Happy Birthday, Jim! Imagine having a birthday on St. Patti's day. Everyone is celebrating with you.

I'm celebrating too because our temp is up to 56! I even sat out in the yard for a few minutes... and looked at the white snow which is still piled up over the ground, except for where Eddie cleared the grass for Romeo.

Yes, the long winter makes the spring more welcome. In Maine they say "if you can't take the winter, you don't deserve the summer." I don't know about that.

Enjoy the rest of your day, Jim, and enjoy your day off tomorrow.

message 377: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Lucky you, born on St. Patrick's Day; gives you two reasons to celebrate. Hope it was happy and memorable. nina

message 378: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments PS it was seventy nine today and I have pansies ready to be planted if it doesn't rain. yeah! nina

message 379: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, you're having a taste of summer!
Enjoy your pansies. I used to have pansies, but after a while gardening was too much like work. Below is a photo of my pansies in 2008:

message 380: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Oh, lovely picture. Thanks for sending it. nina Ps I like the little bunny but one of my friends said just today she was giving up planting pansies as the bunnies wouldn't spare a one.

message 381: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Mar 17, 2011 03:07PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Oh, Nina, that can be such a nuisance! Each summer, something eats up my hosta plants. I suspect a bunny. :) Fortunately, hosta plants tend to return each year because they're perennials.

I think the easiest and cheapest annual to raise is the bigonia. It's colorful and blooms all summer. It can also tolerate neglect in case you forget to water it. :) So it doesn't demand as much TLC as flowers like impatiens which tend to wilt if you forget to water them.

Here are the bigonias we had in 2002:

The little old elf LOVES to read. (lol)

message 382: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I love begonias because of their never fail promise, no matter the weather.

message 385: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It hit 71. I planted over a dozen forsythias that I started from pieces I cut off the mature plants last fall.

It's real tough getting forsythias to root: cut off, dip in a bit of Root Tone, stick in a 5 gal bucket with 10" of play sand & water. Ignore for 4 months. I didn't even bring the buckets in, but left them at the edge of the shop overhang all winter. They're budding up & getting flowers.

I left a couple of long branches attached that I just roughed a bit & buried. They'll grow a new bush more surely & faster than the rooted branches since they have the main plant to feed them. I started a few last year both ways. I love working with pretty weeds. They don't take a lot of care.
;-)

message 386: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments How nice to see 71 degrees, Jim. I've always loved forsythias because they signal the beginning of spring. We see bright yellow bushes wherever we go. So cheery.

Nice that your rooting has succeeded. I never tried that. My aunt used to "force" forsythia cuttings to bloom by taking them indoors in early spring and putting them in a vase of water. The flowers would burst forth once they were indoors.

I used to confuse the word forsythia with the word hyacinth. I finally remembered by thinking of the word "force" and associating it with forsythias. It was a kind of mnemonic for me.

When we first bought forsythia bushes for our yard, we bought them at two different nurseries. Turns out that they were different varieties and one bush has more golden-yellow flowers while the other has the paler yellow flowers. It's a slight difference, but it's noticable when the bushes are next to each other. It's a bit annoying. :) I think one blooms a bit earlier than the other, but almost at the same time.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It's snowing here AGAIN! About 3 inches is expected here in Glens Falls, NY, and more is expected further north.

Current temp at 10:47 AM is 34 degrees. I thought we were finished with snow! A-a-a-rgh!

message 388: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Oh, that's terrible, Joy. I won't tell you about the 70+ degree day we're supposed to have today, then.
;-)

message 390: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I HATE TO COMPLAIN BUT i WAS SO WARM AFTER MY WALK TODAY i WISHED IT WAS TEN DEGREES COOLER/CAN'T BELIEVE EIGHTY DEGREES IN mARCH. I HOPE WE DON'T GET ALL THIS WARM WEATHER AND OUT COMES EVERY BLOOM AND THEN HERE COMES A LATE FREEZE. IT HAS HAPPENED BEFORE.NINA

message 391: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I mowed the yard for the first time last night. I'm not sure I've ever mowed in March before. (Probably should have, but didn't.) Gorgeous weather & so nice after the hard winter we've had.

Sorry, Joy. Am I rubbing salt in the wound?
;-)

message 392: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments That's OK, Jim, I can take it. :) This summer, when I'm enjoying the wonderful Adirondack weather, I'll think of you in the southern heat. :)

Nina, it's hard for me to imagine 80 degrees at this point. We have a gray day with snow on the ground. The temp is 42.6 at 12:18 PM.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Geez, I just looked out the window and saw big snowflakes. Its April 4th!!!

message 394: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Apr 04, 2011 10:48AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Linda, right now there's no precipitation here in GF, but it's cloudy.

I heard on TV earlier today that there are terrible storms going on right now in the states southwest of NY. I wonder if Nina, Jim, or Werner are getting any of that current bad weather. I also heard that the storms are heading eastward. I'll have to check our weather reports. Fingers crossed!

message 395: by Werner (new)

Werner It's been very beautiful here for most of the day --actually summer-like, warm and sunny, with temperatures in the 80s. (A welcome change from last week, when the weather was quite cold and blustery for the most part.) But I notice that right now, the sky seems to be darkening and clouding over considerably.

message 396: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Thanks, Werner. Glad to hear you're enjoying such good weather. Hope it continues for you.

message 397: by Werner (new)

Werner Thanks, Joy. The weather forecast predicts it will continue through the week --but you can't always go by that. :-)

message 398: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments I'm still waiting for Spring. As Joy said, its hard to imagine 80 degrees when we are in 40 degree weather - with rain and snow showers. We just have to be patient and wait. Hmmmmm. Think I'm losing my patience!! :)

Linda, I lost mine a long time ago. :)

message 400: by Werner (new)

Werner It's turned overcast, chilly and rainy here, too, and we had some snow coming down when I got up this morning; we've had the space heaters running. This is another case where "summer's lease hath all too short a date." :-)
