Nina, let me know if you receive a notification for this message. Perhaps there haven't been too many notifications sent out for this group lately. Things usually do slow down when the weather gets nice and people get involved in outdoor pursuits.

I had said that I wouldn't be getting flowers this year. Well, I take that back. We bought some wax begonias flats and have placed them in several pots on our deck and in our yard. We also have a couple of geraniums and three hanging impatiens. I just couldn't resist having flowers around.

My sister came to visit for 3 nights this week and she helped us do the potting of the plants. We shopped together and had a lot of fun being silly and laughing until we hurt. The town is doing curbside pickups and we stopped on the road 3 times to pick up stuff folks were discarding: a perfectly good life-preserver, a big blow-up float toy (like new), and a couple of huge clay pots as well as some wire tomato plant holders. You should have seen us trying to stuff the huge blow-up float into the back of the car. My sister took it home today to her grandson for his pool. She says she'll be back for a visit in July. I can't wait!

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, I received your message. Thank you for answering. You are always a help I can depend on. Sounds like a lot of fun with your sister; as I am an only child I can only envy you. However, I do have four daughters and they have the kind of fun you describe with each other; always laughing about something. And they too, love getting a bargain. My daughter recently got a very nice black end table from Salvation Army for three dollars and a pair of pants from Banana Republic for five dollars. Her bargains for the week. Enjoy your flowers. nina

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We got 5/8" of rain today! Yay!

Nina, I'm glad to hear that you are receiving notifications. Yes, having a sister is fun but having four daughters sounds just as nice!

That's great, Jim. Hope it keeps up so that you catch up to "normal".

I had to move my hanging impatiens out of the sun. The sun was burning their petals. My sister warned me this would happen!

"Hot, sunny and smoky"!

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Arnie - That's a shame! Hope things clear up soon down there.

Nina | 6069 comments Joy. You will think I am crazy but when my impatients got too much sun, the ones that were in the ground, I covered them with umbrellas. It worked. nina

Nina, what a great idea! I think I'll try that. I had moved one of the impatiens out front but now I think I'll move it to the sunny deck in the back again. I'll protect it with an umbrella on sunny days. I like watching the hummingbirds out on the deck.

The other impatiens is now on the table under the table umbrella. So it's protected. But we need the space on the table. Hmmm, maybe I'll put it on the table with the other impatiens and move it when we want to eat there. We have one table with an umbrella and one without. We like seeing the sky.

message 560: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, I removed the umbrellas in the evening after the sun was setting but they seemed to really appreciate the shade instead of wilting with heat from sun bearing down on them. I found if I water them early in the morning and then let them dry and when it starts getting hot and the sun reaches them I pop up the umbrellas and give the impatients a respite.

Mary JL (maryjl) | 527 comments Here in Omaha, Nebraska we had a Tornado Watch and a Flash Flood Warning (both!) last night.

The Missouri River continues to flood in certain areas; they are getting sandbags ready in east Omaha. Council Bluffs, Iowa---just across the river from downtown Omaha--is much worse off and homes are threatened with flooding.

And more rain is predicted for this week!

message 562: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Stay safe, Mary JL.

Louisville had 30,000 people without power on Father's Day while we just got 1/2" of rain & no real problems. The power on flickered once. It's amazing what a difference 30 miles makes.

I had scheduled to replace my back door tomorrow, but it's supposed to rain again, so we're putting it off to Thursday. I'm not sorry about that at all. After 3 weeks with nary a drop, the fields really need it.

Mary JL, you've had your share of bad weather! Hope things will get better.

Here at Lake George it's cloudy today and we expect rain but the previous several days have been absolutely beautiful... sunny and mild with temps in the 70s and low 80s. Just right for enjoying setting up my flower pots and preparing things for the coming summer season. Had fun hosing down the garden furniture and cleaning old flower pots. The cold water from the hose felt good when it splashed on me. Simple pleasures...

message 564: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, I feel that way too when I water my garden each morning after I survey it, carrying my tea along with me. I pour the last of it in my azalea bushes. I just planted a lovely coreopsis plant yesterday. My impatients are blooming their little heads off. Are you familiar with the solar butterfly lawn ornament? It is so pretty. You can get a hummingbird or butterfly or dragon fly at a Tru-Value hardward store. After six hours of sun they turn red, blue and green at dark. Not expensive. I will send you a picture of mine in daytime by emai. nina

message 565: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I LOVE coreopsis flowers. The bright yellow is so pretty. Best thing about them is that they're perennials and return every year. Not only that but they bloom throughout the summer! We planted some years ago but our clay soil doesn't let anything grow.

The butterfly ornament sounds intriguing. Nowadays with solar cells, they're coming out with all sorts of novelties. We have a string of tiny colored lights on our deck, powered by a solar cell. I love getting all that light and color without plugging in any wires!

I bought a few mini-solar lights for our sons campsites this year. Just poke them in the ground. They were only $1.50 each at Walmarts. The pole part has red and white stripes. Fun for the kids. Keep the lights in the sun during the day... put them on the path to the outhouse during the night.

message 566: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, the ornament also comes as a hummingbird and dragon fly. The hummingbird looks great in my neighbors potted plant. Looks like it is hovering. and I love the explanation of the portmanteau. What fun to read the derivations. I bet I spelled that wrong.nina

message 567: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments You spelled in right, Nina.

If I find the solar-cell ornaments I'll let you know. Thanks.

message 568: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Yesterday, we were supposed to replace my back door. A friend, Harry, was going to help me, but we put it off until today because the weather was supposed to be bad. It was fine all day & then last night we had terrific storms. I guess you saw on the news that Church Hill Downs is closed since 9 barns & a steeple were hit by a tornado. We didn't get hit by one, but did get 1.5" of rain last night.

It was thundering & raining when I woke up at 4:30 this morning & I almost went into work, but hoped it would end. It did about 30 minutes later & became a nice day.

About 6am, a neighbor's mule paid us a visit. Speedy freaked out & broke out of his paddock, so I had to go out & fix that. It wasn't a huge problem, but was one more thing I didn't need. Then I caught the mule & tied it up until the neighbor could get here. I would have walked her back down to his place, just like we used to do when his little Quarter horse got loose, but that stupid mule didn't lead for spit. Doug got here & grabbed her just about the time Harry showed up to do the door. Interesting morning....

message 569: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I'm ashamed to say that I missed the news about the tornado at Church Hill Downs. I really should pay more attention to what's happening in the world.

We've had lots of rain here lately. We've had some real downpours. I hope it doesn't affect my flower pots. The big blossoms on the geraniums are weighted down with the rain. I tried keeping our impatiens and the Gerber daisy on a table under the protection of our sun umbrella. Hope it helped.

A critter got into two of our large flower containers in the yard. Seems as if he actually ATE the tops off our begonias and dug up the baby plants. One of the little plants was on the ground outside of the container, roots and all. We suspect a chipmunk. This is a first for us. I've seen our hostas get eaten but not our begonias.

Our problems should always be as small as this.

message 570: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments PS-I will keep you posted on the recovery of our battered begonias.

message 571: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) You don't think bunnies ate the begonias? I always suspect them first. They're terrible nibblers & chew up my crocus, peppers & all sorts of plants. Put some mothballs around the base of them - not touching the plant, though. They're a good source of nitrogen & the smell will keep any critters away. That's how I saved my plants this year. Several were eaten down to about nothing, but did fine. I usually only have to put them down once every month or 6 weeks.

I don't know why you should feel bad about not knowing about Church Hill Downs. I rarely keep up with the news because all they seem to mention is the bad stuff & most of it is hype, anyway. To hear the news tell it, kidnappings & murders are common occurrences & getting worse. In reality, their numbers are dropping. We just hear about them more. Besides, there isn't a lick I can do about most of the stuff going on around the world.

It looks as if we're in for some nice days for a while. Maybe I'll actually finish weedeating the paths in the woods. I got most of them done, but haven't made it out there to finish up. It's driving me nuts. It's either been too wet or too hot when I've had the time.

message 572: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Yes, Joy, having your begonias be someone's breakfast is not the worst thing; but, still it's depressing to see your work go to ruin. We spray our hibiscus with bunny proof and that seems to keep them away. I don't know about chipmunks though. Feel like giving up? nina

message 573: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments No, Nina, I won't give up on the flowers. I might take Jim's advice about the moth balls. I just hope some dogs don't eat them and get sick.

Jim, we do have rabbits (even though I haven't seen any lately). So it could have been a rabbit who did the deed.

As for the news, I too get tired of hearing only bad news. I love the line from "The Wiz": "Don't nobody bring me no bad news!" Here it is on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cB9nm-...

Lyrics are by Charlie Smalls (1978):

"If we're going to be buddies
Better bone up on the rules
'Cause don't nobody bring me no bad news..."

"...If you're gonna bring me something
Bring me, something I can use
But don't you bring me no bad news..."

message 574: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Good lyrics and I agree totally. Isn't it refreshing when you read something really good that is happening. Let's have more of that. Evening news is almost always gloom and doom; but once in a while they have an uplifting story of someone doing great things for others.

message 575: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Jun 25, 2011 06:30PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments So true, Nina. It seems that in today's world, our interests are becoming extremely fragmented. We're deluged with so many different things going on, in so many different directions, in real life and also online. It's impossible to keep up with all of them. So we have to try to focus on the ones which are most important to us. Otherwise we risk becoming overwhelmed.

Today we had all kind of weather, all in one day! Sun, then rain, then sun again, then rain again. The potted flowers are being over-watered. I have to keep a good watch on the more fragile ones. I keep moving my Gerber daisy in and out of the rain and the sun. Same with the impatiens. Thank goodness for wax begonias. Nothing bothers them... except critters.

Here at Lake George we have a favorite expression: "If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes! It'll change!" :)

message 576: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Speaking of critters; as you probably have heard about the devastating tornado in Joplin, MO(about 120 miles from us.) There was a story on the evening news tonight about the plight of the orphan dogs and cats; their owners were killed in the storm. Now, they have been gathered up and Sunday they had an adoption day. People came from AZ, KY, Maryland and of course closer by. It was so heartwarming to see the connection of the poor bewildered pets being hungged and taken to the people's hearts and one lady actually found her own cat. I turned off the TV with a big smile on my face. A perfect ending, I'd say.

message 577: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Jun 26, 2011 06:31AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, that's a heart-warming story. My heart goes out to those poor pets. Eddie and I get so much enjoyment out of our little Maltese dog, Romeo. I can't believe he's going to be six years old in October. He was only 10 months old when we bought him, via the Internet. We were missing our other Maltese, jorji, who had died a few months earlier in 2006 at the age of 17. So I looked for a breeder online. That was on a Friday. On Saturday we made the deal and on Sunday we drove downstate to get him. It all happened so fast. Seems he was meant for us!

Here's a clickable thumbnail of Romeo:

This pic was taken soon after we got him.

Here he is in his crate:

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Weird weather today. It started out pretty hot & then got really humid about 10am. At noon, it was 96. I'd just finished the locker on the back porch & got everything put away. I came in dripping with sweat, ate lunch & took a nap.

Then, about 2pm, a thunderstorm rolled in. The temperature dropped to 77 in about 10 minutes! We got 1/8" of rain in about 15 minutes & the power went out. Since I have an UPS attached to the TV, we finished watching our show & then we both went out & mowed. I did the fields on the big tractor while Marg mowed the lawn on the little tractor.

The power came back on sometime before 5pm & the temperature went back up to 85 with clear, sunny skies.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, that sounds like "Lake George" weather. Very changeable!

We had a cloudy July 3 here but the rain was light. We gathered to eat inside a screen house on our son's deck. It was fun. Then we watched the neighbors' fireworks from our son's dock (not on Lake George). I've never seen so many fireworks which lasted so long. It was overkill. But it was fun being with the family. We celebrated Eddie's 78th birthday - oops - 79th birthday. I just can't keep up with the years!

message 581: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Happy birthday to Eddie!

We had fireworks all around us, none too close, though. I didn't bother watching them this year. I was too tired & just went to bed about the time they started - 10pm. Living on the very western edge of the Eastern time zone, it doesn't get dark until very late.

For the purpose of this research I have a short (15 minute) survey providing respondents with some excerpts in two translation versions and all I need it to get to know which suits the reader more. I really need your help with that as I have to collect almost 80 copies... If anyone is willing to help me, let me know and I will provide you with either a link to the survey, mail or I will copy paste it as a message here.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's 84 here in Louisville with a dew point of 80. Humid!!! Poor Marg walked out on the deck last night & her glasses fogged up. I couldn't put the AC on in the car because the windshield would fog at the slightest touch of cooler air.

Jim, I don't know how I missed this post. We had a spell of humid weather here last week too. It's drier this week. However, I find that, since we put up our little inflated 8 ft. diameter pool, I enjoy the hot, humid weather. It's ideal for enjoying the water. I don't get chilled as fast as I do when the air is dry.

They say that in Arizona and New Mexico, even though the temps are over 100, you might feel chilly when you come out of the pool because of the fast evaporation of the water from your skin. It was a revelation to me when I heard this.

message 587: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Well, it's mid-September and we're starting to get a taste of chilly weather. Temps went down into the 40s last night. I think I read 49 degrees on our outdoor thermometer early this morning. It must have been even cooler than that. I notice that Eddie put on a fleece jacket when he went out to get the newspaper and walk the dog this morning. Usually, he's pretty brave and goes outside in his shirtsleeves. If Eddie wears a fleece jacket, it means it's REALLY chilly!

Anyway... On today's radio weather report, I heard something similar to following:
===============================
"There's a chill [da-da-da-da]
In every month that has an r."
===============================
I couldn't find the saying online.
Has anyone knowledge of this saying?

message 588: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We hit the upper 40's last night, too. It really feels chilly since it was in the 90's just last week.

message 589: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Yes, this is the crazy time of year when we need to keep all our clothes for the different seasons handy. We go from hot to cold.

Eddie says there's a "freeze warning" for tonight. So I'll have to take in all my potted plants. Fortunately, I gave many of them to our son to put on his porch downstate. He's just starting to take an interest in plants. So I gave him some nice adult begonia plants in full bloom. They're the easiest to care for. Hope they're still living. LOL

Right now, the sun is shining brightly and the temp is 54.

message 590: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Our September beats all. It was ninety degrees on Monday; today was fifty seven, twenty two degrees below normal. That is our November weather; eighty degrees on this coming Monday. Phew. A roller coaster, for sure.

message 591: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Sep 17, 2011 06:18AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, that surely IS a roller coaster of weather. The freeze they predicted didn't hit us last night, but I took my plants inside anyway, as a precaution. This morning I put them out again.

A week or so ago, I took one of my verbena flowerpots in and put it in a sunny window. It's thriving, with plenty of buds! The one I left outside wasn't doing as well so today I put that one in a sunny window too. It will be fun to watch its progress. Practically everyday their soil is dry and they need watering. Thirsty plants! And everyday, I deadhead the plants. I keep close watch on them. What a wonderful hobbby!

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments We have snow here! It's the first snowfall of the season. It's a wet snow. Current temp is 35 degrees. Just now, I took my Impatiens in from the deck (3 planters). They're in the middle of my living room right now. I thought I'd try to keep them alive for a little longer. I'll put them back out on the deck when the temps get higher.

Hate to see my flowers die. I've already taken in my Verbena and they're doing fine. Also a Geranium which still has some pretty flowers on it. The begonias are out there struggling. Some have died back but several are still OK.

message 595: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments My zinnnias are finally looking straggly; but most of the other flowers are hanging in there; hibiscus still blooming brightly as are the impatients, the petunias, clematis long gone however. Geraniums still lush leaved but no blooms. Gardenia had to be moved inside. My husband and I met accidentally at the USO one Sunday evening; he was eighteen and I, seventeen. I was there as a guest of a friend. He was my friend's boy friend and he invited us to have supper with him. My husband to be was there on a weekend leave from a college about seventy miles from KC. He was in the Navy program for officer's training. I was sitting and watching what was going on in the lobby after eating and he somehow kept bringing me cookies. Not the end of the story; more later.
