Nina | 6069 comments Our weather; possibly frost this evening but sixty eight on Sat and Sun and seventy Monday and Tuesday so mixed but I'll take it. We are in a drought, however, and do need some rain.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Enjoy your mild weather, Nina.

Nina | 6069 comments Still in the sixties and seventy some days but so cool at night had to bring the hibiscus into my solarium. I did plant my asters this afternoon. Hope they will bloom next summer. Also brought in the geraniums. They are in pots in ice cream chairs with no bottoms. They will be in the compost when poinsettas take their place in about six weeks. Doesn't seem possible, does it? My impatients still blooming and begonias so not quite ready to give up. The zinnias are looking straggly and I had hope to pull them up but when I went out to do so there were a mulititude of butterfulies including monarchs so I couldn't do it. I will wait another week looking at the dreadful stems.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments "Sixties and seventy"... music to my ears!

Yes, Nina, the poinsettias aren't too far away, are they. We're already making our Thanksgiving plans with the family. We may gather the family together for a turkey dinner on Saturday, 11/26, instead of Thanksgiving Day because one of our sons has to work on Friday. So we might go out to eat by ourselves on Thanksgiving. I don't mind. I like to eat out and I like to see who else eats out on Thanksgiving!

Werner It snowed heavily here yesterday --our first real snow of the season, except for a fairly heavy dusting of it late last month. Since the daytime temperatures today were above freezing, most (though not all) of it has melted by now; but it was still deep enough this morning that te local schools were on a two-hour delay.

Wow, snow in VA! It's a bit early for that. We had a wet snow last night. I'm glad it wasn't much because we still have to put lights out on our bushes.

Last year the snow came early and prevented a lot of people from doing their outdoor decorating. This year I see quite a bit of outdoor lighting around the houses. I LOVE THE LIGHTS AND COLOR! It's so exciting and satisfying to look at. A big part of the holiday for me.

Bolton Landing (a town north of here) lights up with only white lights. I prefer colored lights but I see more and more people using white lights for outdoor decorating. I think it's because they think that white lights can be left up in January and not look "left-over" from the holidays.

Poor, Werner! Just what you needed. Hey, we lucked out. A friend of mine to the west got snow. you, a friend to the east got snow. We didn't! Yay!!!

message 611: by Werner (new)

Werner Congratulations, Jim; we're happy for you! :-)

message 612: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's going to get cold here now. It was in the 40's today, but supposed to get down close to 20 tonight & not quite hit freezing tomorrow.

Sunny, though. That will be nice.

Nina | 6069 comments I thought "The Snow Walker," movie adapted from Farley Mohawt's book of the same title was an excellent movie.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Stay warm, Jim. Temp here in the wee hours is 24.8F. The water in our birdbath has been frozen for several days now.

Nina, I hope I won't be a snow-walker yet this month. Fortunately we haven't had much snow and people have been able to put their decorative lights outside their homes easily, even though we were chilly doing it. We had tried using decorative solar lights a few days ago but they weren't working well (not enough sun). So we replaced them with "old fashioned" electric bee lights. The solar lights worked better this summer on our deck when the days were longer and sunnier.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Our pipes froze last night. Temps were in the single digits. We forgot to leave a trickle coming from the faucet. That's what we do to prevent frozen pipes. We also keep the lower cabinet door open under the kitchen sink to let the heat get near the pipes. Eddie finally thawed the pipes with a bright light bulb of some sort shining where the pipe comes into the house.

message 616: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) At least it sounds as if nothing burst & that's good news. That's the worst part about frozen pipes, the mess when they thaw.

message 617: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I read there is a lot of snow in Buffallo; are you far enough from there that it doesn't affect you? Hope so. I had lunch with a friend from there who was visiting her daughter who lives here. She heard it was six degrees today in Buffallo and was happy to be walking outside in our sixty degree weather.

message 618: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) 60 this weekend, Nina? That's some ups & downs. I think we're supposed to get into the 50's & that will be welcome. Low teens night before last & never made it to freezing that day, but it is getting warmer, thank goodness.

RedMum Joy H. wrote: "Our pipes froze last night. Temps were in the single digits. We forgot to leave a trickle coming from the faucet. That's what we do to prevent frozen pipes. We also keep the lower cabinet door open..."

So sorry to hear that, Joy. In England it's usually foggy, overcast or weeping (raining to some degree). So glad temps have been in 40;s 50;s.

Nina, we're not near Buffalo, thank goodness. They have rough weather!

message 621: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Not fun, Joy, to have frozen pipes but easy to forget. I seem to forget one thing each day. And somehow I lost my address list after sending out Christmas cards this time. We have a back up on the computer but not my hand written notes of who moved where...LIttle things can screw you up.

message 622: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Yes, RM, England's weather is much milder than the weather we have in our area. I guess it's the Gulf Stream that moderates your weather.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments We have 1 degree F here in Glens Falls, NY at 6:23 AM, Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012.
Tonight they expect it to go down to -5F.

message 624: by RedMum (new)

RedMum Blimey, I don't like cold weather. Stay warm and healthy.

message 625: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments What's your weather today, RedMum?

I prefer warmer weather but I must admit that the colder it gets outside, the cozier it feels inside. And now for my morning cup of coffee!

message 626: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We're up to 20 this morning. Yay! Unfortunately, the dryer is broken. Marg washed a bed spread yesterday & it froze out on the line.

message 627: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Frozen stiff, eh? :)

message 628: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Yes, although it dried it better than I would have thought. I hung it in on the girl's bed. Hopefully it's dry this morning. I guess after I do the bills (which I've been putting off by playing on here) I'll go take apart the 220 outlet for the dryer. That's given us trouble before.

message 629: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Good luck with the drier, Jim.

Oh, around 35-40 and not so bad. Hope you're feeling bettter. Cheers!

message 632: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Not too bad here today; fifty degrees and south wind. Just rescued my suet cage which the squirrels tore out of the tree and ate the suet cake. Grrr. I'm sure they are not starving in this weather. Nor are the birds either. Jim, after your review I ordered "Conn. Yankee in King Arthur's Court," as it was free from Amazon for my Kindle.Mostly I am reading about the Irish setter strapped to you know whose car. Once we had an Irish and when we were about to purchase a Blazer I told the salesman I had to take it home first to see how my dog fit into it. He said it was the first time he ever sold a car to a dog. Scarlet was never on top of it.

message 633: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Well, the dryer is beyond me. The electric to it is fine, so I guess a component went up in it. Drat.

I think you'll enjoy A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, Nina. Fun book, but also kind of scary.

Wonderful quote, Nina! I copied and saved it to my quote collection. At the same time, I found the following in my collection:

"Winter, a lingering season, is a time to gather golden moments, embark upon a sentimental journey, and enjoy every idle hour."

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, will you be buying another drier?

We just bought a new fridge and got rid of the old one which I hated. I'm happy with my new fridge! It's a Kenmore.

Now we'd like to buy a new stove. The old one has an attached microwave above it and the microwave is VERY weak... takes so l-o-n-g. And I don't have a second to waste! LOL So I need a speedy microwave. LOL

message 637: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments It's quotes like that makes me not mind our present season. I really don't unless we have an ice storm or blizzard.

Nina | 6069 comments Nina wrote: "It's quotes like that makes me not mind our present season. I really don't unless we have an ice storm or blizzard." But was in the sixties so didn't seem a bit like winter when I stepped outside. Maybe all our winter will be in February.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Joy H. wrote: "Jim, will you be buying another drier?..."

Eeeek! I hope not!!! This one is just 4 years old & I really can't afford a new one now. Actually, if I have to buy an appliance, a dryer is probably the least expensive. I don't know what you paid for your new fridge, but Marg wants a new one, so I've looked at their cost. Ugh! They start at $1200 or so & easily go over twice that.

One of the problems I have with a lot of new appliances is all the bells & whistles. I do NOT want most of them, but they get forced on me. I don't want filtered water or automatic ice dispensers on the fridge. Tap water is fine & we don't use much ice, so trays are OK. They're just one more thing to maintain & break. Like your stove with a built-in microwave, I'd rather get them separately.

message 640: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Dryer = expensive machine that dries clothes.
Drier = a setting on the machine.
;-)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, below is the link to the exact Kenmore fridge we bought last November at Sears:
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12...
Right now it's selling for $854.99 but our price was $791.99 last November. We also got a discount off of that price. It was a special promotion. See the breakdown below:

Initial Subtotal: $791.99
Tax: $54.87
Delivery Charge: $69.99
Savings promotion discount: $-78.20
Total: $838.65

21.0 cu. ft. Top-Freezer Refrigerator w/ Ice Maker, Bisque
Sold By: Sears
Sears Item # 04672154000
Model #: 7215
KSN #: 3457477

We didn't get the dispenser on the fridge door but we got the ice-maker. The freezer is on top. The fridge is very roomy even though we were limited in the space we had. I like it very much because I can see what's in there. The drawers are see-through.

We ordered it online. Never went to the store to see it. We did all our comparisons with other fridges online and by phone. The sales person on the phone was very helpful in helping us locate (online) what we wanted. We looked at different models (and brands) at different web pages with her help and on our own as well.

BTW, the old stove we have now was there when we bought the house. We never would have gotten a stove with the microwave attached if we had bought it ourselves.

PS-They took away our old fridge at no extra charge.

I wonder who decided on that!
Are there rules for that spelling distinction?

message 643: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Wow! That looks just like what we'd want to get. They have it for $855 online, too. Here:
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12...

I was just looking at the ones they had in the local Sears while waiting for service. I guess they only have high priced ones for some reason.

-------------

I have no idea who decides any rules for English, especially our American version. Seems to me there's as many exceptions as rules & different schools of thought on punctuation & style. Just to keep everyone on their toes, we change it all around occasionally. Worse, we expect everyone to know all of them anyway.

We have over a million words, 4 times as many as most languages, yet we still swipe them from other languages, keep them for centuries, make them up on the fly, & stitch them together in odd ways to create more. We're hoarders, that's what we are. We have no idea what we mean to say, but we sure have a lot of words not to say it properly with!

Silly, but kind of fun, unless you're being graded or learning it as a second language. I have a great deal of respect for people who manage that. I pity them, too.
;-)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Yes, Jim, ours is a difficult language to learn, I guess. As for myself, I call myself a "word junkie". I'm continually trying to improve my use of the language.

Here's a wonderful quote:

Nina | 6069 comments Wonderful quote. I don't think of Eddie Cantor as an intellectual and don't know why. Perhaps because I only remember him when I was a child and I wasn't grown up enough to put that kind of label on him

Nina | 6069 comments Appliances; My Micro is above my 0ven (built-in) and my stove top is also built in but is across the room. When my Micro gave out the first year we moved into the house, we had to buy a new oven as well as the micro which ended up costing three thousand dollars. It would have required a lot of remodeling to do otherwise and would have ended up costing even more. Well, I do like the new appliances, thank goodness.

message 647: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments We had a self-cleaning oven earlier in our marriage but there is none in this house which we moved into later. Well, there is, but it's old and I'm afraid to use it. The door-lining is worn. Those self-cleaning ovens get so hot that they frighten me.

I haven't cleaned an oven in years! LOL

Nina | 6069 comments If I had wings I would swish it your way. I don't know if our weather travels up or down on the way East. All I know is our weather is crazy; it has dropped twenty degrees and is expected to go down to 32 by 11 PM. No wonder I am getting a cold.
