Jim (jimmaclachlan) Yuck! We're not down to frosty temps yet, thank goodness. 40's at night is chilly enough!

Pontalba, I enjoy comparing weather with different members here. You make me want to come to Louisianna. Too bad you're over a thousand miles away! One of our neighbors, who has a summer home here at Lake George, comes from Louisianna. They have relatives in this area who rent out lakefront cottages near us. You should come visit us... in the summer. LOL

Here in S.A. its 23deg.cent. We're supposed to be into summer which is normally very hot, so ja, its a little on the fresh side, overcast and awfully windy. (Our windy months should be in August!!) Guess the weather patterns are changing globally.

Hi Bev. It's great to be talking to someone from South Africa! Wow!

My temp. converter tell me that 23C translates to 73.4F. That's a nice comfortable temperature.

Glens Falls reports 28°F (-2°C) at about 7:00 AM.

It's a bit warmer by the lake. Our thermometer reads 38F (3.3C) at around 8:00 AM. The lake has a moderating effect.

Absolutely Joy... it is a comfortable temp. Forgive me for sounding disgruntled; SA folks are never satisfied unless the sun is blazing and we're sweltering!!!

Bev, I love the warmer weather too. The crisp fall weather is invigorating at times, but it means that winter is coming. So that's a downer. It's a good thing I enjoy Christmas! :)

Excuse my ignorance Joy... does it snow your neck of the woods... there is nothing like a "white" xmas though. My best Xmas ever was in Switzerland a number of years ago and to me... thats Xmas! Here as you know its extremely hot in December so more often than not we have our Xmas dinner (turkey) in the evening (24th)and spend Xmas day at the beach or alongside the pool... braai-vleising for lunch - as we call it.

Too beautiful for words... WOW. Sorry Joy, its an Afrikaans word for barbeque.. direct translation barbeque-meat...here we're inclinded to mix the two languages... as you probably know Afrikaans and English(most commonly used languages)are two of our 11 official languages!! In our school curriculum three language subjects are compulsory... english, afrikaans and any 1 of the other 9 languages.

Bev, thanks for explaining. I can't imagine having eleven official languages. The United States has no official language, but the statistics for the U.S. are: English 82%, Spanish 11% (2000)

Bev, thanks for bringing up this interesting subject. I take English for granted in our section of the U.S. and hardly ever think about the diversity of languages.

Canada's official languages are English and French. Our son moved to Canada and is now fluent in both languages. Sometimes I can't believe that it's my son I'm hearing when he talks to friends on the phone in French.

Bev, in how many languages are you fluent?

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I HATE weather men! Marg is off all this week & I'm going to take 2 days off, make a long weekend so we could take the horses out one day & get other stuff done. We checked the weather & it was supposed to be clear ALL week. So I took Thursday & Friday off.

Last night, they decided we're going to have rain Wed - Sat. Aaargh!

Thanks for those links Joy, I will most certainly take a peek. Oh and French is such a beautiful language... regret never taking it up in school. i speak only three of the eleven... english, afrikaans and zulu. I also speak "phanagalore" (don't think I spelt that correctly.. will check it out) anyhow, its a combination of (probably) no less than the 11 official languages, but is understood by all.In my day (awful aparteid era)our curriculum consisted of compulsory Afrikaans as second language and then as an additional... Latin or French... I took latin. I learnt zulu when I lived in Durban, Natal (the language mainly spoken by our African people in that area)...Needless to say that has all changed, now a choice of one of the nine african languages is compulsory. Talk about diversity of languages... lets not get onto the subject of "traditions"!!!!

Nina | 6069 comments African tradition and languages: I have two granddaughters who live and work in Ghana and because I have so enjoyed, "The Ladies #1 Detective Agency," movie I asked the granddaughters what some of the words used in that movie meant. Their answer was that even though the traditions in Botswana and Ghana are the same the language differs so they couldn't help. These young women lived in Mexico for five of their growing years and then SO. CAlifornia and then Siberia for a few years so they are somewhat fluent in several languages. But, they now speak English with a British accent. They were in LIberia when there was a terrible uprising and children were killed and their bodies were put in front of the US embassey in order to force the US to interfere. It didn't work but they called their father in CA and told him they thought they were being rescued. At that time their uncle was in the army in Germany and he is the one who arranged for a French helicoter to pick them up. He had no idea they were his neices. They were delivered to a French sailing ship which took them to Ghana. They work in hospitals and also do charity work in clinics and help build orphanages. nina

Nina | 6069 comments I thought this article that was in our paper yesterday was worth passing on part of it to our readers: FIND A BOOK AND PASS IT ON. No doubt you've shared a book with a friend. But with a stranger? Different experience. Just ask people involved in "bookcrossing," the practice of leaving books in public places for others to find. Or in the words of bookcrossers, "releasing" books for others to find. A bookcrosser from a suburb near here left a book at an Interstate stop between Kansas City and St. Louis. Two years passed before she heard from the person who had the book, someone in New Zealand. Bookcrossers tag the books they're releasing with an identification number, sort of like a wildlife biologist and register it at www.bookcrossing.com. Those who find the book can then make a journal entry on the Web site reporting their catch and recording their thoughts about the book. They're free to release the book again. There will be a convention in KC at the Plaza the weekend after next and they will be releasing books there. Next stop is Amsterdam and in April in New zealand at Christchurch in case any of you goodreaders live near there. I plan to go "catch" a book. I will let you know if I'm lucky. nina

Right now at about 11:30 AM, it's only 40 degrees. Our begonias are still alive. :) Begonias are the easiest flowers to grow and seem to be the hardiest. They get my vote for lasting the longest under any circumstances, dry, wet, shady, sunny.

There are two kinds of begonias. The following photo shows the kind I'm referring to:
http://picasaweb.google.com/Sea1934/M...
I'm not sure what they are called (as opposed to tuberous begonias).
Does anybody know?

LOL A cool front came through Thursday night, it rained and thundered all night long, and didn't get out of the 60's yesterday. Today was cool and windy and dry. It's about time! We've had nothing but gray and rain for almost 2 weeks.
Only problem with this weather is how the dryness affects my sinuses. ugh. It's 60F right now at 7:30 p.m. I can take this all winter. :)

Joy, those begonias are beautiful. They don't do well for me for some reason though, only lasting one season usually.

That's great, Nina. Every time I think of hibiscus, I think of our wonderful cruise to Bermuda back in the 1990s. It was the only cruise I ever took and the only location outside of Canada and the USA which I've ever been in. I still can't believe I was really there. I loved all the lovely pastel colored houses on the hills and, of course, all the colorful flowers.

Enjoy your nice weather, Jenni. I know absolutely nothing about the weather in Iowa. Are the winters very cold? Do you get much snow? (In fact, I have to admit that before I looked at the map just now, I wasn't even sure about Iowa's exact location!) :)

It would be a good idea to compare the general latitudes of the states represented by our members here. So far I've found the following (south to north):

Louisianna: Lat = 31 degrees, 14.7 minutes North

Kentucky: Lat = 37 degrees, 50.4 minutes North

Kansas: Lat = 39 degrees, 0.7 minutes North

Iowa: Lat = 41 degrees, 52.7 minutes North

New York State: Lat = 43 degrees, 18.0 minutes North

Of course, the latitudes of different locations in each state may vary.

Winters do get quite cold. The last few years we've gotten a lot of snow... but I think that New York gets more than we do. We've already seen snow in Iowa this year! Wow, 70 degrees. It's spring again. :)

Our leaves have turned and peaked already here, but our trees still have lots of lovely color. The air smells crisp.
