Nina | 6069 comments Yes, I met so many nice people there. I am so sad for the parents of those three girls who went off to join ISIS. Actually, I am sorry for the girls too.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It's a sad situation.

message 1353: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The rain is really coming down here. If we needed it, I'd think it was perfect. Since there are still piles of snow alternating with deep mud, I'm not thrilled.
:(

message 1354: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Not a fun day/have to go have a tooth pulled and jaw surgery to remove infection but it is nice to have a day almost seventy degrees so I can take a walk beforehand.

message 1355: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Oh, Nina. I hope the dental procedures aren't too painful for you. Enjoy your 70 degrees!

message 1356: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, at least we don't have mud here. Our ice is slowly melting because we're beginning to see temps above freezing. It's about time!

message 1357: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Good luck, Nina!

message 1358: by Werner (new)

Werner We're thinking of you and wishing you the best, Nina!

message 1359: by Nina (last edited Mar 10, 2015 07:09PM) (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Thanks, not fun hurting but it could be so much worse. Mostly I am trying to stop the bleeding. Strangely, I was told to wet a tea bag and press out the water and put on the injury and keep it there for 30 minutes and if that doesn't work do it with a new tea bag for another 30 minutes. If that doesn't work i am supposed to call them but it's after nine o'clock here so not going to call till morning. Maybe the tea will do the trick. I have been using gauze for most of the afternoon and the tea is supposed to be the last resort. wish me luck.

message 1360: by Werner (new)

Werner Wishing and praying that the tea bags work, Nina!

message 1361: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Hope you're better this morning, Nina.

message 1362: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments How are you doing, Nina? Hope things are better this morning.

message 1363: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I am better. By 11 PM last night and the last of the tea bag usage I stopped the hard, red bleeding and then took some Tylenol and could sleep a bit. I woke at four o'clock feeling not good at all but took a couple more ty's and by 8:30 AM the bleeding stopped and I was better. I thought how fortunate I am to live now as if this was one of my parents or grandparents they might have lost all their teeth from the infection. As it was, no I dnn't need the tooth and thank goodness the subsequent surgery got rid of the infection. Sometimes we take simple things for granted. And what a surprise that the tea worked. thanks for your concern.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Glad to hear you're better, Nina.

BTW, take a look at my comment about the film "My Old Lady" at:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

It's at Messages # 179and 180. Jackie commented too.

message 1365: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Yuck. Glad you're better now, Nina.

It was a raw day until noon & then the day bloomed into a great one. The sun came out, the temp shot up 20 degrees & it was spring. I put out my "Do Not Mow" signs on the road gardens. Quite a few of the bulbs I planted last fall are showing!!!

I went for a short ride on Chip. I spent more time getting mud & shedding hair off than riding, I think. It's gorgeous out - 60 - but way too muddy. Even walking was rough for poor Chipper. Slippery & deep.

I just heard that we can look forward to another 1.5" to 2" of rain starting tomorrow & going into Saturday morning.

message 1366: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Hope your bulbs will bloom soon, Jim. They'll have to fight their way through the mud, I guess. What kind of bulbs did you plant?

message 1367: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments It's not spring yet according to the calendar but it was spring in KS today with 77 degree temp. Hope it makes it's way east to KY and even NY. soon...

message 1368: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Wow! 77 degrees! That's amazing, Nina!

message 1369: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) 77!!! We were sweating in 60 degree weather. 77 is too hot!

Joy, I planted the following:
DAFFODILS FOR NATURALIZING MIXTURE
GRECIAN WINDFLOWERS
CREAM OF THE CROP TULIP MIXTURE SUPER
DISCOVERY DUTCH IRIS
MOUNTAIN BELLS MIXTURE
BEAUTY DUTCH IRIS MIXTURE
LILY TREE MIXTURE

I copied those out of the email confirmation & it didn't have any quantities, but they added up to almost 500 bulbs, if I remember correctly. There were only a few of the Lily Trees & it will be a while before they come up. Right now, it's the daffodils that are starting to show. I've never had Grecian windflowers nor Mountain Belles before. Both are pretty small & planted on banks that were full of grass the year before last. It might be tough to see them at first this year.

message 1370: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments That's quite a list, Jim. I've never heard of Grecian Wildflowers. Here's a link to their images:
https://www.google.com/search?q=greci...
You're in for a treat! They're very pretty.

Here's the link for Mountain Bells images: https://www.google.com/search?q=mount...

message 1371: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'd never heard of them either, Joy. They look pretty & I'm hoping they'll spread, but I did look them all up to make sure they weren't invasives. That's always a danger with these plant catalogs.

I made that mistake with a type of huckleberry & am still paying for it. Turned out there are a couple of types. I thought I was getting a bush similar to a blueberry bush, but it turned out to be an annual that was invasive & didn't have good tasting berries.
:(

message 1372: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Live and learn, Jim! I understand that the peppermint plant can be invasive. But it's good in iced tea, a nice garnish too for the tea. Always smells so good.

message 1373: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I don't know anything about huckleberry bushes but guess they are quite popular in the Nothwest as everything there that's eaten with a huckleberries is delicious/jam, milkshares, pancakes, syrup etc. Makes my mouth water just thinking of them.

message 1374: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments The only huckleberry I've ever heard of is in the title: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn :)

Here's a link to pics of the huckleberry bush:
https://www.google.com/search?q=huckl...
My mouth is watering.

My sister loves to pick blueberries. That's the last thing I'd want to do. Of course, I'll eat 'em! :)

message 1375: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments PS-My son says that "Huckleberry's" is a restaurant chain. http://huckleberrys.org/
Looks like they're only in CA: http://huckleberrys.org/locations.php

message 1376: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I looked up the locations. None too close to my CA descendents. It would be fun to try the restaurant out and wonder how they came up with that name/like does it really have enythng to do with the berry.

message 1377: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It's a good name for a restaurant.

That's the problem with common names. The fruit looks the same, but they're completely different types of plants. Bush huckleberries are very similar to blueberries. They're the state fruit of Idaho & in the family Ericaceae, genus Vaccinium and Gaylussacia.

Annual or garden huckleberries are in the Solanaceae family, Solanum genus, same as tomatoes & potatoes. I expect most taste better than the variety I bought.

If, like me, you have trouble with taxonomic classifications, the steps are: kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. For instance, horses & donkeys are both in the Equus genus, but are different species. That gives you some idea of how far apart these huckleberries are since they're not even in the same genus.

message 1379: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Gee, I never expected to get a lesson on huckleberries! LOL

message 1380: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Sorry if I was pedantic, but it shocked & taught me not to trust seed catalogs. I hope no one else has to learn the lesson the way I did. We had none in the area until I bought them & last year, 5 years later, I still found one growing along the south fence where some bird pooped out a seed. Ugh.

The weather was great today. Not quite as warm, but windier & sunny so it dried up the ground an amazing amount. It was enough for me to get the Purple Martin houses & a dozen bales of hay out of the big barn. Disaster of no hay in the horse barn averted.

I only put up one Martin house because it was so windy & I had too much help. Buttercup on top of they hay, Rosie dodging around inside, Indy & Chip off loading the hay as they taste tested it. Speedy was the only helpful one. He kept Pip amused.

They're now saying the rain will start early tomorrow morning, but we can expect it to go into mid Saturday & give us 2" to 3". Yuck.

Nina | 6069 comments We set a record today with our 84 degrees temp. Last record was 185 years ago. Tomorrow back to normal temps for this month/in the fifties.

message 1392: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Wow, Nina, that's quite a record!

message 1393: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Wow! That's too hot, too fast. Chip was sweating last night just walking around & we were in the low 60's. The horses are shedding, but still have a lot of extra fur.

message 1394: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments It"s back to normal now in the fifties and we're hoping for rain. Send us some of yours. We do have daffies blooming so looks a bit like spring.

message 1395: by Nina (last edited Mar 21, 2015 01:57PM) (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Perfect weather for working outside today/in the seventies. Probably won't last but we did get new liners for the hanging baskets and potting soil in them awaitng pansies on sale. Not easy to find the right size but my husband is cutting and fitting as I write.

message 1396: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments You're way ahead of us season-wise, Nina!

message 1397: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It was gorgeous here today. I got a lot of yard work done, then took a nice ride on Chip. He was feeling good & the ground was soft, so we did a lot of bouncing around. We went over one small jump when he stumbled & recovered with a buck. Fun!

The crocuses are in full bloom & a few of the daffodils are about to start. Tulips & even one batch of peonies are starting to show. The established iris, Japanese iris, & common lilies are starting to show, too.

message 1398: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I'm jealous, Jim. :)

message 1399: by Nina (last edited Mar 22, 2015 11:49AM) (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Our spring isn'tquite as far/no peonies showing but do have tulip trees in full bloom and forsythia and some tulips/seems most are yellow and finally green grass showing through the brown spots. i am getting impatient to plant but later in week is a cold front predicted.

message 1400: by Nina (last edited Mar 22, 2015 11:59AM) (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Oh, to be anywhere in the spring is a blessing/KY, England/CA/ID and even Yosemitie when all the violets are blooming or TX with the bluebells. Or how about NY beside your lake, Joy.
