Nina | 6069 comments But in between the worries I find joy in seeing the cloud formation in the mornings and a single new bud in my garden and the lilt of birdsong when I go to get the paper and how grateful to be able to read it. My grendparents might not have been able to do that at my age and except for losing wisdom teeth and one recently at least I don't have false teeth. I am also lucky to have lived long enough for my grandchildren to have memories of me when I'm gone but as I said I even worry if it's going to rain enough for my flowers/

Nina, "Sir" is definitely a sign of old age... either that or a Knighthood! LOL

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments As for worry, all we can do is keep distracting ourselves with whatever interests us.

“The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.” -William James

"The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes of mind." -William James

Easier said than done!

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Joy, your worries over which word to use are valid, but English is so weird. Think about all the other pronunciation & spelling oddities that are far more common. Byte, bite, bight are pronounced the same, but spelling?!!! Or words that are spelled the same, but pronounced differently. 'Wind' the clock, but the 'wind' blows. You can 'read' a book, but I 'read' it yesterday.

Seriously?!!! Weird language. I pity anyone that learns it as a second language. The difference between 'imperceptively' or 'imperceptibly' is certainly a head-scratcher (My browser's spell check likes the latter, says the first in misspelled.) but one of the lesser oddities, IMO.
;)

Thanks, Jim. I agree that's the correct spelling. ("imperceptibly") but I was able to find it spelled "imperceptively" online. Even dictionaries make mistakes. lol

That's a good point, Nina. I remember my old great-grandmother on my father's side. She used to go to the clothes closet, reach up, and get chocolate candy kisses for me from the closet shelf. I remember that the chocolate was stale. That's probably why I remember it. LOL It probably happened only once but it has stayed in my mind for some reason. We called her Nona.

Nina | 6069 comments My grandchildren call me "Nina," and my great grandmother died when I was three years old but I do have the memory of other relatives taking me to see her when she was in her bed in the parlor. I used to call her, "Grandma sick in bed." Can I share a birthday wish from a dear granddaughter who teaches school in Vietnam. "Happy Birthday, Nina/poet/storyteller/queen of letter writing/ I couldn't have asked for a better grandmother/Love you so much/Hope your birthday is magical." Claire

Nina | 6069 comments How about "through" versus "threw?"

Nina, that's a beautiful tribute! You should frame it.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The browser dictionaries are only stocked with the most commonly used words & names, Joy. It varies by program, time, & region. It's one of the hassles of upgrades I have a couple of people that I have to move their Word custom dictionaries when I give them a new computer.

message 1514: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, it must be a lot of work to set up a new computer.

message 1515: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments It is a lot of work. My husband used to do that and and still does if anyone needs him.

message 1516: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Our son ours. He sets up our computers and solves all the problems. :)

message 1517: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I have it down to a science at work. I generally build one, make an image, & transfer that to each machine, so I just spend some time personalizing them. My machines always take longer, but I get the first of a new operating system & have a lot of specialized utilities. It's not unusual for me to takes weeks or months to fully transfer to a new one. Then again, I keep a minimum of 4 PCs at work (each with a different OS, plus a laptop or 2) & 2 at home.

message 1518: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Mind-boggling, Jim!

Nina | 6069 comments If Marge isn't technical she is lucky to have a live- in computer guru.

message 1520: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Marg says she doesn't have to be technical because she can just tell us to do it. She has a Sys Admin for a husband, a Network Engineer for a son, & a daughter who paid part of her way through college teaching other students how to use the computer. Like the captain of a ship, she points & says, "Make it so!" We do!!!
;)

message 1521: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, every family needs a manager! LOL

message 1522: by Nina (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It's like a summer day here! Our temp is 86! I had to put on my summer clothes! I can't believe it! It feels SO good!

message 1524: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments You must be especially grateful for the return of summer after the very cold and long lasting winter you experienced. I think that does make us grateful for the reprieve, don't you? Enjoy!

message 1525: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Believe me, Nina, I am grateful! I feel so much better today!

message 1526: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We got up to 83! Whew! Too hot.

message 1527: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments You too, Jim? It was 86 here but there was a nice breeze.

message 1528: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Perfect weather today and the results from my husband's test is negative/no tumor detected so he is off the hook for surgery for the time being. He could have scar tissue but at his age they understand he is not interested in going under anesthetic. So, after trips to Costco, grocery store, Trader Joe's and a walk it is time to read email.

message 1529: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited May 12, 2015 12:44PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I'm glad to hear the good news about your husband's tests!
We've got rainy weather here. At least it's cooler and more comfortable.

message 1530: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's chilly here today. Since the bit of rain day before yesterday, the temps dropped from the 80's to maybe 70 yesterday. This morning started off at 42.

message 1531: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It's cooler here too. Temp is now 56. It's supposed to go up to around 70. Seventy is good.

message 1532: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I keep hearing from friends in other parts of the country that are worried we are in the midst of tornadoes. I think sometimes the national weather reports gets our location all wrong. They just group us with Texas that is way far from us.

message 1533: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Hope you don't get any tornadoes, Nina!

message 1534: by Mercurialgem (new)

Mercurialgem | 27 comments It's raining in SoCal - loving it. Reading/internet, blanket & coffee.

message 1535: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Mercurialgem, sounds like you're all set! Enjoy!

message 1536: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I, too, am happy it is raining in SO CA as I have six grandsons there. Plus, one son and one granddaughter and three great grandchildren. So let it rain, let it pour.

message 1537: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Wow, Nina, that's quite a family!

message 1538: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Actually, I have another grandson who lives in CA but in the Sacramento area and he has two grandchildren. Yes, quite a family for an only child; six children, 18 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren. I feel blessed.

message 1539: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, you ARE blessed! You have gone forth and multiplied! LOL

message 1540: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, my father too was an only child and my did he love his grandchildren. He too was so appreciative of having them.

message 1541: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I'm sure he was, Nina. Grandchildren can be such a pleasure.

message 1542: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Woke up at 4am this morning to heavy rain. Like yesterday morning, it didn't last long, but we got almost 1/8". It's getting critical here. I have to water even some well established plants. Temps are well into the 80's during the day & dropping into the upper 60's at night, so pretty warm. We have more storm chances today - and we're hoping to get them! - so we closed up the house & turned on the A/C for the first time this year.

message 1543: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Oh, boy! A/C! It REALLY must be hot there! Hope you'll get more needed rain, Jim.

message 1544: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments No AC here but I did get up in the night and turn on the ceiling fan. Hope we send some of our rain your way Jim.

message 1545: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We probably wouldn't have turned it on except the heat & sudden storms make it tough otherwise. Too hot to close up the windows, but the storms sweep up so fast & furiously that even cracked windows have water pouring through. Not that we've gotten a lot of rain, but a few spurts have been real torrents.

message 1546: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Last night five inches of rain. The surrounding green of the grass and trees and bushes is almost blinding. Wish it could stay this way through the summer but it won't.

message 1547: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited May 17, 2015 10:33AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments The grass is growing fast in our backyard. It's hard to keep up! LOL

PS-The leaves are all out, as if they'd never left! Instant spring!

message 1548: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) 5"!!! Wow. We were happy for 7/8". We might get some more over the next couple of days & are keeping our fingers crossed. Nice & sunny this morning.
