Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nice day here too. At least we have sunshine. Temp is 45.

message 1702: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments After way over normal rainfall all summer I am now watering more now than then. We are hoping for much needed rain next week. In spite of that fall is showing off this time. Are you having colored leave yet?

message 1703: by Werner (new)

Werner Here in Appalachian Virginia, this is the peak month for colored leaves. They're quite beautiful right now.

message 1704: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I love VA in the fall. My in-laws live in Massanutten and are surrounded by forest on three sides. Are you familiar with that area?

message 1705: by Werner (new)

Werner Yes, Nina, I am; my wife was born and raised in that general area (Rockingham County). We lived in the area during the first few years of our married life, and still visit there regularly. Barb's actually been to the ski resort once years ago, with friends (before she and I knew each other), although she doesn't ski.

Nina | 6069 comments My very pretty trees lost their leaves already and they weren't the brilliant red in past years. We think it is because we went almost all fall so far with no rain. Tomorrow it is supposed to rain and also it's the first game of the World series here. Perhaps all of you are Met fans. Understandable but still hope they don't beat our Royals.

message 1707: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Temp here is currently 32F. Yes, we're into freezing temps already.

message 1708: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Mostly we are in the sixties and fifties or upper forties at night and today, the first game of the World Series is being played here tonight in the mist.

message 1709: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We've gotten a lot chillier & have more rain. We got just enough for the colors to pop this year. We're a mix of bare trees, color, & still some green ones. For instance, the 3 Cleveland pears out front are 2 green & one turning colors while the Black locusts & plums are bare. We might have hit 70 over the weekend, but last week & this are more 50's. We were down in the upper 20's one night last week, but now mostly upper 30's & 40's. Definitely a changeable point in the year.

message 1710: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Soon we will have to change our clocks when we "fall back" an hour.

message 1711: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We're over 3" of rain so far. Not too chilly. We're in the mid 60's today.

I wish they'd let us fall back & stay there. I hate DST.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim wrote: "... I wish they'd let us fall back & stay there. I hate DST."

It's a pain in the neck! :)

message 1713: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Yeah, Today I got my new tree/redbud. It took three men several hours to get it in place as they had to chop out roots of the old tree beside digging a very deep hole. But, all of a sudden the birds have found a new home. Even as a young child I love the Joyce Kilmer poem..."Only God can make a tree," Isn't nature wonderful!

message 1714: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Hope the tree will thrive, Nina. I'm happy for the birds. :)

message 1715: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments We had rain all day after the tree planting and so were lucky to have it. The birds are also happy to have the new tree as they are now visiting it in droves.

message 1716: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Enjoy the birds, Nina. What kind are they?

message 1717: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Chickadees,a couple of blue jays, sparrows, mourning doves. cardinals, so far.

message 1718: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments A good variety!

message 1719: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Our weather/seventy degrees. My husband outside watering our new tree roots. Otherwise we are celebrting winning the World Series last night. Yippey!

message 1720: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We're supposed to be in the 70's during the day & 50's at night the rest of this week. We got over 4" of rain from that storm with very little runoff. Everything I transplanted is doing wonderfully & I'm slowly getting the gardens cleaned up for the winter.

message 1721: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It was like a spring day today with temps in the 60s! Loved it!

Congrats to the Kansas City Royals, Nina!

message 1723: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Thanks Joy. Can you believe CNBC never even mentioned the World Series or who won. Their news was about pre-schoolers using I-pads among other news. Not even a mention. This would never have happened in years past. .

I saw the announcement in a news crawl on one of the news channels.

message 1725: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I had a nice ride with Marg last night. She rode Speedy. Even though we wanted to & it was a nice day, we didn't do the Hunter Pace at Masterson on Sunday since Indy popped a splint (see this for an explanation:
http://www.thehorse.com/articles/1242...)
so Marg isn't riding him for a month or so. He's not lame or sore, but stressing that will likely lead to a big bump that will tend to get hit & cut up easier. He's not on stall rest since that drives him crazy, so Marg is hoping he'll take it easy out in the field.

Seems like a forlorn hope. Yesterday, he & Chip were bouncing around with the goats like a bunch of wild men. Indy decided to see what Speedy was doing when he strayed away from the rest. There was a thundering herd as Indy led the charge. Chip was right behind him & the 2 much shorter, fat goats were bringing up the rear, their bellies bouncing wildly. Of course the action is always over by the time I get my camera out.

It's gorgeous out right now. The rain softened the ground, the leaves are turning, & the grass is still pretty green. Temps are low 70's during the day, upper 50's at night for this whole week. Perfect weather!!!

message 1726: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Hope Indy will be OK, Jim.

message 1727: by Mercurialgem (new)

Mercurialgem | 27 comments RAINING!!! here in Cali and I just heard thunder - yikes? Now to read or to nap?

message 1728: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nap! LOL

message 1729: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Something to be thankful for even before Thanksgiving.

message 1730: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Nov 04, 2015 09:26AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I'm thankful for this recent mild weather!
Current temp here is around 62F and the sun is shining.

message 1731: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Yesterday was perfect weather for the Royals celebration parade. It was blue skies and seventy degrees as hundred of thousands gathered to give thanks to our heroes in blue. As one columnist wrote this morning, "Instead of others yelling at one another they are now yelling together with each other and hope it lasts."

message 1732: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments A great day for the Royals!

message 1733: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments It's November but it was 68 degrees here today and my perrywinkles, begonias and fern still like summer blooms. I finally threw a geranium in the compost bucket. Probably get a cold front next week sometime. This can't last forever. Just hope when my sons are driving up for Thanksgiving from TX and CA there is no snow on the way here and back home again. Does a mother ever stop worrying?

message 1734: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I'm already worrying about the snow and ice.
These last few mild days have been a wonderful bonus.

message 1735: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Our temps fell last night back into a more normal range for this time of year. I don't think we're supposed to get out of the 50's today.

message 1736: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I think temps will be falling from now on!

message 1737: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Can you believe a robin was in our birdbath today?

message 1738: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Running late, isn't it? Ours are all gone & have been for a while, but we had some hummingbirds coming through a month after most had left, too.

It's 37 now, was 38 when I first got up & we still have another hour or so until dawn, so it will probably drop another degree or two. Pretty dramatic change from the upper 50's a couple of nights ago.

message 1739: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Current temp here is 46.8 F.

message 1740: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Sunny and in the upper sixties and where have all my birdies gone? After a multitude of sparrows, bluejays, five or more morning doves/chickadees, cardinals etc. none appeared at our feeders so far today/Feast or Famine...Hope they show up soon.

message 1741: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, have the birds returned?

message 1742: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Weird weather today. It started out at 35, the coldest we've been in a while, & might get into the 70's, the warmest we've been in a while. Clear & pretty out, though.

message 1743: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments They did return this morning. Yesterday is the first time since I have been feeding birds that an entire day passed with not a single one. Now they are probably hiding or been blown away. There are sixty mile an hour winds blowing down our street. Should have had the predicted rain instead as we are now in a drought.

message 1744: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Our nice day lasted until shortly after lunch when it clouded up & got chilly. It said it was 55 out when I got home, but it sure didn't feel it. We're supposed to get the wind with some rain & cold temps.

Nina, our birds are mostly absent from the feeders now. There's a lot of wild seed for them to eat & many are migrating, too. I see quite a few around the farm, but they're scouring the berries, thistles, & weeds for seed.

message 1745: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Current temp here is 51 F. Cloudy.

message 1746: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The wind is up here. Apparently I have at least one tree down along the fence.
:(

message 1747: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments We had sixty mile an hour wind yesterday but so far no trees down.

message 1748: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I've been thinking of both of you (when hearing the weather reports for your areas), Jim and Nina. Strong winds can really do so much damage.

message 1749: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The tree that came down was an ash killed a few years ago by the Emerald Ash Borer beetle. I have a bunch of them along that section of the fence, so I pulled the staples for the top 2/3 of all the posts along there & just wired it in place. That way when a tree comes down on it, it doesn't mess it up too much. It only took me about an hour to cut it, clean it up, & set the fence to rights. Most of the limbs had already come off it & I just tossed the pieces into a brush pile nearby.

message 1750: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Good job, Jim.
