Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's amazing what a difference a few miles can make, isn't it Katherine? I live 35 miles from where I work & about 500 feet higher. The last 10 miles are country roads, too. If the weather is supposed to improve (like yesterday) I don't mind struggling in to work, but I don't want to get stranded away from the house.

The current forecast for our area sounds really bad, but it's iffy in many ways. As of last night I heard it was going to start tonight or at noon tomorrow. The latest is that it will probably hit around 7am now - 1.5 hours after I'm normally at work. All agree that it will continue into Saturday, but not what form the precipitation will take.

It was supposed to get up 37 today even as late as the weather forecast this morning, but we're still only at 27 in Louisville & Marg said it's closer to 22 at our house, about the normal difference. I'm glad it's staying colder. It will make sure it is snow which is far easier to clean up when it is lying on frozen ground rather than mud.

Nina | 6069 comments Light snow here and freezing rain last night. I saw the bad news about KY on the TV last night and thought of you but perhaps your place in the state will miss the most of it. Hope so. Take care.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Welcome, Katherine. Thanks for posting.
Good luck driving. Hope that ice will disappear soon.

Werner Our predicted blizzard hit this morning, and gave us perhaps three inches of snow; the Mercer County schools (and presumably those in Tazewell County, too) and Mercer Mall are closed, as is Bluefield College. (Of course, I don't work on Friday anyway.) But the snow stopped a couple of hours ago, so it appears that the snowstorm won't be as disastrous as was predicted.

message 1855: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments That's good Werner. I wondered about you. My grandson works in D.C.and am wondering about him. I'll call soon to be sure all is OK.

Glad to hear that, Werner. I feel so bad for the people in the path of the worst of the storm. I'm waiting to see how far it reaches in NYS.

message 1857: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We've been getting a fair amount of very fine snow since 10:30 this morning, but it hasn't amounted to much - maybe a couple of inches. Tough to tell. I guess a lot of it isn't coming out of the sky, but just blowing around. Wicked winds & with the temps in the mid 20's, it feels terribly cold.

Just a little south of us they're getting a lot. A friend who lives less than an hour south of us has 14". I'm still glad I took the day off work. The roads up here must be tricky. We have a lot of fields & banks just past turns. After every snow storm I have to creep along the roads for 10 miles due to sudden drift areas.

I feel really bad for some dog that must be wandering around. It knocked over our bird bath again. That happens frequently when there isn't any available water. I never see it happen, though. I don't want to put out a heated water dish since that draws too many undesirable critters. The birds have access to the ornamental pond in the back yard which I keep heated.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Poor dog.

Werner Thanks, Nina and Joy; and Nina, hope your grandson's okay! After having stopped for awhile around midday, our heavy snowfall resumed by late afternoon, and is still coming down. So it's by no means over yet. :-(

Yes, Nina, please let us know how your grandson is doing in the storm in Washington, DC.

Werner, thanks for the update on your weather. Sounds bad.

message 1861: by Werner (new)

Werner I'll try to keep you posted, Joy.

message 1862: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I'll call him tomorrow. He lives in Winchester and that is about an hour and a half from Harrisonville where they were predicting thrity inches/he works in D.C. but hopefully he took the day off.

message 1863: by Werner (new)

Werner Nina, did you mean Harrisonburg? A sister-in-law of ours from that area phoned us awhile ago, and mentioned that they're predicting possibly as much as 30 inches of snow there.

message 1864: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Weather. I reached my grandson in VA this afternoon. They live in Winchester and his wife told me they are not in a blizzared condition but do have three feet of snow as of four o'clock and hopefully no more, My grandson didn't have to go into work on Friday to D,C. but was able to work at home. That was a relief as he has an hour and a half commute each way. Here our weather is still cold and we still have some ice underneath about an inch or less of snow. Our grass is not covered just a smattering and the weatherman says no more snow as far as he can see. Maybe rain and bit of mix on Monday and by the following weekend can you believe it will reach sixty degrees. YEAH

message 1865: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We only wound up with a couple of inches. I don't know for sure, but I think my family in MD wound up with 2' or more.

message 1866: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Jan 23, 2016 05:19PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments This was a record-breaking storm in NYC. There's currently a travel ban there and also on Long Island. Drivers will get arrested if they are caught on the road. That's how bad it is.

Nina | 6069 comments Now I am wondering about a granddaughter who lives in CT not far from Long Island sound shore.

message 1868: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I haven't heard much about the weather in CT.

message 1869: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) My kids in RI haven't said how much snow they got, but it's a fair amount, I think. I'll ask tomorrow.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I just heard that it's snowing in Boston!

message 1871: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Mom is in a tizzy this morning trying to deal with half a dozen horses. She left their outside stall doors & the paddock gates open & they're stuck that way for now in 2' or more of snow, depending on the drifts. She didn't lose power & said 'the guys' should get to her today. Not sure quite who or how many, but the guy who owns the farm owns a big construction company so I'm sure a crew will descend on the place & get it all plowed & shoveled. In the meantime, she's had to dig out just enough to open doors & get around the place.

My son who lives near her didn't have to work. He used the Gravely with the snow blower attachment to clear his place a few times. He says they're in good shape & never lost power, either.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Good luck to your mom and the horses!

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments NYC had over 2 feet of snow this weekend!

message 1874: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I just spent a cold couple of hours on the tractor. It was 6 degrees out this morning, but warmed up quickly so it was in the low 20's when I went out. I'ts now in the upper 20's. That's still awfully cold on the toes & fingers when driving an open tractor for any length of time. I got the lane all cleared & paths plowed around the barns, to the manure pile & the goats' pen. I also did a few loops around the fields to make it easier to get hay out in them. Then I transferred a dozen bales of hay from one barn to the other. I used the tractor, so could only do 6 bales at a time in the bucket. Not a big deal, but keeps them in hay for most of a week. All in all, a good morning's work.

Nina | 6069 comments What horror stories about freeway I-75 in KY. Are you anywhere near there? So glad you weren't one of those terribly affected.

message 1877: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments In the forties here today. Maybe cooler again tomorrow but predicting sixty degrees next Sunday. Whee. Hope they are right.

message 1878: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Hope your mom and the horses survive this storm with no more mishaps.

Nina | 6069 comments Two feet of snow in NYC must be a record.

Nina | 6069 comments BRRR Jim.

The NYC-2006 snowstorm record beat the NYC-2016 record by less than an inch! The measurements are done in Central Park.

message 1882: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The mess on I-75 is a little over an hour south of me, near where my friend lives that got the 18" of snow. They got hammered down there & points east.

The kids in RI got about a foot.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments People were stranded on the PA Turnpike for more than 24 hours.
http://www.accuweather.com/en/weather...
"First responders were performing driver checks from ATVs to ensure the safety of those stranded. After temperatures dipped into the low teens overnight, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has provided fuel to those that need it so that drivers can continue running heat in their vehicles."

message 1884: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments We are so lucky. Yes, it has been very cold some nights/zero and a bit above that and a thin layer of ice and a bit of snow covering it but it was 48 degrees today and they are predicting sixty degrees next Sunday. I feel sorry for all those stranded people and the ones in N.J. whose homes are flooded. Or on the other side of our state of MO with their floods also. And Jim is lucky to have missed the brunt of it. What is your weather like, Joy? My granddaughter and her children are enjoying the snow in CT as they posted pictures of them sledding. There has not been enough snow here for kids to sled this winter so far.

message 1885: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, we haven't had any kind of precipitation at all here. I've been happy about that. The current temp is 19 degrees.

message 1886: by Werner (new)

Werner Our snow stopped falling around midnight last night; Barb estimates that we got about 15 inches altogether. Temperatures rose above freezing during the day, so the snow started to melt (by no means all of it is melted, though; there's still a LOT of it on the ground!). But no doubt once the sun set, temperatures fell again, so the water that ran off from the melting snow undoubtedly re-froze as black ice.

Services were cancelled this morning at our church, but I did open the library for three hours, until 5:00 p.m. (Only a few students ventured out.) But the administration plans for the college to be open on a normal schedule tomorrow. The Mercer County schools will remain closed, however.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I read that "As of Saturday evening, Glengary, West Virginia, reported the highest snowfall, with 40 inches."
http://fox43.com/2016/01/23/ive-never...
I think I saw on CNN news this morning that Glengary had 43 inches!

PS- Glengary is "located in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia."

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments PPS-Here's a map showing the exact location of Glengary, West Virginia.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glengar...
I never realized that West Virginia had such a funny shape! :)

PPPS-" According to the 2000 census, the Glengary community has a population of 277."

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments PPPS-I guess you might say that the blizzard put Glengary on the map! LOL

Nina | 6069 comments Speaking of weather I have to tell you that last evening we were at a neighbor's home for a going away party and she had one of her French doors open to her patio. Only a screen door was between us and the outdoors and it was pleasant/not even chilly and this is January in KS. But the weatherman warns us winter is not yet over so we'll see what next week brings us. But, really it was a touch of spring we all were grateful for, even if it doesn't last.

Nina, I could use a "touch of spring" right now!
How nice that you were able to experience it.
The current temp here is 30F.

message 1892: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We had a sudden resurgence of spring, too. It hit 60 here today with a stiff breeze. We needed that to dry out the ground. It's soupy. Josh & I loaded the barn up with hay & even in 4WD, we left tire tracks.

message 1893: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Jan 31, 2016 09:16AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments No spring here. 41 degrees. Well, it's better than freezing temps.

message 1894: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Yes, 40 degrees is much better than freezing.

message 1895: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Pride goeth before a fall/ I was so proud that we had the beginning of spring in January and today the wind chill when we went out to the Post Office was 18 degrees with a cold wind blowing the flag almost off the post. Brrr as the old saying goes.

message 1896: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We've been in the 60's the past couple of days. Today it was mid 50's after a storm last night. We got about an inch of rain in 2 hours from midnight to 2am & it was hitting the house so hard it kept waking me up. Today was breezy, but gorgeous. Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny, but with a high of 35! Brrr!

message 1897: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Temp here is 45. Not bad.

message 1898: by Werner (new)

Werner It began to snow heavily here last night, beginning perhaps around 5:00 (I was at work, so wasn't outside, and didn't happen to be watching the windows). We decided not to close the library early, though it was a debatable thing, so stayed open until 10:00, and the city streets were still passable then; but I got an e-mail shortly before that announcing that the college would be closed today. The snow's stopped (for the moment), but the accumulation looks to be about a foot deep; and since our temperatures have been below freezing for several days, it'll probably lay for some time.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Oh, boy, Werner. A foot of snow in Virgina! Be careful driving home!

Nina | 6069 comments Once my CA grandchildren were visiting here when it snowed and after playing in it out in our huge backyard they went next door and asked my daughter if they could borrow her snow as they used all of ours up. So, I am asking Werner, "Can I borrow some of your snow?"
