Jim (jimmaclachlan) The heat here is terrible. We were in the mid 90s yesterday without much breeze which made any work outside plain miserable & it's supposed to be the same today.

The roof of the goat house got a hole in it. It's 7 years old & the plywood got wet, so it went where they jump up on it. I tore all the old roofing & the plywood off yesterday afternoon & replaced it with 1x6 treated wood. The worst part was a nest of ants in it. They kept biting me even after I sprayed them a couple of times. Between them & the heat, it was a miserable job, but I got it all done save for putting more roofing back on.

Somehow I misplaced my roll of rolled roofing & forgot to check before Brandon & I went to the store for the boards yesterday. I was sure I had enough since I checked it a few months ago when we thought we might use it to make a cover for the kids' crawlspace entrance. I probably put it in some 'safe' place, but I'll be darned if I can figure where that is now. Mom & I looked all over for it since she came out to help me at the end.

Then we went around the field & did some fence repairs. Those went well, but we found that all my arbor vitae are getting bag worms. While I mowed the lawn, Mom took a plastic grocery bag & picked off what she could reach. She got half a bag!!! Most of them are down by the kids' house, along the south fence line. I hate spraying with pesticide, but there are too many up high, so I'll have to. Unfortunately, that will kill off all bugs & there are a lot of good bugs in them. As I mow around them, I regularly pick up preying mantis & walking sticks.

We're going to put up Josh & Erin's fence this morning before it gets too hot. Josh & Brandon can handle the ground work while I sit on the tractor, if the rolled fence thing we made for the tractor works well. Cross your fingers. It's too hot to fight today, although we will if we have to. Just hope we don't have to. If it goes well, maybe we'll even get the gates in!!! It would be so nice to finally get this project done.

I am adding this one to my list - like the setting and you mention excellent writing!

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, am I right that you have a son living in Montreal? If so, you should try some of these books. Good description of the setting. The first book is titled, "Still Life." And also the settings are in a small village near the Vermont border.

Nina | 6069 comments My kids worst childhood memories are picking bag worms off the evergreens in front of our house. Mine too. ugg..

Nina, I can download these books from the local library. Yay!

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Weather today is nice yet a bit humid.

message 2008: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Our weather changed 3 times today. At 3am, big storms rolled in & this morning it was in the low 70s with a gentle rain that gave us a 1/2" before stopping about noon. Then it stopped, the humidity was low, & it was upper 70s. About 3pm, it suddenly was back up in the 90s with high humidity.

Sigh.

message 2009: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Last night huge storm/trees down everywhere in the Metro area or large branches and sadly one branch of our small Redbud tree was broken. We really will miss this one as some of our tree branches didn't make it through our dry winter and of course the wind had to take our best full of leaves branch. Then went out to my garden and found that a squirrel or bunny had dug out all the plants in my strawberry jar and nipped off my hibiscus blossoms just ready to bloom. GRRR.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Rain today. Cool temps in high 60's. Think its about 69 right now.
Jim, get cooler by you yet??

message 2012: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Lots of rain here too.

message 2013: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's 10 degrees cooler, mid 80s. Still hot, but a lot better. It was so hot last week that the Purple Martins left 2 or 3 weeks early. They usually leave the first week in August, but left several days ago. I took their houses down. When Mom & I cleaned them, we found one Martin nest with 4 eggs that didn't hatch. I got a bunch of sparrow eggs, too.

We did a great job cleaning them. I've taken to keeping a spray bottle with bleach in it for my shower stall. I spray the stall a bit every 2 or 3 showers & it's stayed super clean, no hint of mold that wanted to grow. I used that on the Martin houses & they look like new.

Mom took off this morning with a friend who used to work with her in MD. MJ lives down here now, so they're going to spend most of the day together & drop Mom off at the airport this afternoon.

Trying to keep Mom amused was exhausting, but got a lot accomplished. We got several gardens well weeded, plus a bunch of other small projects done. Wore me out.

The grandmonster & his mother have taken over my pony, Chip, for the duration. They've been riding him morning & evening. Josh & Erin now have a functional backyard, all fenced in with the gates done. Brandon & I moved the gate from the corner of my field over to the end of J&E's backyard, so all is pretty much done. Finally!

message 2014: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments So will your grandson live next door to you now?

message 2015: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments 26,000 still without power in our metro area; some for days now and huge clean up of downed trees. As I said we lost an important branch of our red bud.

Hope they fix the power soon.

message 2017: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments The huge trees and branches are on the power lines which is making it difficult to get the power back on.

message 2018: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Sorry you lost so many trees & branches around you, Nina. Brandon & family are staying with Josh & Erin while they're down here. We had Mom staying here. They spend most of the day at our house, though. It's nice being able to split it up like this. The couples are getting along very well. They have a lot in common & are close in age.

message 2019: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Enjoy your family, Jim.

message 2020: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Nina, tough losing power and trees. Especially an important branch of your red bud. Is today better?

Muggy this morning. Rained last night.

Soon as I get some food in my belly I'm going to take a sinus tablet in hopes of keeping the sinus allergies at bay!! I was fine yesterday. Keeping my fingers crossed for today.

message 2021: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Rained all night and terrible flooding in places/one in particular as the creek overflooded and the owner's of a restaurant/bar quite popular went to check on it at two in the morning to be certain everything was secure/whoops the water came rushing in as a retaining wall collapsed and they were trapped for five hours and after climbing up on top of the refrigerator the water kept coming higher and they finally were able to take down a ceiling tile and were clinging to rafters when the firemen used a chain saw to break through the roof and rescued them just in time..Sadly, the now owner's brother was walking along a trail near this restaurant a month ago with his dog and he was murdered. Talk about terrible troubles. The restaurant is totaled a wreck. But they are alive.

message 2022: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Wow! That's like a horror movie, Nina.

message 2023: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments It was winter when the visitors were here and they did use up all the snow in our 225 ft yard and then went next door to see if they could borrow some of their snow. At least they were outside and not inside taking apart our doorknobs and registers and anything else they could find. They then hid the parts. NOT much was safe from the two worst culprits/twin grandsons. En route back to their home in CA they managed to take apart part of the van's door and my son was not happy..

message 2024: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Actually, they grew up to be very nice responsible young men..So miracles never cease as the saying goes.

message 2025: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) My oldest boy is a fiddler, so I sympathize with your son, Nina. James would take apart everything & tried all sorts of crazy experiments. He was trying to take apart an alkaline battery once & it squirted into my daughter's eyes. We held her eyes under water & kept squirting them down all the way to the ER where they flushed them with 2 liters of saline. She was fine in a couple of weeks.

Another time he tried to make glass & set his brother on fire - 3d degree burns over his entire forearm. Instead of a long anticipated canoe trip in Wisconsin, he got to stay home with me cleaning his arm twice a day for 2 weeks. He was OK in about a month or so.

Another time I found him making hydrogen gas in the basement of our frame house. Somehow we all survived & he's also a good, successful adult. Wonders never cease.
;)

message 2026: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Your son't early escapades reminded me of our second son's when he was young..Once a neighbor called and said he wouldn't be coming home for quite some time as he and her son had exploded some home made bomb in the basement and black dust was everywhere and they are cleaning the basement as she spoke.

message 2027: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) LOL! I'm so glad my children are grown so I can laugh about these things now.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Yes, lovely day here.

message 2031: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments The past few days here have been perfect/a far cry from last week with ninety nine degree days and high humidity and then nine inches of rain and floods and even two horses swept away and people afraid they were going to drown until the firemen rescued them hanging from the rafters as the water rose.

message 2032: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Reminds all to enjoy the good times and cherish the memory.

message 2034: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Very sad.

Weather is 83 degrees. Some humidity. Ah ha! That's the reason I need a sinus tablet today.

Nice day so far.

message 2035: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Humid yet again.
Thundering out right this minute. Maybe some rain will give us relief of the humidity.

message 2036: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It's 82 degrees here but there's a nice breeze.

message 2037: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments We are setting records here for the coolest August/fifties at night almost unheard of in August. Just had a lovely bouquet of flowers delivered to the door with no idea who the florist is or the sender. No signature on the card. No florist card and a strange message. My husband says, "Hope it is not a bomb."

message 2038: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I don't think it hit 80 here today. We've got the A/C off & a great breeze blowing through the house. Love it, especially after the brutal heat of a couple of weeks ago.

message 2039: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments We're sharing the great weather after sharing some of the bad.

message 2040: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's 54 here this morning! Fall weather in early August. I guess the skunks think it's fall, too. One got Pip last night. Thankfully Marg took care of it since I had gone to bed early, wiped out after a LONG week at work. Since I'm the only IT/phone guy, the week after vacation is spent scrambling to catch up on everything that I missed. Nothing major, just a lot of little things that kept me hopping each day.

message 2041: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Sounds like you need another vacation! LOL

message 2042: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I got a call from a son who is vacationing in Hawaii and the mystery was solved as he told me he sent the flowers as a rememberence of a special day. . A thoughtful son.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Very thoughtful indeed.

message 2044: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments It was a rememberence of a special day.

message 2045: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I can't ever remember wearing a sweater in August in KS but today was the exception.

message 2046: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Overcast today. 78 degrees. Only feels that warm when the sun peeks through the clouds. I'll stay in the shade. :)

message 2047: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Yesterday morning it was 34 & I had to scrape my windshield. There's howling winds out this morning & it's 58. Weird!

message 2048: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Weather/cold at night but in the fifties mostly in daytime and sunny. One day next week will be in the forties and otherwise high fifties some days/fifty four on Thanksgiving. Thank goodness no snow as many are flying in during the week.

message 2049: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Weather is so very unpredictable. Going to be 60 degrees on Tuesday. Mind you I'm not complaining. However when it jumps form 30 to 60 and down to 40's our sinuses sometimes have a hard time to adjust.

Jim, scrape the windshield - oh NO!

message 2050: by Jim (last edited Nov 18, 2017 03:27PM) (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I've had to scrape the windshield several times. Certainly not today, though! We got a high of 63 & I think that's how hard the wind blew at times. Very gusty with a constant wind that made it no fun doing anything outside. It was spitting rain occasionally & finally started to pour not long ago for a while. Temps are supposed to plummet now as the wind, which was coming from SSW is now coming from NW.

Lost a big chunk out of one of Cleveland pears out front. I hooked a chain on it & dragged it out in front of the brush pile in the north field where I cut half a dozen bowl blanks out of the butt. I'll shove it in next time I get the tractor out. The tree doesn't look too bad & I'm sure it will fill in shortly. About 5 years ago, it lost a bigger chunk on the opposite side & you can't see it at all any more.
