Nina | 6069 comments Good neighbor and good father and so far we're up to six degrees and only one inch of snow.

message 2152: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Thanks, but it just makes sense to take an extra 15 or 20 minutes at each place. Makes their lives a lot easier & I've already got everything out. Besides, Josh went into work early, before the snow started. I'm not sure if he'll make it back tonight or not & Erin will likely need to get out to go to work tomorrow morning. Tammy, the neighbor, stayed in town last night & plans to tonight, too. Probably a good idea. Several of the major highways are tied up with wrecks. Salt isn't working well at these temps. We still haven't hit 15 degrees & I doubt we will.

My back is kind of sore. One of the pins broke where it attached the grader blade to an arm of the 3 point hitch & getting it hooked back up was a drag. Everything was just out whack, the blade is a couple hundred pounds, & the footing wasn't the best.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Hope your back will get better, Jim. Sounds like really rough weather. It's 23 degrees here and snow is expected.

message 2154: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Thanks. My back isn't awful now, just a bit sore. We're down to 4 degrees now. It briefly hit 14 today as the high around noon, so I wound up plowing during the warm part of the day. Sheesh!

I wonder how the roads will be in the morning. We're supposed get below 0 tonight. I think Nina used up all the heat before she sent the weather our way.
;)

message 2155: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Supposed to be in the fifties on Friday so I'll try to send better weather your way for the weekend.

message 2156: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Snow, snow and more snow.

message 2157: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Happy to report - the sun is shining brightly. Warm at 30 degrees today. Almost feels like Spring!

Just got back from food shopping. A pleasure without any weather elements. Roads all nice and clear.

Might go out after lunch and move some more snow around. Still have a lot on the back deck.

message 2158: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments My outdoor thermometer reads 43.7 F. Hope some of the ice will melt.

message 2159: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We're getting close to 50, although there is a chill wind so it doesn't feel that warm. Still, all the snow is melting. Yay!

message 2160: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments HURRAY FOR MELTING SNOW AND ICE!

message 2161: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Rained last night but in the fifties today and so far this winter, one inch of snow.

message 2162: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments All the melted water that turned into ice is gone. Relief.

message 2163: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It's good when the ice goes! :)

message 2164: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Did reach over 40 degrees yesterday. In January usually have the village/lake walking areas to oneself. Not yesterday. Many people were out to enjoy the good weather and view the frozen lake. Folks were out ice fishing or just walking across the lake.

Nice day in January!

message 2165: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Today is January 29, Tuesday. Weather is partly cloudy and 21 degrees. Light snow flurries expected. Ugh.

Driveway is still partly icy (we tore at the ice with a hoe, spade and shovel). Husband went out and salted/sanded what he could while walking downhill along the tree-lined driveway.

Trying to hook up with a snow plower - waiting for his call.

message 2166: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Yes, the ice is still with us.

message 2167: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Almost always sunny regardless of the temp. Less than an inch of snow so far this winter. No rain since October. Ice on streets last month for a day. Schools closed that day. Looks like a cold weekend coming. We have such strange weather this winter/ in the fifties and then down to five degrees all in the same week. Still working on water damage but finally the sheet rock up and now painting base boards and might have to replace the carpet. Not a happy new year so far. but could be worse/CA fires or Houston floods so shouldn't complain.

message 2168: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We're cold, but sunny now & above freezing for a while. We were well below the past couple of days, but might get into the low 50s tomorrow. Then it's cold & more snow.

message 2169: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments 27.5 F here.

message 2170: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Got hooked up with a snow removal guy who is very reasonable. We have a 300 foot tree-lined driveway uphill. Sanded yesterday. Makes life much easier.

Today it's cold at 5 degrees at 830am. Sunny. Birds are happy.

Did anyone get to see the special moon? Was too cloudy. Couldn't see.

message 2171: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Currrent temp is 22.6F.
Didn't see the moon.

message 2172: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We didn't have a good view of the moon. Went from mid 40s yesterday down to 13 this morning. Yesterday afternoon, we dropped 10 degrees in 2 hours turning drizzle into snow - big flakes that clumped together as they fell. Most were the size of a quarter, but some would get together & be the size of an orange when they hit. Only an inch stuck since it had been warm.

message 2173: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments The forecast for next Tuesday is for snow/possibly three inches. It is the first time we've had three inches in four years. Might end our snow drought.

message 2174: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments You're lucky that's all the snow your getting. We've had our share. Our yard has been covered with snow for weeks. Current temp at almost midnight here is 6.4 F. Rough winter!

message 2175: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's snowing here now. 33 degrees with a high of 37 today & precipitation of some sort. Likely it will change to a cold rain at some point, but right now it's sticking well since the ground is so cold. We were just in the teens.

Marg missed her riding lesson yesterday because the trailer was frozen up. We worked on it with a torch & hammer for a while. We got everything open, but there's a latch for the top doors on the back that runs vertically, a bar going up through pipes that allow the top & bottom to lock in place. I'd heat it up, we'd move it for a minute, & then it would freeze up again. Tried putting WD40 in it & all, but it kept freezing up. She didn't want to take a chance with it.

I should probably drill the pipes & put a grease zerk into them somewhere near the top. A good layer of grease in there would stop that. I might do it when I take them off for the summer. The downside of that is the rain will spread the grease downward & it will look ugly on the white paint, though.

message 2176: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Snow here today too. Doesn't look like it will amount to much.
Current temp is 31.5 F.

message 2177: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Finally, we got to see snow falling; I think we actually got two inches before the sun came out. Four years since we had three inches of now all together.

message 2178: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Today's snow is piling higher. Makes it hard for the dog when he goes out in the yard.
Current temp: 32 F.

message 2179: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, we're sort of lucky but if we don't get some rain or snow; more than a dusting we'll be in what the weatherman calls a Snow Drought. That is not good for our trees, shrubs etc. It is a big hassle to water here in the winter as with very cold temps to take out the hose and start all over again to prevent freezing etc. we probably just won't do it so we really do need snow. Send us some.

message 2180: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I wish I could send you all of it!

message 2181: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I do remember worrying over the snow/ice in my dog's pads/feet. And the cat complaining about the snow in general and losing my footing and not fun driving. Oh to be young again and enjoying sledding until dark and building forts and snowmen and eating snow ice cream and my husband going tobogganing I think I didn't spell that right. Oh well, you know what I mean. And we never had snow days off school. My mother used to pour water on our cement porch floor and it would freeze and we ice skated on it. Those were the days.

message 2182: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I remember not worrying about & actually enjoying the snow, too. Life's a lot different now, though. I have a 35 mile commute each way & a lot of other responsibilities that make snow no fun.

I have to leave right after lunch for a doctor's appointment, just a check up. I hope the roads are OK, but they should be. This morning might be ugly for the commute. It was 32 when I left the house at 4am with rain. The trees & vehicles were gathering ice, but the roads were just wet. Temps are dropping, though. It could get ugly.

message 2183: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Drive safe, Jim.

message 2184: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Long commute in winter weather no fun. Stay safe, hopefully. And yes, you have a lot of work at your place regardless of the snow etc. so I don't envy you that. Maybe, it will keep you young and you'll live to still fix things when you are my husband's age.; rather than being in a nursing home.

message 2185: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The roads never froze up, thankfully. Our Internet is out at home since the antennas are frozen up with a thick coating of ice. That should clear today, though. We're starting out in the low 20s, but it's supposed to get into the upper 30s by lunch time.

message 2186: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Lots of snow here. Current temp is 12.6 F.

message 2187: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Yuck, although we're supposed to get a lot of rain this weekend. Muddy mess as the ground thaws, too.

message 2188: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments We're up to 22.1 F degrees.

message 2189: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments We have so much snow - not sure where to move it all! Luckily we just hired a snow plow guy - in one week he's been here 3x. We had 14 inches of snow on Sunday. Then another 12 or so on Wednesday.

Still have to shovel around the "walkway" area and the mailbox. At least it was light and fluffy snow.

Birds have food. They are happy.

message 2190: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Do you have any cardinals?

message 2191: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I haven't seen a cardinal lately but I do see one every now and then. So pretty in the snow.

message 2192: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We have quite a few.

message 2193: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments One hungry cardinal was eating at our kitchen window bird feeder and took his time although usually he takes a bite and runs away. With the blue jays and himself it was almost a patriotic morning as they together made it red white and blue.

message 2194: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments A pretty picture.

message 2195: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I'm jealous as my CA friend just wrote to tell me she has a field of daffodils blooming in her yard and snapdragons coming up also. She lives in Northern CA.

message 2196: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments A whole different world!

message 2197: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Nina wrote: "Do you have any cardinals?"

Only spotted the female, not the male.

message 2198: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Icy rain yesterday. Driveway not fit for car or human. Sander coming today to sand driveway. Stuck in house all day yesterday. Todays a better day. Sun is shining brightly.

message 2199: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments 33.3 F. Melt,snow, melt!

message 2200: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Ten degrees tonight; sixty five degrees on Thursday. Dusting of snow Sunday morning and gone by afternoon. So far, three inches in the last four years. Crazy weather and we're now worried if we get no snow or rain will our trees and bushes survive the drought. So you might want to count your blessings even if the snow is a nusaince.
