Jim (jimmaclachlan) It was gorgeous here today, too. Got up around 60, I guess. I saw the first blooming daffodil, too. It was just wonderful being outside even if it is still pretty muddy. Unfortunately, it's supposed to start raining again tonight & do so for the next few days.

message 2252: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Enjoy your daffodils and the good weather, Jim. At least February is almost over.

message 2253: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Rain above us on the map and rain below us and east and west and nary a drop. Less rain in the last four years than one winter four years ago. Or snow; barely any inches in four years.

message 2254: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Not coming in like a lion but I wouldn't say a lamb either; twenty five degrees in the morning and then later up to fifty one. So neither lion nor lamb I'd say.

message 2255: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Riddance is a good feeling.

message 2256: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) That's terrible, Nina. We just had one of the wettest February on record with 10" of rain. Hope you get some soon & not gully washers, either.

message 2257: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Today (Feb. 28) the temp went up to 60 F.
Hope you get some rain, Nina.

message 2258: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's in the 50s this morning with more rain. Poor Nina is drying to a crisp & we're starting to grow fungus. Such is life.

message 2259: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Predicting a tenth of an inch of rain tomorrow night. We'll see; wish it was an inch.

message 2260: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Hope more comes through, Nina. It's still pretty mushy here, but drying up fast in the wind & sun. It was sunny & in the mid 40s yesterday, really nice out. Great day to shuffle hay around, but I didn't get to ride. I did clip the goats' feet. They were way over due. Buttercup had twice as much hoof as Rosie which is typical.

message 2261: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Shall we do a rain dance, Nina? :) Good luck with the prediction.

message 2262: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I'll let you know if I need the dance. Glad you are able to enjoy your day, Jim,

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's been a great day here, a lot better than my family on the East Coast is having. Mom in MD & James in RI have both been without power since Thursday. Soggy ground & really high winds knocked trees down all over so power lines are cut. Brandon, my youngest boy & the one with the grandmonster, is just 20 minutes north of Mom & has a generator, but they only lost power for a day or less.

Mom doesn't have one & there's been no getting down her road.
Maybe today. She has to take the Gator down to a pool to get water for the horses since the farm has a pump. For herself, she's just been filling a jug or two from another farm she can get to by driving across fields for a mile or so, but she still has to haul in a 5 gallon bucket from the stream to flush the toilet. No heat, either.

James has a generator which has his heat & Internet working plus a few lights. He's able to switch the refrigerator on to the circuit occasionally to keep the food cold. Internet is a priority for them since Lauren runs an in-house dog boarding facility & has to communicate with clients. Their phone runs on the Internet through servers that James built out of old iPhones with busted screens. James is a software engineer & programmer who works remotely. Anyway, they're doing fine & have no idea when they'll get power back.

message 2264: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Sorry for your mother but does she ever seem resourceful. Hope she gets power sooner than later.

message 2265: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Hope their power returns soon.

message 2266: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) James says their power came back on, so now it's just Mom. I have a feeling this is the last time it will happen to her. The farm she manages is owned by a rich guy who is a contractor. I'm sure he's going to get an earful over this mess & will be installing whole 'house' generating systems on the place now.

message 2267: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Thank goodness for generators!

message 2268: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments This makes you feel for the Puerto Ricans.

message 2269: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It certainly does!

message 2270: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Just talked to Mom, still no power. The linemen were coming up her street, got to the county line which is just 1/4 mile away, & quit. Sigh.

message 2271: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Hope things improve, Jim.

message 2272: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Frustrating is the word I'd use in your mother's case.

message 2273: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Hope your mom has power by this time.

message 2274: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) She does. To answer your question in the reading topic, I had an inch of crusty snow on my car yesterday morning, but it didn't stick about 10 miles away. Just up here where we got down to 27 while the rest were just at 32 or so.

I drove through quite a bit of snow this morning, but none of it stuck. Again, we were just at or a hair above the freezing mark. It's snowing lightly right now, too. So far, not enough to stick nor quite cold enough.

Good to hear you Mom has electricity once again.

message 2276: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments I feel like all I'm doing is shoveling!

Shoveled another 6 inches this morning. My job is to shovel off the Bilco door so we can access from basement if necessary. First must shovel the area in front of the shed so my husband can get the snow tractor out.

Then I go and shovel front and back steps and get some snow off the back deck. Way too much snow to clear it all off.

As I posted on another topic - Where is SPRING!!!

message 2277: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments We need snow or rain but still I don't envy you, Linda.

message 2278: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Too much snow!

message 2279: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I can't believe how different our weather patterns are. I understand neither of us are in temperate zones but why all your snow and nary a drop here all winter.

message 2280: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Good question, Nina.

message 2281: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Weather report; tomorrow night twenty five degrees; Saturday daytime, seventy one degrees..Figure?

message 2282: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Wow! That's a jump, Nina. We got a bunch of snow last night, but only an inch or two stuck to the porches & cars. The roads were clear except for 3 stupid deer who couldn't decide which side of the road to stand on. I crept forward at a walking pace between them.

2 made it across (left) when I drove up & one stayed on the right. Then one charged back to the right just in front of the car. As I pulled past, the one on the left charged ahead of me & fell down as it turned to sharp & skittered to the right. The two on the right charged behind my car to the left at the same time, though. I'm guessing they all figured it out after I left, but they're awfully stupid. SMH

message 2283: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Poor deer.

message 2284: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments As you probably know an accident involving a deer can be deadly. I am glad only the deer in this case. And no accident.

message 2285: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments First time this season; air conditioning in the car.

message 2286: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments We're still waiting for spring.

message 2287: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We got warm today too. Almost hit 60. I moved hay & was going to ride, but all the horses ran off to the far end of the field & Lily disappeared, too.

message 2288: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Nina wrote: "First time this season; air conditioning in the car."

Wow! Its been cold here. Heat on in the car and on High and heated seats on high as well!

message 2289: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Only 10 degrees here today. Snow on ground is hard.
First day of Spring will just be a calendar event for us. True springtime is around the corner, somewhere.

Good news - Sunny and no wind.

message 2290: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Hope it warms up soon.

message 2291: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm staying home today due to white ugliness on the roads. We were supposed to get 2"-5" of snow & it started last night about 5pm when the temp had been 34 degrees all day. It was still 33 degrees when I went to bed around 9pm. This morning it's 30 degrees & we have a couple of inches on the roads which haven't been touched, so it's a combination of ice, slush, & snow. Very ugly to drive on. Even in 4WD I was sliding trying to get up hills, so I turned around & came home.

It's supposed to keep snowing for a few more hours & get above freezing around noon. I doubt we'll get much more snow, thankfully. Nothing like the people east & north of us. They're getting a foot or more.

message 2292: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It was wise to go back home.

message 2293: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Wise choice. Last night back to below freezing and chilly wind amidst sunshine today and expected sixty eight degrees tomorrow. Yeah as it's finally beginning to look like spring.

message 2294: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Yesterday was gorgeous & today we're getting a rain/ice/snow mix until noon. I can here it tapping on the siding now. No plans to leave the farm today. Then it looks like the weather is supposed to get nice all next week without any nights below freezing. I hope so.

My forsythias have been trying to bloom for 3 weeks & are looking decidedly ragged. The poor daffodils bloomed & then got 5" of snow on them Wed. They collected the most since it was 34 out when it started snowing & got down to 28. They're back up & at it, though. Tough plants.

message 2295: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Terrible weather for everything.

message 2296: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The rain quit at noon for a couple of hours & then started up again. 33 or 34 degrees, cold enough that it didn't even melt the inch or so of snow. Everything is still white & I'd guess we've had another couple of inches. Not much wind, thank goodness. Still, it's raw out & muddy. Every foot step melts the slush into mud. Yuck.

Sounds like ugly weather Jim. Weather reports said we may get snow overnight. Luckily, this didn't happen. First thing I did when I awoke was to peek out the window. No new snow. Hurray!

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Joy, Thursday weather is supposed to reach 55 in our area! This week in the 40's. We shall see ...

message 2299: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We're supposed to have a nice week coming up, but more rain by the middle. Too much rain. I'm glad our floors are brown. There's no keeping up with all the mud we're all dragging in.
