Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments MERRY CHRISTMAS!

message 2102: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Hope it was Merry. Very cold here in the twenties at night and perhaps even colder before morning.

message 2103: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We're in for a cold spell. It's not supposed to get above freezing for the next week or more & we might see single digits by next weekend. I'll have to cover all the outside spigots, even though they're frost free. Nothing here in KY is built for single digits, not for long anyway.

I wonder how my Golden Rain tree will do in the cold this time. When I first planted it a decade ago, it grew well for a couple of years & then a single digit cold snap killed it. It grew back from the roots & has since survived a couple of similar (one longer) cold snaps without any harm. One of those was cold & long enough that it killed off all the crepe myrtle bushes, even my neighbor's which was 30 or 40 years old. They've all come back from their roots, too.

message 2104: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Thirteen degrees this morning and so far the second coldest Dec 26th on record and the rest of the week looks worse/one night five degrees. BRRRRR! I am hoping my azaleas make it.

message 2105: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Wayyyy below zero this morning. Now a high at 3 degrees.
Good news - sunny and no snow in forecast today!!

message 2106: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We have a bit of a warm up! It was 14 when I went to bed last night, but 20 when I got up this morning. It's been in the single digits the last couple of mornings which is just wrong. I'm in Kentucky, a southern state. Momma Nature needs to remember that.
;)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Nina wrote: "My husband thinks Global Warming is nowhere near us; single digits and one night predicted near zero..."

That's not what global warming means. Sigh. As Heinlein put it, "Climate is what you expect, weather is what you get." You don't assume women are taller than men because you see a few that are in one small group.

It means the average temperature around the globe is warmer & that's the case. Whether this is a short term or long term trend, how much is due to humans, just what the damage will be & more are different arguments, but there is no doubt about the overall average temp. You can see more here:
https://globalclimate.ucr.edu/resourc...

It's pretty interesting what they've found out about climactic changes over the years & what it's done to civilization. It might be why farming began when the Fertile Crescent got drier & hunter-gatherers started responding to it. IIRC, that was due to a melting glacier that flooded in & goofed up the Gulf Stream. The Black Sea used to be a fresh water lake until global warming caused a rise in sea levels which broke through a land bridge & it was flooded raising its level 50' or so. I forget exactly. Had a big effect on how all the people living around it lived, though.

All that happened thousands of years ago, a seemingly long time by our reckoning, but just a blip in geological time. It's hard to keep that perspective. A century is barely an eye blink geologically. I struggle with that constantly since I'm aware of it, but my ego says my few short days are the truly important ones. They are to me, not to the world or the universe, though.

Here is a picture of Earth from Cassini, the probe we sent to Saturn, in 2013. Look closely for the arrow pointing to Earth. We're really an insignificant bit on an even less significant bit in the scheme of things.

message 2109: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Yes, that is very convincing. I do know in spite of our very cold days the ponds and lakes around here are not frozen the way they used to be when my children were young and ice skating on them.

message 2110: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) No, the ponds & streams don't seem to be frozen as often nor as long. In the 70s & early 80s, we often skated down the creek to the dam, but there was only one year in the 90s when it got cold enough. I don't think it has since then. It's a shame since that was a lot of fun. Almost a mile of clear ice each way.

message 2111: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We started out at 9 degrees this morning, got to a high around 17 & are now back down to 9. Brrr. There was very little wind, thankfully. Moved 50+ bales of hay today & it was cold up on that truck. Mostly my hands.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments HAPPY NEW YEAR!

message 2115: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Happy new year, although a chilly one here. Not as bad as -20, thankfully. I woke up about 4am & thought the house was a little cold. Went back to bed. Got up an hour later & knew the house was cold - 63, should be 70. The breaker blew on the furnace. It was 1 degree out, now down to 0. That's very rare for KY.

We turned on some space heaters & I manually turned the main furnace on & off to get us back up to 70. I'm thinking the new unit really should have a 40 amp breaker instead of the 30 amp that is there. The new unit is a year or 2 old & the breaker wasn't replaced when it was installed. I'll get in touch with the installer, a friend today. Probably nothing I can do about it until tomorrow. While I could swap out the breaker, I'm not sure about the wire. It's a short run, so I don't think the gauge is a big deal, but that's out of my league. I might need to get a real electrician in.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Stay warm everyone.

Happy New Year to All.

message 2117: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Weather is truly frigid! Beautiful Super Moon last night.

message 2118: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It went down to 0 again this morning, still 4 degrees warmer than the day before. I fixed the heater by putting in a new 40 amp breaker. We're keeping everything buttoned up as best we can. The house is staying warm & all the water is still flowing, thankfully.

I haven't used the frost-free hydrant outside my shop in over a week. I covered it with a contractor's trash bag & a tall trash can, but am still worried about it, so I put a light in a tomato cage under that. I'm only putting it on for a few hours at a time, though. I'm worried the plastic will get too hot & melt. So far, it hasn't, but I'd hate to burn my shop down.

message 2119: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Not too happy yet! No house phone or Internet for three days; but at least we had heat so didn't have to face zero nights freezing and then noticed our carpet was damaged in our downstairs basement bedroom. It seems our Bosch dishwasher was leaking down into it. About a month ago we got a notice that our five year old dishwasher had a bad part that could start a fire if not replaced. So, about a couple of weeks ago someone came out and replaced and now my husband is convinced they did something to the hose and that is what caused our immediate problem. They are due to come out this afternoon. Hoping we don't have to pay for a service call. When we tried to get help for our non Internet problem for three days all we got on our cell phone call was someone in India who couldn't understand at all our problem..So goes it in cold KS.

message 2120: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I hope things improve, Nina!

message 2121: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I hope your problems will be solved very soon!

message 2122: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Thanks, turns out the dishwasher is not at fault it is the sewer backing up was the problem. This is not yet solved.

message 2123: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Oh my! That's worse. Good luck!!!

message 2124: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We hit 30 today briefly. It felt warmer at 18 yesterday since there is a biting wind today.

There is one company that is seeing the brighter side. I stopped by Interstate Battery today & they said they sold $5000 worth of car batteries yesterday alone. Apparently that's about a month's worth of sales.

Oh dear! More investigating to do.

Not good about no house phone or internet service. Do you have a cell phone?

message 2126: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Weather is coooooold. Driving home from work yesterday needed an abundance of concentration. Only 2 lanes out of 3 on major highway were semi-cleared of snow. Slow going. Arrived safely at home. Husband had a 1/2 glass of wine in my favorite glass waiting for me on the kitchen counter. :)

Heading out for work in a little while. Sunny. Cold. Not snowing which is good. Wind is not as high as expected. All good news.

Stay warm and safe everyone. Nina, I'm hoping your issues get resolved very quickly. Keep us posted.

message 2127: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Plumber en route as I write. But, also bad news as my daughter's horse had to be put down this morning. Not age; but infection in the leg. We are grieving. Not a happy new year so far.

message 2128: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Yes, we do have cell phones so were able to call for plumber etc. but hardly ever use them as most of our calling friends don't have one and were confused as to why they weren't able to contact us. But, now phone is working and we are on internet, obviously. Just worried about major construction in basement bedroom. Will keep everyone posted

message 2129: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm sorry to read that Nina, especially since the other horse went, too. That's an awful way to start the year not to mention the septic issue.

We're the same way with the cell phones at home - we rarely use them. The landline is still the best way to get us. We have extensions around the house, in the barn, & in the shop. The cell phones are spotty at best in any of the buildings & don't work at all if we're down by the pond or in the woods.

message 2130: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The weather broke here. Yesterday we started out in the single digits & got up to 40! Hadn't made the 30s for almost 2 weeks, barely into the 20s at the warmest, so this was very welcome. Not much thawed so the rain we're getting is freezing, but it was 35 out when I left the house. The stepping stones were ice covered, but the roads were fine due to the salt. Not a bad drive in.

message 2131: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments We, too, welcomed the upper forties today and even warmer tomorrow in the fifties and then back to winter with five degrees only Saturday night and cold on Sunday..Oh well, nice while it lasted. Another plumber coming tomorrow and hope he can fix the problem as I am tired of not being able to use the kitchen sink.

message 2132: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We were in the 30s all day, but it was a drippy, cold, raw day. While my drive into work was fine, they cancelled school & my son-in-law turned around due to black ice. I guess I drove in during a sweet spot. It got a little colder around dawn, the rain washed off some salt, & that was just enough to make it really treacherous.

Good luck with the plumber, Nina. That is a drag. At least you have the toilet! We needed a port-a-pot for a couple/few weeks one February 25 years ago or so. I remember sitting in it with ice crystals & wind pounding it. NOT FUN!

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Happy day today! Able to go out and shovel some snow - got another 3 inches yesterday. Nice fluffy snow.

35 degrees at 8am this morning! Heat wave. Yahoooooooo!

Good about having cell phone. Thanks for letting me know. (I get concerned about people.)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I stayed home today. Got some bug that Marg had last weekend. Good timing since I don't want to be driving today.

Winter is back with a vengeance. Yesterday we were in the low 60s. This morning at 6am, we were still in the mid 50s, & now at 7:30am, we're at 33! It's raining, too. Supposed to change to freezing rain & then snow shortly after that with a few inches of accumulation. We're supposed to be below freezing the rest of the week.

After weeks of hard freezing, then a couple of warm days with rain, the fields are just soup on frozen ground. The horses are worse than pigs for wallowing & are covered in mud. Marg put blankets on the Throughbreds (Tango & Topaz) last night after giving them a bath to get all the mud off. It was too warm, but she needed to get the blankets on them before they got wet with the icy rain. Chip & Pumpkin were too shaggy to dry off in time & can handle the cold better, but I think it's going to be a chilly day for them.

message 2139: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Yesterday rain then freezing rain and then snow flakes and bitter cold so schools closed. Today no rain but is spite of sunshine it is only three degrees this morning. But, grateful after five hours work by plumbers we can use our sink again. However, two huge holes remain to be fixed; part of basement bedroom wall is open and then another hole next to back of sink. These need to be taken care of when we can find someone and in the meantime my husband will try to put lumber up to keep mice out of kitchen and keep cold air from rushing into the basement. So, first part over thank goodness.

message 2140: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments PS Hope you are feeling better very soon. Jim, Take care of yourself.

message 2141: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We're up to 17 now from the 11 degrees we started with. Only a couple of inches of snow & not much ice. Had to plow some areas due to 6" drifts, but not too bad. Josh helped me, which was especially nice putting the tire chains on the tractor since each one weighs about 100 lbs. He did most of the plowing, too. Great to have a ground man for both of us.

message 2143: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Wine chill tomorrow night 22 below zero.. I used t like winter. Note, "used to."

message 2144: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The drive into work this morning was awful, snow covered, very slick roads until I was several miles down the Interstate & then only 2 of the 3 lanes were open. The drive home was fine, thankfully.

We're supposed to get another 1"-3" tonight into tomorrow morning with VERY cold temps. Lexington is calling for 4 degrees which means we'll probably be below 0. That's real temps, no windchill factored in. Salt doesn't work in that kind of cold.

I see the snow has just started & it's 3:30pm. Yuck. Well, maybe it will go through faster than they thought & the roads will be clear in 13 hours when I need to go in to work again. Fingers crossed. If it's anything like this morning, I'm staying home.

It was scary driving in. Not only were the roads super slick, so that the least pressure on the gas or brakes made the tires lose traction, but I saw 2 herds of deer on the edge of the road. Luckily, they just stood there & didn't go bounding about. Worse was the driver I got behind who was going far too slow. I had to stop a couple of times since they'd get to a hill & then spin all over as they attempted to get up the other side at 15-20 mph. They almost went off the road a couple of times. At 30-40 mph, I did it without a problem. They were peeved when I finally had a chance to pass them & did. Tough.

Nina | 6069 comments Better safe than sorry as the old saying goes. Do stay home when there is doubt to your safety.

message 2146: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I agree with Nina. Be safe.

message 2147: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) No work today. The snowplow built a wall across the bottom of the lane & it's pure ice at 11 degrees. It's amazing how it can do that with only 2" of snow! Nothing going in or out until I can knock it down with the tractor & that's going to require a couple of hours with the block heater & some daylight.

message 2148: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Oh, dear! How awful!

message 2149: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments As I write this is it is three degrees and wind chill of twenty below zero and then by Friday it is expected to be fifty degrees. All in one week. Crazy weather and freezing. Poor birds. Schools closed.

message 2150: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Got all the lanes plowed. About 4" of snow & it's up to 13 degrees. There isn't a much colder spot than sitting on my tractor (no cab) in this weather plowing. Luckily, the kids' & neighbor's place are both very quick & easy. Our place takes 3 times as long with the roundabout, parking area, & all. I was out there for over 2 hours. I'm frozen! Brrr!

We have 50 degree weather coming this weekend, too. Wish I could have just hibernated until it came.
