Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments A good weather day - and it's Thanksgiving!

message 2052: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Our weather fine today after two days in the forties with cold wind blowing and now it seems we're predicted to have seventy degrees tomorrow. If you don't like the weather here just wait and it will change; one way or the other..Hope your Thanksgiving day was special

message 2053: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments A nice sunrise this morning. Expected temp to be around 48 which is fabulous for this time of year.

Our 300-foot driveway is tree lined. Once again we need to go out and blow and rake leaves.

message 2054: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Our weeks weather is either in the sixties or seventies. Above average for our climate but great November weather and even next week in Dec. it is predicted to be seventy one.

message 2055: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Do you have a blower?

message 2056: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We're over 50 today & I'm finally feeling decent again. I spent the morning in the shop without feeling awful.

message 2057: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Let's hope you've turned the corner, Jim and you continue to feel better. Predicted temps for tomorrow in the seventies.. Yeah.

message 2058: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I think I did turn the corner, Nina. I got some chores done around the place both yesterday & today. The high yesterday was 60, today 50, but both were sunny & without much wind. Felt good to be out & doing stuff.

I cut up some more of the cherry tree that fell next to the barn field for bowl blanks today. I'm going to have to make an effort to get it turned quickly now. It's fully dead now, so I don't have much time before it dries out too much & rots. I wish I'd realized that, but I was working on a catapult & taking pictures so I can write up the plans.

I did get 10 bowls turned out of the Cleveland pear branch that came down the other day. Only lost 2. One I cut too deep so it came off its base on the lathe. The other cracked badly while drying. Such is life & why people should pay generously for decent hand work. Most only see the best of the successes. For each one of those, there are failures. Only 1 in 6 is pretty good for the type of turning I do - found wood turned green & then dried.

message 2059: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Do you have a market for your bowls?

message 2060: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I think I do have a market for them now, Nina. There's a Renaissance Fair for 6 or 7 weekends in early summer & I've found a vendor who will sell my stuff there. I'll have to show up some, but he & the others he sells with will spend most of the time. They're 12 hour days spent in period costume, so I didn't want to go it alone. Even with the help of family & friends, it would be exhausting & there are other issues.

When we lived in MD, I could just show up & sell, but here in KY the state has pretty much made it mandatory to have a small business license in order to sell at any of the better venues including this one. So, unless I can get covered by another business for the license, insurance, & the rental contract, I'd have to face the paperwork. Making stuff is my hobby. If I have to start dealing with licenses & taxes, it's a job. I have a good job, one that pays far better than woodworking ever could so I just don't want to go there.

I still bring a few dozen bowls up to MD every other year when we visit. While I probably give a third or more away as gifts, I wind up selling the rest. There's a lot more money & a lot less people doing woodwork there. Last time, it paid for the whole vacation plus a bit, I think. I don't really keep track.

My hobby probably doesn't completely pay for itself & the shop, but it comes close what with all the gifts we don't have to buy, good will, & occasional sales. That's a GOOD hobby. Far better than my wife's. The horses are nothing but a black hole to dump money into.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments One of my friends sells used items at flea markets. She has a vendor license. Her niche is selling reused CDs/DVDs of music and movies. Lots of work involved. Inventory, pricing, recordkeeping, searching for additional items to sell and keeping up her inventory.

On the day of flea market event, she is up at 3am to load her van. Drive to location. Park, unload the van - you get the picture. Upside she usually does well $-wise.

I tried selling a few household items on Facebook - they have some local "online garage sale" sites. A few downsides are - "no shows" and you have to check Messenger or the site periodically to see if anyone is interested in your item. Can be time-consuming, can be fun. Frustrating if you plan to meet somewhere and they don't show.

message 2062: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Weather today - crisp autumn day - sun shining - 20degrees. Expected high of 40 by 5pm.

message 2063: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We're a lot warmer, around 60, some wind, but a lot of sun. Nice!

Selling is a lot of work. While I don't worry much about inventory, I'm going to have to figure out something for pricing. Typically I price every bowl individually, but always have an issue with price tags. On photo sensitive wood like cherry, they'll leave a lighter spot in an amazingly short period of time unless I put them under the base. That's the area where I sign, date, & describe the bowl, though.

I think I'll have to just price them by size & shape. Natural edge bowls, ones with the bark on the edge, are harder to turn than regular ones. I can break the sizes into a few basic sizes for a base price. Things like candle sticks, napkin holders, & Inkle looms can easily be priced with a tag on a string.

message 2064: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I do understand the frustrations of the selling part. I once did quite a bit of freelance writing. The mailing and who to send it you and waiting for answers etc was lots more of a hassle than writing the essays, poems, articles etc. ever were. good luck with your ventures. I am sure they are wonderful finished products.

message 2065: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Enjoy the fun aspects of making a product and selling. The rest is a challenge!

I would stop at your sale table - look at the bowls and candle sticks and appreciate the talent.

message 2066: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments What's the weather today? Nice. Currently 40 degrees and its only 745am. Wonderful!

message 2067: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's 41 at home, 48 here in Louisville at 10am. Nice day again. Hopefully I'll get to enjoy it.

I have a doctor's appointment at 1pm to follow up on the pneumonia. This has been the weirdest bout I've ever had. I never coughed much & after sleeping Wed through Friday, I felt fine last Sat & Sun, if light on stamina.

Monday I felt great until about 10:30am when I just ran out of gas & fell apart. I goofed a spreadsheet several times & felt like I was on drugs. I went home & slept 2.5 hours. Woke up feeling awful for an hour & then felt OK, but never great. Yesterday I felt awful all day, but never ran out of gas. Just achy & crappy, but clear headed. Today I feel great. Oy! Up & down.

message 2068: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Take Care. Jim/ pneumonia is not something to fool around with so beware of those consequences. Hope your good times outlast the not so good.

message 2069: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Jim, oy is right. Take care of yourself. Pneumonia can be tricky (all depends on what kind bacterial or viral). Continue to rest. Drink fluids.

Don't push yourself to do things. Give your body a chance to heal - you are such a busy person doing multiple projects. Take a little rest.

Hope you feel better today!

message 2070: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments As far as the weather today. Cold! Only 20 degrees this morning. Had to go down basement and bring up some more winter sweaters.

message 2071: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Thanks, but I seem to be all healed up now. It's not too cold here yet. Only hit the mid 50s & is getting down to just freezing at night. Next week is supposed to get really cold, though.

message 2072: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Good to hear you are all healed.

message 2073: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Glad you are better before the cold weather sets in. It is very mild here today/upper sixties and light wind but expect colder weather at end of the week.

message 2074: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments weather is good. sunny day today. Monday night the Moon was a pale eerie yellow - awesome looking.

message 2075: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments weather today? another good one with mild temps - near 40 and some sun. It's almost 8am and I haven't seen the sun peep out yet - covered by clouds.

message 2076: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We've got less than an inch of snow & over 50 accidents in Lexington alone. Oy! The ground had time to get cold. It's been at or below freezing for a couple of days & was only 17 last night. No salt on the roads, so of course they're going to be slick.

message 2077: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments We are in a dry mode/no moisture for twenty seven days and still going. Maybe we are blessed and don't know it.

message 2078: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Snow, snow, snow.
Woke up to 6 inches of snow. Started shoveling at 12 inches. Husband did the snow blowing.

Soft fluffy snow. Weather report showed rain for the afternoon but it didn't rain thank goodness.

A little over 14 inches on ground now.

message 2079: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Brrr. We only got 1/2" the other day & that's all gone. We keep waking up to temps in the teens, though. Cutting winds.

message 2080: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments No snow here/maybe by Christmas...

message 2081: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Today temps were about 28. Not too bad. Sun out and no wind. Expecting snow tomorrow Friday night into Saturday. I didn't check on how many inches. Guess I just don't want to know.

message 2082: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We were about the same temp, 28 or so, but had a mean wind. It was like a knife.

message 2083: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments No weather complaints/mostly in the upper fifties but cold start to the day. Should reach sixty this afternoon.

message 2084: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Dec 21 and temps are at 23 degrees. Partly cloudy. No wind to speak of today. Yesterday, very windy. We have a large amount of pine cones on top of the snow covered ground. I am contemplating making something - what I don't know - out of pine cones.

Looked up how to get sap off of pine cones. One article stated to soak in water first then place on pan and bake in oven. Another article omitted the soaking part - just said bake in oven.

Anyone ever work with pine cones - getting the sap off?

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Our Glens Falls weather report for Friday (DEC 22)says:
"Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 7 inches possible."

message 2086: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I have worked with pine cones a lot & never thought about dealing with the sap. I'd guess turpentine would thin it down, though. There's another product called 'Goof off' or something that's supposed to be good, but I haven't tried it.

We're closing in on 50 today & yet are supposed to drop into 20s tonight & stay cold. No snow that I'm aware of. Good luck with it, Joy.

message 2087: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Weather here in KS is fifty four degrees. Not a bad day.

message 2088: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments 54 that's fabulous
today been snowing since early morning
its 16 degrees here right now
later on or early tomorrow - depending where one is located - expecting a wintry mix

winter is here

thanks for the ideas - good to have choices - my opportunity to go and pick up the pine cones that the wind blew down has gone - snowing today and the pine cones are getting covered up!!!

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments The snow is coming down!

message 2091: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Are you singing "White Christmas?"

message 2092: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Are you kidding? The idea of snow has lost all its charm. It has now become simply a problem of logistics, trying to survive all the work and worry, not to mention the awful cold temps. It's 21 degrees here right now and the snow is a high as our little dog's eye.

message 2093: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) That's cold, Joy. Good luck. Hope the power stays on,

I was wrong about our forecast. We hit the mid 50s this morning, wet day, but rarely more than a mist. Tomorrow it's supposed to get colder & rain heavily. We might get some snow in time for Xmas, but it won't last. More likely just melt & turn into ice as temps keep going down.

message 2094: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments I'm with Joy. Snow looks pretty while falling but the falling of snow is a problem.

My husband had to get bundled up and get out on the tractor again to do a 2nd round of snow blowing. We have a 300 foot driveway and a parking area for 3 cars. Tomorrow, I'll be going out to help shovel.

Expecting a wintry mix - hope they are wrong with the forecast.

message 2095: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, at least it's not a high as an elephant's eye.

message 2096: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Heaven forbid!

message 2097: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Weather report correct. Rain on top of the snow. We went to Walmart to get some food items. Place was very busy with food shoppers and holiday shoppers. Parking areas a bit slippery.

Then, I had to shovel ice that was on the cleared pathway from the house to the garage without slipping/falling. I did pretty well. Shoveling was always my husband's chore which we now share (he tires easily).

Staying indoors the rest of the day. I'll treat myself to a glass of wine with dinner. :)

Stay safe everyone.

message 2098: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Glad you stayed upright. We're going in the opposite direction temperature-wise.

message 2099: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Thanks, I was certainly surprised at my ability to do a few slides and not fall.

message 2100: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Merry Christmas Everyone.

For those wishing for snow - they got their wish! Snowing again.
