Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Temp here is in the 60's.

message 2454: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We're mid 90s too. Ugh. Supposed to go down into the 70s this weekend, though.

message 2455: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Wow, that's hot!

message 2456: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Predicted rain tonight and then seventies for the rest of the week and beyond. Hope the hot weather has abated forever. Bit of a muddle here; I used to look out our kitchen window and bless this house for our great view of trees and not looking at a neighbor's roof. Alas, one morning in an instant the middle tree was cut down. We had no idea why our view went from Lovely to Ugly until we were informed the aborist said it had Ash disease as many in our city also were suffering from so there went our tree and then they trimmed the pine trees behind my fenced in garden and the limbs fell over the fence into my flowers knocking them down to the ground/the ones in baskets on the fence. And now we see no birds at our feeders as they too are discouraged at the terrible noise. So this is depressed Nina in hot KS

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Sorry to hear that, Nina.

message 2458: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) That's a shame, Nina. All the ash trees in my woods, about 20% of the total trees, died when the Emerald Ash Borer came through 5-7 years ago. A farmer's lane that I pass twice daily used to be lined with them. All gone. The kids had to spend a lot of money getting their's cut down & they did most of the cleanup. It's been a real mess.

On the positive side, the woodpeckers are booming since a lot of the dead trees are still standing. Oddly enough, the young ash next to my house is still alive & doing fine. No idea why.

message 2459: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I am glad your Ash survived. Hard to second guess the life of trees.

message 2460: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Well, it's not a huge mystery. The ash borer only likes mature trees & the one next to my house didn't hit puberty until 3 years ago. That was several years after most of the borers had passed though. There aren't a lot around since they don't reproduce in dead trees, either. Our house is a bird haven, too. I've landscaped the place to foster them & we have a lot of different kinds of feeders, so that tree is often full of birds which has to keep the beetles down. It has a few holes in it, but it's young enough that it is surviving. I'm watching it pretty closely. I'm not sure if it will continue to thrive & will take it down quickly if it dies. It's not huge yet, but could hit the house & is up against the backyard fence.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I hope the tree will live, Jim.

Mary JL (maryjl) | 527 comments Yesterday, 96 and incredible humid. Rain and thunder allnight and now 61 degress--a welcome relief! Cool predicted for the next few days!

message 2463: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Hope you get comfortable weather, Mary.

message 2464: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We were around 60 all weekend, down from the 90s just days before. Saturday we got 1.5" rain & yesterday almost 3". We're supposed to be getting even more today.

96 to 61. Kind of weather which gives me a sinus headache!

message 2466: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments So glad we are in fall. Summer of 2018 was too hot and too humid. Like sweater weather.

We had to take in our bird feeders because of bears. I miss the birds. Can put the feeders out again December 1.

Still have animals!! 4 deer in yard - a family, 2 young ones, Mom and a 2 pointer Dad. At the same time, there was a flock of turkeys in front yard - about 20.

Every morning there is one black squirrel in the back yard. Towards later morning he has a gray squirrel friend and they are feeding from the front lawn.

A few days ago, down the driveway - there were 3 pileated woodpeckers on the trees. Usually they fly away when you approach but they kept pecking away on the trees. Such a cool looking bird.

message 2467: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Wow! That's a lot of Pileated woodpeckers together. Neat to see. They are cool looking.

message 2468: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I love deer. They are so pretty and graceful.

message 2469: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments We once had a resident albino squirrel that lived near our condo in the city. And speaking of deer, one of my most memorable scenes was driving down the gravel road to our lake house and leaping right in front of us were the deer silouetted against the full harvest moon.

message 2470: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I've never seen an albino squirrel. Interesting!

Yes! The 3 are hanging out together. We had them in yard during early summer (when I could still put out feeders until the bears were spotted). Two babies, Mom and Pop. A total of 4 were seen once. Afterwards 3 at a time. So very very cool.

Never saw an albino squirrel. We like our black squirrel. He's considered a resident of our yard. :)

message 2473: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Weather - only 54 right now under cloudy skies. Not what weather folks forecasted a few days ago - they said sunny skies. Now they say sun at 5pm. Huh?

message 2474: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Same here, Linda. It started poking out at lunch time. Terribly misty this morning.

message 2475: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Finally feels like fall; forties at night and seventies and eighties in the daytime. Great weather but as usual we need rain.

message 2476: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments They are completely white.

message 2477: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments 61 degrees here today.

message 2478: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Turned on the air conditioner last night and so much wind today and almost ninety. Cold front coming it by Friday. Then rain for ten days during which we are having out of town company. Wish me luck.

message 2479: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Good luck. It's been warm here, too.

message 2480: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Good luck, Nina.
Temp here is in the 60's.

message 2481: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments High today in upper forties and last week was eighty. That's our crazy weather but next week will be in upper sixties. Unusual cold for Oct. When my fifth child was born on Oct fifth it was one hundred and five degrees. Oh well, it's interesting to say the least.

message 2482: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It was in the 50s here today.

message 2483: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We started out at 37 today, 50 degrees colder than 36 hours earlier & got up into the upper 50s. It doesn't feel too bad when the sun is out, but it's supposed to be rainy & in the low 50s tomorrow.

message 2484: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Another cloudy day here. Current temp is 44 degrees,

message 2485: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments A cold 36 degrees this Monday morning. Cloudy. Lots of leaves on the lawn and driveway. Guess I'll be raking this afternoon!!

message 2486: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Same weather here; cold but warmer is on the way in the middle of the week; upper sixties. At least today it isn't raining. I can't believe I have two lovely blossoms on my small azalea bush.

message 2487: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Current temp is 48 degrees.

message 2488: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Today is a sunny and brisk day. Current temp is 46 degrees.

4 male turkeys were on front lawn this morning.

We got some topsoil delivered yesterday - thought perhaps the turkeys would jump in it - only kidding.

Getting ready to redo our lawn. Ten years ago we had to dig up yard to redo the underground electric. Guy delivered bad soil - even had glass and other debris. Now we just have crabgrass and non-grass growing on lawn. Time to do!

message 2489: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Current temp is 45.

message 2490: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Frost last night. Sixty later in day, though. Soon must bring in terra cotta pots before they crack. Yesterday washed mud from ceramic decor that was sitting in my garden. Messy work. Watched "The Great Pumpkin, Charley Brown," and wasn't Charles Schulz a genius?

message 2491: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We're supposed to get frost tonight, I think. Not bad out today. Upper 40s.

message 2492: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Current temp here is 44 degrees.

message 2493: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Sixty three this afternoon with southern breeze. Nice fall day but twenty eight degrees last night and most of my flowers got zapped.

message 2494: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments The frost will do it every time. I remember the feeling. I used to take my pots in before a frost and then put them out again the next day. Now I don't have the energy these days.

message 2495: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments That's me too, Joy. Not that much energy to do that now.

Don't think we'll see 60 again. But one never knows with this ever-changing weather.

message 2497: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments It's 7:30 and 41 degrees. Guess its sweater and slacks for work today.

message 2498: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It was in the mid 30s here this morning, not quite cold enough for the frost we're expecting tonight.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments The current temp is 45 F.
