Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Werner, it's that good you didn't have the problem of removing a lot of snow from your property. I dread that.

I'm not fond of that job, either, Joy!

Jim (jimmaclachlan) They're calling for 1"-3" of snow starting around 4am here, but it should end 4-5 hours later. Supposed to be colder tonight too, at least according to one forecast. It was really ugly - lots of single digits. The ones I'm seeing now look better, though. More teens & 20's. I can only hope. Makes more sense with the snow coming.

message 1804: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Our weather forecast must have been getting revisions all night. It was 32 when I got up this morning, far warmer than I expected & they mentioned on the 6pm news. No snow yet. Maybe they got that wrong, too. I sure hope it doesn't come during commute times.

message 1805: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Jan 12, 2016 07:22AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments They're calling for some snow around here: "Snow likely, mainly after 1pm. ... Chance of precipitation is 70%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible." Temp = 24F.

message 1806: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments PS-Travel safe, Jim.

message 1807: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The snow came & went already. Only got about an inch & most of that melted even on the grass. The temp is dropping & it's supposed to be really cold tonight, like single digits again. I guess what Marg & I saw last night was an incorrect graphic of the temps. I looked at another today & it was the same as the one last night, just a day off.

message 1808: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Our snow is here already! It's coming down in BIG flakes. I don't like this!

message 1809: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments All kinds of witner weather it seems. Last winter it was warm enough that I walked almost every day but I have already missed several days this winter due to bitter cold. Today is in the twenties and tomorrow will be forty somthing but by next Sunday the cold returns/temp around five degrees on Monday morning. Brrrr. And so far only a smattering of an inch of snow that was a month ago. We'll see what happens next week.

message 1810: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments PS Who would ever think I would mourn a mule's passing? But, years ago my daughter gave her husband a baby mule for Christmas and we all fell in love with him. They trained him well and my son in law was even able to ride him. This was written up in a MO magazine with pictures when they were on a trail ride and then yesterday my daughter put a notice on Facebook that Bill(the mule) and David Bowie hit the trails together to go to their last adventure.

message 1811: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments How old was the mule, Nina?

message 1812: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Odd weather. Not even an inch of snow yet this winter and fifty five degrees and climbing this afternoon. And we'd better enjoy it while we can/12 degrees predictied by Sunday morning. Brrr. Today I took advantage of the warmer weather and cleaned the bird bath. We need rain or snow so my husband doesn't have to keep watering our newly planted tree. And there are all those floods on the other side of the state.

message 1813: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, enjoy the milder weather.

message 1814: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We went from 4 degrees & 2" of snow yesterday morning to 50 this afternoon. What a roller coaster!!!

message 1815: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Our weather seems similiar, Jim. Once I was told it was harder on plants and trees to experience up and down climate in the winter than very cold consistantly.

message 1816: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's sure tough on the people & animals! I couldn't seem to get any energy today. You seem to get it a day ahead of us & a bit more extreme, Nina. Same as we do with MD.

message 1817: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments 37 degrees here. Another gray day.

message 1818: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Jim, I hope our very cold weather doesn't make it as far as KY. It is going to be five degrees on Monday morning and barely better than that the day before. Not good for plants, trees, beasts or humans except good for old movies and cocoa and good books. Did all of our errands this morning so we can stay warm and cozy until the freeze abates. Although we will make it as far as the bird feeders during this very cold weather.

message 1819: by Werner (new)

Werner The temperature here was 36 degrees this afternoon, up from 28 degrees in the morning. It rained heavily in the afternoon (a cold rain, obviously), but there are predictions it will change to snow tonight and continue to snow through Sunday morning. (Of course, such predictions aren't always borne out.)

message 1820: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments It is two fifteen PM here and twelve degrees and falling. Brrr. Poor birds. I did make it out in almost zero weather this morning and they hovered at the feeders but way up high sat a hawk. Weighing his opitions.

message 1821: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We're a little warmer, mid 20's & now close to the teens, a bit of snow falling. We've had quite a few bright birds out eating this morning. I watched a Red breasted woodpecker chase a Downy off the suet feeder. He joined another over on the peanut feeder. Two Blue Jays chased a Cardinal off another feeder, but there's another just 20' away, where he joined another. A lot of sparrows, Dark-eyed Juncos & Nuthatches around. I haven't seen many finches around today, but the thistle feeders are still being eaten up. No hawks around today, thankfully. When they all disappear, we know to look for one of them.

Nature is cruel, Nina, but you are kind. The birds are lucky to have you.

I don't see many birds since I stopped putting out seeds. I used to enjoy watching them but the seeds attracted mice.

message 1824: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments That could be difficult Joy. NO mice for me. Once they chewed the pipes in our dishwasher and caused flooding in the ktichen which then went down into our finished basement ruining the ceiling and damaging the furniture. It was quite a few months before it all got back in place again/new dishwasher and flooring etc. I don't like mice.

message 1825: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We just keep poison out for the mice & put moth balls in places where they might enter, too. That keeps most of them out.

We're down to 14. It's been dropping about a degree every half hour for the past few. They're calling for 4 degrees tonight with the high not hitting 20 tomorrow. Brrr...

message 1826: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) COLD! We're down to 6 degrees, a couple of degrees warmer than they thought it would be. Wind chills are -6 to -9. Brrr!!! I live in the SOUTH!!!
:(

message 1827: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Marg says it is 3 degrees at home now.

message 1828: by Mary JL (new)

Mary JL (maryjl) | 527 comments In Omaha, Nebraska yesterday Morning, the air temperature was a whopping -6F, with a wind chill index of -23F.!!!

This morning when I got up it has 'risen' to 2F!

message 1829: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Hope you are all keeping warm!

Double brrr!

message 1831: by Werner (new)

Werner Our predicted heavy snow didn't materialize (though we had some), but it's been quite cold, with a temperature here at the house, by now, of only around 30 degrees even with bright sunshine. (And that reading may overstate how warm it actually is; direct sunlight on the outdoor thermometer tends to raise the readings more than the ambient temperature really warrants.) We've been keeping indoors as much as possible.

message 1832: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments My advice is: "stay indoors"! :)

message 1833: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments It was one degree here today but tomorrrow they are predicting snow. It is sunny outside so we'll see. But, Jim if our weather sends itself your way past our weekend warmth is in sight. We are to be in the upper forties by Sunday. We hope.

message 1834: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Well, not quite as cold as you. Thank goodness. But as I said warmer weather is on it's way, slowly.

message 1835: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We never got past 15 today, but are due to warm up a bit. Unfortunately, the warm up & snow/rain will arrive at the same time, so we're not sure what we'll get. Freezing rain isn't unlikely. I'd rather have plain warm rain or even snow. I hate freezing rain.

message 1836: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's a bit warmer, got up to 20 today, but an inch or two of snow is supposed to land on us during the day tomorrow. Thursday is much warmer, but Friday into Saturday they're thinking we might get almost a foot of snow. A lot depends on the temperature. Might be rain or a mix.

Anyway, I put the tire chains on the tractor tonight. I need to transfer hay between barns tomorrow night. I doubt that will be fun, but better on frozen ground & some snow than on mud or in a foot of it. With Topaz back we're burning through the hay.

message 1837: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, I hope that foot of snow doesn't arrive. They are saying that we too may get a big snow storm soon. Hope they are wrong.

It's amazing all the extra work you are willing to do for your animals. Sometimes, even the task letting the dog out and in is a pain in the neck, since I have to wait by the door for him to come in from his long explorations in the yard. One time I forgot and left our other Maltese out in the cold yard for several hours. I still feel bad about that. Thank goodness he survived.

I know the animals are worth all the trouble because we love them and they love us. That's why we do it.

message 1838: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We fit in what we can, Joy. Since we have a dog door, that makes it easy with them. The horses take the most care, but Marg does most of the daily maintenance. I just do the bigger stuff.

She's off today. We had over an inch of snow when I left for work & we're expecting another inch or three. It started earlier & accumulated more than they forecast last night. It took me about twice as long to get in this morning. They hadn't touched the roads up by my house & even the Interstate was snow covered, although they were working hard on it. The snow is supposed to stop by lunch, so I should get home OK, although I'm not sure how I'll get in the lane. I'll probably have to leave the car at the end & clear it with the tractor first. Glad I got the tire chains on it last night.

I might plan on taking Friday off depending on the forecast.

message 1839: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, take Friday off. You deserve it!

message 1840: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Looks as if the snow is done. We wound up with about 3" & Marg says the plow went down our road, so hopefully the drive home won't be awful. I'll check for accidents before I leave, not that I have a lot of choices in routes. I think the worst driving will be getting from work to the Interstate, a mere mile, but it has the most traffic & this area has decided that there is no need to plow, just sprinkle salt. Dumb.

Thanks, Joy. I might take a 1/2 day Friday. Right now, they're saying the bad weather will arrive about noon, so if I leave here about 10am, I'll be fine. They're still not sure what form of precipitation it will be, but we're getting something. I'll play it by ear.

message 1841: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments They had said a snow storm was coming here but I don't see it in the weather report anymore. Maybe we got lucky.

message 1842: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Congrats! Might have gone a bit south of you.

message 1843: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments We have a two inch coating of ice on our streets and driveway withe about an inch of snow covering it. Very slippery on our street and we have not ventured out except to feed the birds and collect the newspaper. So far this winter we have not had over an inch of snow and I haven't even seen it snow at all. Strange winter. It is still cold in the twenties and yet by Sunday it supposed to be in the forties. Who knows what next week witll bring. Even the so called Shadow doesn't. Does anyone remember hearing that on the radio? Keep warm wherever you are.

message 1844: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) 2" of ice?!!! That's incredible. There must be a lot of damage to trees & power/phone lines. We had about half that amount in 2009 & were without power for 6 days. It pretty much shut down the state.

message 1845: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments So far haven't heard of any damage but we'll see what tomorrow brings as they are predicting freezing drizzle on top of what is already there. Poor birds were hovering about the feeders. I remember when our Irish would have clumps of ice between her pads on the paws. She would yelp unitl I got them off and warmed her feet. I haven't heard how my daughters horses are faring. They have a stable but it isn't heated and we have had zero some nights. I am getting past liking winter.

message 1846: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Error. Now I hear the ice under the snow is one half inch not two inches which is why there has been no damage to wires and we still have electricity and heat. We have had in the past terrible ice storms with resulting damage lasting for days. Glad it wasn't as bad as I thought.

message 1847: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments When it comes to bad weather, losing power is my greatest fear.

message 1848: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) 1/2" is still more ice than I like. It brings down too many trees & branches. Makes walking in the woods dangerous. We have a new small tree next to one path - it's the top of one that fell out & speared into the ground. Looks like it grew there, though.

I got the lane scraped & a half dozen bales of hay over to the horse barn last night. I don't think there's any place colder than a tractor seat. Brrr! It was 20 out & I still got chilled.

They're calling for a major storm starting tonight & ending Saturday, but we're not sure what we'll get. A cold front from the west is meeting a bunch of warm wet air coming from the south & they'll collide right over us. If you look at a map of KY, I live in the upper center where the bump is. I work due west in Louisville, right on the Ohio river which is often the line for these systems.

Depending on which moves in first & how far up the southern air comes, we could see rain, freezing rain, &/or snow in varying amounts. Some models show over an inch of rain with just a bit of ice & snow, but others show over a foot of snow. It will be what it will be, but I'm fairly certain that I'm going to stay home tomorrow. Not worth it!

message 1849: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Yes, Jim, stay home and avoid trouble.

message 1850: by Katherine (new)

Katherine Here in Wellington Ks, it's overcast without a hint of sunshine. Ice on windshield this morning, but roads were good to drive on. North of us in Wichita it's a bit different with icy roads impacting the morning commute.
