Nina | 6069 comments The night before we left for our trip we were in the basement due to tornado warnings/terrible downpours and flooding and yet we were able to get out of town the next morning and didn't have to drive through any of the floods.

Nina | 6069 comments Can you believe it's rainging after I said no rain in sight..

message 1653: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Nina wrote: "That weather is what I heard was here last week. I hope our heat doesn't make it to you next week."

Sounds like it is.

message 1654: by Werner (new)

Werner We had a major thunderstorm here yesterday evening (no doubt the same one Jim experienced, moving east with the prevailing winds). It kept me almost entirely offline last night.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments We've had sunny weather here since Friday. Hope no storms are coming.

message 1656: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) At about 1am last night we had a huge set of storms go over us. Lots of flooding, rain, wind, hail, & lightening. Not a restful night. It was too fierce for even a pillow over my head to help much. We got another 2.5" of rain. Even on our well drained hill it's squishy, so below us it just flooded badly. Several people can't make it in since their roads are flooded. I drove in through it & it was ugly. I was down to half speed for most of my commute.

message 1657: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, sorry to hear about the flooding.

message 1658: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments The storms must have been dreadful, as I saw on TV that some people died from drowning and severaly were without homes. Alhough, I guess some were rescued and that is the good ending to the storm.

message 1659: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Yeah, pretty rough. One of our friends just a couple of miles east of us says she got 5" of rain! I don't know for sure, but the storms have been patchy &/or our gauge might be experiencing some interference from the flowers.

We had a few limbs broken out in the field that took me a couple of hours to clean up, but nothing major broken. Marg & the dogs found a snapping turtle wandering around up on our hill, well away from the ponds. I don't know why it was up here. Too late for eggs, I'd think. The dogs seemed happy enough to be called off it.

message 1660: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Glad you and your wife and animals survived the worst of the storm.

message 1661: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments We've had a strong north wind for the last couple of days and the temps have been cooler than usual for this time of year.

message 1662: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments We saw on the National news of the fires raging in
Winters, CA and that is where my grandson lives with his wife and two children. I sent him a message asking how close the fires were to his home and he answered, "Too Close." That was not exactly the answer I was hoping for but it could have been worse.

message 1663: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) For the past few days & the next week, we're getting highs of 90 going down to 70 at night. Chances of some showers, but not much & it's dried out considerably. The humidity is variable & the sun is just brutal. I think I'm feeling it more as I age.

Our back deck faces west & has been unusable after 10am during these hot periods of the summer. No way to put a roof over it since there isn't enough height to slope it properly without a major project. Marg got a 10' square canopy & we set it up by the back sliding door, tying it to the rail & eye bolts by the house. It's working out great.

Frightening. Hope all will be well.

Our back deck gets hot too. I appreciate it, though, on chilly mornings.

Nina | 6069 comments The fires in Winters went to the mountains rather than into the town where my grandson lives but they do have heavy smokey skies.

message 1667: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I guess that's no fun either, Nina.

message 1668: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments We are in for a string of ninety degree and up weather for the next week but this is normal for our weather in August. We have been lucky so far to have it in the 80's. I remember well when there was a string of over one hundred degrees for a couple of weeks. At that time I was expecting my fourth child and when the time came for me to deliver, my dr said go to the only hospital at that time that was air conditioned. Hard to imagine those days now.

message 1669: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I think we're expecting warm temps this week too.

message 1670: by Nina (last edited Aug 19, 2015 09:01AM) (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Can this be August in KS? This morning I had to wear a sweater when I took a walk. There is hardly a day without rain. I remember well one hundred degree days in August summers in the past.

message 1671: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We've had some nice cool days, too. Nothing chilly, though.

message 1672: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Nights in the fifties might be coming your way.

message 1673: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments We're still having warm temps here. Muggy too.

message 1674: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Starting out in the fifties in the morning. Can this be August? I am feeling sorry for a grandson and his wife and a granddaughter who live in the city of Spokane, WA as it is surrounded by fires. They say the smoke is terrible.

message 1675: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It's cooler here this week.

Yes, those fires are awful! The fire-fighters are very brave heroes.

message 1676: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We were in the 50's again, too. Loving it!

Sorry to hear that.

message 1680: by Mercurialgem (new)

Mercurialgem | 27 comments The thing is that it's crazy weather bc its really hot and then you get a nice cool day the next or it starts nice and cool and gets hot or it rains.....confusing. Not sure if the weather is like that anywhere else, as far as inconsistency.

message 1681: by Nina (last edited Aug 27, 2015 04:41PM) (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Where do you live in CA? I have six grandsons in the San Diego area. A grandson in the Sacremento vicinity and a graddaughter in LA suburb. My CA Redding friend says the smoke is terrible there.

message 1682: by Mercurialgem (new)

Mercurialgem | 27 comments I live by Pomona, which is in LA county.

It's hard to know how to dress when the weather is so inconsistent.

message 1684: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Long ago when I lived in the LA vicinity there were no freeways and no drought and sometimes the fog was so thick I couldn't find my way home and the hills weren't brown all winter. Mostly what I remember about winter were the smells coming from the smudge pots burning under the orange trees.

Interesting post, Nina!

Nina | 6069 comments Not often but the past week and another week to look forward to we have perfect weather. In the sixties at night and early morning and then around four o'clock it gets to the eighties. Just pleasant for early morning walks and later a visit to the garden. First day of autumn at 3:10 AM our time. Hope you have nice weather wherever you are.

message 1687: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We're about 10 degrees cooler on both ends. It is gorgeous, but it is DRY. We really need rain. None in the forecast, though.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments First day of autumn! A beautiful day... sunshine with temp at 64F.
I love today's Google-page-icon with the gourds spelling out the name, "Google".

PS-The "surprise" squirrel is so cute!

message 1689: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It is gorgeous. I'm dying to take some time off. I still have 2.5 weeks of vacation left & can only carry 1 week over, so I can certainly take a few days if I can free myself up. Marg wants me to go with her on 2 hunter paces - one in October, the other early Nov. I think they're both on a Sunday, so I'll probably take the next Monday off.

message 1691: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments That should be a nice break from computers, Jim. Joy, here is a quote for you for this first day of Autumn.

"Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall," F. Scott Fitzerald.

Nina, I like that quote. It's full of hope.

message 1693: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Perfect weather here for the past few days/cool evenings and mornings and warming in late afternoon. Just right for winning the play-offs, we hope. Right now, it's even. Last year we were one game short of winning World Series. Finally we got approval from our Grounds Committee to have a tree planted after the dieseased one was taken down. Now on Oct 30th we get a Redbud and hopefully someone will tell us how to care for it until it gets established. Just like having a new born except it sleeps outside.

message 1694: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Good luck with your new tree, Nina!

message 1695: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I hope your new redbud is in a shady spot. They don't last long out in the sun. Most of mine started having issues, even dying from a fungus, at about 6 years old except for those that are fairly well shaded. They're a second story tree by nature.

message 1696: by Nina (last edited Oct 11, 2015 04:46PM) (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Jim, A landscape architect that was hired by our Ground committee came and checked after our dead tree was taken down and he said the Redbud should be fine as long as it isn't planted where the old one came out. Not far to the east is a huge Locust tree and three others I don't know the names of and this tree is to be on the east side of our house and house will shade it from the afternoon western sun. Mostly the redbuds seem to do very well in our area. Hope ours does.

message 1697: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I hope it works out, Nina.

message 1698: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Perfect baseball weather so keeping our fingers crossed the Royals win tonight.
