Jim (jimmaclachlan) Some of the daffodils are blooming. A bit chillier today, but still nice & things are drying up well. Looks like we're in for a roller coaster of temps this week. Up to 70 & then down to freezing most of Friday.

It's still too wet to grade or harrow the fields, but maybe I can start tomorrow night, if I have time. The lawn tractor & my pickup both have flat driver's side front tires, so I need to get them fixed. I still have gravel & sod to pickup along the road, too.

I spent a couple of hours meeting a family very similar to ours. The parents & kids are about our age. They have sheep, a llama & chickens, though. Big vege gardens, too. Close to the same size farm. The daughter & I discussed spinning & I gave her some alpaca. She gave me some llama & wool, twice what I gave her, but it's very dirty. While I was there, JR, Erin's old AgEd teacher dropped by. Turns out he's the son's BIL. Both the son & the father are woodworkers, so we had a lot to talk about, too. I got to tour their shop & they're supposed to drop by to see mine sometime.

Marg was planning on coming with me, but she was tired after grocery shopping & wanted to lay down for a few minutes. She was snoring when I left, so I didn't wake her. She needed the sleep. We went for a nice little ride when I got back. Chip decided to head into the pond, so I let him. I thought he just wanted a drink, but he went in a bit further & did some splashing, too. I just pulled my legs up & let him have at it for a few minutes. It was a fun afternoon.

Nina | 6069 comments it's so nice to read about a rare afternoon even if it isn't one in June. Good for you Jim to take time out to make new friends.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments The current temp here is 11.7F. No chance of flowers... :-(

message 1404: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Poor, Joy & Jackie! I'm glad to see the warmer temps. I'm super happy that so many of my bulbs are coming up & will start sowing a lot more annual seeds soon, too. I made sure to spread the seeds from last year's.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, I admire your enthusiasm. I will just enjoy other people's gardens. :)

Nina | 6069 comments Must be spring as I was able to buy an azalea bush at Aldi's today and a very small hyacinth is blooming in my garden today. Kansas City is a lovely city in the springtime as there are so many flowering trees in the area and forsythia bushes blooming on the hillsides. I wonder if you all think of KS with no hills. Parts of western are just that but here in the eastern section our terrain is quite hilly/no mountains until you get to the MO Ozarks, however. One of our founding fathers traveled extensively as a young man in Europe and when he came home he instigated fountains and statuary galore in the city and neighboring KS so parts feel as if you are in a park from mile after mile..So much for georgraphy lesson for today.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Thanks for the geography lesson, Nina. Enjoy all those beautiful things!

message 1408: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's 18 degrees out this morning. It was 73 just 3 days ago when Chip got hot & went for a splash in the pond during our ride.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Crazy weather! Funny Chip! Speaking of ponds, one time our little Maltese, jorji, fell into the pond at our town park. It was fairly chilly that day and the water must have been cold. Poor little thing. He went too close to the ragged, weedy shoreline. It was panic-time for me. But of course we rescued him.

message 1410: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Jim, I think our weather must be coming your way. Today I wore my down coat and a scarf for my neck and Monday we are expecting seventy degrees. I feel cold now even when it's fifty if there is a cold wind blowing and I think my blood thins at thses warm days and then poof, it's cold again.

Nina | 6069 comments Did your dog break through the ice? Poor little frozen puppy.

message 1412: by Jim (last edited Mar 28, 2015 04:12PM) (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's supposed to warm up for the next week. Today it never made it out of the 30's. Lots of sunshine, but a cold wind this morning. We had a nice ride tonight & skipped playing in the pond.

The Star-of-Bethlehem flower is spreading through our fields like crazy.

It's a pretty little thing, but I had no idea it was so invasive until recently. Even RoundUp doesn't kill it all off. Nothing does, although some herbicides do a little better. Still, it will mean killing the grass, so I'll have to overseed & then do the same thing again for a few years until the bulbs are dead in the big patches. I can just spot spray or dig up the single ones.

It's a real problem even for homeowners much less farmers. Here is a good PDF on it & how various herbicides deal with controlling it.

No, the pond wasn't frozen but it was cold.

message 1414: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, the the Star-of-Bethlehem flower is lovely, invasive or not. :) Thanks for the pic. I didn't know what it looks like it until now.

message 1415: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Don't plant it & if you find it, dig it out! I read on one gardening thread about how it takes over gardens even worse that fields.

We've had a flu running around the office knocking people out for a week at a time. I hope that's NOT what I have. I didn't sleep well, kept being cold & achy even with 2 dogs & an extra afghan on the bed. I feel like crap this morning. I really don't have time for this as it's supposed to get nice again today & stay that way all week. I have far too much to do.
:(

message 1416: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Mar 29, 2015 07:33AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, I hope you will feel better soon.

PS-Don't worry about me planting anything. Those days are over for me! lol

message 1417: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Take Care, Jim/ the Star will be waiting so you don't need to hurry and degrade it while you are sick. As Joy pointed out, at least it's pretty. Too much of a good thing, I guess you could say.

message 1418: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Jim Hope you are feeling better by now. Today is a good day here for cleaning bird baths.

message 1419: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Well, I put pants on today & got the mail, but that wore me out. No, not feeling a lot better. The worst of the fever has broken, I think. Came back after I walked along one edge of the property & got some pics of the new flowers. A few of the Grecian Windflowers are up & blooming now. I wanted to try mowing some of the yard but Marg said no - vehemently. She said I'd want to do too much. I listened to her & she was right.

message 1420: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, listen to Marg!!!

message 1421: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Good for Marge. Be grateful you have a guardian angel caring for you.

message 1422: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I love your thoughtful posts. Also, from so many of your posts, I can see that you are a real "thinking" person. What a marvelous brain you must have! And you haven't lost your enthusiasm for life! I think that is so great!

message 1423: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments My that might be the best compliment of my entire life. I could say I am underserving but that might convey that it wasn't appreciated so all I can say is a heartfelt, "thank you." It comes, however, at a special time for me as my first date with my now husband was seventy years ago on Easter Sunday. We went to Mass at the downtown Catholic Cathedral and after breakfast attended the Ice Capades. Never dreaming then, we'd spend not only that day together but a lifetime.

message 1424: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, that's a long time! You must have been very young when you had your first date. Best wishes to you both!

message 1425: by Werner (new)

Werner Nina, I echo Joy's best wishes!

message 1426: by Nina (last edited Apr 01, 2015 07:48PM) (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, I was seventeen and would turn eighteen in a month. My "date" was eighteen soon to be nineteen. We were twenty and twenty one when we were married. Sometime I'll email you some data of our courtship. The fact that we married at all we think God was pulling the strings.

message 1427: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments And thanks, Joy and Werner for your wishes. They are greatly appreciated. It makes me feel blessed to "know" such nice people in goodreads, among others.

message 1428: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I'll look forward to hearing about your courtship.

message 1429: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, getting back to "The LIght that you Cannot See," even if you'd like to forget it. Ha! When I googled, St Malo it brought back so clearly some of the trauma those citizens went through during the occupation. It is a newsreel and then there is the city as it was rebuilt and stands today after it's almost total destruction. I understand it took the author ten yeers to write that book and he got the inspiration from visiting it. I was just reading another memoir of a young wonam who was visitng there and she said it was her favorite place in France. Just some added trivia.

message 1430: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Yes, Nina, I too looked up St. Malo online. It has quite a history. Anthony Doerr had a good idea when he wrote a story about what happened there in WWII. I can see why the story interested you so much.

message 1431: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I just emptied 4" of water out of the rain gauge at noon. Still raining. Glad we're up on a hill! Marg's bus run was interesting this morning, but her roads were clear. Many weren't & had to be avoided. Rock slides, water covering roads, & trees all over.

message 1432: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments And all we got was a sprinkle. We are four inches below normal.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim wrote: "...Rock slides, water covering roads, & trees all over."

I hate to see trees down. They are so precious. Glad no one was hurt.

message 1434: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) One of my newly planted tulips has started to bloom! I took a brief walk along part of the road to look at it & see how the other new bulbs are doing yesterday. They're GREAT! I think almost all of them have come up & 90% of those have bloomed, most with multiples. That's fantastic for a first year.

More amazing, they're surviving well in our bouncing temps. Yesterday, besides getting 5" of rain, we were over 70. This morning we're at 30. Last week, we had one day where we never hit the mid 30's bracketed by 60 degree days. Some have drooped, but they've kept their blooms & straightened up. I guess it helps that most are on east facing banks. That lends some protection & warms them up first thing.

Marg isn't going down to visit Erin as she planned. I am better, but still pretty rough. I slept all night in bed for the first time in a week. Not great, but pretty good. No Ibuprofen, either.

Unfortunately, Pip had his first encounter with a skunk yesterday evening & slept in his customary position in my arm pit. Marg got him washed up immediately & well, but he has a thick coat & it's impossible to get the smell out completely. I do not recommend it as a natural remedy to clear the sinuses.

message 1435: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Glad to hear you're on the mend, Jim. Enjoy your tulips! They're just in time for Easter!

message 1436: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I never realized sleeping with a skunk smelling dog cured your sinus. Live and Learn as the saying goes.

message 1437: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I now realize after reading your message the second time sleeping with a skunk smelling dog is not the recommend cure for a sinus problem. Hope you get better with a different cure. Sounds like looking at your colorful array of tulips at least is life affirming. Happy Easter to you and Marge.

message 1438: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments And Happy Easter to Jackie and Werner and the other goodreaders. I miss the egg coloring days when my six children gathered together coloring them at the kitchen table. This was long after they believed in the Easter Bunny, which they all did.

message 1439: by Werner (new)

Werner Happy Easter to you too, Nina! (Barb and I will be coloring eggs with our grandkids this evening. :-) )

message 1440: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Happy Easter to all!

message 1441: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Nina wrote: "I never realized sleeping with a skunk smelling dog cured your sinus. Live and Learn as the saying goes."

It doesn't, just ruins the appreciation of being able to smell again.
;)

message 1442: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments At least you made me smile, Jim.

message 1443: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Brrr... 32 here this morning. It was 31 yesterday morning, so I guess this is an improvement, although it doesn't feel like it. We're supposed to edge into the 60's by the afternoon & it should be a pretty day. I hope to get the rest of my seeds planted. The next 2 days have chances of thunderstorms, but should start off warmer, at least mid 40's.

message 1444: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Current temp here is 33.7. I'm sure it will warm up later. The sun is shining! My son brought me roses yesterday. So at least we have some flowers. :)

message 1445: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Forties at seven Am when we were en route to church. Does anyone else go to seven thirty Mass that early? Not many. But, expect for a cool wind it wss in the upper sixties by mid-afternoon.Supposed to be in the seventies in the daytime rest of week and then in forites at night. I have tulips blooming and two hibiscus blooms on the bush that I overwinter inside. the squirrels are trying their best to dig up my bulbs/they have been planted twice.

message 1446: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Oh, what joy to have roses delivered by a son. Happy Easter in the form of flowers is best of all. Seventy years ago my husband and I had our first date on Easter Sunday.

message 1447: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We got into the low 60's today. It was gorgeous out. I got the rest of the flower seeds I had planted today. Need to get more sunflowers. Lots of Jupiter's Beard, Zinnia, marigolds, & several others. I had some Moon flower seeds from a friend & am trying some Four O'Clocks for a change, too. The banks should look pretty.

It's hot enough that the ponies are shedding like crazy. Chip splashed happily in the pond on our ride tonight. Marg has been scraping hair off Speedy for 10-15 minutes every night. His stall looks like a pack of rabbits died there. She had to clip under his chin, neck, & chest. He's not shedding there properly any more. Old age, I guess. His belly is getting matted now. His hair is 4-5" long, longer than ever before, too.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Family visited this weekend. I'm bushed. :)

message 1449: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Jim, Sounds as if you are feeling better. Joy, one of my friends at church yesterday was having 55 for dinner. Were there that many at your home?

message 1450: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments No, Nina. We were only 14. We went out to eat.
