Very true. They've been contracted for 3 more books. I hope it goes longer. Their books are like Patricia Brigg's--You don't want them to ever end. :)

Alisa That's funny you guys posted about Mercy cuz I had planned to start my post on how I was officially breaking up with that series. I just finished Frost Burned (Mercy Thompson, #7) by Patricia Briggs and I barely finished it. I don't know why but the magic is gone for me in that series.

Now Kate.....still love her as much as ever. Just finished Magic Breaks (Kate Daniels, #7) by Ilona Andrews and loved it.

Trying to decide whether to start Crave The Night (Midnight Breed, #12) by Lara Adrian or Blood Games (Chicagoland Vampires, #10) by Chloe Neill I think I'm going with the Midnight Breed one. Merit and Ethan have been on my "maybe going to break up w/them list" and I haven't heard good things about this book so far.

I kinda of feel the same about the Mercy series. Good writing-good tale, but I have the third which I will read when I feel like it and I'm not sure when that will be.

I like The Dragon bones books--I thought I read somewhere about a third one--and her first book with its sequel "Masques" Or was that the title of the first one? I can't get to my copy at the moment. Anyway, Briggs is a great writer, but there's something about Mercy.

L.E. Doggett (ldwriter2) | 24 comments Alisa one thing about the Grendel Affair. Seanan McGuire has out a new UF series which I read the first one. Very different from October Daye. Anyway, wrote a review on one blog post of both Shearin's book and McGuire's because it's almost like bother writers used the same outline. Completely different characters and adventures, but both are so similar. Both even have dragons in New York City, but they purpose of said dragons are so different.

I'll have to check the Grendel Affair out. I actually haven't read any of Seanan McGuire yet. I've only read her stuff she writes as Mira Grant.

I thought it started out really slow, but did like when Nathan explained why it seemed like he was so cold.

message 2011: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (readingonthefly) Finished up with Polterheist (Esther Diamond, #5) by Laura Resnick and went right into The Misfortune Cookie (Esther Diamond, #6) by Laura Resnick . I really wish the author would go somewhere with the Esther/Lopez and the Lopez's powers plots. She seems to be spinning her wheels on both fronts and, after six books, it's wearing thin.

Also read Unzipped (A Chrissy McMullen Mystery, #1) by Lois Greiman and Dauntless (The Lost Fleet, #1) by Jack Campbell over the weekend. May go into The Lost Fleet #2 since I'm still in a mood for military sci fi.

I liked Nathan but didn't care for the heroine. The 20 something year old virgin heroine never works for me. That's a big old eye roll. I also don't like insta-love. I know some is expected in pnr but I just can't buy totally emotional scarred guy meets above mentioned virgin, has sex w/her and boom in a week he's healed and they're mated. Plus there was too much of him "touching her petals" and "rubbing her nub". Petals and nubs never work for me either.

LOL.....yeah I bet. **shuddering**

Midnight Breed was my very first pnr so maybe it's just that my tastes have changed over the years but I remember the original stories to be better, less cheesey. I don't like seeing the original guys all up tight bureaucrats either. It's bad enough I've had to age and get boring in real life. I don't want to see my bad assed vampire hotties get that way. lol

I didn't really think about it until you mentioned it, but you are right about the "old" guys being uptight.

I did like how she grew up the kids, but it does give the series a different feel. I'm also not sure how I feel about the Atlantean story line. It seems off to me.

Chase was like a harried soccer mom. He was such a hot mess in the original series (although he was one of my very favorites) and yet he had no insight or sympathy to what Nathan was going thru until the very end. That made no sense to me. I wanted some big heart to heart between them.

I originally thought the 20 year jump was a brilliant idea but honestly the execution is not working for me. I agree that the Atlantean story line is off. I've yet to care about the story line in either of the two new series books. I've only been interested in what's happening w/the characters we already know.

I have read the first two. Good reading even though not my favorite.

But I kinda of forgot them for three or so new books and I need to search for the ones I have read, to make sure I restart the newer series at the right book.

I'm way late with this but I still want to say that McGuire is one of two my top UF writers. I love Butcher and one you may not have head of, John Levitt and even love Benedict Jacka but McGuire is above them all----in my opinion.

Maybe I should say that the other top writer is C. E. Murphy. I use them both as examples and models for my own writing.

They're not my favorite either. And reading them back to back really highlights how formulaic they were. Plus, the two main female characters were starting to really annoy me. One is emotionally distant with the hero and the other worships the ground he walks on. Yeah, time for a break. :)

I finished Thieftaker (Thieftaker Chronicles, #1) by D.B. Jackson and I liked it enough to read on to book two but until I can get my hands on it I've moved on to Darkwalker (Nicolas Lenoir, #1) by E.L. Tettensor .

4 out of 5 stars

Escape from the system?

Sports journalist Russell Martell is on holiday in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico . His wife Rosalita has recently died and Russell feels lost and hurt, drifting through life. Then his journalistic senses begin to come alive as he starts to get the hints of stories: not sports stories, but crime and current events, with a hint of politics. What is the real story behind a body found in strange circumstances near the beach front? Is the rumor of a police raid on a suburban house really connected to drug cartels? Who is the colorful character Devon (Devo) that appears to be making a splash in town, at least according to the bar scuttlebutt? All these questions seem to draw together, but only more questions emerge. Soon Russell and his friend, Johnny Miles, will become caught up in an adventure where mystery and uncertainty abounds. How will ordinary citizens survive, let alone take action in a world of gangs, police and government? Seve Verdad’s Finding Devo: A Novel Adventure is a story of mystery and action which will intrigue and excite the reader as they follow Russell and Johnny in their desperate attempt to escape disaster.

That's just the way it is outside the US. It'll eventually be cheaper, but probably never as cheap as you can get it. And we're not talking exchange rates here cause there isn't much difference between the $ & the AU$.

It was absolutely great! Wilson managed to pack a lot of stuff into this book, and the world building is still amazing! We're given a clue of what the next book is about, but it's not even up on GR yet :(
It doesn't really matter though because it's a standalone unlike the Tairen books, but still... a long wait...
