Bluegrass #3

Snow Falling on Bluegrass

Rate this book
Parks & Recreation meets The Blue Collar Comedy Tour in this third ebook in Molly Harper’s Bluegrass series of contemporary romances: A love triangle of colleagues heats up the winter lodge where they get snowed in for a week.

Kentucky Tourism Commission employee and executive assistant extraordinaire Kelsey is known around the office for having everything under control. So it’s not surprising that she and her boss, Sadie, have everything planned to the second for the office winter retreat. But there are things even Kelsey can’t micromanage.

An unprecedented snowstorm smothers half of Kentucky and knocks out the power, closes the roads, and generally shuts down the state. Luckily, the lodge has working fireplaces and enough food to keep the staff from turning on each other like something out of The Shining. Kelsey wouldn’t mind being stuck inside if it wasn’t for the tension with her not-so-secret crush, Charlie, the office’s statistician. But handsome Ranger Luke, the lodge’s only employee on hand, is there to take Kelsey’s mind off her discomfort.

Even though this weekend is supposed to be a planning session for KTC, Kelsey can’t help her mind from wandering and finds herself conflicted over Luke and Charlie. Someone’s love will keep her warm, but whose will it be?

The Story
4.5 LOL Stars! I love the people of the KTC and want to work with them!!

This was quick read, but it was big on laughs. Molly Harper is one of the most consistent writers I’ve ever had the pleasure to read. Her fun engaging plots, quirky charming characters, and entertaining storytelling is something that this author has down pat, and she does it so well.

I adored Kelsey from the first book, My Bluegrass Baby, and she was just as fun and witty here. I missed some of the characters and familiarity in the 2nd book, Rhythm and Bluegrass, but have no fear, that odd bunch from the KTC is back and they added so much to Kelsey’s journey to love in Snow Falling on Bluegrass.

The story centers around a love/attraction triangle between Kelsey, Charlie, a sweet character we are familiar with from the first book, and Luke, a charming new character. When a snow and ice storm has the three of them, along with the employees from the Kentucky Tourism Commission trapped at the lodge where Luke has provided them with accommodations, things become a bit crazy. Kelsey doesn’t know which direction her heart should take, but everyone from that zany group has to have their say and they don’t hold back. They speak their mind and we are the beneficiaries of the laughs! Some of them employ tactics to help her decide and at the same time exact their own form of revenge.

One of the highlights of the read was seeing where Sadie and Josh are in their relationship, as well as Bonnie and Will! I wasn’t a big fan of the latter couple’s book, but I really enjoyed them here. The book’s overall appeal doesn’t just apply to a few characters and their romantic dilemmas, but all the characters, how they annoy each other, and at the same time look out for one another. Fun times all around!

Even though the right guy got the girl, my hope is that the other guy will get a story too! After being a little disappointed with the last book, I’m glad to say that Snow Falling on Bluegrass put this series back on track and has me yearning for it to go on!

5 Big Stars for the brilliant Amanda Ronconi!

I can’t imagine anyone else giving a voice to this writer’s words! It’s a wonderful relationship between author and narrator, and an enjoyable experience for the listener. Molly Harper is the clever, capable author of Snow Falling on Bluegrass but it almost feels like Amanda Ronconi may have had a hand in it somewhere along the line, even if it’s just her voice in the author’s head when she writes. I know this author stands on her own talent and I can’t take anything away from her amazing storytelling, but when Harper’s books are narrated by the gifted Ronconi, they take on new life and are even better!

For an avid audiobook listener like me, having this talented narrator’s voice in my ears is like hitting the listening jackpot!

If you’ve never plugged into an audiobook, but want to see what it’s about, give the Harper/Ronconi team a try. You won’t be disappointed!

The book kept me smiling, giggling and laughing. If not for the plot hole with time lapses and miscommunication as a means for conflict, I might have given it a higher rating. But time passage leaving plenty of time for the "talk" to happen but didn't was noticeable. Time passage overall was ambiguous. But the design of the plot put emphasis on time that wasn't handled well. Anyway, it's a light funny read I would still recommend.

Kelsey is the best person to have around in a crisis. She's prepared for just about anything and can turn a disaster into a success. But when the staff of the Kentucky Tourism Commission find themselves stranded and without power after a once in a hundred year blizzard even her organisational skills will be stretched.

Adding to her problems, Charlie, the guy she has secretly loved for years has been acting strangely around her and as cabin fever hits, her co-workers go on the warpath. If that's not enough, her ex won't leave her alone and now that Charlie finally seems to be noticing her, a sexy ranger decides to muddy the waters and express his interest.

It's quite difficult to review this book, not because it isn't good, it's very good. No, it's difficult because what I want to say I've said before. Snow Falling on Bluegrass is filled with witty banter and snark. It is funny, sometimes laugh out loud funny. Molly Harper delivers a book that is cute and quirky but in no way is it dumb. She's one of my favorite authors and I don't see that changing any time soon.

Many thanks to Pocket Star and Netgalley for providing me with this ARC

While on a business "team building" retreat, an eclectic group of co-workers get stranded at a beautiful resort. A massive snow storm along with fallen trees leave them without power and cuts them off from the outside world. Confinement exaggerates usually masked, quirky and laughable personality traits while relationships unfold and evolve.
This is not Molly Harpers usual paranormal comedy but it is still a very character driven, witty and humorous story of survival. A fun, light adventure that is upbeat with just enough romance to keep it interesting. Amanda Ronconi is the perfect narrator for Molly Harpers' books.

4 "Being Snowed In Brings Love To Light" Stars for both the story and the narration!

This was a fun, snarky, somewhat crazy co-workers' love story. Who knew working for the Kentucky State Tourism Commission could be so much fun! Add in a rather narcissistic ex, a meddlesome mother and some Facebook posts that lead to an ill-timed misunderstanding and you have a recipe for a delightful listen. Amanda Ronconi's narration further rounds out this audiobook with an authentic Southern twang to her delivery that will leave you believing you've actually traveled to Kentucky.

Although this is the third book in Molly Harper's Bluegrass series of contemporary romances, it can easily be read as a standalone, as the romance between the main couple, as well as a potential love triangle, is self-contained in this book. Once you've listened to this story, however, you will no doubt want to go back and explore some of the other love stories amongst this eclectic group of co-workers.

The Kentucky Tourism Commission employees are headed to their winter retreat to unwind and brainstorm new tourism initiatives. Unbeknownst to them, however, a huge winter storm causes their carefully crafted plans to be interrupted. While they made it to their destination, the snowstorm of the century takes out the electricity and causes all the roads to be closed, leaving them with no choice but to make do as best as they can manage in the lodge. Fortunately the lodge has enough supplies to keep them from being the next Donner Party, even if the resulting living is definitely on the Spartan side.

Amongst this chaos, secrets start to become revealed and potential crushes are hard to deny. In particular, Kelsey, the executive assistant to the office's boss, has harbored a crush on Charlie, the office's statistician, for quite some time, but his actions towards her are less than clear. Charlie, in turn, has his own reasons for his seemingly odd behavior. As if this weren't complicated enough, the lodge's ranger, Luke, is also making his attraction towards Kelsey known. Can a few days of weather imposed, forced communal living lead to a potential HEA?

Amanda Ronconi does a good job with the narration. She is able to create genuine male and female voices, and creates slightly nuanced intonations among the same-sex characters to allow for ease of listening without having to generally rely on dialogue tags. Additionally, Ms. Ronconi has great timing with the numerous humorous lines, thereby ensuring that they deliver their maximum comical punch.

My favorite voice is that of Kelsey's. Ms. Ronconi sounds like a natural Southerner, and expertly brings to life Kelsey's snarky, somewhat quirky, personality. Additionally, she is able to imbue her performance with just the right amount of angst, frustration and eventually confidence, which allows Kelsey's character to expertly bring closure to the persons who previously frustrated her efforts to achieve a HEA.

All in all, SNOW FALLING ON BLUEGRASS is a well done audiobook which is sure to warm your heart and cause plentiful laughs. This was my first experience with Molly Harper's contemporary romances, and I will no doubt be looking for more of her works in the future.

So, the super efficient heroine is no longer with dragging her down boyfriend, so finally her co-worker Charlie who she has a thing for, suddenly looks like a possibility. Coupled with a sexy ranger, stranded in a snow-storm with all her co-workers this book is vintage Molly Harper.

First Thought:

I knew I was going to love Kelsey's story!

The Story:

Kelsey and Charlie's story reminded me a little of Pam and Jim on The Office but with Molly Harper's flare.

Kelsey has been dating this looser for a few years while having a crush on her coworker and friend Charlie. Everyone has told Kelsey over and over that she deserves better than Darrell (the looser boyfriend). After three years of taking Darrell's crap, Kelsey decides she is going to make their latest breakup stick. But Kelsey doesn't tell anyone that they broke up and a few weeks later. She's afraid of having people tell her "I told you so" or have them looking at her with petty.

Charlie is the geeky yet sexy the office’s statistician. He great with math and statistics but not so great with social skills. But Kelsey has been his friend and bridge between others in the office, helping Charlie get their jokes. Lately Charlie has been running hot and cold with Kelsey and she doesn't know why and it has really hurt her feelings.

Once the couple and the rest of the office gets snowed in during a freak ice storm while at a lodge for a team building weekend. That's were things really start getting interesting for the group. And for Kelsey and Charlie, not to mention their host for the weekend the sexy park ranger, Luke.

Final Thought:

I really hope that Ranger Luke gets his own book. He was yummy and I want him to get his own HEA.

Recommend:

I highly recommend SNOW FALLING ON BLUEGRASS by Molly Harper to people that love reading about quirky heroines and sexy geeks while getting hot and bothered in a pillow fort.

Even though these were shorter and a bit fluffier, they were the perfect reads for me right now. Even though I think the shorter format made it so some things I normally love were missing, I still thoroughly enjoyed all the characters and loved the way this snowed in setting allowed us to catch up with them all. I adored Kelsey and Charlie and Kelsey's lost boys and only wished we could have gotten more. I can't wait to read Molly's full series.

This was a good story. I liked Kelsey but I found her reasoning (in the relationship area) to be faulty and kind of annoying at times. I liked Charlie and wished I'd have gotten more of him in the story.

Kelsey works at the Kentucky tourism commision and does a great job at organization and tackling problems. Kelsey's parents are around but she doesn't seem to see them much. I can't blame her since her mother is hard to deal with and makes her feel like a failure constantly. Kelsey has been involved with a guy named Darryl for the last couple years but he's a real jerk and they finally broke up (for good this time) a few weeks ago.

Charlie is a mathematician that works statistician for the Kentucky tourism commission. Charlie's father is a great mathematician and is a professor at a university. Charlie's family looks down on his interests and thinks he's wasting his time working for the KTC. Charlie's a bit socially awkward and Kelsey tends to help him out at work so he understands and integrates with his co-workers better.

The whole KCT team is going to a lodge for a team retreat and strategy session...something where they do team building activities and plan the tourism promotions they want to use in the next year. They all meet at work to load into the van and drive to the lodge together so it's uncomfortable for Kelsey when Darryl decides to come and see her off, just in order to give her some bills for credit accounts he opened in her name (without her permission) to buy things he wanted. Kelsey takes them and tells him to go but when she gets in the van, she doesn't bother to tell anyone they've broken up and lets them assume Darryl was there to see her off in a good way.

This is pretty much what bothered me about Kelsey...she's been in love with Charlie for years but was going out with Darryl this whole time. She thinks Charlie is a good guy and yet she seemed to think he had no interest in her because he didn't make a move on her while she was involved with Darryl. Kelsey then decided to give up on Charlie, positive he's not interested in her when she never actually gave him a chance because a good guy wouldn't go after her while she's involved with someone else. When they all arrive at the lodge, they get snowed in without electricity. The one lodge employee there, Luke, shows an interest in Kelsey but it's not a true love triangle. Considering they're snowed in together, it takes a surprisingly long time for Charlie and Kelsey to recognize the mutual attraction between them...and that's only once Kelsey finally admits that she and Darryl are over. Most of this story is drama because even once they figure this out, there's still other things that come up to cause issues for them. Thankfully, things get worked out and the story ends with Charlie and Kelsey working towards a HEA together.

This was an enjoyable story. I always like the feel of Harper's storytelling...she has such a fun way of writing. I usually like Harper's heroines better but Kelsey bothered me a bit because the way she handled things with Charlie. It was messed up because she faulted him for not doing one thing and then later in the story, she faulted him doing it (if slightly switched around). I actually liked Charlie but he didn't get as much page time as I would have liked. Overall, the story was enjoyable and I liked it. :)

* note - I listened to the audio version of this book and the narrator did a great job.

Snow Falling on Bluegrass was a sweet story, with quirky characters and some drama.

What was supposed to be a planned weekend for the KTC's employees, turned into an entire week when a snowstorm came by. And now, they're stuck into their lodge without any electricity. It's the opportunity for Kelsey to explore her feelings with Charlie, the statistician she fell in love with. He's been a little distant lately but now that she got ride of her douchey ex-boyfriend, it's the perfect timing for them to get to know each other better.

About the "love triangle", I wouldn't really call it that. I mean, yes Kelsey has both Charlie and Luke interested in her but there wasn't any hard feelings. I wasn't torn between the two men even if I liked both of them. I wouldn't mind having Luke's story too. I'm also glad that Gina and Kelsey's ex had some kind of payback for their behaviors.

A quick, fun and easy read. I loved the characters and their sense of humor. I enjoyed reading this book and it can be read as a stand alone, but if you've read the two first books in the series you'll be pleased to see both couples here too.

Long-time readers know I adore Molly Harper and the combination of her novels with Amanda Ronconi's narration. They are ear candy for me, pure entertainment. No matter how bad my day is or how poor my mood is, they never fail to cheer me up. This last book in Ms. Harper's Bluegrass series is exactly what I hoped it would be. There are some sexy times but most of it follows our heroine as she grows and becomes independent. Sassy without being impolite, strong, organized, and proud of her abilities, Kelsey is a reminder that we should never let others define who we are and how we feel about ourselves. I will reiterate that if you have never had the pleasure of listening to one of Ms. Harper's novels, I cannot recommend them highly enough.

This one was fun. Finally got to the Kelsey and charlie set up they've been mentioning every book. I liked the snowed plot but wish there could have been more to do with it than just being locked in and one venture out into the wilderness. Maybe a little more danger involved ha.

It was a quick fun romantic read though. Molly Harper books are always fun.

Your average madcap contemporary romance with a few misunderstandings. I was so glad there weren't a ton like usual. The bad guy gets it in the end in a hilarious fashion. True love triumphs. Do you notice my sarcastic tone? If not, good. The book was okay. I think I just read this book at the wrong time - it wasn't enough to lighten my spirits during this COVID stuff. 3 stars

Jumping back into the office shenanigans of the Kentucky Commission on Tourism, Snow Falling on Bluegrass sets up listeners/readers for the potential romance between Kelsey and Charlie. Since the first book in Ms. Harper’s Bluegrass series, we’ve known Kelsey has it BAD for Charlie, but stayed with her loser live-in boyfriend because she felt she didn’t deserve better. Well, loser Darryl got a “better offer,” leaving Kelsey weeks ago, and it finally sunk in how horrible of a man he was. Now, off on a long-weekend work retreat, Kelsey is looking for some rebound action, and park ranger Luke, may be just the one to fulfill her needs.

Picking up after the events of the first two books, the KTC staff is back together and trapped without power when a freak snow storm hits Kentucky. After missing most of the characters in the previous book, I was both thankful and happy to have Sadie, Josh, the "nerd herd," and even some new employees, all together again. They play off one another in the silliest of ways, and their situation is ripe with hilarious opportunities.

I appreciate that although the book blurb and earlier parts of the story set the stage for a love triangle, the focus truly is on Charlie and Kelsey. I love Josh's character and would have loved for him to have his own book... maybe someday *sigh*

I do like Charley and Kelsey together. They had some good-sized hurdles to jump, and therefore, I appreciate that their story ends with an HFN and a promise of more to come. Between denying their own feelings for years and the fear of losing a friendship, both characters have made some poor decisions over the past three years. I was not happy at the continual delays in get it all out, but in the end, I liked the way it all went down.

Once again, the book is narrated by Amanda Ronconi. While I noticed that the three primary females (Sadie, Bonnie, Kelsey) all have very similar voices, each fitting for a first person POV, as well as, the individual characters, who were all similarly silly and somewhat neurotic, Ms. Ronconi did an excellent job mixing up the male voices. She kept Josh, Will, and now Charlie, consistent from book to book, each easily identifiable and mostly unique. I enjoy Ms. Ronconi’s narration, so the fact that the characters tend to bleed over doesn’t necessarily bother me, it just made it difficult to discern who was talking sometimes. But overall she does a great job with Ms. Harper’s characters, giving them wit, sarcasm, and soulfulness.

Overall, Snow Falling on Bluegrass is yet another enjoyable, silly romp into Western Kentucky with some extremely likable characters. This third, and presumably final title, in the series was probably my favorite, as I had come to know the characters, becoming invested in their well-being. I liked that Charlie and Kelsey finally got their feelings out in the open, but didn’t rush into forever, knowing they needed to take it slow and savor every moment.

My Rating: B+
Narration: A-

My Review:
I love books where the hero/heroine get snowed in so I definitely enjoyed this one. And the fact that the whole quirky crew from the Kentucky tourism board got snowed in with them just made this one that much better. I love all these characters and would be tempted to go to work if I could work with a group of people like these.

But this book is about Kelsey and Charlie. Charlie is the resident math geek...he runs the numbers for the tourism board and Kelsey has had a crush on him ever since he joined their team. But she's also had a boyfriend (off and on) that whole time too. Besides, they have a great friendship. She doesn't want to ruin that. But Kelsey has finally had it with her ex and kicked him out for good...something that she realizes was a better idea with each day that passes because the guy was an A+ grade douche. And Charlie is not. Charlie is the opposite of her ex. Normally he's sweet and considerate, but lately he's been running hot and cold.

And that's where hunky park ranger Luke comes in. Luke is at the lodge as an emergency worker...the lodge shut down with the weather coming in, but the tourism team didn't get the message and by the time they arrive, the weather has gotten too bad to turn around. So they are stuck there...for a couple of weeks.

This book was PURE Molly Harper style fun. There were quips throughout the book that made me laugh out loud constantly. But the romance between Kelsey and the men worked too. I enjoyed the scenery in the book and the pillow fort was absolutely the best. I also loved the team-building jeopardy.

Every time I read one of these books I swear I'm going to take a vacation in Kentucky. They are fun and snarky, but also filled with all the beauty of the state and I feel like Molly Harper should really be getting paid by the state because she does an amazing job selling the state and it's quirks and fun. And I definitely want to go to this lodge...hmm, I wonder if it really exists. I think this calls for a google search.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

This was really disappointing. I expected a lot from Kelsey and Charlie as the adorably nerdy couple. What I ended up reading consisted of contrived conflict that was just unnecessary and drawn out. You see, Kelsey and Charlie have been in love with each other but didn't want to risk their friendship. Therefore, they dated other people. Well, Kelsey stayed with her boyfriend. Kelsey wasn't exactly sure what Charlie's dating status was.

I thought the writing was inconsistent. One minute she was insecure about her worth, the next she knew she was gorgeous. One minute she has been in love with him for years, the next she is mad that he didn't come out and say he loved her too.

By the time I was reading the last pages, I was just exasperated. I can sense poorly written and contrived conflict when I read it. This was poorly written and contrived. The reason I say it, it doesn't fit the character. It was drawing out a misunderstanding needlessly and frankly, I expected a lot better from the author.

I was really looking forward to the nerdy Kelsey and Charlie. Sadly, they did not live up to their awesome reputation. I'm just really disappointed.

Story Brief: The gang gets stuck in a cottage after an ice storm traps them. Kelsey is single but nobody knows it. She meets Luke, who is attracted to her. They deal with a blackout. She confides in her single status to Charlie. She has a snow day with Charlie. They have sex. She snoops through his phone and discovers that he has a gorgeous girlfriend. She is enraged that he had sex with her while he was in a relationship. She ignores him. He clarified matters that he is single. It turned out, Gina deleted the texts that show he and the girl called it off. Her ex kept pestering her about the debts he racked up. They have a nerdy revenge. Her ex's corvette end up being filled with popcorns.

I'm so disappointed by this book.

An enjoyable read- very funny! The characters are well written and really add to the story. My first book by Molly Harper and can’t wait to read more.
A team building weekend has been organised at a lodge- and when they are snowed in by a heavy snowstorm they have to settle in for an unplanned break in the snow. There is no electricity – but open fires create the atmosphere. Luckily there is plenty of food.
Kelsey is stranded with Charlie- who has been distant recently . She recently split from her ex and Charlie really likes her. There is also Luke the park ranger who is very sexy. Will there be a love triangle????

With many thanks to the publisher and Net Galley for the chance to read this book.

Another great "listen" by Molly Harper and Amanda Ronconi. This time the story is about the Kentucky Tourism Commission uber-efficient assistant Kelsey and nerdy/sexy statistician Charlie. The KTC gets snowbound for a week at a resort during their conference and, oh what games can be played in the snow.

All the characters from the KTC office appear in the novel, but I am really glad that Kelsey got her own story. Oh, and I love her guy friends who pull out on the stops with Project Icarus and attack Kelsey's ex-boyfriend Darryl.

So, so silly. Some fun parts and I did finish it so that means at least a two star rating. The little quips about Kentucky were fun because I lived there but I found the characters kind of dumb and the plot very cliche'. The relationship the main character has with her smart, nerdy neighbors would have been kind of fun if she hadn't stole that idea from The Big Bang TV show. Don't bother unless you've lived in Kentucky and you want to hear some tidbits about the state.

Fun with some amusing observations on people etc in Molly's inimitable style. Loved the nerd boys, Charlie (also a nerd boy) and Kelsey who is clearly a nerd as well, but also particularly useless at shoving d*cky boyfriends off the perch (revealed at the beginning of the story, so not a spoiler)...
