This is a thread where you can reserve the letters which you are reading to knock that block off. I will keep track on the master list which letters people are working on.

Here are the rules:

Scripts Tower
To read a total of 104 books with the following categories:
a. First name of author starting with the letter… (A-Z)
b. Last name of author starting with the letter … (A-Z)
c. First word in title starting with the letter… (A-Z) (ignoring the, a, & an)
d. Name (of a person / character) in title starting with the letter… (A-Z)

For the hard letters (Q, X, Z) an exception is being made for the word / name to contain the letter (rather than starting with).

Clarification on 'd' - the intent is for the name in title to refer to a person's name. For example, The Winter Rose may not count as it references to a flower whilst Rose by Any Other Name counts as the Rose here is actually a character in the book. It still counts if Rose is not really a character in the book but only if you can justify that it is a name of a person rather than a flower. Only First Names and ignore series name (subtitle okay)
There is no limitation to page numbers / editions.

Further clarification of item d from Tien - My apologies to all as it seems I have not been able to explain coherently what I'm looking for with the 'name in title' issue. As I said previously, the intention is for a person's name however I'll provide you all with a rule of thumb instead (which may prompt some of you to review your choices) and that is...

"Is it a name which you would name your child by? If yes, then by all means..."

So I thought I didn't have many books with characters names in the title...but when I checked my TBR, 6 of the first 10 books have the name of a person! I couldn't believe it!

Not that I think I'll get all of them. I mean, there's a reason Don Quijote has been in my TBR for like a million years.

I don't think this even this challenge would get me to read that one, lol. I would love to someday, but not when others are relying on me. HOWEVER......If one of you two wanted to tackle it, I would be more than happy to reserve it for you. ;P

I definitely wouldn't name my kid 'Quijote' but that is the name of the character. Does that mean that I couldn't use it for the challenge?

Sorry, Tien. I don't mean to be a pest about this issue. I just think that if the book has the name/nickname of the main character in the title, then it must be an important clue about the character and I don't see why we couldn't use it.

(I get the ban on last names but not on weird names.)

Just a couple of housekeeping issues

1. I apologize that I am not on line as much as some people, but I promise to log in at least once each day to check the thread. As of this time, I will post a message telling you what the last post I have updated for is.

2. Please check the master list at the beginning of this thread to see what choices have already been reserved before making your choices. It might be good to also check any posts made after my post telling you what the last post I have updated for is as I will be reserving items in the order that they are posted.

3. The only exception to #2 is in the case of the LAST Snakes & Ladders winner, who has yet to make their initial choices. Their initial 5 choices supersede all others, so once that person has made their choices, I will let you know if it changes any of the choices that have already been reserved.

Darcy - I love the Thursday Next books by Jasper Fforde. Unfortunately, we are still deciding on the rules for the character name in title, but as it stands now, the rule is:

As I read this, the name Thursday is not a valid person's name even though it is the character's name.

Actually, I think you are off the hook on this one, lol. As I re-read the rule, last names are not allowed, and the character's name is actually Don Juan Quixote, right? So Quixote is his last name. I admit, this is becoming much harder than I originally thought it would be. :)

that said, I am leaving you with the character's name Q as you said that you found others that fit. Is that still the case?

Actually, you're wrong. The character's name is Don Quijote de la Mancha. Quijote is his first name and de la Mancha is his last name. Don is an honorific title meaning Sir, so that's not his first name either.

Don Juan is another character altogether.

I think I'll stay away from the names in titles then. It's weird to me that I couldn't read "Othello" or "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" for the challenge just because I wouldn't name my kid that. It's still the characters' name and how they are known.

So please Lyn, can you please remove me from the 'Q'? The whole point of that was that I was trying to read Don Quijote but if I cannot, then I won't bother.

I might have to remove my name one as well - I wouldn't name a kid Calpurnia - but that is the name of the mc in the book...i think this ruling needs to be revisited

I read the rule to mean a name that someone would actually name their child - the "you" not being exactingly personal.

i'm so confused right now that i don't know what the policy is - at first I understood it to be name as long as it matched a character in a book (hence Bitterblue for example would work because that was a mc's name), but then it was clarified to something that you would name a kid (ruling BB out, even though, in that world it is a name)...thus my confusion
