I've got the last 20 years done but the first 20 years or so are taking ALOT more work. lol

Briansgirl--find an author you like who's "been around for a while." Then, check to see what s/he has written that is older. Much as I HATE to mention her, Barbara Cartland is one. Also Anne MacCaffrey, Terry Pratchett, Robert Heinlein, Arthur C. Clark, Larry Niven. . .

I do have some Barbara Cartland books but no idea what years they are. I've sorted my virtual GRs shelves by year and started looking at what choices I had. Most of the authors I like now, didn't write in the '60s and '70s. The one author who did write in the 70s that I have her stuff, I havn't wanted to read anymore once I learned she settled out of court and admitted to plagarism. I did discover that the novel MASH that the movie and later the TV series was based on was written in 1968 so read that. I found one sequel, MASH in Paris that was written in 1975 that I've set aside to read. And WWII novel (and later movie) Where Eagles Dare by Alistair MacLean was written in 1967. Have to get that one from the library. I've got something for every year that I could read, it's just not always something I want to read.

Alistair MacLean had several of his books made into movies. in addition to Eagles he had--Guns of Navarone (Anthony Quinn and Gregory Peck), Force 10 from Navarone, The Partisans, Breakheart Pass, The Way to Dusty Death, Ice Station Zebra (Rock Hudson, Ernast Borgnine) and at least 1 more--possibly as many as 3. But those are the ones that I can think of off the top of my head.

On the MASH books--there were quite a few of those--8? 9? Maybe 10?? The second book in the series was MASH Goes to Maine, and dealt with Hawkeye and Trapper's return to civilian life. I think that the 1 after that was MASH goes to New Orleans. lol, can you tell that I'm a fan? :o)

I ordered the MASH novel used online and found MASH goes to Paris at a used bookstore out-of-state. I havn't found any others yet and I don't think my library has any.

I've been gathering a collection of used Alistair MacLean novels. I've read Ice Station Zebra and the library has the movie which is good. I've seen the Guns of Navarone and Force 10 from Navarone but havn't read them yet but I have finally found copies of those books. Either these books are for years I've already got covered, or don't need, with the exception of Where Eagles Dare which I'm going to read for 1967.

I thinking about this. I just don't know about the older books. It might be fun to go back and read something like Future Shock by Alvin Toffler or maybe an old John Updike novel. However, being born in '69, I have a lot of old crap to wade through.

I was born in '67 Jim, so I'm right there with ya. I've got mostly the '60s and '70s left to read with a few '80s thrown in. I started last April and got the last 20 years done, so now moving backward to fill in the older stuff.

Geeze, Jim and BG--you 2 are BABIES. Mostly I'm just reading this thread, because I don't really want to do the research (or take the "easy" way out and just read sci-fi/fantasy by a couple of writers that I KNOW were publishing during my early years.) But my REAL job is heckling you babies who are complaining about how hard it is to find something to read from your formative years. lol, now, if it were my Aunt JUNE--I might have sympathy. You know what kinds of TRIPE they were publishing in 1930? And yeah, she's also a major book worm. :o)

I'm actually reading alot of books Ann that I can't use as they were written before I was born. The hard part is if you're trying to stick with romance books for every year. The further I go back, the less romance I'm reading.

Kate, have you looked into Mary Stewart, Georgette Heyer, Victoria Holt, Elizabeth Mansfield, Phyllis Whitney, Joan Wolf - or do none of those appeal?

Most of Heyer's books were written before you were born (you little kid!) but 3 of them would work: 1968, 1970, 1972

Wolf books are all in your lifetime, beginning in 1980

Victoria Holt had a book published every year from 1967 - 1983

Elizabeth Mansfield = 1978-1996

Mary Stewart - most of hers were written before 1967, but several of them fall in your sphere, including one of my favorites Touch Not the Cat in 1976

I've been trying to use books I have, most of which I havn't read. I have alot of books that I got dirt cheap ($1/bag) or close to it (25 or 50 cents a book). I've inventoried everything except a few apple boxes of books in the basement (of which there are about 6) where I got them $1/bag. I did discover one prolific author that wrote alot of books that fall within the years I need (like the decade of the 70s) and that's Louis L'Amour westerns.

I've only read about 3 or 4 of them so far but I've managed to collect about 30 or so. I picked up most for 50 cents each at the library's annual summer sale. The next one I want to read is Crossfire Trail and then I'll reward myself with the Tom Selleck movie of the same name.

I'm debating this one. I actually partially did this last year in a different challenge. Though that one was a count off challenges as in for a year ending in "9" you had to read 9 books for that year, a "6" year required 6 books, etc. But we only did it for one decade and that was brutal! I DID finish it though. LOL

It's good fun - I loved putting my list together and have been able to cross challenge several books. You get quite a while to do it - depending on your age. Go for it!!!!

She also got Dead Until Dark is listed as having come out in 1981. I think she is definetly confused.

Lili, It isn't just about reading 25 books if you're 25. It's about reading a book, published in every year starting from the year you were born until the present. That's part of why it's taking us so long... finding old books from way back when depending on your age.
