Oh Get over it! Fans of the Outlander Series wait 4 and 5 yrs for the next book in that series...so just chill! Either you ARE A FAN of the writer and KNOW it's worth the wait or you are just spoiled and want everything right now! If the latter, just read an old series that is already completed so you can have your immediate gratification!
Theresa
Hey there - I read a lot of books by authors who you have to wait a year, sometimes longer in between the release of the next book in a series. I think that authors want to make sure they publish a good book and not just rush it out the door. Plus I imagine they have personal lives as well and don't just spend all their time writing. I prefer the wait (even though it is torture) and sometimes just wait until the year that the final book will be released to read the series, than an author who pumps out tons of books quickly and most aren't even their writing. I wouldn't stop reading her books, just because she takes her time with her writing, but that is just me. Happy Reading!
Anthoney
A year is a perfectly reasonable time to wait. Try waiting on George R R Martin. George takes longer lunch breaks.
Patricia Evans
She writes several books a year. That way we aren’t waiting several years for a new book in her other series. I personally would rather her spend all her time on the In Death Series… but that’s just my preference. LOL I think it’s amazing that she can turn out as many books as she can in such a short amount of time.
Kathy Steffen
Try to write a novel. That will answer your question. Nora Roberts is quite prolific and writes several a year, and that is a herculean effort. A year is nothing. If this bothers you to wait, don't read it until a trilogy until the final book is done, then start it. I have to admit, I'm antsy too, but if the next one is as good as the first, I'm willing to wait.
Kelley
A year is nothing. Even the big name hugely popular authors are restricted by the publishing house's schedule of book releases. And geez, writing a book is HARD work! I don't write myself but I have TONS of friends who are authors. They do have to sleep and eat, and take care of their families. And yes, even many of the "big" authors can't survive on royalties alone. They have to work for a living too, and writing novels is in addition to that. So, have patience!
Machelle
AMEN Theresa! I had prefer she take her time and make it exciting to read and worthwhile for me to spend my time and money in supporting her! NR typically writes in trilogies and has MANY book series that she is developing. I say great job!
Michala
If you keep you with her Facebook page or check the release schedule on the website, you would see that she has multiple releases during the year. Added to that is her in death series that she writes as J.D. Robb. Yes a favored or new series may have a long release date, but I find the anticipation worth it when I am finally able to read it. My advice is to ask other fans of her books for different book or author recommendations. You may find several new favorites with an extensive back log off books that would make the wait go faster. It's important to remember that your favorite authors are still humans with lives and are not chained to their computers in order to supply you with reading material.
Jen
Susan,
Please remember that writers are Blood and Bone, and NOT a robot to spit out books. Nora is always worth the wait and she is an artist!

I agree with Theresa, waiting a year for a book, not really out of the question, plus she writes under other pen names. stop reading her books if you like or wait till the whole series/trilogy is published, then read it.
Jennifer
Yeah she puts out multiple books a year -including under JD Robb - and it takes time to write a book. Also she's allowed to have a life. This is what happens with series. If you don't like it wait until the series is complete and then read it.
Lark of The Bookwyrm's Hoard
I totally understand your eagerness for the next book, and it's a tribute to her skill as a writer... but I urge you to be patient. Nora Roberts is an unusually fast and prolific writer, so she has sometimes been able to release all three books of a trilogy in around 18 months. That has conditioned some of her readers to expect her to churn out books quickly. But that is NOT the norm for books of this length and calibre (unless a series was already complete or nearly complete when the author signed the contract.) Most authors take at least a year to write the next book in a series like this, and many authors need more time more than that. (Just ask fans of Diana Gabaldon, George R.R. Martin, or Patrick Rothfuss!) While it's true that there are other romance writers who can manage three or four books a year, those books are usually much shorter than the books in Roberts's "One" series, and the authors rarely have to do the amount of worldbuilding required by a series like this. This kind of worldbuilding takes time, to make sure it's consistent and makes internal sense... and that's in addition to the actual writing time required. So please let's give the woman a little breathing space?
Cyn
LOL, but this is normal for most book series so not sure why you're so mad about it.
Nicole
The impatience. Did you know that Stephen Kings Dark Tower series took 30 years to write 8 Books? Yeah, the best things are never rushed.
Donna
Other than it takes time to write, edit and publish a book? Someone mentioned George R R Martin and I'm still waiting for the final novel or two to be published and that series started in 1996. I didn't find the series until a few years ago, so I haven't been waiting that long for him to finish. However, I did read Clan of the Cave Bear in the 80's, soon after Valley of Horses came out. I had to wait until 2011 (that's over 30 years for 6 volumes) for the final novel. So waiting a year just doesn't seem like that big a deal, especially when I can enjoy two JD Robb and Shelter in Place in the meantime!
Evelyn Ryan
If you are that impatient, wait until the series is finished.
Mari
When I know it is a trilogy, and not an indefinite series, of one of my favorite authors, I don't even start the series until just before the third one is published. It saves me the "dying for the next book" problem. And I don't have to familiarize myself with the story world all over again. As much as it drives me crazy to wait until the series is done, it is so much easier for me to deal with.
Someone else mentioned Outlander. I was lucky enough to start the series after in 2014 and was able to read the first 8 books without waiting. So I've had only one period of waiting years for the next book.
I've been lucky enough to discover other series after they were completed.
I have a shelf named "not reading until series is over" - an idea I got from another GR reader, so I can keep track of them.

Seriously?! Do you know just HOW MUCH WORK goes into putting out a single novel?! Especially one in a series where so much has to be planned and organized? WOW. Just wow. Deal with it. Seriously.
Alli
I get that you want to read them one right after another, no wait time in between, but do you understand that how book series work? Most series take about a year between publications of each novel. Between marketing and promoting of the first book, the year long wait between novels is to allow all readers time to buy, read and fall in love with the first book. Not to mention the time it takes to mass produce a book, from writing to editing to printing to binding. They have to get the cover together and the marketing materials. They have to spend time marketing and promoting the book, it has to fit into a production and promotion schedule. Without promotion the book doesn't make money and if the book doesn't make money there's no reason for the publisher to produce it, it becomes a burden and an expense that the publisher can't sustain.
Producing books isn't an instantaneous thing, especially when Nora Roberts is producing several novels each year.
Most 'fans' understand that books take time to write and produce. And most people understand that this is the case with all series, regardless of the author. If you love Nora Roberts and you're so petulant as make threats to quit reading if you don't get what you want when you want it, then perhaps don't start a series until all the novels in the series have been written and published are available to purchase.

Probably something to do with the fact she writes a lot of books, and also writes the In Death series. Either you're a fan, and know there's a wait, or you're not, get over it!
Susan
So thanks for all of your insights. Had I known this was a trilogy I would have taken your suggestions and waited until all three were completed. I would also like to add that it's refreshing to see that this author is so well defended and loved. I hope that it is appreciated. I somehow believe it is. I'm going to try the Death series as a suggestion.
Nicole
LOL. Patrick Rothfuss, anyone?
Julia
I think the average wait in series, regardless of the author, is about 1-2 years.
Cade Ernsberger
She writes four books a year. Two In Death books, one of her trilogy books, and another book, usually an anthology. This is why there is always a year in between her trilogies.
Deb
What everyone has said! Most authors don't publish a complete series ... they're writing the next one as the previous is published. Part of that is contract, and part of that is the reality of writing! And, from what I can see on Amazon, it looks like she may be also writing/releasing additional novels in the same time.
Lyndall Buxton
Be thankful you only have to wait a year, fans of Game of Thrones have been waiting years for George RR Martin to finish the series!
Jan
Ridiculous?? Okay, turn it around and you come up with an idea to write, write the manuscript, edit it, re-write, publish and, by the way, be working on the next book so you can finish it before readers start complaining. A well conceived, well written and edited book takes time. If you want trash, grammatical and spelling errors, superficial character development, and illogical plots, you can find plenty of authors who pump out several books a year. I can read them in two days if I want to waste my money. My list of books read is over 60 pages (so I don't re-read) and in the middle of at least 17 series. It has been several years on three series which will likely never finish as one author died and her co-authors have written a few more/no conclusion, another heartbreaker of a series the author is older/hasn't published in years, the last by Jim Morrison's wife seems to have lost interest. All great reads over ten books in each series, may never, ever be concluded. We take the writers for granted in our desire to devour their next books. Find another series to read in the meantime, or several, there are a lot of really good ones out there. Try David Weber, Sara Maas, Holly Black, Victoria Aveyard, Kim Harrison, Sara Roethle, or John Gwynne - a four-book series each book 600 to 800 pages, depending on if you want light or totally engrossing reading. I discovered them all by accident and so glad I did.
Anna Johnson
It is amazing you think a year is a long wait for a second book. I would say that is considered amazingly quick unless you are reading solely romance novels or James Patterson. Please detail further who you are reading that release second novels within a year or less.
Nada
It normally takes her about 18 months for all 3 books to come out in a series.
J
What an absurd statement.
Dan Beliveau
OMG! Do you know how long it takes to write a book? It has to go through several drafts, then through editing, further revisions, and then get on the publishing schedule. This woman cranks out several titles a year - and in different genres. I think it's rude of you to expect more, faster.
Scarlet Noble
Respectfully- you can fudge off. Why don't you try writing multiple books in a year and see how works out for you? This question is stupid, insensitive, and frankly- it's rude.
Arimathea
There is a very logical reason. It takes time to write a book. Then the book has to be edited, proofread, possibly revised, printed, and released.
An entire year?! A year is not a very long time. Fans of many authors have to wait decades for a series to be completed -- and occasionally the author dies before the story ends. (See: Jordan, Robert, and Masters, John.)
Think about all the Charles Dickens fans in New York who had to wait for each CHAPTER of a book to be printed in the London papers and then sent by ship across the Atlantic.
If you can't take the wait, then don't read the series until it's done.

OMG! People! We do live in fast food times don't we?...We want everything now!! Because everything is about us! Come on!! Really?...
One year is actually a fine timeline for a sequel, I've waited 10 years for Ken Follett's Kingsbridge series! It was worth every bit of it too! A good book doesn't get spit out in a couple months!

A Dance with Dragons , G.W.W Martin. Publication date 12 Jul 2011 and we still whaiting for the next book. No release date yet..
Anne Jones
I think Nora is amazing, she writes an in death as JB Robb, a book in a trilogy , and a stand alone.in one year. All great novels
Monica (is working the heck out of
Well, she's churning out the In Death books every six months (these have gone down in quality in recent years) and probably working on other romantic suspense standalones.
I think she's burned out and ready to retire and dragging her feet.
Who knows.

Yes, there is an answer to having to wait a year for an author to write a book.....it is work to write a book! Many famous authors write just one book in their entire lives. I am amazed by how many books Nora has written and published. Perhaps you should wait for the entire series to come out before beginning it.
Mario G
I started reading A Song of Ice and Fire in 2000, when the first three books had been published. I waited 5 years for A Feast of Crows, 7 years for A Dance with Dragons and right now it’s 8 years and counting to A Winds of Winter. Good things take time.
Michelle
It takes time to write a book. Edit it. Rewrite it. Edit again. Rewrite it again. Submit it. Rewrite based on editors changes. Hammer the deal. Print the copies. Ship them out. And finally, let them free to be read.
Suck it up. Pick up a few other good books in between and learn some patience. The world doesn't move on your timetable.

Lets see you write faster. I will happily wait for a book when they are consistently good. Several Authors I read have a year or even more between books. This gives me the opportunity to read or discover other authors.
Yuri
One year is nothing, it has to be fucking written AND edited, get over yourself.
Cindilouw
Welcome to the world of publishing. This is a common practice, you have to be patient and keep up with it. You can enjoy other books while waiting for the next book.. That is what I do. I don't let it deter me UNLESS the book is of no interest to me. The end...
Nikki
Try being a fan of Isobelle Carmody's young adult and adult series... we're still waiting for the Legendsong series to be completed - book 2 came out in 2002!
CATHERINE
Are you serious, she is in her sixty's and puts at least three full novels and a short story. How many books did you get published this year
Sandra Jackson - Alawine
Really you are complaining about a years wait. Most authors take considerably longer.
Richard Chembars
A year between books isn't that bad.. Go read GRRM's novels. I have a lot of series I have to wait a year between each release on. C'mon man...
