I'm ditto-ing you. Shocking...

I liked the evolution of Cora, and I too ended up googling Louise Brooks to learn more. But unfortunately, it's a sign of how much this one didn't stick with me that I finished it a few days ago, but didn't remember The Chaparone's name is Cora until I read this thread.

7638 I started The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott a few days ago. It's OK, but it REALLY reads like an attempt to explain Little Women - which at first was endearing, and now I'm just rolling my eyes.

7638 Progress report -

Gabe does noticeably better on his meds - he had a stutter which is totally gone when he has medicine. But he doesn't like it.

Kasia gets to have weekly counselling to try give her some strategies for dealing, but the psychologist really thinks that once we are HOME and stable, things will get better.

Jerry, our general contractor is having complications with his injury. He hasn't done much on our house since September. Rusty has come back to work, and has pretty much worked to complete our house. And it's beautiful, wonderful, awesome...but it doesn't have a septic system yet, which is pretty crucial. Still waiting for that. Combo of Jerry being laid up and some ill-timed rain is getting us pushed back with that. We moved a good chunk of stuff into the house today and will continue to move/unpack as next week progresses. It would be much more fun if I could be sleeping there, but we're doing our best here.

So, that's the scoop. Still waiting. Still sleeping in my in-law's basement. Prayers and thoughts still requested. (however, we are minor. There are way bigger problems out there than mine)

7638 Had 30 pages left in Doc. Realized I brought it back to the library today instead of the book I was done with. :(. Crap!!!

7638 It's been a trying week. If you do prayers, I could use some.

Our contractor ended up in surgery today after tearing his bicep from the bone. Our finish carpenter got blood poisoning and is laid up. I'm concerned about both of them as people - Jerry isn't young, healing will be hard, especially for a guy so used to working hard. Rusty, our carpenter is a really nice, talented guy, and blood poisoning is a big deal.

The house has been at a stand-still since last week Friday due to the illnesses and injuries.

Kasia missed school today due to an acute anxiety attack. Gabe was formally diagnosed with ADHD Monday. We have a med consult for him Friday, which I will then piggyback Kasia onto because 7 weeks into school and worse instead of better is bad. I have them both scheduled with the psychologist.

And I really, really feel like I'm failing here. I hope I'm doing right by both of them, but I hate that I'm not enough.

I'm about 150 pages in - I don't love it like I did Harry Potter, but my feeling is that this is what Dickens would sound like now. Her ability to get inside people's heads and describe in detail the personalities and thought processes of so many different types of people feels like Dickens. There's not a great deal of plot here, but the detailed study of characters is pretty amazing.

7638 @ Monica - TOTALLY. I've been the same way for years. But this one was advertised in the Sunday circular for Target, and my husband (bright man that he is) said, "Hey, this looks like something you'd like. You should get it." Who am I to turn that down?

Off to read some more!

Did you buy it from Target because of the banner that has been at the top of GR for weeks?"

There isn't a bookstore in town, I hate WalMart and it was 10:00 in the evening when I had the time to go grab it. :) However, the ads HAVE reminded me about the day. I was happy to see there was still a book left for me last night.

7638 I am a Harry potter freak, so I'm really excited to have this one. Only 25 pages in so it's still getting set up.

7638 Update on my world...

Kasia's adjustment continues to be hard. We've had 4 days of 24 so far without tears. None in a row. She's having some anxiety issues that don't truly appear to be about school. Her teacher is an old family friend, and she was shocked to hear what kinds of difficulties we have each morning, as evidently in school she's shining both socially and academically. I'm hoping and praying it's a chaos thing, and that when we move (in 18 days!) and settle in that things will be better.

Gabe loves school. He loves football. He wants help in "stopping daydreaming". I do not like his teacher. I have an appointment with a child psychologist for Monday to address the AD(H)D stuff again. He really doesn't have the H. Just massive issues focusing when he's not interested/in a group setting. He'd be AMAZING as a home-schooled kid. My mother-in-law works with him after school and gets fabulous results with him. But the structure of school is a really, really, REALLY hard place for him to excel.

The house is beautiful, gorgeous and I'm over budget. I'm scared and excited and ready to move NOW. October 15 is when we've got the moving trucks - October 16 is the day the counters go in. So...still pretty much on target for move in.

7638 I'm plodding away through Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter...it's OK, but not riveting.

@LynnB - LOVE both those books. Enjoy!

7638 Barb, your post made me laugh. I'm a farmer's daughter and I got married during Spring's work because it was more convenient for my college friends. :P My dad was really impressed.

I'll be interested to see what you think - I too read those books in that order, and was disappointed in March.

I'm not sure. I have Dreamers of the Day by Mary Doria Russell and A Thread of Grace by Mary Doria Russell

Right now I'm reading Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson .

7638 Well, I finished A Northern Light. :). I read while it rained and I've spent the afternoon on my friend's couch while our children play and she runs errands with her husband. I enjoyed the book, but it wasn't an it book for me. I could tell as I read it that it won't stick with me for long. I much preferred Donnelly's Tea Rose.

7638 I've finished Children of God - which was also amazing. I'm telling everyone I know who reads about these books, and I'm looking forward to the additional books I bought by Mary Doria Russell recently.

I finished Blink which was my book for my work assignment. Not dreadful, but largely anecdotal, he seems to have found various stories that fit his theory...but I'm not really convinced of any great revelations after reading it.

I picked up A Northern Light last night and am a little into that one now. It's a rainy dreary day today, so I'm planning on doing lots of reading!
