7638 I started Crazy Rich Asians last night and dove in, I'm at 14% done or so, and I'm enjoying it. Total mind candy, with insanely rich people doing exactly what we fantasize insanely rich people do. Not sure how much of this is accurate - seems incredibly blown out of proportion (12 dresses/season at $200,000 each?!? Really????)

7638 Thanks Tasha! It's a VERY quick read, short for King.

7638 I'm about to start Crazy Rich Asians tonight. :)

7638 Finished it today - really did enjoy it. There's a burning question for any others who have finished it that Adonica and I missed...wondering if anyone can help us.

7638 Happy 4th!

I'm decompressing today, I had a busy, stressful weekend at my dad's farm auction. He retired with the end of the 2011 growing season, and on Monday he had the auction to sell off the farm equipment. It was really, really hard as he's a 5th generation farmer, and the end of the line - my sister and I didn't marry farmers.

We did get to do a family photo shoot at the farm on Sunday though, so we got some amazing pictures on equipment, with the implements in the background, etc. I'm trying to figure out how many hundreds of pictures I'm going to order...

I too finished Gone Girl in the past week and was sucked in - I don't know that "enjoyed" is the right word though. The book was a total mindf#ck, imo. I wonder what Gillian Flynn is really like, because her books are awfully dark and twisty.

I'm going to read Crazy Rich Asians soon too - after Joyland...so maybe tomorrow? :) My husband's cousin (who I'm really close to) married a man who was born in Taiwan and comes from a very traditional Chinese family, so she sent this one to me. I"m excited to start it.

Joyland is now a Bee Book! :) I just was posting in the thread - Alison and Tricia, you'll have to join in!

7638 I'm about half through - Lisa, buy it! It's actually really cheap, I got mine for under $7, I think King was throwing this publisher a bone with Joyland - Hard Case Crime repackages older novels and publishes by new authors and sells the books really reasonably. No hardcovers, but the book has a good font and spacing. I cannot believe how pathetic I've gotten with small, tight print.

And I'm halfway through - I really am enjoying it. Adonica and I ended up having a geekfest texting about the book last night - basically my only gripe so far has been that the timeline seems off. There's too much modern in a novel set in 73. WDW was brand new, so I don't know quite how the guy could have spent several years working for Disney (unless it was at Disneyland, which is older...) and references to closed circuit tv and cameras in stores...but then Adonica looked it up and it was correct, 73 is when they were introduced.

I find myself falling into the story, and being amazed at how King can bounce around in his narrative and keep it cohesive. It's like listening to someone tell a story - one thing leads to another, the narrator is a guy pushing 60 remembering that summer, so he'll bounce back and forth with story lines and character development that are out of sequence, but still work.

7638 Welcome to Jeff, Sharon and Shelby!!! So glad to see another guy join us. :) Have fun posting, this is the best place on Goodreads.

I think you may all end up surprised at what books you end up trying and loving through this crew. I know I've read out of my comfort zone A LOT here and very rarely am I disappointed.

7638 Lisa, it's not available via e-book at all, so you will have to do it old school.

7638 Shocking that we doubled up on this one. :)

7638 Currently reading Gone Girl, it's entertaining. Not utterly engrossed though. I'm going to start Crazy Rich Asians next.

7638 I felt that way about The Help by Kathryn Stockett - soooo much buzz, and I just didn't feel it lived up.

7638 I've got a friend coming over - the other problem is that the whole back yard is just an un-even mess. Mike complains of a bruised butt after he mows.

I've got enough mustard growing right now to keep French's stocked for awhile. :P But I'd rather have mustard than thistles, so just details, right?

I will be shocked if we aren't forced to start over. I'm just not sure what the best approach for doing even that is!
7638 I finished this one up tonight - I still don't love non-fiction. I keep trying though!

This was readable, and did get the task of compiling this crazy group of words quotes and examples expressed in its totally, difficult, mind-blowing way. I did feel at times like I was reading a *really* long paper written by one of my comp students. I was a little surprised at the lack of references cited.

I did also feel like I was reading an episode of Grey's Anatomy at times. :) I had Dr. Minor diagnosed way before the physicians of his time!

7638 I finished Dancing Winds Dancing Winds by James C. McCrae tonight and gave it 5 stars.

It's currently at Amazon for $3.99 on Kindle and $3.79 on Nook. Printed books are also available.

I was handed this book by a friend - her dad wrote it. He's a federal judge in Canada and apparently an author as well. This was originally published in 2006.

This book was great - simply written, almost YA in some ways. The story begins with the Night of Broken Glass and 16 year old protagonists Sender and Katrin. Sender is Jewish, Katrin is the daughter of an SS officer.

Some atrocities occur - as one will expect with a novel set in Nazi Germany with any Jewish protagonists. However, it is a book full of hope and love. The writing reminds me a lot of Stuart Woods, but rather than little sprinkles of sexual innuendo, this book had little bits of God - the characters, whether Jewish or Christian - make open references to God, their thankfulness, their anger, etc.

I pretty much read this in one sitting. I read the first few pages a few days ago before bed...the rest I plowed through today. I think everyone will enjoy this one.
