Well, I have succumbed to endless winter and have been in bed for two days and went to the doctor today and got some antibiotics for strep. I'm so exhausted I've hardly even read. Depressing! I really want to get done with The Passage and move on. Long book...I think it could have been editied some.
Does anyone have experience with/opinions on the 39 Clues series by David Baldacci? I can get the series from the kids' bookorders and am tempted - but worry this may be me projecting my interests again.

Alison, that's so sweet...I may take you up on it!

I started this one two days ago and have been really enjoying the ride. I'm not finding it slow, but just got through a couple much denser reads, so this feels like a breeze.

I agree with you Petra - she is not dreadfully successful in mixing humanity with history. However, looking at it, I think the characters help me to understand and relate to the story more. If she had characters who were not affluent, it would be much harder to identify with how much they lose. I thought the illustration of the refugee camps was well done in that I could see them, and feel how real the suffering was.
The characters never become much more than 2 dimentional - they are very wooden, as you say. But I think some of my inability to relate really did come from a disconnect of culture and time. Baby was named - Kainene calls her by her name, but Baby has become more of her nickname, I didn't feel the irritation at that. I find the whole thing sad - what a waste!
I think that it's good that the story was written. I wish it was better, but it was still worth the read.

Kristina - I've put
A Monster Calls on my tbr, I'm looking forward to it!

I finished today and thought it was awful. Humbert is a vile murdering rapist, there is virtually no cohesive narrative, I felt no truths whatsoever in the telling. It was pretentious and awful.

I finished today and ended up giving it 4 stars - I felt the lat 1/4 of the book really didn't hold together. The descriptions of the refugee camps were so sad, and I am glad that I read the book. It is too easy to ignore the suffering that goes on in places we don't know.

It was awesome!!!!! I went to a panel discussion and then the reading. Loved listening to her. I got 3 books signed. Wild she writes "happy trails", torch she writes "keep the faith" and Tbt she writes, "take the balloon". Love.

Petra, it explains why she's unnamed. And Richard is a total loser. That doesn't change.

I saw Cheryl strayed tonight!!! Got all my books signed.

Yeah, I'd require an invite. Who cares that you're the only one I know!

Elizabeth NC - I'll send you my snow! We have about 4 feet and there are 8' drifts and higher along the tree lines. It's insane because by the end of February we had less than a foot! March has been a total lion.

I think she's referring to Tanya. Liz and I should be good for sangria!

SNOW DAY!!!!! Kids are off, my office is closed - woohoo! I'm in my pajamas with coffee and books, hunkered down in my library. If my husband would just come home it would be perfect.
Liz, I know I'm planning a trip down there over President's Day weekend 2014, we'll have to get together!

I'm really enjoying the book as well - the dynamics of the families, friends and servants are very interesting. The book is very well written. Tricia - I think I'm going to agree with you on this one! :)

I read your review when I chose it. I think I ended up giving it 3 stars. But it was a pretty "meh" read for me.

Pick me! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for work and school to get called off. School is already 2 hours late...4-8", 30 mph winds. What, no one wants to stay here?

I couldn't do the prenatal vites, I threw them up.2 flint stones with iron each day worked for me. Good luck. I hated pregnant sick. (I refuse to call it morning sickness. I was sick all day)

Well, it's below zero and the wind is starting to blow. Liz, I won't hate you, but your picture with your cute little hat belies that desert dweller!
I will have to find my summer clothes next month and figure out what else I'll want to take to Florida in May. I'm sure that'll be the first chance I'll have to wear anything that doesn't involve layers and down lining. :(

I read this one for my 12 Bee Books, and while I really did enjoy it, I have no desire to move on with the series. I have never read a book that actually portrays the raiding Indian parties, the massacres, etc. I thought Turner did a great job showing both sides of the fights without making one or the other really to blame.
I was surprised by all the violence in the early part of the book. I think when I opened it I expected closer to Little House on the Prairie.
